I accompanied a group of 7 & 8 year olds to a local common the other day which has massive bunkers a runways for military aircraft—it used to house nuclear weapons but they are long gone and now there are wild birds, and cattle grazing
Tumblr media
It is stunningly beautiful and kinda weird up there
There is a LOT of sky
Tumblr media
To add to the uncanniness we had to make sure the children didn’t wander off and get hurt or lost so there were constant cries of “keep to the path”
Since this was a school trip, not a fairy tale, we were all made it back fine…no one was abducted by the fair folk or anything like that

So innocently I decided I wanted to start my day off with a little Stargate, as one does. I watched an episode of SG1 and then started SGA only to realize I was watching Common Ground. Well, this doesn't promise to be very relaxing.
I think one of the things I like about SGA over SG1 is I feel like it hits harder. I don't know why exactly. SG1 has plenty of torture and has been known to kill off characters. But there is something about SGA that is more intense, less light, less guaranteed to wrap everything up nicely. The thing I'm unsure about is how much of this sense of intensity comes from knowledge accumulated from rewatching--Elizabeth's death, Carson's death, Sheppard's deepening darkness, Rodney's experiences in the Shrine episode. But, I had watched some of SG1 before SGA and I loved SGA immediately unlike SG1. Even the most intense SG1 episodes don't make me cry like some lighter SGA episodes.
Anyway.
Common Ground. I love it because Sheppard doesn't even once lose his faith that his people will come for him. At the same time, he doesn't sit around twiddling his thumbs. I love that he does both, works for his escape and trusts his friends. I love that after talking about giving up his life in Sateda and then being given two examples of his willingness to die for his friends, we see his trust in them.
I love his final command being not to give in. I love Ronon's anger. I love Elizabeth's pain and strength. There is a shot of Elizabeth from the back staring at the closed Stargate and you can just sense her calling Sheppard back, willing it to open, willing information to form so she can send the team to get him back. It's such a powerful image of a woman in her home waiting for her people to get back, not idle but with a visceral aggression.
I love that we finally get to view the Wraith with a little more nuance. I love it every time Todd chuckles. Giving us a Wraith with a sense of humor was pure brilliance because it connects us to him instantly. It humanized him in a refreshing way. But, really, the golden moment was when Todd treated Sheppard like a brother-in-arms and Sheppard did the same. Talk about me cheering!
I love this episode. It hurts but it also makes me smile and it brings in one of my favorite characters: Todd.

Aaryn immediately struck me as approachable and self-reflective. I walked up with a question to what was on his mind.
“I need to find my wife. I haven’t seen her for a week,” he said. “Before she left she told me that if we don’t see each other for three weeks then she thinks we should date other people.”
He sat quietly by himself, his back to a concrete post. A thin crowd mingled past towards the saturday open air market on the next block.
As we talked a man walked up and handed him a pamphlet for the Knights of Columbus—  a “modern knights” doing the will of God kind of thing.
“Everyone needs a little Jesus in their life— or something,” Aaryn said. With his thumb he pointed to an image on the pamphlet depicting a knight in full plate on horseback. “I’ve seen armor like that. I used to joust and do fencing.” I asked him where and he said, “In a castle. In England. I lived there for a while. It was wild.”
I asked him if that is what he was most proud of.  “No,” he said, “I was special ops in the military. I went on diplomatic missions to Yemen. That is what I am most proud of.”
Approaching someone on the street to photograph them is to learn to read body language and a person’s openness.  It is not uncommon that the downtrodden are the most open and trusting. This is what I love about people like Aaryn. All the titles and self-importance has been stripped away and just a human remians. There is a kindness I find there, like in the way that those with the least often give the most.

Let's Talk A Little About Henry And Lestat Pt.2: The Tale Of Two Princes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry Fitzroy is the son of a King, but he was a bastard and so would not be in line for the throne. He was well favored by his father and so he was given the title of Duke of Richmond and Somerset.
Tumblr media
Lestat was technically an aristocrat even though he was the seventh son of a marquis and more than likely wasn't going to inherit anything anyway. But boy still had that dignified air about him.
Tumblr media
Despite age and experience, both of these guys have managed to retain that joie de vivre. I'm guessing that being turned at an age when they were at the peak of youthful exploration helped a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But they do have their serious, sad, lonely moments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND...they are both artists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry is a painter and a story teller. He writes and draws horror graphic novels and has made quite the name for himself among the fans of that genre. Lestat is an actor and a musician.
I can only imagine how they could inspire each other.

🛫 Distance - Chapter 2 🛬
It took a little while, but here's the English version of Distance chapter 2, finally! The third one is already well in progress in German, so I hope it will soon come out in German and then as fast as I can manage in English as well 😅 🤞
Distance - chapter 2
Little preview? Of course! ⬇️
“Well, and then you came to pick me up.” Mokuba paused and cast a cautious sideways glance in his direction. “But ... why did you come to pick me up, exactly? I thought Roland was supposed to do that ...” “Change of plans,” Seto replied matter-of-factly without taking his eyes off the road, knowing full well that he hadn't even begun to answer Mokuba's question.  “So you wanted to say goodbye to Duke after all?” came the prompt counter-question. Shouldn't Mokuba actually know better than to ask him things like that? He didn't answer. Wouldn't have been able to.

However, the journey back to the other side of the Pacific is not just an opportunity for Duke. While he has to confront the demons of the past, Seto has to ask himself whether his own future is really as clearly mapped out as he always assumed.

What will your interaction achieve? For example, are you trying to vent your own frustration, or are you trying to change someone's mind? Both are very valid, but are usually exclusive.
It's good to always have a goal in mind in social interactions, it's an easier way to leave feeling happy. Depending on your goal, you can change your language and attitude to achieve it. If you're trying to change someone's mind, use sympathetic language like 'I understand where you're coming from, I get the concerns about <x>, I just think that the benefits of doing this far outweighs that negative' and find common ground, even if you find their general opinion is completely counter to your own, harmful and entirely incorrect.
You don't have to change people's minds, it's not your responsibility. You are completely entitled to rant at people, or vent to friends, with no regards to language at all, especially if this person is harming you.
But if you want to change someone all the facts and righteousness in the world are worth nothing if the other person isn't willing to hear it. If you treat them like an enemy, they'll defend from anything you have to say and you will both only be frustrated by the end of it.
This is also applicable in heaps of contexts. Friend made terrible cooking? What's your goal? You might not want to eat their bad cooking again, so how about you help them get better at cooking rather than scare them off it? Offer to cook with them next time, talk about what you liked and what could be improved, matching their energy.
Finding a way forward both parties want, that leaves everyone in the conversation happy is how you get what you want out of any social interaction. Most people don't want to hurt each other, so defusal can be really easy. As long as you're both in good faith, and I recommend giving at least one response in assumption of good faith, then exit the interaction if it's not.
