~Whale Shark~

~Introduction~

The whale shark, also known as Rhincodon Typus, is a slow moving, filter-feeding shark. The largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed length was 18.8m (61.7ft). It is quite clear that the whale shark holds many records for its size in the animal kingdom.

~Where is it found?~

Whale sharks are known to inhabit the open waters of all tropical oceans, only rarely found in water below 21 ‘C (70 ‘F)

~How long do they live? What do they eat?~

A whale sharks’ life span is estimated to be between 80 and 130 years, based on Marine Studies, their growth bands and the growth rates of free-range whale sharks. While whale sharks are very large and have very big mouths, they are only filter-feeders. This means they mostly eat plankton and small fish.

~Behavior towards Divers and Humans~

Despite their size, the whale shark does not pose any danger towards divers or humans in general. Underwater photographers, such as Fiona Ayerst, have photographed whale sharks swimming close to humans and alongside drivers with no danger or threat.

~Human Culture~

In Madagascar, whale sharks are called “Marokintana” in Malagasy. This means ‘Many Stars” after the appearance of the markings on their backs.

In Japan, whale sharks are called “jinbei-zame”. This is also because of the markings on their backs resembling the markings on a jinbei.

~In Conclusion~

Therefore, with all this information, Whale sharks are completely harmless and peaceful sea creatures. Being seen all around the world as beautiful and calm creatures.
