Members of MGMT were just college kids when they wrote some of the songs that shot them to fame. Their next album had a very different sound, and they continue that evolution with their latest record.

Is The Band Saying That All Our Hard Work, Pain, And Sacrifice Is Just For The Benefit Of Higher Ups?
Or Did They Just Want To Make A Video For The Casually/Socially/Chronically Inebriated?
We think the answer to both questions are “yes”.

MGMT ACIDS AND WINGS - a Choppy English Translation
MGMT ACIDS AND WINGS
The New York duo, demanding and used the charts, released a third album dense and psyche. Cosmic encounter with two geeks with long hair and the head.
It's a coffee shop as he grows by twenty capital, a place soaked pop effects to mask a cruel lack of soul. Above the heads of the two MGMT is on the wall a good photo of the Rolling Stones, Exile on Main Street period, taken during their French retirement.Keith Richards beautifully slumped in a living trapping his Fender guitar in his arms, one or two groupies at hand, his friend Gram Parsons close. All the existential problem of Andrew and Ben MGMT is summarized here, in this complicated arrangement between contemporary prefabricated and authentic pose.
Young and pretty icons, adored by a public fed hipster cup-cake blueberry, both MGMT speak softly, softly, with this specific politeness Williamsburg (Brooklyn, NY), where they still reside. In their eyes, something a teenager who was not fanned by the global success since their debut. In 2008, the princely tubes Kids and Electric Feel make them known around the world, first on campus and in TV spots to sell smart phones, and heating facilities to the most unlikely political rallies (they sued the UMP).
MGMT would embody yet the opposite of this commercial Barnum: spearheading a generation raised with the sharpest blogs, they are primarily obsessive aesthetes, eager rarities. Talk half an hour with a delicious Andrew and Ben shady, it is the certainty to leave fed names totally obscure groups ("now, we hear all the time Woo, an English instrumental group of the 1980s, you do not know? "), lists of books of poetry necessarily exhausted (" Philip Lamantia and David Ohle we have recently upset "), of unknown synthesizers and good anecdotes incurable geeks, capable of the worst. The last? "After reviewing Escape From New York John Carpenter [1981], we were so deluded that we rushed into the cellar which serves as a studio 1am ourselves to replay the entire soundtrack. And listen to all the next day! Then we would just have to download the original version ... "
Something of a soundtrack futuristic movie is also reflected in their new album, simply titled MGMT. This is their third, and one of the few records in recent years have gone beyond the expiry date of threatening two days after which now download any song pop Gave us. A complex album to dispel misunderstandings and say loud and clear that it is still possible to have a tortured soul when it has curly brown hair. It was paid: Congratulations found himself second best selling in the United States and very well placed elsewhere.
RELEASED AN ACID BROTH
Ben: jacket patchwork wool LIKE BOYS. T-shirt in cotton WORLAND URBAN OUTFITTERS. LEVI'S jeans. Boots SAINT LAURENT by HEDI SLIMANE. Andrew:poplin cotton LIKE BOYS. Jean ZADIG & VOLTAIRE. Personal shoes.
MGMT is well with Daft Punk, Vampire Weekend and Animal Collective, one of the few groups in the world to have that luxury: sell music research in a global marketplace. The salutary evidence that the music industry is now the unpredictable territory, dominated by public demand irreducibility. As such, MGMT third chapter is a great pop record, within the meaning of the term in 2013, that is to say, one who dares drive a lot.
