“The captain of a controversial ship that saved migrants in the Mediterranean Sea has refused to accept a medal for her work.

Pia Klemp, who is German, gained attention for rescuing thousands of stranded migrants with her crew as part of the nongovernmental organization Sea Watch International. For her efforts, she reportedly faces up to 20 years in prison in Italy, where the hard-line anti-immigrant government accused her of assisting illegal immigration.

In a Facebook message published Tuesday night, Klemp announced that she was rejecting the Grand Vermeil Medal, which the city of Paris awards for bravery. She told Mayor Anne Hidalgo that the city was brimming with hypocrisy.

“Your police [steal] blankets from people that you force to live on the streets, while you raid protests and criminalize people that are standing up for rights of migrants and asylum seekers. … You want to give me a medal for actions that you fight in your own ramparts,” Klemp wrote in the scathing post.

“It is time we call out hypocrite honorings and fill the void with social justice,” she said.

She went on to say that people don’t need medals. “We do not need authorities deciding about who is a ‘hero’ and who is ‘illegal,’ ” she said. “In fact they are in no position to make this call, because we are all equal.”

#5Years: August 9 will always be bittersweet for me. Mike Brown should be here today, plain and simple. He deserved a full and joyful life. In the wake of his murder, so many of us have been reborn though. Nothing will ever make his loss worth it, but I am forever grateful to the movement born out of it. also actually to make another point: get a real life outside of this website. the way this website encourages you to constantly seek out problems with everything and to be in a constant state of wearing yourself down trying to appear as a perfect progressive activist all the time so people don’t “cancel” you isn’t healthy. a lot of the discourse people get into on this website does not exist in the real world. your friends and family are not going to “cancel” you if you don’t parrot back everyone else’s opinions perfectly. you are not obligated to put every single thing you enjoy under a microscope. 

this website really encourages black and white thinking in terms of other people, ourselves, and the things we enjoy, and it’s not healthy. it’s good to be critical and conscious, but not so much so that you tear yourself down for not being perfect and can’t let yourself just have fun and enjoy stuff.

It’s what happened to Jews in Germany in 1938 when their passports were declared invalid. That is what is beginning to happen here, now, to Hispanic citizens along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Oh, is it bad to compare the GOP to Nazis? Well, if members of the GOP do not like being compared to Nazis, they should consider not behaving exactly like Nazis.

Hispanic U.S. citizens, some of whom were in the U.S. military, are not being allowed to renew their passports. This is reportedly happening to “hundreds, even thousands” of Latinos, according to a report in the Washington Post. They’re getting letters from the State Department saying it does not believe they are citizens. The government claims their citizenships are fraudulent. “I’ve had probably 20 people who have been sent to the detention center—U.S. citizens,” Jaime Diez, an attorney in Brownsville, told The Washington Post.

The Washington Post also reports on ICE officials coming to citizens’ homes and taking their passports away. This is an escalation from a few months ago, when Americans were detained by ICE officials just for speaking Spanish to one another.

The administration is currently launching an effort to take citizenship from people who they suspect of fraud in obtaining it. Fraud in these cases is exceedingly rare. The last time the government tried to strip people of their citizenship was, according to Columbia Professor Mae Ngai, during The Red Scare of the 1950s. As Ngai remarks, McCarthyism is not typically remembered as a good period in American history.

There is good reason to believe that this could portend still worse things to come for the U.S. Hispanic population, unless people begin to speak out loudly, and fast.
