At the end of last semester, we had to clear out the building that housed the science (and art) faculties at my school because it’s being demolished. A lot of stuff no longer needed in the classroom was, sadly, thrown away, unless somebody wanted it.
I got some cool, practical furniture and a couple of old science maps and illustrations, such as the bee-themed ones above. I believe Sherlock would have liked them, too.

When you think of animals, think of this beetle, Cetonia aurata. The rose chafer is native to Europe. Its green coloration is created structurally, by reflecting circularly polarised light. It can be distinguished from similar beetles by the shape of the scutellum, the piece that extends between the base of the wings. In this beetle it is an isosceles triangle.

What a lovely leaf-cutter from the coastal dunes of Florida. I particularly like the stubtle metallic glints on the top of the abdomen. What a fantastic finish this would make to tricky out your yet black car. This species was collected by Anthony Abbate as part of his ongoing survey of Dune bee species. How vulnerable are these bees to sea level rise? A lot, pilgrim, a lot.

Minotaur Beetle (Typhaeus Typhoeus) A wonderful find on the Castagna(chestnut) farms forest floor in rural Italy. Sure, Castle del piano has its fair share of delicious cheeses, good wine, and wonderful company. However, it wasn’t the Italian charm that stole my attention as much as all of the fascinating critters in the chestnut forest - like this beautiful male Minotaur beetle.
