I saw and then lost your post quoting the Paul Carroll review. You said it was published in 1963, do you perhaps recall the name of the publication? I thought it might have been the Chicago Review but it doesn't appear so.
the full source is listed as: Carroll, Paul. “In a Garden of Eden.” Rev. of We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson. Binghamton Sunday Press 31 Mar. 1963: 16-B.
i think i found the newspaper here when i searched for it ages ago, but i can’t verify without signing up for a subscription. the section i posted was quoted by darryl hattenhauer in his book shirley jackson’s american gothic (which i adore)

Just had to do this again so I would like to remind everyone of girl code that if you see a girl being cornered by some creepy guy giving pained smiles in a conversation she cannot get out of, go up to her and talk to her. If its dire enough you can act like you're already friends but most of the time you can just go and talk to her, give her any distraction and a reason to walk away or for the man to go away. For men if you see this go up and start a conversation with the man, if you can put yourself between him and the woman he's harassing and give her the chance to leave. Do not watch in silence. Do something about it.
#if you’re white and in a professional role you can deescalate cops like this too— ask them for directions or some mundane bullshit#or by offering to help the person the cop is cornering with a lot of customer service energy#once got a cop to stop harassing a kid in a library by asking if i could help & giving the kid an opportunity to ask where to find a book#so we could walk together to the stacks away from the cop#granted it doesn’t always work but just starting conversations is a powerful deescalation tool#(tho if you do this often enough cops will turn on you lol. still worth doing it until they realize you’re not acting white)#you can also intervene in abuse this way#knock on your neighbor’s door and ask for flour or whatever#let people know someone’s watching & change the tone of the script#<- prev tags#I recently knocked on a housemate’s door while they were very clearly being abused#it didn’t really do much on its own but it did shift my own threshold for involvement#and i was able to insert myself in the situation in a way that allowed my housemate to feel supported#and make decisions that got them like safely extricated (like allowing them to crash in my room rather than somewhere their partner had#access to them)#so basically I think what im saying is that if you’re someone whose default is inaction you can train yourself to intervene this way

anyway you should always remember that all those foreigners you see dying on the news are just as real people as you are who have just as much interiority as you do. there is nothing about you that makes you more important and it is by pure chance that you are not in their position. in fact, this holds for all of history. every person, no matter the horror of the fate that befell them, had just as much interiority as you do. i feel like some people haven't fully internalized this.

#predator killer of killers and crimes of the future (2022)#YES#i have no idea how the plots would mesh but that would be crazy (affectionate/eager/salivating a little)

you can be both employed & way too online. it’s called “posting on the clock,” and actually, it’s praxis.
#me as a leftbook mod making obscene quantities of tea in a commercial kitchen that I didn’t know was radioactive (my boss probably did)#in like 2018#good in principle but being a leftbook mod is always a bad idea

worst fear is that i write something from the heart and it gets mocked as #tumblrprose . second worst fear is big big big big ant colony conspiring to kill me to death
#the first one happened to me once in a workshop#the person who said it was a friend and didn’t even dislike the piece#but it was so demoralizing i set the piece aside and haven’t touched it since

My official position is that Luigi Mangione is innocent because he's not the real killer and whoever the real killer is is also innocent. Two different people who are both innocent.

and you're telling me the popular ship in the fandom is gideon/harrow and not gideon/dulcinea. that's what i'm given to understand. no one else is melting at gideon saying very genuinely "i don't want you to die". no one else is really really smitten with dulcinea and practically swoons when she talks
