ᓚᘏᗢ — golden hours, golden hearts : chapter 044 !
Tumblr media
you left the door open behind you and turned away, bouquet still in your hands, your fingers brushing over the petals like they could give you answers.
sae followed you inside quietly. the door clicked shut and the room suddenly felt smaller.
the lights were low, just the warm glow of the lamp by the bed you just turned on, casting golden shadows over the soft carpet, the expensive furniture, the half-empty room service tray on the table. your half-drunk tea sat cold beside it and your suitcase was still half-packed in the corner. none of it felt real.
sae stood by the door, unsure. you were used to him being confident and composed, but now, he looked out of place, like a boy who wasn't sure if he was allowed to be here.
you placed the bouquet gently on the desk, fingers lingering longer than they needed to. "you said all that outside. why come in?"
"because i wanted to see your face."
your breath caught. he walked further in, slow, cautious. "i don't expect you to forgive me. i just needed you to know the truth."
you sat on the edge of the bed, knees tucked to your chest. he stayed standing, a few feet away, his hands in his jacket pockets. "i thought i was going crazy," you whispered. "i saw that picture and it felt like everything just shattered."
his jaw clenched. "i know."
"you should've told me about her," you said, not cruel, not cold, but hurt.
"i didn't know how to bring it up," his voice was low. "i didn't want anything from my past to ruin what i had with you. but not telling you ruined it anyway."
the silence stretched thin, taut like string pulled too tight. you glanced up at him. his eyes were on you like they always were, steadily, intensely, the way they had been the first time he kissed you, the way they always were when you weren't looking.
"you're not going to leave, are you?" you asked, not sure what answer you wanted.
"not unless you make me," he said. your throat tightened.
"do you want me to leave?"
you looked away, barely nodding while trying not to cry again. these days had drained you, emotionally and mentally and completely. and yet, with him here, something inside you felt like it was clicking back into place.
sae stepped closer. you didn't move.
he sat beside you, slow, letting the mattress shift beneath his weight. your knees brushed and your arm was warm where it touched his.
"i missed you," he said.
you blinked. "don't say that."
"why?"
"because i missed you too."
his hand reached for yours, hesitant. you didn't pull away and his fingers laced with yours like they were meant to.
"this isn't fair," you mumbled.
"nothing about this ever was," he replied.
you looked at him then, really looked. and you didn't know who leaned in first, or if it even mattered, but your lips met his in a kiss that felt like a sigh, like a confession, like a tiny crack in the dam holding your heart together.
it wasn't rushed or desperate, it was soft. familiar and almost sad. but it didn't feel wrong. and for the first time in days, you didn't feel like falling apart.
.
morning crept in through the sheer curtains of your hotel suite, casting a warm, golden hue over the room. los angeles was already stirring to life beyond the tall windows, but inside, everything felt soft and still, like the world was on pause. you shifted beneath the covers, body sore in the best way, the silk sheets brushing against your skin as memors of the night before slowly unraveled in your mind.
and then it hit you. last night.
the kiss. the tears. the way he held your face like you were breakable. the way his voice cracked when he told you he still loved you. the way he kissed you again, this time deeper and longer. the way your clothes came off, one by one. the way his hands knew exactly where to touch. the way he whispered apologies between kisses and the way your name left his mouth over and over until it sounded like it belonged to him.
you sat up slowly, the hotel blanket slipping down your shoulders, and that’s when you saw him.
sae, fast asleep on his stomach, half-buried in pillows, one arm stretched lazily across your side of the bed like he'd tried to reach for you in his sleep. his bare back was all smooth skin and toned muscle, the sheets barely covering his lower half. his hair was a mess, sticking out in a way that should've been ridiculous but only made him look impossibly perfect.
and he was very, very naked.
you couldn't stop the way your eyes trailed along the slope of his shoulders, remembering how they'd felt beneath your fingertips. you didn't realize you were staring until he stirred, groaning softly as he buried his face into the pillow.
"you're staring," he mumbled, voice rough with sleep, still thick with that post-dream haze.
flustered, you yanked the blanket higher around yourself. "i am not."
he cracked one eye open, and a lazy smirk tugged at his lips. "you are. don't be so shy now."
“sae,” you hissed, pulling the blanket up to your chin. your face was burning. “put some clothes on!”
his smirk deepened, eyes closing again as he stretched, arms flexing slightly with the movement. "why would i do that? you didn't seem to mind last night."
you groaned and grabbed the pillow beside you, throwing at his face. he caught it easily, laughing softly, and the sound wrapped around you like sunlight, warm and annoying.
"don't pretend like you're not thinking about it."
you groaned, hiding your face in the pillow. "i hate you."
"you said you loved me. exactly six times."
"shut up."
"and you called me baby. twice."
you launched the second pillow.
he caught that one too, grin widening. “you’re blushing so hard. it’s cute.” he leaned closer, brushing the hair away from your face with the back of his hand. "you know i'm not going anywhere, right?"
you met his eyes, and for a moment, all the teasing faded.
"good," he said, almost to himself. "because i meant everything i said last night. and i'll say it again, a thousand times if i have to."
and when he kissed you this time, it wasn't teasing or smug. it was slow, deliberate, and so full of affection that it made your chest ache in the best way.
God help you. you knew you were falling again. you were so in love with him ...and you were definitely in trouble.

Soooo I was on a break from tumblr for a while. And....is this what falling for clickbait feels like? There is no way your Spiderman kaiser smau ended up with yn being with ISAGI. I feel betrayed.
But in all honesty, I felt so guilty about everything, and as much as I hate it, I must admit that just compliments your skills as a writer. Well done.
hi welcome back and i deeply apologise for the emotional whiplash.. not the mid-story team switch—i felt that betrayal in my bones too but honestly, it makes perfect sense to me, isagi came in with that quiet comfort energy and stole hearts before anyone noticed.
anywayyy thank you for reading and feeling things with me, even if i emotionally ruined you a lil. appreciate you tons hehehe.
(also i have a sequel to the story soon! i just need to get back on track shshsbeb)

Tumblr media
your hotel room was too pretty to cry in.
the golden california sunset stramed through floor-to-ceiling windows , spilling across white sheets and velvet curtains, gilding everything in soft light. outside, los angeles hummed in that hazy, dreamlike way it always did, palm trees swaying against a sky so pink it looked painted. but inside, wrapped in a plush hotel robe you hadn't bothered to tie properly, everything felt hollow.
you hadn't moved much all day.
morning yoga? nope.
skyr + fruits ritual in the morning? forgotten.
30 min cardio session? not today.
you'd skipped the press event, let your manager's calls go to voicemail, muted all notifications. your phone sat on your chest as you lay sprawled across the bed, scrolling. not through instagram, but through your camera roll.
every picture hurt more than the last.
and you know it was self-sabotage, you know that it was dumb and pointless and pathetic, but still, you couldn't stop. because every picture was him. sae itoshi, in stolen moments you never realized were so fragile.
his hand in yours on the beach of rhodos. blurry polaroids from that one weekend in milan. him mid-blink, mid-bite, mid-sigh, all saved like little prayers in your gallery. reminders of a version of him no one knew. yours.
sae, half-smiling as he cooked in your kitchen. sae, asleep in your lap on a rainy afternoon. sae, blurry and beautiful and yours - or so you thought.
you could barely breathe looking at them. the ache in your chest wasn't sharp. it was slow, steady, awful, like a bruise that never faded. your throat burned when you reached that video. the one where he was watching you read, and you didn't even know he was recording. you were mouthing the words. he was laughing softly behind the camera.
you loved him. no, worse - you still did.
so you blocked him the night the photos dropped.
him and her. lanlan. kissing.
your heart had cracked then. not it just felt numb. the silence in your room was deafening, until someone rang the doorbell.
you blinked, disoriented, heart skipping once before you swung your legs off the bed and padded across the room. no room service was scheduled. no one knew your room number.
you opened the door.
sae.
standing there, hair slightly messy like he'd run his hands through it too many times. black shirt, black jeans, a huge bouquet of flowers in his arms. his eyes searched yours the second they met.
you slammed the door. or, well, tried to. because his foot was already wedged in the gap, stopping it from closing.
"please," he said, voice tight and low, more raw than you'd ever heard it. "don't shut me out. just let me talk."
you leaned your forehead against the cool edge of the door. your fingers clenched the handle. your heart pounded.
"you shouldn't be here," you said.
"i know, but i'm here now."
you wanted to scream. or cry. or disappear into the carpet. instead, you stood there, frozen.
"i didn't cheat on you," he said.
you winced. "don't start."
"i mean it. i know how it looked, but it's not what you think."
you didn't answer. he pressed the bouquet into your hands. peonies, eucalyptus, tulips, roses, little wildflowers you didn't recognize - all dewy and fresh, wrapped in parchment paper. beautiful, just like the boy who brought them.
"lanlan's not what you think either," he added quietly. "our moms... they were best friends. when we were kids, they used to say we'd grow up and get married. especially mine. she kept pushing this idea, said lanlan and i would make a perfect couple."
you stared at the flowers, pulse thrumming in your ears.
"so i tried," he said. "to be a good son. i dated her for a while. even though i never loved her. i didn't even like her that way. when i broke it off, she didn't take it well. she disappeared for years."
his voice cracked slightly, like saying it brought the guilt back.
