I saw and then lost your post quoting the Paul Carroll review. You said it was published in 1963, do you perhaps recall the name of the publication? I thought it might have been the Chicago Review but it doesn't appear so.

i think i found the newspaper here when i searched for it ages ago, but i can’t verify without signing up for a subscription. the section i posted was quoted by darryl hattenhauer in his book shirley jackson’s american gothic (which i adore)

Just had to do this again so I would like to remind everyone of girl code that if you see a girl being cornered by some creepy guy giving pained smiles in a conversation she cannot get out of, go up to her and talk to her. If its dire enough you can act like you're already friends but most of the time you can just go and talk to her, give her any distraction and a reason to walk away or for the man to go away. For men if you see this go up and start a conversation with the man, if you can put yourself between him and the woman he's harassing and give her the chance to leave. Do not watch in silence. Do something about it.

anyway you should always remember that all those foreigners you see dying on the news are just as real people as you are who have just as much interiority as you do. there is nothing about you that makes you more important and it is by pure chance that you are not in their position. in fact, this holds for all of history. every person, no matter the horror of the fate that befell them, had just as much interiority as you do. i feel like some people haven't fully internalized this.

and you're telling me the popular ship in the fandom is gideon/harrow and not gideon/dulcinea. that's what i'm given to understand. no one else is melting at gideon saying very genuinely "i don't want you to die". no one else is really really smitten with dulcinea and practically swoons when she talks
