This is a theme that I ADORE this story for ā people helping others feel more comfortable being themselves.
But thatās not the easiest thing to do. Yeo Joon felt safer keeping people at a distance, being liked superficially for his money, his looks, and ābrightā, easygoing personality. But safety is not happiness. Wearing a mask takes a toll on the spirit because what these people are āvaluingā him for is not him, but rather what he gives them. And ultimately he just wants to be loved and valued (I mean, donāt we all?).
The crux of the matter is, though, that he doesnāt feel that being himself is good enough to be loved, which is a product of his experiences with his very dysfunctional family. Hence, the mask.
And itās not until he meets a blunt (or rather, rude) sunbae who cuts through the bullshit and speaks his mind on what he sees (ācampus walletā comment for starters), and another sunbae who he relates a little too much to (being a doormat for others while desiring love from people that canāt love them back), that Yeo Joon starts to change ā that he rekindles his hope for genuine connection with others.
Itās a really satisfying journey that these three go on. You can really see how positively people can influence each other, how they can inspire courage and provide support, making previously impossible things a possibility.

La Pluie Meta Round-up
Since many of us have decided to stop being normal about this show, I wanted to get a little more organized about tracking the great meta inspired by the episodes every week. Some of yāall are putting in work to write these amazing essays digging into the text and subtext of this show, and I want to make sure Iām not missing any of it, as well as have a central place to track my own. I thought this might also be a useful resource to others, especially anyone coming to the show late (please join us, this is the perfect moment to get into La Pluie).Ā
So without further ado, a round up of my favorite essays and posts to come out of the fandom on this excellent show. I will plan to update this each Saturday with the previous weekās meta as we go through the final four episodes. I tried my best to find everything but y'all know how faulty tumblrās search and tag functions are, so if you think I missed something important, let me know!

You know, as much as 'because I like you, asshole' was devastating, to me, the most painful thing Tien said that episode was 'i thought you felt the same way'.
Because here is a boy who's never been in love. Who needed help figuring out how he felt and what these flutters in his chest meant. A boy who, I'm convinced, has never thought someone would ever like him. Because he's brash and loud and rude and hides behind walls (while taking care of everyone else). Who, in a universe where some people have special, perfect loved ones just for them, would fall for someone like him?
Until Lomfon. Until he met this guy who he could be all those things with and slowly break those walls down. Show the side of him that wasn't full of barbed wire words and bluster. And he actually thought Lomfon felt the same way. Against all odds, Tien felt like his feelings were returned.
Not because of a soulmate - because of course someone like him doesn't have a soulmate - but because Lomfon liked him. Lomfon looked at him and saw something worth cherishing.
Except, no. He had to find out the person he likes doesn't like him back, has a soulmate, that soulmate is his brother, and had to watch Lomfon kiss said brother right in front of him, all at once.
The boy who fell in love for the first time immediately had to learn what heartbreak was like too.
~ 'I thought you felt the same way.' ~