Hypnotic, compact, masking his true potential tubesque under wills otherwise above: advance music. "We feel much more comfortable with ourselves and suddenly much more comfortable with our music. For the second album, the situation was more difficult. We came back after the huge success of the first. And we struggled to impose our label a disk that was largely based on a twelve-minute piece into several chapters, and with a sound produced by one of our heroes, the English Sonic Boom [temperamental leader of Spacemen 3, the influence major American rock group of the last decade, ed]. This second disc also has been successful, we did not have any pressure when writing. "
What's it like, specifically, the disk group that has nothing to prove to anyone, except to himself? A cosmic, but not monochrome monolith. A psychedelic pop record that, at first listen, seems leap of acid cauldron in which drowned a few senior members of Pink Floyd good time. "The things we have come so instinctive or by accident. We were playing in the studio, just for fun, by launching into improvisations and gradually all this became the foundation of the album, a very organic way. "The key was to play, play music and open the two possibilities. "For this album, the process itself has imposed a tone of forms of writing ... Suddenly the machines are operated and after a while, the music came to an area where it seemed to invent herself. "A totally new process for MGMT. "We were more structured before, but now we are freer. We came back to basics to play, play all day every two to see what would emerge. "
However, the album is not a haphazard collection of pieces out of the head of two néohippies fortunate enough to spend hours in the studio to turn loops. "Four hours of recording are sometimes become six minutes. A section was cut by one, a section over there. It consisted of the patchwork, trying things out, see where they lead us. We were very respectful of those moments when a song emerged. "
The intelligence of Andrew and Ben extent accuracy, brevity - and always perfect length of their songs that never linger too, invariably end to peak. Some songs you gnaw the heart, you twist the head, leaving no more. "We tried to do something sensual.Something to Sade. We listen more Sade. Sade, it's cool, it's like swimming in an ocean of mascarpone. "
REACHING FOR ALBION
Andrew: mohair sweater DRIES VAN NOTEN. Ben suede jacket SAINT LAURENT by HEDI SLIMANE. Sailor cotton sweater LANVIN.
Disk, rather short and punchy, ends An Orphan of Fortune piece so moving it seems that everything has been done to succeed. "Our album is not conceptual, but it has an undeniable narrative scope. It is important for us to work openings and closures hard to propose a framework, to be more clear in the progression of the music. "This also means that MGMT continues to think hard as sets and not just pieces to download. "We build albums, they explain. We now know we can do it and be more daring, but we know better take a hand to those who are listening. "
A big word comes to mind: psychedelia. After all, Andrew's father, Bruce VanWyngarden alternative journalist, has written a study of the major figures of the cons-culture of the late 1960s, starting with Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey early experimenters LSD .. . The first listening to their new album took place in rooms with private cinema, to accompany their music, forty minutes visual torn between the old blotting and computer generated image circa 1992: a moderately good idea that tended to bring the album to a lysergic trip a tad old-fashioned, hackneyed.
We must get rid of these slimy images to understand the psyche as MGMT is much more rough. It refers more to the reading of the kind that gave some English artists of the 1980s, more than required, more concentrated, more dry as the great American brothers 1960s. "We love the whole English psyche revival wave tinged punk. The Soft Boys, Dukes of Stratosphear, Tones on Tail and more Julian Cope: these are the major influences on the disc. To go faster, we are told Pink Floyd, we respond Stranglers. "
Closer to the old Albion, is for Andrew and Ben a way to get away again and again from Brooklyn and his hordes of hipsters, the bagel between the teeth, a tote bag shoulder loaded vinyl and cassettes? Not so sure. They continue to live there, even reclusive, and Ben still plays DJ in bars (oyster?). And nothing is more "hip" New York is claiming that the England of the 1980s, his music, his ways, his composure, his style - including dress.
Among the clothing offered for photo of Obsession, Andrew and Ben session rushed to a polka dot shirt that reminded them Primal Scream, a suede jacket that evoked their Weather Prophets ("you know?"). Very long also been identified both by their scarves and bandanas tied in the hair: a head accessory directly chouré the Jacobites ("you know, is not it?"), The duo neo-Stones Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth which is probably the deepest since the beginning of their influences.
Conclusion: the greatest British band of 2013 is American, he lives in Brooklyn, has a head on his shoulders, long hair and exudes a gentle a tad paranoid. It was the rock stars we deserve.
