I enjoy a joke about fucked up German fairy tales as much as the next nerd, but it's genuinely striking how often the source for the really fucked up stuff turns out to be "yeah, this is only in the Brothers Grimm version and doesn't appear in any extant oral tradition, and we're like 80% sure they added it themselves". To a large extent it's not German fairy tales that are fucked up, it's two specific German dudes.
#it is def the main English translator partly to blame for why we think they took these straight from the mouths of mountain villageresses#she asserted straightforwardly that they did and her version is what most of us know#many of them were from French friends or French employees of their friends; many were from written records#(making it funny-not-funny that they were later propagandized as The Pure Völkisch Character)#& yeah many were embellished by the brothers#but also broadly there just is a lot there to make you grateful for modernity#the reason everyone was remarrying and then starving/neglecting their stepkids is people kept dying and there wasn’t enough food!
