Final Process Book Cover
The end of the back cover was cut off because of measurements, and the back text is also off-centred because of the measurements. For the next time I do this I will keep in mind that I may need to adjust the placement of text or not place text near the edge of the book.
I am proud of what I have achieved with my process book and I’m pleased with how well it came out. I’m also glad that I chose to use slightly glossy paper for the inside and a heavier weight for my cover as it will last longer when I look back at it.

Final Printed Spreads
Looking through my printed process book, the paper I used makes the images a lot lighter whereas on normal printer paper it makes the images darker, I will know this for next time.

Perfect Binding My Process Book
This process was really simple and I’m glad I chose this method over any others because it can be a hassle to paginate, but this process’s outcome is cleaner and looks professional which is what I wanted. Having done the introduction for perfect binding this was easy to complete, I did end up forgetting to put scrap paper on the front of my book before glueing so I had to reprint that page but it was an easy fix.

Process Book Spreads (some of my favourites)
1. Contents page
I kept the contents page simple as I just wanted it to focus on what the content is for, I chose the place the word vertically along the inside margin because it was close to the text on the other side of the page, I chose not to put it on the same page because I wanted to stray away from having the same structure throughout my book.
2. Recipe design 4: elements and grid
For this spread I wanted one page to have the elements I used in the design and the other side to have the grids, I originally had the image with no grids on the same page but it was too cramped so I moved it. This made good use of space and balance.
3. Recipe design 4
I preferred having this image on its own page with text on the other page, I’ve seen this done in process books examples before and I loved the minimalism.
4. Title page: Judge A Book By Its Cover
I used this image on every title page and the same text layout, using the same image with every title page creates a system so the viewer recognises it as a new project.
5. Workshop
This is one spread of many that stuck to my original layout of having everything fitting to the grid. The title, the images and the body copy fitted to the grid created a simple system that was easy to carry through my process book.
6. Scans from Judge A Book By Its Cover workshop
With my scans, I wanted to break from the grid as this emphasised what the workshop was for; having fun and exploring new stuff.
7. Marble scans from Judge A Book By Its Cover workshop
The same as above with these scans, but I added the text in the same system to create a mixture of both systems and breaking the grid.
8. Presentation feedback
I chose to break up the word ‘feedback’ as it didn’t look good anywhere on the page and keeping it the same size as other enlarged text it looked awkward or went over the margins, so I decided to centre it and have the body text in-between the title - another example of breaking the grid.
9. Collaborative evaluation
I chose to do a monochrome spread for the collaborative evaluation because I hadn’t used it except on the cover. The evaluation spread being in monochrome underlines its importance. I also used the same placement as the contents page for the title, the words being on opposite sides of the margin.
10. Bibliography
For this spread, I chose to add more than one of the titles to again break the Grif but also because the page was too plain so I added some dynamic to the page by rotating and sizing the title down.

Final Tutorial
I printed out my whole process book before the tutorial, one - so I could see how the printing turned out and two - any changes that I need a second opinion on.
I went through and highlighted all the text that had one or two words hanging so that I knew to change them. I also noticed with it being pointed out that I could move some separate paragraphs together if they were short enough.
The first thing I noticed after printing was that a lot of the images are darker once printed than digitally, so I’m going to go through my test print and lighten the photos that need to be lightened.

Final Prototype
After the feedback, we received we wanted to make any final changes and fixes, but also add more to make the app feel finished. We added images to the home page and profile page to show what it would actually look like if it was someone's account. We added a couple more pages too that were missing, and we made a couple changes to some of the designs to make the pages feel more coherent with each other but still so you could see who designed what.

Final Changes to my Book Cover
I have booked another session to perfect bind my book cover, so what’s left to do is give myself time to test print and make the very final changes.
I’ve added colour to who the quotes were by, I chose a dark red which I found on Coolers.co. Using this colour emphasises the genre of the book and adds the right amount of colour to the cover. I have also made the synopsis and the quotes smaller in text size as when having the book cover in my hands the text, especially the synopsis looked way too large. By minimising the text it had given me more spacing on either side so it doesn’t look as though it is falling off the edge. I decided to make the synopsis aligned to the centre, as looking back at a few of the books I have most of them if not all of them are aligned to the centre.
I feel as though with the small changes I have made the cover is complete and at its most successful outcome which I am very happy with.

Binding Machine
I really like the way this came out for my book cover, I won’t be using the machine when I’m doing my process book, I will book open access to perfect bind it in the workshop as that method will last longer and is cleaner. I also really liked the paper I used for the cover as it is off-white and has some texture to it, I got the paper from uni print. For my process book cover, I want to use a thicker paper with a little texture, I have ordered some paper from G.F. Smith.
The spine of my cover isn’t centred, it may be because of too much paper inside but I think overall it came out well. I think I will do it again and make a couple changes to my design as I rushed to print out a test print so I didn’t get a chance to change a couple things that I’ve noticed I dislike.
For the text on the back, I want to make it smaller, especially the synopsis as I don’t like how close to the edge it is, but I may just try putting the synopsis over five lines instead of three.
Also, another change would be to add a little colour to the quotes, either to emphasise what’s already in italics or the actual quote.

Development from tutorial
With the synopsis, I stretched it out so that the reality changes fit into the last line. I moved ‘Guardian’ onto the same line as ‘beautiful’ and I agree that it looks a lot better.
Lastly, I changed the typeface of both the title and author to Futura PT as well as I stopped liking the serif font April Display. I feel as though my design is more successful with the san serif font than the serif.

I want to use this method of binding for my process book as I feel as though it will give it a professional and clean look.
I really enjoyed this workshop and getting to learn how perfect binding works. It would be pretty simple to do on my own in the future. For now, I want to stick to doing it in the studio.
Now I want to choose the type of paper I want to use for the cover, considering weight, texture and colour. I think I want to keep the paper white or off-white, I would like to have a slight texture to the paper which isn’t smooth, and for the weight.

Our group feedback to group 1 on the left and their feedback to us on the right.
This was really helpful as it can guide us when making changes to our app. Personally, I liked the whole idea of doing a brief for a group and presenting the solved problem back to them as it’s really collaborative and a chance to confidently give criticism.
