[#FFF 318 Lightning Strikes Twice]

This prompt has been brought to you by someone who wishes to remain anonymous, thank you very much! Lightning strikes twice… sometimes. Others they don’t. Sometimes, something else can strike twice. Or the lighting can strike too far too notice. What’s the weather like for your characters today? For many, what you see in the sky tells a story by itself. So, what’s yours today? I can answer the first part, re: why that's the way it's done! (also: full agree with you on the value of the drydown, and as a side tangent I hate when people treat perfume as if it IS a body mist and do the spray-and-sashay through it - all you're doing is wasting perfectly good fragrance because it's not designed to "cloud" around you the way a mist is).

ANYWAY, applying scent directly to the pulse points effectively makes a very narrow throw around you, where, if you've applied it right, people aren't supposed to be able to smell your perfume from across the room - only when you extend your hand to them (wrists) or go in for closer contact, like a hug (behind the ears). On a day-to-day basis, perfume is generally supposed to be an intimate thing that only the people literally physically close to you can recognize as yours.

When you want to give a wider throw at a special event, that's when you do the back of the calves thing - the idea is that as your skirt moves across your legs, it wafts the air around in an enchanting "come hither" effect that lets the scent delicately trail after you as you move, and then immediately fade out as you move away.

Since you've shared with us the knowledge of your super smelling powers, I have to ask:

Do you have opinions about people who wear multiple scents at once? I know someone who has a similarly sensitive nose and people wearing multiple scents is one of her pet peeves

Oh godddd.

I mean. That doesn’t bother me NEARLY as much as people who like… use loads and loads of perfume or cologne or body spray? Especially in public washrooms or grocery stores

Like

I was taught for cologne and perfume: one spritz on the wrist, rubbed to the other wrist, rubbed behind both ears, then on the back of the calves if wearing an evening dress. I don’t know why that was, but that’s what I’ve always done, and it’s more than enough on most people.

Or spray body mist in the air and walk through it for a nice all-over, if you absolutely must.

Too many people do three to five all-over sprays that just… burn the eyes and stink into everything. A good cologne or perfume has a DRYDOWN, for Christ’s sake- the fade-out is the best damn part!

When you DRENCH yourself, all I can pick up on is sweet ammonia, or acerbic cat piss, or alcohol. None of the finer notes come through when people use that much. I hate it

I have congenital anosmia (no sense of smell since birth) and your tier list of scents is twisting my mind like a dishtowel. you're telling me people have a specific smell when they're aroused?? when they're ill?! when they're sad?!?!

Like I said, it’s super subtle!!! Like…. SUPER faint.

Anxious people are (sometimes! When it’s extreme and they sweat a bit) like. Sharp and spicy-sour. Can you taste things at all? Cause I’d describe it as peppercorns soaked in whisky and wrapped in tinfoil at the back of a fridge.

Crying upset and tears smells sour too, but powdery and bitter and wet. I imagine like eating cotton balls soaked in eyedrops.

Sickness is the worst. Strong infection is like… an old book that’s been left outside and gone moldy, and a ripped-off scab, bad meat and rotten apple. Like the aftertaste of a mouth full of tonic water, spoiled milk, and moldy fruit, right after you bite your lip.
