Reluctant Caretaker

caretaker who is whumpee's rival, who hates them, who has said so many times, point blank. who is whumpee's complete opposite in every way, who has years of bad blood with whumpee, who has argued with them and yelled at them countless times and called them every name in the book -

...taking a bullet for them.

...jumping in to push them out of the way of a speeding car or train.

...holding whumpee's head down during a terrorist attack, especially one where the terrorists have announced that they are looking for whumpee specifically.

...breaking into an enemy base to save whumpee from being tortured and executed, especially if whumpee is convinced no one is coming for them, least of all someone like caretaker.

...throwing the first punch at the guy who just insulted whumpee to their face.

...talking big to draw their enemies' attention away from whumpee and onto themself when they both wind up kidnapped together.

...crossing the unspoken line in the sand to wrap their arms around whumpee, cradling whumpee's face on their shoulder and giving them a much-needed hug after a crushing defeat or a loss of a loved one. they're the only one who knows whumpee inside and out, so they're the only one who knows how badly whumpee is hurting right now.
