really though emmerdale fucked up big time by killing liv

it completely beats me why she couldn't have been written off to go to "france" or to her mum's family in ireland. it's a soap, it's not like they need to find the most plausible exit to shelve the character for now, and it gives them the opportunity to re-visit and re-cast the character in the future, since i understand it liv's departure was because of the actress wanting to do other things. the actress is also young and could've changed her mind a couple years later, loads of them do.

it would've helped aaron's character development a lot more than just heaping more trauma on top of him. he could've had this sister to keep in touch with, mention in storylines every once in a while etc. just some family and lightness, which is what his storylines need so much. the actor's breaks could've been explained by him going to visit his sister. and obviously, it's a soap, but fr i don't know how the character would really survive killing off the one good thing to come out of his traumatic upbringing. it's that whole thing again on how it's not enough that his boyfriend has a car crash, he needs to be run over by a train as well and be mercy killed by aaron who feels responsible for both the crash and the mercy killing and starts to self-harm. trauma on trauma sandwich gets difficult to watch

i just don't understand how it helps the characters to have everyone meaningful to them inevitably die or cut them off their lives. aaron coming back angry and destroying all the family ties that they'd been building up for decades was just foolish, and the characters still haven't recovered from that. there's very little scenes between aaron and paddy, and these days rarely anything between aaron and chas either. aaron wasn't even at lydia's 50th, he's mostly having separate storylines from the dingles. it's all romantic relationship-based and current storyline-driven. and having his family say "they're done" with him again, obviously, he was violent and vile and went to the border of irredeemable as a character, but it was just clicking on the activation button for childhood abandonment and abuse, and not moving the character forward when he was clearly suffering immensely

i miss the emmerdale where the family ties were strong and there was lightness and humor within.

anyway. that's my grievances with current emmerdale

going to be a bit critical here of my Soap lmao but

idk aaron feels ooc to me lately. he came back super angry, violent, repressed and regressed. like way back to his teen years sort of regressed, only now it isn't a growing up story anymore

there was minimal resolution to that, instead they just threw him into another relationship where he's being gaslighted and where he's leaning his everything into, once again

and now he's gone to the opposite end of the spectrum as a character, where he's openly weepy at the kitchen table and telling silly dad jokes

idk. where is the grumpy but underneath v soft character pls... i like his layers and vulnerability and it's been a bit of a mess lately. idk if it's the writing or the acting or both. old emmerdale would have made a far more involved storyline about him dealing with liv's death, and not whatever this was

also i think this has been figured out at this point but the whole "i miss queerbaiting" convo is like... the part of queerbaiting that ruled was because the show was usually putting forward two dudes, those two dudes got to have character arcs and motivations and writing behind both of them. they could both be interesting individually. because neither of them were shunted into 'disposable romantic interest' for each other.

but if a gay couple on tv is now supposed to be there, writers can fall for the m/f trap of 'only one of these characters needs to be fleshed out, the other is just here to explicitly be the love interest and maybe die later' except now they can both be dudes. it's not that queerbaiting was inherently better it's that unfortunately people have always been bad at understanding what makes fictional romance compelling, which is 'who the fuck are these people in the first place and why should i care'

Like c'mon. Ross was the only one who mentioned Seb. Ross, not Robert, his bio dad. It's a clear who really loves Seb and who doesn't.
