21st Century and the Grim Renaissance

Before I get on with my short point, I'd like to extend my eternal thanks and gratitude to the men and women serving in the Armed Forces. I'd also like to express my condolences to the folks who have lost their lives already in 2016, and of course in years past and years future. I realize that I'm only able to ramble about unimportant statistics because of their sacrifice. If you are reading this you probably have access to social media and thus know all about the celebrity loss in 2016. But something occurred to me this morning upon the news of Alan Rickman's death. I always wanted to be an Actor. --WAIT WHAT? Phil is this some silly post about your dream to be an Actor instead of whatever the heck you are now? No. Not at all. Let me expound. The rate at which we ask ourselves if we're working towards something that matters to us, and the world around us, will probably happen more often in the coming years. To say that I'm from a generation of dreamers would be an understatement. I'm 31 and know that I grew up in three decades of the wildest dream achieving stories and the craziest opportunities known to mankind. I will also say that the rate at which dreams or goals are discovered or explored has been interestingly accelerated by the internet. This marriage, for good or for worse, to the information highway is probably the sole source of anxiety for some. Anxiety not from a lack of understanding, but from a multitude of tremendous stories of success, failure, or progress.  Forcing so many fresh minds to question where they fit in or if they should even start a long journey of dream chasing to begin with... I digress, the bar is raised to follow your dreams, but it's also been widened and now with social media in full swing, there isn't many days that go by without a major loss of a top influencer. (For good or for worse.) Here's the rub: since 1970 U.S. Film Production has increased like so: 1970s - 5900 projects 1980s - 7700 projects 1990s - 11,500 projects 2000-2007 - 24,000 projects BUT PHIL WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ALAN RICKMAN. Alan Rickman was an amazing stage and screen actor. His roles left an impact on me and gave me a reason to be interested in the craft of acting. We are aging as a culturally informed society... and the amount of celebrated lives passing away is going to rapidly become apparent in the coming years and I'm interested to see how we as a society take this loss and grow from it. Will this sense of temporary existence spark a new "grim renaissance" where people not only realize that dreams are as fleeting as their life? Will they realize how much opportunity was and is available by the sheer number of reports of celebrated personalities departing us? Do we still feel like children who will live forever, and keep consuming instead of creating because there is no reason to define existence only "fill" it. Are we numb to loss by being inundated with it? Are we doomed? Well no, mankind has been asking these questions forever, but I feel that we're about to be asking it so much more in the future. And I hope you find your answers. -P

In my 8th grade notebook there are sketches for skateshop logos. Heavily influenced in those days by trips to @faithskate , Sanctuary Skatepark and @spottampa . I never thought I'd actually get to pursue another childhood dream. But there are few things more important to me than Skateboard culture and our local community who deserves more. My only regret is how long it took me to push this forward. But here we are with @dothanfanatix and @theboardandtable now self sustained with its own employees, I steer my path once more to shape the Wiregrass into the idealistic place of my youth. These first customers right here have reminded me of why I do what I do. Dreams are what you make them, mine are currently rad and giant. @radgiantskatesupply #radgiantskatesupply