"when she came back, she was different. obsessive. i didn't know how to handle it, so i ignored it. tried to be polite, but she twisted everything. and then that night happened, and the photo got out, and... you were just gone."
your eyes burned.
"i should've told you from the start," he said. "i should've been honest about all of it. but i didn't. and that's on me. but i swear to you, y/n, nothing ever happened. not with her."
your grip on the bouquet tightened. he looked tired. not physically, no, he was still painfully handsome, even like this. but emotionally, like he hadn't slept in days. like he hadn't been himself without you.
"i don't want to lose you," he said softly. "not like this."
a beat passed. then another. the air between you shimmered with something.
and then, you stepped back, just a little. not a yes. not a no. just enough to let him know the door wasn't locked anymore.

💌 #three nurse’s office.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you lived a perfectly ordinary life—until one day, you accidentally sent a love letter to Itoshi Rin, the guy everyone thought you had a crush on his older brother, when in reality, it was rin you were in love with all along.
wc 4k
Tumblr media
you don’t know who decided sports day was a good idea, but you’d like to have a word. maybe trip them on the track for good measure.
the entire school is buzzing with over-the-top enthusiasm. classmates shouting about races and relays like this is the olympics. meanwhile, you’re just trying to get through the day without embarrassing yourself. the sun beats down mercilessly, and the PE teachers are way too excited for their own good.
"having fun?" someone nudges your shoulder, and you sigh before even looking.
"oh, tons," you deadpan, adjusting your wristband. "nothing like public humiliation to make lifelong memories."
“btw you’re up next for the relay,”
you blink. “no, i’m not.”
“yes, you are. we’re short a runner.”
you open your mouth to argue, maybe feign sudden food poisoning, but before you can, the teacher claps their hands. “alright, let’s keep things moving! step up if you’re in the next race!”
your classmate pulls a face, and you groan, dragging yourself to the track. you've run in a relay before, but never in one this competitive. sure, you jog sometimes, but never in a setting like this. rushing to the line, you begin warming up, trying to shake off the nerves as you stretch your legs, rolling your shoulders as you steal a glance at the crowd. most students are too busy chatting or hyping up their teammates to notice you, but then your eyes land on him.
rin itoshi, standing at the sidelines, arms crossed, watching. his gaze is sharp and focused, like he's assessing something. you don’t know why he’s here. soccer players don’t usually bother with school events like these. but he’s watching, and for some reason, that makes your nerves spike even more. you couldn't tear your eyes away from him, even though you knew he caught you staring. there was something magnetic about his presence, something that made you feel as if you'd fallen into an endless gaze, searching for meaning in those unspoken words. why did it feel like he was speaking directly to you, even without a sound? your gaze was lost in a trance when you suddenly felt someone shake your shoulders.
"hello, earth to yn? i really hope you're paying attention. you're the last one to run, so you're crucial. got it?"
shaking yourself out of the daze you had slipped into, the voice snapped you back to reality.. it was the team captain, standing right in front of you, his hands still on your shoulders, trying to get your attention.
"y-yeah, got it," you stammered, trying to steady your breathing and mask the lingering confusion in your mind. his words were clear, but the strange pull of that gaze still clouded your thoughts.
he raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "focus, we're in the middle of something here."
you knew he wanted to win this. you could feel the intensity pressing in on you, and it snapped you back into the moment. he wasn’t about to let you zone out, not now.
you nodded again, forcing your mind to clear. "sorry, i was just... distracted." you could feel the heat rising in your cheeks, not sure how much of your trance he'd noticed.
he let out a small sigh, his hands falling from your shoulders. "well, try not to be too distracted next time. we need you here." his voice softened a little, though the edge was still there.
you nodded again, more determined now. whatever had been distracting you, whoever it was, it was time to shake it off. you had a role to play.
```
rin stood at the sidelines, irritation creeping up as he watched the captain storm over towards you. his eyes flicked in between, his frustration mounting. you were distracted, but this wasn’t the time to snap at you like that.
the captain’s hands landed roughly on your shoulders, shaking you to snap you out of your daze. is he serious right now?
"hello, earth to yn? i really hope you're paying attention. you're the last one to run, so you're crucial. got it?"
rin does not realise but his fists were clenched at his sides, his gaze hardening as he watched you blink, clearly startled by the captain’s harshness. he could see the confusion in your eyes, your voice stammering as you tried to get yourself together. rin didn’t care about that right now, but the way the captain was handling this… it pissed him off.
the captain’s tone didn’t soften. "focus, we’re in the middle of something here."
really? rin’s eyes narrowed, his body tensing with barely contained anger. he didn’t care if you were distracted, he sure as hell wasn’t going to let the captain tear you like that. he couldn’t have given you a moment to recover before attacking your confidence?
he couldn’t even look at the captain right now. instead, he kept his focus on you, watching your cheeks flush with embarrassment. you don't need this right now.
"y-yeah, got it," you stammered, clearly shaken, and rin could feel the heat of anger rising in his chest. you don’t treat people like that.
the captain’s voice softened, but the bite in it still stung. "well, try not to be too distracted next time. we need you here."
rin’s teeth gritted. you think you’re the only one who cares about this?
finally, the starting signal blared, and rin let out a sharp breath, his eyes following you as you stepped into position. as the runners surged forward, rin could feel the rhythm of your heart syncing with his own. you didn’t want to let your team down, especially not your captain.
he watched you take your mark, your expression tense, but there was a flicker of determination there now. he couldn’t help but feel a little relieved. you took off the second the baton was passed to you, your feet pounding against the ground as you surged forward. rin’s gaze locked on you, tracking every movement, every stride. there was no room for error now, and he could feel his heart racing in sync with yours.
the other runners were fast, faster than he expected but he couldn’t take his eyes off you. every time you stumbled, he felt it, the pressure building in his chest. he cursed under his breath when he saw you hesitate at the first corner, but you quickly found your pace again.
his fists tightened again, the anger at the captain still simmering beneath the surface. he better not be the one who’s right about you, rin thought. you’re better than this. focus.
he kept his attention locked on you, mentally willing you to keep going, to push past whatever was slowing you down. his eyes darted to the captain briefly, who was standing there, watching you with a critical eye. rin couldn’t hold back his glare. let her run in peace, he wanted to yell.
but he didn’t. instead, he let out a sharp breath and refocused on you. the way you moved, there was something fierce in your strides now. you were shaking off the distractions, and that was all that mattered.
with the baton firmly in your hand, all that was left to do now was run as fast as you could to the finish line. your legs burned, your body aching but you pushed through. and then, you caught sight of rin—his eyes locked onto you, intense and unwavering. you couldn’t deny it, seeing him there, watching you, gave you the confidence you needed to push yourself even harder.
as you pushed yourself forward, your ankle began to throb painfully. at first, it was just a dull ache, something you could ignore, but with each step, it grew worse. the burning sensation crept up your leg, making every stride feel heavier. you tried to focus, but the pain was starting to take over, and with the finish line still so far ahead, doubt crept into your mind. suddenly, you felt something, no, someone brush against you from behind, their shoulder jamming into yours with enough force to knock you off balance. the pain in your ankle flared up sharply, a searing jolt that made your vision blur for a moment. you stumbled, desperately trying to right yourself, but your foot caught wrong, and before you could react, you felt your ankle twist painfully.
the next thing you knew, you were on the ground, your knees scraping against the track, your breath caught in your throat. you tried to push yourself up, but the pain in your ankle was unbearable. tears of frustration and pain welled up in your eyes as you glanced down, realizing what had happened. someone had deliberately bumped into you, causing you to fall.
your eyes darted around in a daze, searching for the culprit, but everything felt hazy. the crowd was a blur, and the only thing you could focus on was the sharp sting in your ankle. you couldn’t finish the race like this. you couldn’t let your team down. but as you tried to push through the pain, you couldn’t stop the panic rising in your chest when all you could hear was your teammates' voices cutting through the air, impatient and harsh.
"come on, yn! get up! we need you!" one of them shouted. another yelled, "stop wasting time! you’re still in this! keep running!"
your hands trembled as you braced yourself against the ground, trying to ignore the burning pain in your ankle but their words only made it worse. they didn’t see it—they didn’t see how badly you were hurting. it wasn’t just the physical pain; it was the frustration, the feeling of being pushed aside. they didn’t understand.
you gritted your teeth, fighting back tears. why won’t they just listen?
but the yelling didn’t stop. "what’s wrong with you? you’re the last one! you need to run!"
that was the breaking point.
the anger that had been simmering in rin all this time boiled over. he couldn’t stand it any longer. his gaze turned hard as he stormed towards the track.
as the yelling from your teammates grew louder, your frustration boiled over. you were already pushing yourself beyond your limits, but their harsh words made it worse. they didn’t see the pain in your ankle, the struggle in your chest.
and then you saw rin.
without a second thought, he pushed through the crowd of people, his eyes locked onto you, determination and anger written all over his face. his expression was fierce, and there was no hesitation in his steps as he sprinted toward you.
