rant about Thirteen(2003) and SLC Punk!(1999)
ok so hear me out, but i see edits and posts with images like these floating around a lot:

(SPOILERS INCOMING)
i get that these movies are nostalgic for a lot of people, and widely beloved in specific circles, but beneath all the eyeliner and cool y2k hairstyles, do yk what they feel like to me?
✨propaganda✨
i'm sorry, but it needs to be said.
in thirteen, the whole message is this scared-straight, don't-do-drugs-or-else type thing, but people just see the aesthetics of the movie and romanticize the fuck out of it anyway. the message feels forced, and the delivery is so ham-fisted and woefully out of touch, like i'm watching a feature-length PSA. and that ending??? painful. not in an emotionally satisfying or cathartic way either, but in a forced, tasteless, way. tracy's character lacks depth, her emotions are treated with all the gravity of a toddler flinging its toys at the wall. so, when she has her "rock bottom" moment, it doesn't feel earned, it feels cheap, like you're being spoon-fed a moral message about listening to your mother and "just saying no"; sound advice, but unrealistic, and delivered in a way that likely isn't going to reach anyone.
in slc punk!, the main character is constantly whining about posers, nevermind the fact that he's a trustpunk with a rich lawyer for a dad, who payrolls his life while he sleeps on mattress on the floor of a punk house. his worldview boils down to "anarchism is when no-rules-only-chaos-set-shit-on-fire" (barely paraphrasing). his whole character is a massive strawman. he's a middle-aged, conservative movie executive's idea of an "anarchist". he's so insufferable that if he wasn't played by matthew lillard he would have zero (0) redeeming qualities.
the kicker? at the end of the movie, he goes totally straight, shaves off his spiky blue hair, dons a suit and tie, and marches dutifully off to harvard to become a lawyer, just like his old man, saying "there's no future in anarchy; i mean let's face it." we're left with the message that subculture is just an immature phase, that sooner or later you've just gotta lay aside your self expression and your leftist ideals, swallow your pride, and present your mouth for fucking at the great corporate glory hole. how heartwarming.
both these movies leave me with a weird, sick feeling in my stomach. they're like wolves in sheep's clothing, wearing a performative veneer of alternative aesthetics, while subtly pushing a mainstream, conservative agenda.
i feel like a dog that's been fed a pill wrapped in cheese.

"The moment Palestinian journalists and photographers burned as a result of a direct Zionist bombing targeting their tent inside Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip.

The bombing was deliberate, extending to those who conveyed the truth through their lenses and cameras, turning their tent into fire, smoke, and screams.
They were targeted in the heart of the only remaining humanitarian space, within the premises of a hospital that was supposed to be safe.
At that moment, not only were their tools burned, but also the truth they tried to deliver to the world.
A tragic scene added to the series of crimes committed by the occupation against civilians, confirming that the free voice is one of the targets of this aggression."

Because we have to talk in code about this on tiktok, I'm here to help spread some helpful tips to all my American anti-fascists out here who may need it. If you see police car that looks like this, (predominant blue stripe),

This is an ICE car. They are out and about right now hunting down immigrants, legal and illegal.
If you see them- or really, any police car- lurking, scream at the top of your lungs.
"La Migra"
Help save a family.

now seems like a good time to remind my fellow alt kids out there that you do NOT wear your political patches on your back.
wear them on the front. that way if someone disagrees and decides to get violent about it, they’re less likely to sneak up on you and catch you off-guard. stay safe.

You Americans are aware that they can’t arrest ALL of you…right?
There’s no better time to protest, this is end-stage capitalism and it’s only going to end in one way
The revolution needs to be NOW or Trump is going to recreate WW2
It’s time to flip over the monopoly board
The power lies in the masses, and as much as I hate the lack of gun control in the States you guys have a right to bear arms, use it

It’s uncanny how similar Trump is acting like Hitler. People are now doing the Nazi salute. They’re drawing the symbol. The KKK was seen in Kentucky asking people to join them. ICE has been ripping families apart. Companies have pulled back Diversity Initiatives. We’re no longer part of WHO and there won’t be any communication from the CDC at least until February 1st. We’re being censored and the news can’t be trusted. Thousands of Americans didn’t know there were protests against Trump yesterday outside the U.S. Quotes from The Handmaid’s Tale and Anne Frank have been compared to what’s going on right now.
According to The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Studies and Prevention the U.S. has officially been given a red flag alert for Genocide.
I’m exhausted but I will never stop being angry.

could not agree more, so crazy that the band that initially taught me “western propaganda bad, capitalism bad, commercialism bad” and got me into my political values at a pretty young age - turned around and complied to said western propaganda and capitalism.
everytime i listen to radiohead all i can think about is that jonny greenwood and thom yorke r zionists. like craazzzyy zionists. like thom yorke walked off stage cuz someone said free palestine or something like that at one of his shows. Oooghhh U Ugly as fuck thom. Jonny u ugly as hell too. 💔
my heart breaks theyre my favorite band ever but they just Haaad to turn around and Be Like That.
