SPREE (2020)—The Medium is the Massacre
by Cinema of Cruelty • A podcast on Anchor and Spotify
On this week’s deep dive, The Cultists present Eugene Kotlyarenko’s dark social media satire, ’Spree’ (2020). Loosely based on the 2014 Isla Vista spree killer, Elliot Rodgers, Spree twists the foundations of its tragic origins into something a little more universally tangible with Joe Keery’s “Kurt”—an Uber-style driver and aspiring internet streamer who will do anything to finally be seen, even if that entails racking up a body count for the views. Curiously opting for incorporating detailed reconstructions of Rodgers’ own real-life videos in the process; stunt casting a slew of known social media faces; compositing an impressive array of archivable camera feeds; and asking David Arquette to drop in “to recreate a cringe compilation of his life”—all in order to present the uneasy relationship between murder, mayhem, and fame—Spree is yet another polarizing film for audiences. One that above all else upholds the old McLuhan doctrine that, for better or worse, “the medium is the message.”
For this one, Benji dove deep into the Marshall McLuhan of it all (from message-bearing-mediums, hot and cold forms of media, the tetrad of media effects, and the new school of the hologram), while London went even deeper into the dark waters of 4chan to recover Elliot Rodgers’ videos, posts, and 140+ page manifesto to contextualize the oddly specific details of his life, death, and delusions that pop up throughout the film.

For all the LOST BOYS (1987) Lovers out there. (A deep dive episode-discussion on the film’s origins, content, and production).<3
(P.s. Billy Hargrove is totally the lost love child of these two wonders of undead humanity. Or, I guess since they are all 1980s contemporaries of each other, they would make a killer three-way scenario. Sunglasses, nail bat-wielding Steve Harrington would also fit in well once they convince him to ditch the polo shirts. Or maybe they don’t. Maybe Steve’s the kind of preppy undead asshole who refuses to stop dressing like he’s headed out for a round of 9 holes at the club. Billy finds this super infuriating HOT, especially since Steve’s preppy Brett Easton Elis vibes prove super useful in luring local Santa Cruz/Santa Carla co-eds to the beach bonfires. (And there’s nothing Billy finds more arousing than watching a deceptively soft-looking Steve flirt with co-eds from across the flames, knowing Steve could turn and pounce on his prey at any minute. Billy never knows in those times what he’s more thirsty for--the blood of the airhead asshole clutching his/her red solo cup and giggling at Steve’s banal jokes, or Steve’s immediate attention.
(Basically there should be more Stranger Things/Lost Boys crossovers out there is what I’m saying.)

THE LOST BOYS (1987)— Straight Until Morning
by Cinema of Cruelty • A podcast on Anchor and Spotify
This week The Cultists Present Joel Schumacher’s ‘The Lost Boys’ (1987). At once a pulpy comedy about teenage boardwalk-dwelling vampires on the California coast and a startlingly deep horror critique of Regan Era conservatism, Schumacher reworks what was initially a kid-flick studio pitch of “Peter Pan with Vampires” into an aged-up love letter to letting go. Join us as we take a guided walking tour through this ageless cult classic about the erotic appeal of the eternal outsider— and the film that forever changed the face of the vampire in cinema.
Topics Include: production history, expanded and deleted scenes from the shooting script; the official film novelization; those glorious homoerotic overtones; what’s up with that sunken hotel, and why the filming location of Santa Cruz, California was really known as the “murder capitol of the world.” Oh, and the sequels. We watched (and read) ALL OF THE SEQUELS.

Harringrove for Australia piece for @ihni 🖤 who requested my “version of if Billy had been in Robin’s place during the captured-by-stereotypical-russians scene.“ Thank you dear my brain went wild a bit on that idea in a good way! :D
In my mind it’s kind of pre-harringrove AU where Billy somehow tag along with Steve & Co. to Russian secret base, after they were uncovered Robin Could escape with Dustin and Erica, and Billy with Steve were caught by Russians. and art then.