"yn!" he called out, his voice cutting through the noise.
before you could react, rin was at your side, scooping you up into his arms with surprising ease. you gasped, feeling the heat of his body against yours as he lifted you, his arms strong and steady. the crowd gasped, whispers of confusion and awe circulating, but none of that mattered now.
voice low but full of conviction. "i’m not letting you run this alone. we’re finishing this together."
his pace didn’t falter as he began running toward the finish line, carrying you with a sense of urgency and focus. your head rested against his chest, and for a brief moment, the pain in your ankle faded into the background as you felt the solid warmth of rin’s arms holding you steady.
you wanted to protest, to tell him to put you down, to let you finish the race on your own. but as you looked up at him, his eyes focused ahead, there was a strange sense of calm that washed over you. maybe you didn’t need to do this alone.
the finish line came into view, and rin didn’t slow down. with one final burst of speed, he crossed it, his chest heaving from the effort as he finally stopped. for a moment, everything seemed to stop with him, the rush of the race fading away.
"see? we made it," rin said, his breath ragged, but his expression softening when he looked at you. "you don’t have to do everything by yourself, yn."
in his arms, you let out a shaky breath, realisimg how much you had been holding onto, not just your pain, but the weight of everything else too. rin gently set you down after crossing the finish line, his hands lingering for just a moment on your shoulders, making sure you were steady. the race had been long, and the final stretch was a blur, but the cheers from the crowd gradually faded, and the realisation set in—you didn’t win.
your team had been in a close position, but the gap between you and the others was too wide for a comeback. you watched as the last runner crossed the line, and your heart sank. the race was over, and despite everything, you hadn’t managed to push through.
before you could even catch your breath, the captain stormed over, his expression twisted with frustration. his gaze locked on you, and you immediately felt the weight of his anger.
“what the hell was that, yn?” the captain snapped, his voice sharp, cutting through the air like a blade. “you had everything you needed, and you still failed? what happened?”
you opened your mouth to explain, but the words caught in your throat. the pain in your ankle, the frustration of being ignored, it all rushed back to you.
“i don’t care about your excuses!” he yelled, his voice rising. “you cost us the race. you could’ve pushed through, but instead, you let yourself get distracted.”
the words stung more than the pain in your ankle. you had given everything you had, and yet, all the captain could focus on was the loss. the feeling of failure washed over you, thick and suffocating.
behind you, you could feel rin’s presence, his body tense, but he didn’t say anything. he was waiting—waiting for the captain to stop his tirade. you wished, more than anything, that he would say something, anything to defend you, but all you could hear was the captain’s angry voice.
"get your head in the game next time," the captain spat, turning sharply and walking away, his anger still hanging heavy in the air.
you stood there, feeling smaller with each word, the weight of it all pressing down on you. rin didn’t move, but his eyes met yours. the sting of the captain’s scolding still lingered in your chest, but in that moment, rin’s quiet presence felt like a small anchor, keeping you from sinking any further.
then rin stepped forward, his body moving with a quiet, determined force. he was no longer standing behind you, but now in front, blocking your view of the captain. his presence was like a shield, and you couldn’t help but notice the intensity in his eyes as he turned towards the captain.
“that’s enough,” rin said, his voice low but unwavering.
the captain faltered for a moment, his expression still frustrated, but now he was facing rin. “get lost itoshi.”
“i said that’s enough,” rin repeated, his tone sharp. “yn gave everything she had. you think she’s happy about losing? you think she wanted this? you had her join this race in the last minute.”
the captain’s brows furrowed, taken aback by rin’s sudden defense. he opened his mouth to argue, but rin didn’t give him the chance. “you’re supposed to be a leader, but all i hear from you is complaints. she’s hurt, and you’re yelling at her like this is her fault. you need to stop.”
rin’s eyes were burning with anger now, and the captain seemed to sense the shift in power. the whole scene felt like it was playing out in slow motion, but rin didn’t look away. his gaze was unwavering, his jaw clenched.
“you think all this win is for you?” rin added, his voice cutting through the tension. “you’re in a team. but you only care about the results. well, let me tell you something—you’re the one who’s failing if you can’t even support your teammates.”
for a brief moment, there was no sound except for the heavy breaths of everyone around. the captain opened his mouth, clearly trying to regain control of the situation, but the words faltered. his gaze met rin’s, and for the first time, the captain seemed unsure of himself.
you stood there, caught between their words, but rin’s defense gave you something you hadn’t realised you needed—validation.
rin didn’t move, his eyes still fixed on where the captain had been. slowly, his expression softened as he turned toward you. there was no judgment in his gaze, no anger, just... understanding.
“don’t let his words get to you. you did your best and that’s all that matters.”
you wanted to say something, to express your gratitude, but you were too overwhelmed by the mix of emotions to find the right words. instead, you just nodded, letting his presence soothe the ache inside you.
he glanced down at your injured ankle and didn’t hesitate for a second. without another word, he crouched down in front of you, his strong arms moving to lift you once more.
“let me take you to the nurse,” he said, his tone steady, and there was no argument in his voice. he was already lifting you in his arms before you could protest, cradling you gently against his chest.
you couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions—relief, gratitude, and even a little embarrassment. but rin didn’t seem to mind. he carried you with ease, his pace swift and focused, like he was determined to get you to safety. the weight of his body was steady and warm, and despite everything that had just happened, there was something oddly comforting about being held by him.
as he made his way through the hallways, his steps were confident, and the murmurs of the other students faded into the background. he kept his eyes ahead, making sure nothing slowed him down, and you found yourself leaning against him without even thinking about it.
“rin, you really don’t have to…” you began, but he cut you off.
“you don’t get to tell me what i have to do,” he said, his voice firm, though there was an undeniable softness underneath.
you swallowed back your words, the reality of the situation settling in. you didn’t want to be a burden, but at the same time, you couldn’t help but appreciate the way rin took charge, the way he was always there when you needed him.
by the time you reached the nurse’s office, rin carefully adjusted you in his arms, making sure you were comfortable before gently setting you down on the nearest bed. he stayed by your side, his gaze never leaving you, even as the nurse came in and began checking your ankle.
“you’ve sprained it pretty badly,” the nurse said, her voice soothing as she wrapped your ankle in a bandage. “you’ll need to rest for a few days.”
as the nurse carefully tended to your ankle, wrapping it in gauze and securing it with bandages, you winced slightly at the pressure. the pain was still sharp, but at least the worst of it was over. you let out a quiet breath, trying to steady yourself.
rin, who had been standing nearby, seemed to notice your discomfort. he moved closer and gently helped you sit up, positioning you so that your head rested lightly on his shoulder. his presence was a steady, grounding force, his warmth radiating through the fabric of his uniform.
“here,” he said softly, his voice low. you could feel the tension in his body, but it wasn’t directed at you. it was something else, something that had been building since the race. “it’ll hurt for a while. but i need you to focus on something else.”
you glanced up at him, confused, but before you could say anything, he offered his hand, holding it out in front of you. “bite down on my hand. it’ll help with the pain.”
you eyes widened in disbelief. “what?”
“just trust me,” he interrupted, his voice more serious now. “bite down hard. it’ll take your mind off the pain, and i’ll be able to feel it too. that way, we’re in this together.”
you hesitated, the weight of his words sinking in. he was offering you his hand—willingly, almost desperately. he wasn’t just trying to ease your pain; he was offering a strange form of shared experience, as if he wanted to feel it too, as if he didn’t want you to suffer alone.
still, the intensity in his eyes made it hard to refuse. he was determined, but there was a softness beneath his usual demeanor, an unexpected vulnerability that made your heart beat a little faster.
“rin, are you sure?” you asked, unsure how to process his offer.
“sure,” he replied, his voice steady.
with a small sigh, you slowly reached out and took his hand, your fingers brushing against his. his skin was warm, and there was an unspoken connection between you that only seemed to grow as you positioned your mouth over his palm. the pain from your ankle throbbed again, sharper now, but you clenched your teeth and bit down on his hand.
rin flinched slightly at the pressure but didn’t pull away. his hand remained firm beneath your grip, and you could feel him trying to remain strong for both of you. his breath hitched ever so slightly, but he didn’t make a sound.
“you’re doing… good..” he murmured, his voice soft and encouraging and awkward? “let it out if you need to. i can handle it.”
your eyes closed as you focused on his hand, the pain in your ankle still there but now slightly dulled by the strange sensation of biting into rin’s hand. it wasn’t comfortable, but somehow, the act of sharing the pain with him made it feel more bearable.
as you held onto him, the nurse finished wrapping your ankle, her hands gentle but efficient. she glanced over at rin, giving him a quiet nod, as if she could see the support he was offering in his own quiet way.
after a few moments, you slowly released his hand, breathing a little easier, your body still tingling from the effort. rin didn’t seem bothered, though, his gaze still focused on you with that quiet intensity.
“you okay?” he asked, his voice soft but filled with concern.
you nodded, feeling the pain ebb away slowly, though you could still feel the ache. “yeah i think i’m alright now.”
rin’s lips curled up into a faint smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “good. you’re a strong girl.”
rin’s hand had barely left your shoulder as you shifted your weight slightly, trying to ease the discomfort in your ankle.
“sorry,” you muttered, wincing slightly. “i’m not exactly making it easy for you, am i?”
rin raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “you think?”
you shot him a half-hearted glare, though it didn’t quite reach your eyes. “well, i wasn’t expecting a personal escort to the nurse’s office today.”
rin let out a light, amused breath, but didn’t answer right away. he helped you settle back into the bed, his hands lingering longer than you expected, as if he was making sure you were comfortable.
