there's a p common attitude in fandom spaces (fandom in general, not a specific one) that's like "why care about canon, or the characters being ooc? we're here to play with the dolls any way we like" and as much as i obviously am a person who thinks about canon a lot in theory i'm into that. in practice though when popular fanon takes things in a wildly different direction from canon so often it's in the service of taking something that was originally canonically weird and interesting and making it blander. it's flattening a complex character into a broad archetype i've seen a million times before, it's taking two characters with a complicated canonical relationship and writing them in a way where you could find-and-replace the names with any other popular migratory slash fandom pairing and the fic would make as much if not more sense. if you're going to break away from canon at least do something interesting? don't make it less weird? i feel like i'm watching someone take a really beautiful expensive cut of wagyu steak and grind it into hamburger to cook it well done and cover it in ketchup

the problem of fandom reducing characters who are women and/or people of colour to sexist/racist stereotypes is definitely aggravated by the fact that a lot of fans simply do not pay very much attention to these characters in the first place then subconsciously paper over the gaps in their perception with things they’ve been culturally conditioned to believe are true about people in the same category as said character

Dear video essay creators. A video analysis is when you analyze a piece of media. No no look at me. A summary, no matter how thorough, is not an analysis. An analysis requires you to draw conclusions about the media such as authorial intent, real-world parallels, discussion about themes/worldbuilding/character motivation, and so much more. You have to stop summarizing something and saying that’s analysis. The Gaylors are doing more critical analysis than you. Is that who you want to lose to? The gaylors?

I mean, what can I say about the response to the sexual assault simulator game that recently got taken off of steam. it’s a culmination of everything i have been sounding the alarm on for quite some time. leftists, queer positive progressives, and ao3 slop consumers join hands with porn addicts, men’s rights activists and libertarians in such heated defense of male supremacy that they are being outflanked by a group of terfs, recognized as so universally evil that any kind of feminist demand must be dismissed by association, when it comes to opposing rape culture and hate speech against women. To them, suppressing products that eroticize and commercialize the violation of women is an affront to free speech. it’s an affront to “sex” itself to suppress the sexual subordination of women and the commodification of their bodies. if women are mere property claims of men, then men’s right to free speech is being compromised if they can’t socially terrorize women with sexually violent imagery meant to entrench their status as property, after all. any act of violence or social degradation is permissible against a non-human object, because they can’t feel anything, they aren’t sentient. and the leftist sphere of this cohort believes violence against women is permissible and acceptable if it results in an orgasm, because they too cannot imagine women are human. I am yet again telling everyone to confront the uncomfortable truth that no one can conceive of a world where women are human. Women are faced with a world that sees their subordination as inevitable, so opposing it is seen as a crime against nature. This transcends the “political compass” and the dichotomy between the left and right. They all see patriarchy as essential, natural, inevitable, necessary, and sexually gratifying. The left and right argue about the orientation of women’s oppression, whether we should be public or private property, not whether it should exist at all. 🫵🏿
