We all love injuring our blorbos, but I think the added risk of sepsis makes it even better. They get really hurt in an unclean environment like a forest or swamp or prison, and when they're found days later, their wounds are severely infected and they're running a dangerously high fever. Time is crucial and every second counts as they're rushed back and taken to the hospital/medic, their team worried that they might lose them.

I don’t know who originally showed me this series, but this episode specifically has some good Whump/sickfic featuring an ill main character and mentions of high fever. Enjoy

Good sickfic trope is when caretaker has been annoyed with whumpee all day for various reasons; he’s too slow, he’s unfocused, he’s careless, he must not be dedicated to what we’re doing - but then, maybe mid-confrontation, they put their hands on his shoulders and realize oh. Quite a bit of heat we’re pouring off

Does anybody know any books that feature sickfic? Ive found there’s no way to really look for them, but I’d love to read some. I’d like to compile a list

Love it in sickfics when whumpee is referred to as “buddy” by a teammate turned caretaker. Particularly if that teammate isn’t the nicest of people, maybe gruff and hard to get along with. They’re friends with whumpee but not super close. However, seeing him so clearly I’ll just turns something in caretaker’s mind. “Hey, buddy,” said with the same kind of cadence as one talking to a scared dog. “You’re shaking, buddy,” “you’re burning up, buddy,” “you’re real sick, buddy.” Don’t @ me

Somewhat uncommon scene in sickfics but a good one nonetheless is when a whumpee’s fever gets so bad that caretaker (or their team) have to force them into a cold shower or bath. Whumpee just totally out of it and then shocked into a panic when that cold spray hits him; fighting against caretaker, against the cold, against the confusion. And caretaker just has to grit their teeth and push through despite whumpee’s pleas for it to stop because his fever *has* to come down
Bonus points if bro didn’t even get to strip down and is just soaked through their clothes like a wet cat

Ao3 needs a thousand more fics featuring a pairing in a cabin out in the woods, far from civilization, where one of them gets suddenly and disastrously struck with illness. Just totally burning up while it’s freezing winter outside, the caretaker worrying about having to journey outward for help. That’s it that’s the post

I love it in some sickfics when a whumpee wakes up all confused and the caretaker has to tell them the state they’re in. “You’re really sick,” “you’re burning up,” “I’m worried about you,” it all gives me such butterflies. Extra points if whumpee is/had been delirious and the caretaker has to try to make it make sense through his clouded mind just how sick he truly is

There’s something so special about the most classic depiction of illness in whump fics that I can just never get enough of
The whumpee with that cold, damp rag laid gently across his forehead. His features contorted, expression pained even in sleep as a fever absolutely siphons his strength. The flushed face, furrowed brow. Sweat never seeming to stop as his body burns up, shivering despite the heat
And don’t even get me STARTED on the caretaker sitting at the side of the bed. Looking all worried and gently pressing that hand to his cheek with delicate care. I simply cannot

I’ll always love when a caretaker gently places a hand against a whumpee’s skin and exclaims ‘you’re burning up!’
But what’s even better is when a caretaker does this to a clearly very ill whumpee and just calmly remarks ‘oh, I think you’ve got a fever coming on’. Just the undeniable confirmation that things may be about to get much worse.