“you should’ve seen the look on the captain’s face when you fell,” he continued, his voice shifting to a more playful tone. “he was about to give you a speech about being a distraction.”
you snorted, the pain from your ankle momentarily forgotten in the face of his humor. "yeah, well, i’m sure he had a long list of things to yell at me about."
rin didn’t immediately respond, his eyes focusing on your face as if trying to find the right words. but instead of speaking, he just nodded, his lips pulling into a small, sincere smile.
without thinking, you leaned forward, your hand resting on his arm as you gave him a soft kiss on his cheek—an impulsive gesture, but one that felt right.
rin froze for a moment, clearly taken off guard. the kiss wasn’t anything grand, but the meaning behind it was clear. you appreciated him more than you’d ever let on.
💌 #three nurse’s office.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you lived a perfectly ordinary life—until one day, you accidentally sent a love letter to Itoshi Rin, the guy everyone thought you had a crush on his older brother, when in reality, it was rin you were in love with all along.
Tumblr media
you don’t know who decided sports day was a good idea, but you’d like to have a word. maybe trip them on the track for good measure.
the entire school is buzzing with over-the-top enthusiasm. classmates shouting about races and relays like this is the olympics. meanwhile, you’re just trying to get through the day without embarrassing yourself. the sun beats down mercilessly, and the PE teachers are way too excited for their own good.
"having fun?" someone nudges your shoulder, and you sigh before even looking.
"oh, tons," you deadpan, adjusting your wristband. "nothing like public humiliation to make lifelong memories."
“btw you’re up next for the relay,”
you blink. “no, i’m not.”
“yes, you are. we’re short a runner.”
you open your mouth to argue, maybe feign sudden food poisoning, but before you can, the teacher claps their hands. “alright, let’s keep things moving! step up if you’re in the next race!”
your classmate pulls a face, and you groan, dragging yourself to the track. you've run in a relay before, but never in one this competitive. sure, you jog sometimes, but never in a setting like this. rushing to the line, you begin warming up, trying to shake off the nerves as you stretch your legs, rolling your shoulders as you steal a glance at the crowd. most students are too busy chatting or hyping up their teammates to notice you, but then your eyes land on him.
rin itoshi, standing at the sidelines, arms crossed, watching. his gaze is sharp and focused, like he's assessing something. you don’t know why he’s here. soccer players don’t usually bother with school events like these. but he’s watching, and for some reason, that makes your nerves spike even more. you couldn't tear your eyes away from him, even though you knew he caught you staring. there was something magnetic about his presence, something that made you feel as if you'd fallen into an endless gaze, searching for meaning in those unspoken words. why did it feel like he was speaking directly to you, even without a sound? your gaze was lost in a trance when you suddenly felt someone shake your shoulders.
"hello, earth to yn? i really hope you're paying attention. you're the last one to run, so you're crucial. got it?"
shaking yourself out of the daze you had slipped into, the voice snapped you back to reality.. it was the team captain, standing right in front of you, his hands still on your shoulders, trying to get your attention.
"y-yeah, got it," you stammered, trying to steady your breathing and mask the lingering confusion in your mind. his words were clear, but the strange pull of that gaze still clouded your thoughts.
he raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "focus, we're in the middle of something here."
you knew he wanted to win this. you could feel the intensity pressing in on you, and it snapped you back into the moment. he wasn’t about to let you zone out, not now.
you nodded again, forcing your mind to clear. "sorry, i was just... distracted." you could feel the heat rising in your cheeks, not sure how much of your trance he'd noticed.
he let out a small sigh, his hands falling from your shoulders. "well, try not to be too distracted next time. we need you here." his voice softened a little, though the edge was still there.
you nodded again, more determined now. whatever had been distracting you, whoever it was, it was time to shake it off. you had a role to play.
```
rin stood at the sidelines, irritation creeping up as he watched the captain storm over towards you. his eyes flicked in between, his frustration mounting. you were distracted, but this wasn’t the time to snap at you like that.
the captain’s hands landed roughly on your shoulders, shaking you to snap you out of your daze. is he serious right now?
"hello, earth to yn? i really hope you're paying attention. you're the last one to run, so you're crucial. got it?"
rin does not realise but his fists were clenched at his sides, his gaze hardening as he watched you blink, clearly startled by the captain’s harshness. he could see the confusion in your eyes, your voice stammering as you tried to get yourself together. rin didn’t care about that right now, but the way the captain was handling this… it pissed him off.
the captain’s tone didn’t soften. "focus, we’re in the middle of something here."
really? rin’s eyes narrowed, his body tensing with barely contained anger. he didn’t care if you were distracted, he sure as hell wasn’t going to let the captain tear you like that. he couldn’t have given you a moment to recover before attacking your confidence?
he couldn’t even look at the captain right now. instead, he kept his focus on you, watching your cheeks flush with embarrassment. you don't need this right now.
"y-yeah, got it," you stammered, clearly shaken, and rin could feel the heat of anger rising in his chest. you don’t treat people like that.
the captain’s voice softened, but the bite in it still stung. "well, try not to be too distracted next time. we need you here."
rin’s teeth gritted. you think you’re the only one who cares about this?
finally, the starting signal blared, and rin let out a sharp breath, his eyes following you as you stepped into position. as the runners surged forward, rin could feel the rhythm of your heart syncing with his own. you didn’t want to let your team down, especially not your captain.
he watched you take your mark, your expression tense, but there was a flicker of determination there now. he couldn’t help but feel a little relieved. you took off the second the baton was passed to you, your feet pounding against the ground as you surged forward. rin’s gaze locked on you, tracking every movement, every stride. there was no room for error now, and he could feel his heart racing in sync with yours.
the other runners were fast, faster than he expected but he couldn’t take his eyes off you. every time you stumbled, he felt it, the pressure building in his chest. he cursed under his breath when he saw you hesitate at the first corner, but you quickly found your pace again.
his fists tightened again, the anger at the captain still simmering beneath the surface. he better not be the one who’s right about you, rin thought. you’re better than this. focus.
he kept his attention locked on you, mentally willing you to keep going, to push past whatever was slowing you down. his eyes darted to the captain briefly, who was standing there, watching you with a critical eye. rin couldn’t hold back his glare. let her run in peace, he wanted to yell.
but he didn’t. instead, he let out a sharp breath and refocused on you. the way you moved, there was something fierce in your strides now. you were shaking off the distractions, and that was all that mattered.
with the baton firmly in your hand, all that was left to do now was run as fast as you could to the finish line. your legs burned, your body aching but you pushed through. and then, you caught sight of rin—his eyes locked onto you, intense and unwavering. you couldn’t deny it, seeing him there, watching you, gave you the confidence you needed to push yourself even harder.
as you pushed yourself forward, your ankle began to throb painfully. at first, it was just a dull ache, something you could ignore, but with each step, it grew worse. the burning sensation crept up your leg, making every stride feel heavier. you tried to focus, but the pain was starting to take over, and with the finish line still so far ahead, doubt crept into your mind. suddenly, you felt something, no, someone brush against you from behind, their shoulder jamming into yours with enough force to knock you off balance. the pain in your ankle flared up sharply, a searing jolt that made your vision blur for a moment. you stumbled, desperately trying to right yourself, but your foot caught wrong, and before you could react, you felt your ankle twist painfully.
the next thing you knew, you were on the ground, your knees scraping against the track, your breath caught in your throat. you tried to push yourself up, but the pain in your ankle was unbearable. tears of frustration and pain welled up in your eyes as you glanced down, realizing what had happened. someone had deliberately bumped into you, causing you to fall.
your eyes darted around in a daze, searching for the culprit, but everything felt hazy. the crowd was a blur, and the only thing you could focus on was the sharp sting in your ankle. you couldn’t finish the race like this. you couldn’t let your team down. but as you tried to push through the pain, you couldn’t stop the panic rising in your chest when all you could hear was your teammates' voices cutting through the air, impatient and harsh.
"come on, yn! get up! we need you!" one of them shouted. another yelled, "stop wasting time! you’re still in this! keep running!"
your hands trembled as you braced yourself against the ground, trying to ignore the burning pain in your ankle but their words only made it worse. they didn’t see it—they didn’t see how badly you were hurting. it wasn’t just the physical pain; it was the frustration, the feeling of being pushed aside. they didn’t understand.
you gritted your teeth, fighting back tears. why won’t they just listen?
but the yelling didn’t stop. "what’s wrong with you? you’re the last one! you need to run!"
that was the breaking point.
the anger that had been simmering in rin all this time boiled over. he couldn’t stand it any longer. his gaze turned hard as he stormed towards the track.
as the yelling from your teammates grew louder, your frustration boiled over. you were already pushing yourself beyond your limits, but their harsh words made it worse. they didn’t see the pain in your ankle, the struggle in your chest.
and then you saw rin.
without a second thought, he pushed through the crowd of people, his eyes locked onto you, determination and anger written all over his face. his expression was fierce, and there was no hesitation in his steps as he sprinted toward you.
"yn!" he called out, his voice cutting through the noise.
before you could react, rin was at your side, scooping you up into his arms with surprising ease. you gasped, feeling the heat of his body against yours as he lifted you, his arms strong and steady. the crowd gasped, whispers of confusion and awe circulating, but none of that mattered now.
voice low but full of conviction. "i’m not letting you run this alone. we’re finishing this together."
his pace didn’t falter as he began running toward the finish line, carrying you with a sense of urgency and focus. your head rested against his chest, and for a brief moment, the pain in your ankle faded into the background as you felt the solid warmth of rin’s arms holding you steady.
you wanted to protest, to tell him to put you down, to let you finish the race on your own. but as you looked up at him, his eyes focused ahead, there was a strange sense of calm that washed over you. maybe you didn’t need to do this alone.
the finish line came into view, and rin didn’t slow down. with one final burst of speed, he crossed it, his chest heaving from the effort as he finally stopped. for a moment, everything seemed to stop with him, the rush of the race fading away.
"see? we made it," rin said, his breath ragged, but his expression softening when he looked at you. "you don’t have to do everything by yourself, yn."
in his arms, you let out a shaky breath, realisimg how much you had been holding onto, not just your pain, but the weight of everything else too. rin gently set you down after crossing the finish line, his hands lingering for just a moment on your shoulders, making sure you were steady. the race had been long, and the final stretch was a blur, but the cheers from the crowd gradually faded, and the realisation set in—you didn’t win.
your team had been in a close position, but the gap between you and the others was too wide for a comeback. you watched as the last runner crossed the line, and your heart sank. the race was over, and despite everything, you hadn’t managed to push through.
before you could even catch your breath, the captain stormed over, his expression twisted with frustration. his gaze locked on you, and you immediately felt the weight of his anger.
“what the hell was that, yn?” the captain snapped, his voice sharp, cutting through the air like a blade. “you had everything you needed, and you still failed? what happened?”
you opened your mouth to explain, but the words caught in your throat. the pain in your ankle, the frustration of being ignored, it all rushed back to you.
“i don’t care about your excuses!” he yelled, his voice rising. “you cost us the race. you could’ve pushed through, but instead, you let yourself get distracted.”
the words stung more than the pain in your ankle. you had given everything you had, and yet, all the captain could focus on was the loss. the feeling of failure washed over you, thick and suffocating.
behind you, you could feel rin’s presence, his body tense, but he didn’t say anything. he was waiting—waiting for the captain to stop his tirade. you wished, more than anything, that he would say something, anything to defend you, but all you could hear was the captain’s angry voice.
"get your head in the game next time," the captain spat, turning sharply and walking away, his anger still hanging heavy in the air.
you stood there, feeling smaller with each word, the weight of it all pressing down on you. rin didn’t move, but his eyes met yours. the sting of the captain’s scolding still lingered in your chest, but in that moment, rin’s quiet presence felt like a small anchor, keeping you from sinking any further.
then rin stepped forward, his body moving with a quiet, determined force. he was no longer standing behind you, but now in front, blocking your view of the captain. his presence was like a shield, and you couldn’t help but notice the intensity in his eyes as he turned towards the captain.
“that’s enough,” rin said, his voice low but unwavering.
the captain faltered for a moment, his expression still frustrated, but now he was facing rin. “get lost itoshi.”
“i said that’s enough,” rin repeated, his tone sharp. “yn gave everything she had. you think she’s happy about losing? you think she wanted this? you had her join this race in the last minute.”
the captain’s brows furrowed, taken aback by rin’s sudden defense. he opened his mouth to argue, but rin didn’t give him the chance. “you’re supposed to be a leader, but all i hear from you is complaints. she’s hurt, and you’re yelling at her like this is her fault. you need to stop.”
rin’s eyes were burning with anger now, and the captain seemed to sense the shift in power. the whole scene felt like it was playing out in slow motion, but rin didn’t look away. his gaze was unwavering, his jaw clenched.
“you think all this win is for you?” rin added, his voice cutting through the tension. “you’re in a team. but you only care about the results. well, let me tell you something—you’re the one who’s failing if you can’t even support your teammates.”

“you should’ve seen the look on the captain’s face when you fell,” he continued, his voice shifting to a more playful tone. “he was about to give you a speech about being a distraction.”
you snorted, the pain from your ankle momentarily forgotten in the face of his humor. "yeah, well, i’m sure he had a long list of things to yell at me about."
rin didn’t immediately respond, his eyes focusing on your face as if trying to find the right words. but instead of speaking, he just nodded, his lips pulling into a small, sincere smile.
without thinking, you leaned forward, your hand resting on his arm as you gave him a soft kiss on his cheek—an impulsive gesture, but one that felt right.
rin froze for a moment, clearly taken off guard. the kiss wasn’t anything grand, but the meaning behind it was clear. you appreciated him more than you’d ever let on.

Tumblr media
the afterparty was loud - too loud for sae's liking. music pulsed through the grand hall of the ballon d'or, glasses clinked and voices blurred together in an endless hum of celebration. people were congratulating him left and right, offering drinks, trying to pull him into conversations he had no interest in. normally, he'd tolerate it, but only if you would stand beside him. smile politely, nod, maybe throw in a few words before excusing you both. but tonight, he wasn't in the mood.
maybe it was because you weren't here.
sae exhaled slowly, swirling the water in his glass as he leaned back in his seat. he knew you weren't coming. you had already told him that you had an overseas shoot in LA that overlapped with the ceremony. he had pretended not to care, telling you to enjoy your trip.
but now, as he sat in a room full of people, the kopa trophy on the table in front of him, he couldn't help but think about how empty the victory felt without you.
he told you multiple times about how you two would attend this event and he would win the trophy for her - but why isn't he feeling better after he did win the trophy?
you would've loved this party. he could already hear your voice in his head. you would've teased him about winning, made some sarcastic remark about how "of course itoshi sae would get the kopa trophy." and then you would have-
sae sighed, shaking his head as if that would shake the thoughts of you away. it was fucking ridiculous. he wasn't the type to dwell on things like this. he really was a whipped man.
you were wicked. so so wicked for making him head over heels for you.
but then, his gaze landed on someone familiar across the room.
rensuke kunigami.
he was standing near the bar, his posture relaxed as he talked to someone. but it wasn't just anyone.
it was lanlan.
sae's brows furrowed slightly. he hadn't seen her in a while - not that he wanted - but her texts on instagram were really confusing. he didn't take them serious nor did he tell you about it. why should he? it's just an annoying bug that pretended to be important in your lives.
yet, he knew what kind of person she was. she didn't talk to people unless she wanted something.
what was her plan?
sae looked away. not interested in whatever game she was playing, but when he glanced back, lanlan was looking right at him.
she smiled, slow and knowing, before making her way toward him. her walk was smooth, the kind of confidence that came from someone who thought they still had a hold over him.
she didn't.
"sae," she greeted smoothly, slipping into the seat beside him without invitation. "where's your little girlfriend? enjoying your win all alone?"
he didn't bother looking at her. "what do you want?"
she clicked her tongue. "so cold. can't i just come congratulate you?"
he finally turned his head to meet her gaze, eyes sharp. "cut to the point."
lanlan sighed dramatically, twirling a strand of hair between her fingers. "alright, alright. i just wanted to talk. you know, catch up with my favorite ex. it's been a while."
"not long enough."
her lips curled into something between a smirk and a pout. "still as difficult as before, i see. maybe even more difficult after y/n. what did she do to you?"
sae didn't respond. he didn't need to. he already knew how this conversation would to. she would try to flirt, try to remind him of what they used to be, and he would shut her down, just like before.
it was a waste of his time. he'd rather be in his hotel room, calling you.
but before he could tell her to leave, she suddenly grabbed his wrist, standing up and tugging him along.
he immediately resisted, irritation flashing through him. "the hell are you doing?"
"just talk to me for a second," she said, her grip tight. "somewhere more private."
"i don't have anything to say to you."
but she didn't let go. instead, she pulled him toward a quieter corner, away from the main crowd. and before he could even process what she was doing-
she kissed him.
ew.
sae reacted instantly, shoving her back with enough force to put distance between them. his jaw clenched, eyes burning with irritation.
"the fuck was that?" he bit out, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
lanlan tilted her head, feigning innocence, but there was something smug in her expression. "come on, saesae. wasn't that bad, was it?"
he scoffed, his voice ice-cold. "you're pathetic."
her smirk faltered for just a second before she rolled her eyes. "you used to like me, you know. but that bitch destroyed everything."

may the odds be ever in your favor - itoshi rin
fem!reader
Tumblr media
“and the male tribute of district 12 is…”
you watched with bated breath, wiping your hands on your flowy skirt once more. you were wearing your best clothes for reaping day; something you never understood. why would you dress nicely to be delivered to your death? the seam was never known for it's incredible clothing nor hygiene after all.
“itoshi rin!”
your heart dropped.
rin was your best friend; you've known him ever since you were both still only 4 years old, and you were both 17. rin had put his name in for an extra amount of times in the reaping for tesserae. last year was his older brother's sae last year to be picked for the hunger games, and luckily, sae managed to not be picked once by the reaping ceremony.
rin wasn't so lucky.
you watched as rin stalked up the stairs, hands trembling. you watched as he stood next to the escort for district 12, anri teieri. “and now for the ladies!” she said cheerfully; too cheerfully, one might've added. sticking her hand into the bowl of young girls, she picked out a name and slipped it open.
“(y/n) (l/n)!”
your stomach lurched, and you slowly stepped towards the stage, tears wetting your lashes. you stood in front of rin, his eyes widening a fraction as he mouthed your name. “now, may the tributes shake hands!” both at both of your stiffness, anri took both of your right hands and clasped them together, forcefully shaking them.
“and may the odds be ever in your favor.”
you didn’t have any time to meet with your family members one last time, as you were both shoved onto the train to the capitol.
you, rin, and anri both sat around a round glass table. your supposed mentor, julian loki, sat a few feet away from you and rin; as a normal capitol citizen should. there were no previous district 12 winners, so therefore, a student of the academy there would be your mentor.
“now, for the both of you…” loki began, inspecting both of your faces. “you’ve both got good faces. i can imagine many of the capitol citizens would bet on you because of looks alone; especially you, rin. but what about your combat skills? and charisma?”
this whole train ride, you’ve been silent, but finally, you spoke up. “rin’s strong and fast. he’s good at kicking and he’s got good eyes.” you spoke your words like rapid fire but shutting up, rin’s eyes darting to you.
“(y/n)’s funny and likable. she’s good at hiding and good with nature.” rin replied right back. for a moment, you both just stared at one another in silence. finally, loki cleared his throat.
“that’s good. and im considering you both know each other well?” loki asked, taking a sip of his whiskey. you nodded hesitantly.
“yeah. we…we’ve known each other for a while.”
“then you can both be allies for the games.” loki said, taking out a golden pen and notebook, scribbling something inside. “president ego particularly enjoys this sort of stuff, although im not sure what head gamemaker chris prince will say about two people from district 12 allying up…but what can he do?”
anri nodded. “well, eat up. you guys will need to put on some weight to maximize energy. we’ll probably be arriving at the capitol at 9 AM tomorrow.”
a few silver platters were placed on the table, and both your eyes and rin’s went wide as circles when you saw just the amount of luxurious food there was in front of you. there was never this much food in district 12, especially not food that smelled so heavenly.
forgetting about the hunger games for a moment, you stuffed as much as you could in your mouth, uncaring about what food it was. all you could think about was how delicious the food was, and how different it was from the food at district 12. rin dug in as well, his cheeks round like chipmunks as he ate.
loki and anri looked at each other before shrugging. well, this might be one of your last meals after all.
you only remembered the names of the tributes might be threats to you and rin.
district one. isagi yoichi.
district two. mikage reo.
dissect three. karasu tabito.
district four. barou shoei.
district five. nagi seishiro.
district six. otoya eita.
district seven. karasu tabito.
district eight. bachira meguru.
district nine. yukimiya kenyu.
district ten. chigiri hyoma and his sister koyuki hyoma.
district eleven. kunigami rensuke.
one week later, you stepped foot into the arena, inhaling deeply to calm your nerves. you are rin both glanced at each other before you gave him a small nod.
5…4…3…2…1.
you and rin both bolted away from the cornucopia, not wanting to engage in a bloodbath. there was a forest a few hundred yards from the cornucopia, and you and rin had both met each other there. sitting down from exhaustion, you glanced at him. “i wonder how many of them just died from the cornucopia alone.”
“i don’t think purple made it out alive. the one from district two? i heard him scream.” rin muttered. “although the hassle guy from district five might’ve saved them; they were close during the training.”
“well, out least we made it out of the first most deadly five minutes of the games alive: the bloodbath.” you grinned. he raised an eyebrow at you.
“that’s not something to cheer about. the people who survive the bloodbath are the most deadly, meaning that the most deadly people are still alive.” rin mumbled. “let’s go find some water. it’s the most important thing to find on the first day.”
you nodded, standing up and following him.
it was supposed to just be a search for some berries.
but isagi was atop you, dagger plunged into your stomach, scarlet oozing out of your mouth and stomach. Isagi bit down on his lip, swallowing. tears stained his cheeks as he panted, gripping the handle of the dagger. “im sorry, (y/n), but i had to.” he whispered.
you knew isagi wasn’t an ally, not when he was probably the most dangerous tribute aside from rin, receiving a training score of 11 along with rin. but he always treated you politely, even having wished you good luck before the game started.
“rin!” you screamed, your voice shrill. “rin! where are you, rin?!” tears leaked from your eyes. you wanted to at least see him one last time before you died. isagi sighed before he stood up and walked away and vanished into the forest.
right as isagi left, you finally saw the familiar eyes of sea glass. “(y/n)?” rin asked weakly, before he sprinted over and kneeled down next to you. “(y/n)!” he hollered, tears at his eyes.
“nonononono— no, you’re okay—!” he whimpered, plunging the dagger out before ripping off his jacket and wrapping it around your stomach. you whined from the pain. “you’ll live, you’ll live—“ rin muttered.
“r-rin…”
“stop it. stop talking. you’ll be okay.”
“rin, i…” with the little remaining strength you had, you gripped his hand. your eyes softened as he pressed on your wound, attempting to stop the bleeding.
“i wish we could have lived a normal life together. i wished we could have joked around more often. i wish we could have spent longer together. i wish we could’ve gotten married and had kids and sang together more often with the Covey. i wish we could go into the illegal wired area of district 12 that we were always too scared to go into. i wish we could have gotten that thing called ice cream that the people from districts 1 and 2 and the capitol always have.”
“(y/n)—“
“rin, i love you.”
silence followed, and for a few moments, everything was ghostly silent. it began to rain, the gamemakers way of mocking him, and finally, rin broke.
most of the tributes weren’t there to witness your skin growing cold or your eyes going dark, and yet the dreadful scream that itoshi rin let out at that moment alerted everything that his beloved (y/n) had died.
he cradled you in his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “no, please, don’t leave me. please, don’t go.”
if only you could have responded.
isagi and rin were the only tributes left.
both of their knives at each other’s neck, they were both practically already half dead. “prince! they’re both going to die at this point, and this year will end with no victor!” a gamemaker, agi, exclaimed. chris prince hummed for a moment before typing something into his floating keyboard.
“let’s end it here. it’ll be entertaining for two people to have won the games this year and one of them having killed the other’s lover.” prince said. he tapped a button, allowing him to speak to isagi and rin.
“attention! isagi yoichi of district 1 and itoshi rin of district 12 are the victors of the 32th hunger games!”
they both looked up, wide eyed and bloody. a helicopter flew over them, letting down a ladder. they both climbed aboard the ship and were instantly transferred to medical support.
rin had 7 stabs on both of his legs, 3 stabs of his right arm, and one stab on his stomach. isagi had 5 stabs all over his torso and 9 stabs on his limbs in total, although he had received a severe head injury from a large rock being thrown at his head from barou as a last attempt to kill isagi before barou died.
itoshi rin didn’t make it.
in 2006, japan, kanagawa prefecture, you saw itoshi rin at an ice cream store for the first time when you were four.

💌 #two when the past comes running.
Tumblr media
you lived a perfectly ordinary life—until one day, you accidentally sent a love letter to Itoshi Rin, the guy everyone thought you had a crush on his older brother, when in reality, it was rin you were in love with all along.

Tumblr media
“alright, if we’re doing this, let’s do it properly. let’s exchange contact info.”
you gave rin a flat look. “you mean you don’t have it already?”
“i don't have it saved.”
you scoff, shaking your head as if he just insulted you. "bitch, we have one class together," you mutter under your breath.
"what was that?"
"nothing, sorry."
"thought so." he tapped lazily at his screen before shoving his phone toward you without looking up. “here. add yourself. don’t make me regret this.”
you snatched the phone from his hand, rolling your eyes. “trust me, i’m the one with regrets.”
you narrowed your eyes at him before saving your contact with a very fitting name, rin the vanisher.
“also, we need to set up some ground rules. no kissing, no hugging without permission, anything else?” rin’s voice was steady, like he was setting the rules for a game neither of you were ready to play.
you raised an eyebrow. “no kissing?” you said with a slight smirk. “what’s next, no holding hands?”
he shrugged, his expression still unreadable. “we could hold hands, but only around school.”
you raised an eyebrow at his casual offer, your mind spinning. hold hands? just around school?
rin noticed your hesitation and smirked, clearly amused by your confusion. “what, you’re not up for it?” he teased, his tone barely masking the challenge beneath.
you crossed your arms, fighting the inexplicable warmth that spread across your face. “it’s not that. just seems strange for a couple to only hold hands, that’s all.”
his shrug was nonchalant, his expression unreadable as always. “whatever. it’s just a gesture. we’re not actually dating anyways.”
you bit your lip, was he truly this detached, this uninterested in the emotional weight of his words and actions?
you let out a long breath as you walked to school with rin the next day. things were still awkward, but you both seemed to have settled into a sort of routine. talking just enough to avoid silence, but not enough to make it feel real. and then, just as you and rin reached the school gates, otoya intercepted you, a mischievous grin already plastered on his face.
“hey, sweetheart, you got a minute?”
you didn’t expect the shift in tone that came next. otoya wasn’t being his usual teasing self. there was something serious in his eyes, a strange sincerity you weren’t prepared for.
“i don’t really believe you two are together.” otoya, who stood with his arms crossed, completely unreadable.
you froze, unsure of how to respond, but otoya's next words caught you off guard. "or is this some kind of charade you two are putting on?" he asked, his gaze shifting between you and rin. "because, as far as i know, this so-called 'boyfriend' of yours," he added, pointing to rin, "ignored you for... hmm, how many years has it been?"
the words hit harder than you anticipated. before you could react, rin shifted slightly, his cool composure cracking for just a second as he stood taller.
“you need to stop messing around with her, otoya,” rin muttered, his voice low and serious.
“okay, boyfriend. but, just so you know, y/n," he said, twirling a strand of your hair whilst stepping closer, a teasing edge in his voice, "that letter? feels like our story's still unfinished.”
there was something in otoya's voice. was it giving jealousy desperate ex-boyfriend?
you could feel the heat rise in your chest as the tension between the three of you thickened.
you rolled your eyes, trying to ignore the way his fingers brushed against your hair. "don't read too much into it," you muttered.
otoya chuckled softly, unfazed. "don’t worry, i’m not here to relive the past… unless you miss it." he said, leaning in just enough to make your breath hitch. "but... if you wanted one, you know where to find me."
his words carried heavy unspoken things. it wasn’t just his usual flirting, there was something deliberate in the way he was pushing boundaries.
rin, who had been silent until now, let out a quiet scoff. "is that your best line?" his voice was cold, but there was a tightness in his jaw that you didn’t miss.
otoya only smiled wider. "worked once," he said, shrugging, before flicking his gaze back to you. "might work again."
the next few days passed, and surprisingly otoya had left you alone. no sudden appearances. no sly remarks. it was almost unsettling how quiet he’d been. and lately you found yourself walking to school with rin every morning. he only walked you home on the days he didn’t have soccer practice, but even then, the two of you barely spoke. still, there was something oddly familiar about it. the quiet company, the unspoken understanding. it almost felt like you were a kid again, heading home with both sae and rin, as if nothing had ever changed. but this time sae wasn’t here anymore. it was just the two of you now, caught between the past and whatever this was supposed to be.
"what does your popsicle say, y/n? sae and i won!" 4 year old baby rin squealed, his voice full of excitement.
you sniffled, tears welling up as you looked up at him.
rin's smile faltered, and he frowned. "you lost? here, take mine," he said, handing over his popsicle. "now i'm the loser, blehh. don’t cry."
as the memory resurfaced, a small smile tugged at your lips. you caught yourself, suddenly realising you weren’t alone.
"what’s gotten into you?" rin’s voice broke your train of thoughts, his expression as stoic as ever.
"oh, nothing. just remembered a memory," you replied, trying to hide the faint nostalgia in your voice.
rin raised an eyebrow, his gaze lingering on you for a moment, as if trying to decipher what had just crossed your mind. “a memory that happy?” he sounded almost... curious?
you nodded, feeling a little embarrassed for smiling like an idiot. "yeah. from when we were kids. when you were a decent human being then, you gave up your popsicle stick for me just because i lost."
there was a brief silence before rin muttered, "tch, brat." but his tone, though still sharp, held something softer beneath it, like a faint echo of the person he used to be.
you couldn’t help but grin at the memory, despite the teasing tone. "you were a lot nicer back then, you know."
rin’s eyes flickered to you for a split second, but he said nothing, his expression unreadable. “people change."
the words hung in the air between you, heavy with meaning, and for a moment, you wondered if you were talking about more than just popsicle sticks.
"wait here." he suddenly said before running off.
did you say something wrong? or was he going to leave you here all alone. anyway, your patience was wearing thin, until you felt a light touch on your back. you turned around to see rin, looking as if he hadn’t just sprinted off like a maniac, casually tossing you a popsicle, identical to the ones from when you were younger.
"here," rin said, his breath still heavy but his expression unreadable.
you blinked, caught off guard. "you seriously—"
he shoved one into your hand before you could finish. "it’s not that deep. just eat it. don’t make it weird, it’s just a popsicle.”  he muttered, avoiding your gaze.
for a moment, you stood there, holding the popsicle, a wave of nostalgia washing over you. "thanks," you said softly, but there was a hesitation in your voice, something you couldn’t quite place.
rin didn’t respond, he just clicked his tongue, turning away before you could say anything else. as if the moment didn’t matter to him at all.
“i lost, what did you get?” you leaned over his shoulder, trying to peek at his popsicle stick.
“you always lose.” rin tilted his popsicle toward you with a smug look. “guess i’m just built different.”
as you pout at his teasing, rin suddenly snaps his popsicle stick in half and hands you one side.
"what—" you blinked at him. "you won, though."
he just shrugged, looking away. “doesn’t matter. it’s just a dumb game."
for a moment, something tugs at your chest. it’s such a small gesture, but it gives you a glimpse of the rin you used to know—the one who, despite all his grumbling, always looked out for you.
would he still do that now? or was this just an old habit resurfacing by accident?
“promise we’ll be friends forever?” baby rin’s voice was full of innocent earnestness, his small hand extending toward you.
“of courseee, but only if sae joins us!” you replied, beaming with joy, your eyes sparkling like the world was still full of endless possibilities.
rin’s expression faltered. he crossed his arms, looking off to the side as a slight pout formed on his lips. “i’m starting to think you like my older brother more than me.”
you laughed, unaware of the jealousy brewing in his little heart. “what? no way! you’re my best friend, rin.”
if there was something different between the two guys, it was definitely the way they treated you. otoya? he had always known how to make you feel wanted. effortless charm, easy smiles—he made everything feel light and easy, like the world was a game he was always winning but that was the problem. nothing ever felt serious. not when you were dating. not even now.
rin, on the other hand, he wasn’t loud about how he cared. but lately, when no one else was watching, he was… different.
like when you forgot your notes in class during english lesson in middle school, and how he handed them to you without a word but you knew he’d gone back to get them or how he always walked on the outside of the sidewalk, subtly keeping you on the safer side. it was the little things. quiet. thoughtful. then there were the moments when he’d catch you looking at him. for just a second, the usual ice in his eyes would soften, something unreadable flickering beneath the surface before he’d blink it away and go back to being distant. you told yourself it didn’t mean anything. that this was how rin acts around people. but when you stared down into his teal eyes. one that seemed to see right through you, your heart did something stupid.
then when otoya came back after you accidentally sent out that letter. after a year of silence, after leaving you behind like none of it mattered, he waltzed back into your life as if nothing had changed. and just like that, everything you’d tried so hard to push down came rushing back. the memories. the late night phone calls where you used to laugh until your stomach hurt. and the ache—the one you thought you’d buried. you realised you were never enough to make him stay. and maybe the worst part? he still knew exactly how to get under your skin. every teasing glance, every smooth remark chipped away at the armour you’d built around yourself.
rin seemed to notice, because the more otoya hovered around you, the more rin stuck close. his touches became more deliberate—his arm brushing yours when you walked side by side, his hand catching your wrist when otoya came too close. he didn’t say much, but the shift was there, something sharper in his gaze, something harder in the way he looked at otoya.
and despite how cold he could be, rin never let you face otoya alone.
as you both finally arrived at your doorstep, the weight of the conversation still hanging between you, but neither of you said a word. the silence was almost comforting in its own way, despite the tension that seemed to linger in the air. rin stopped a few feet from the door, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his gaze drifting to the sidewalk as if he were considering whether to say anything more.
“well,” he began, his voice a little less sharp than usual. “you’re home. guess that’s it for today.”
you raised an eyebrow, still unsure of what to make of everything that had just transpired. “right. i guess i’ll see you around, rin.”
for a moment, it looked like he might say something else, but he just gave a small nod, his gaze avoiding yours. you watched him walk off, the sound of his footsteps fading in the distance.
you closed the door behind you with a soft sigh, leaning against it for a moment as you processed the past few days. your mind replayed everything, from the awkward kiss to the conversation with rin. it all felt so surreal, like a weird dream you were struggling to wake up from.
still, you couldn't shake the feeling of being caught between the past and the present. you glanced at your phone, noticing a text from your sister, a reminder of what you had intended to do that morning.
“hey, did you send that letter? are you good?”
you hesitated before typing a response, unsure how much to tell her about the disaster that had unfolded but you knew you couldn’t hide this forever.
the next few days pass, and things between you and rin remain the same. you still see him before, during and after school, and the quiet moments between you two have become something of a routine. but one afternoon, as you're walking home together, rin’s phone buzzes, pulling him out of his usual detached state. he took a glance at it briefly, then slips it back into his pocket without saying a word. you notice the change in his demeanor. there's a subtle tension there now, something more than just his usual cool exterior.
“what’s going on?” you ask, trying to sound casual but failing to hide the concern in your voice.
rin’s lips curl into a tight smile, but it doesn't reach his eyes. “nothing,” he mutters. “just soccer.”
you know it’s more than that. he’s been off lately, distracted. the school championship is just around the corner, and you’ve seen the pressure building on him in the past few weeks. maybe that’s what’s really going on. he’s stressed, and all of it is beginning to pile up.
but just as you’re about to press him on it, you remember that you’ve got your own things to deal with. otoya’s still causing trouble, and you’re not entirely sure what to do about the love letters anymore.
suddenly, rin speaks up. “hey,” he says, his tone different from usual. “the school championship’s next week. you should come and watch me play.”
you stole a glance at him, trying to gauge whether this is just a throwaway comment or if there's more to it. you don’t say anything immediately, caught in the moment.
“why?” you finally ask, voice a little quieter than you intended.
rin shrugs, his gaze flicking to the side but not meeting yours. “because what kind of girlfriend would you be if you don’t come to your boyfriend’s game?”
boyfriend. Oh!
he turns toward you fully, his usual mask of indifference slipping slightly. “i guess i want to see if you’ll actually show up. don’t make me regret asking.”
you hesitate, your eyes scanning his face for any sign of what he means. you’ve never seen him quite like this, no sarcasm, no teasing. just an honest invitation.
without thinking too hard about it, you nod. “i’ll be there.”
for a second, rin doesn’t say anything. then, a small smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth, like he’s satisfied with your answer.
you can’t help but wonder what’s going on inside his head. what’s this invitation really about? but for now, you let the questions go, focusing on the one thing that’s certain, rin’s going to be counting on you to be there.
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
the stadium was electric as rin and his team dominated the field. his movements were swift, precise, and full of a confident energy that had every pair of eyes glued to him. his effortless grace, his athleticism, it was all on display as he darted across the field, commanding attention like he was born to play.
a group of girls seated nearby couldn’t keep their eyes off him, whispering to each other with voices practically dripping with envy.
"look at rin. he's so perfect out there," one girl breathed, her voice full of longing.
another girl leaned forward, eyes locked on rin. "did you see how his muscles flex when he kicks the ball? like, god, he’s built for this sport" her voice dropped to a dreamy whisper. "he’s like a pro already."
you rolled your eyes, pretending not to hear them, but deep down, a strange feeling gnawed at your stomach. you knew rin didn’t care about their attention—he never did. he was too focused on the game, too absorbed in every pass, every goal. but the girls were fawning over him, and for some reason, it bothered you more than you expected.
one of the girls, clearly trying to get the attention of everyone around, leaned over and whispered loudly enough for you to hear. "i heard rin’s got someone now. think it’s true?"
your jaw clenched. you glanced at rin on the field. he didn’t even notice the whispering. his focus was on the game, on making that perfect shot, on leading his team to victory. to him, it was just another match. but to the girls around you, he was a prize.
the whispers continued, and for a moment, you debated just ignoring them. but then, something inside you snapped. you weren’t going to sit quietly while they speculated about rin like he was some unattainable object.
without thinking too much about it, you stood up and moved toward the edge of the stands. rin was right there, focused entirely on the ball, unaware of the growing tension behind him.
one of the girls giggled as rin briefly glanced up, his eyes scanning the crowd. that was when you made your move. you leaned against the railing, catching his attention with a wave.
rin’s gaze flickered toward you, and for a split second, you saw the slightest flash of confusion in his eyes but you didn’t back down. instead, you gave him a playful, teasing smile and called out, “looking good out there, rin! keep it up!”
the girls behind you froze. their eyes snapped to you in surprise, and you could practically feel the envy radiating off them. a few whispers followed, the words barely audible as they exchanged quick, incredulous looks.
“did she just she call him rin? like, ugh as if she knows him?”
"who does she think she is?"
you couldn’t help the smirk that tugged at your lips. it wasn’t much, but it was enough. the jealous stares burned into your back, and you almost reveled in it. you’d never really cared about what people thought especially when it came to rin but right now, seeing them squirm felt oddly satisfying. you hadn’t expected this side of yourself to come out.
rin, meanwhile, only gave you a half-hearted, indifferent smirk. his lips barely curled as he nodded, acknowledging your shout like he would any random person. “yeah, yeah,” he muttered, returning his focus to the game.
you could almost feel the eyes of the girls on you as they turned to gossip in hushed voices. they weren’t pleased with the way you’d inserted yourself into their little daydreams about rin, and you couldn’t deny the growing sense of triumph that followed.
as the game progressed, rin scored a goal. the crowd erupted in cheers, and you jumped up from your seat, clapping louder than anyone else around you. it wasn’t because you were some obsessed fan; it was because, in that moment, the power balance felt like it was shifting. you were part of it.
the way he scored that last goal brought you back to the time he scored his very first goal. you’ve seen it all—the moments that led to this.
it started when rin was just a kid, standing on the sidelines of his brother’s matches, eyes locked on sae with a quiet intensity. you could see how much the little boy admired him, how desperate he was to measure up. the younger version of rin was all about trying to be someone else—but it was clear that soccer, at least back then, wasn’t his thing yet.
you were there the day he first touched the ball, a nervous, uncertain move that made you question if he was actually going to enjoy it. his focus was always on sae’s shadow, not the ball. as the weeks went on, as practices turned into games, something started to shift. rin started looking at soccer differently—not through his brother’s eyes anymore but as something he could call his own. when he finally scored his first goal, the one that wasn't just the product of being at the right place at the right time, but the one where he earned it. his own play, his own effort. the way his face lit up, the subtle pride that crossed his features—it was like seeing the real rin for the first time.
and you’d been there for every step after that.
you watched him grow as a player. getting faster, stronger, sharper. at first, you could tell it was about following in sae’s footsteps, trying to mirror his movements, his plays, but slowly, he started finding his own rhythm. to you, he was no longer just sae’s little brother on the field. he was rin, a striker, a player with a style all his own.
soccer became his world. it wasn’t just about impressing others anymore, it was about the thrill of the game, the rush of the ball against his foot, the way the crowd’s cheers felt when he scored. and you saw it all from the sidelines, witnessing his transformation from the quiet boy to the confident player he’d become.
rin’s love for soccer wasn’t something he’d always been sure of, but over the years, it had become undeniable. and you had been there through all of it, the awkward beginnings, the growing pains, the victories, and the losses. you’d seen him at his best and his worst, but you never stopped being by his side.
watching him on the field now, you could almost hear his heartbeat, each step and each kick an echo of how far he’d come. this was rin’s place. his freedom, his joy. and no one could take that away from him, not even his older brother, not anymore.
and you’d witnessed it all, the moments that had shaped him into the player he was, and the person you were still getting to know.
 as rin jogged back toward the sidelines, his face flushed with the adrenaline of the game, you couldn’t contain the overwhelming sense of pride that swelled inside you. you leaned forward slightly, searching for his eyes in the sea of faces. when he finally met your gaze, you smiled, the biggest, brightest smile you’d ever given anyone. your heart pounded as you locked eyes with him, and in that moment, it felt like this relationship was real.
“i’m so proud of you,” you said, the words leaving your lips before you could second-guess them. “look how far you’ve come.” the weight of the moment hit you suddenly, and before you knew it, tears welled up in your eyes. you blinked rapidly to hold them back, but the emotion was too strong. this wasn’t just about soccer—it was about everything he’d overcome, everything he was still fighting for.
rin, who was still catching his breath stopped infront of you. he blinked in confusion for a moment before his gaze softened just slightly just enough to notice the vulnerability in your eyes. without saying another word, rin reached out and cupped your face with one hand. his touch was gentle, almost tender, before he leaned in and kissed your cheek, his lips brushing against your skin in a fleeting, unexpected gesture.
"idiot, you’re still emotional as ever" he muttered under his breath, but there was something about the way he said it. so much softer than usual, almost fond. you couldn’t help but smile through your surprise, feeling a rush of warmth spreading from your cheek where he’d kissed you.
you wiped away the stray tear that had escaped, feeling a sense of quiet contentment settle over you. “you’re not so bad, you know that?” you teased, your voice soft but steady.
rin raised an eyebrow at you, his usual aloofness creeping back into his expression. “i know.”  there was something different in his eyes now. maybe it was the kiss, maybe it was the way you’d looked at him with such raw pride. either way, he wasn’t pulling away anymore, not entirely.
meanwhile the girls behind you, now whispering more fervently, glanced your way, casting jealous glances with eyes that burned with the kind of envy you rarely saw.
after the crowd died down, indicating that the match was over, rin’s team was in high spirits, celebrating their win. one of his teammates suggests going out for food, and before rin can refuse, someone adds, “bring your girl too, itoshi. didn’t she cheer the loudest?”
rin barely reacts while he just shoots the guy an unimpressed look, but then his gaze shifts to you. "you coming or not?" his tone is flat, as if he couldn't care less about your answer.
you roll your eyes but nod. "yeah, why not?"
it’s not like you’re about to miss out on free food. plus, you’re curious, this is the first time in years you’ll be around rin outside of school or the occasional forced interaction.
as the restaurant is buzzing with energy, mostly from rin’s teammates still high off their victory. they’re loud, laughing and teasing each other and you can’t help but notice how different rin is from them. he doesn’t join in on the chatter, just picks at his food in silence, his presence more like a shadow than a part of the group.
and yet, somehow, everyone still revolves around him.
“maaaaaan, i can’t believe we pulled that off,” one of the players says, grinning. “rin, you really carried at the end.”
rin shrugs. “do your job properly next time so i don’t have to.”
his bluntness earns a round of groans, but no one argues.
you shake your head, amused, when someone slides into the seat beside you. otoya.
“so, you and rin.” his tone is casual, but there’s an unmistakable glint of mischief in his eyes.
you raise an eyebrow. “what about us?”
otoya leans in slightly, resting his chin on his hand. “nahh i just never expected him to actually date someone.” his smirk widens. “especially someone with a personality.”
you snort. “wow. are you done?”
“just saying.” he grins. “but hey, if he ever gets too boring for you, let me know.”
before you could respond, a glass clinks against the table, harder than necessary.
you glance up to see rin standing over otoya, his expression unreadable, but his eyes sharp. “find another seat.”
otoya raises his hands in mock surrender. “relax, itoshi. just making conversation.” but he stands anyway, flashing you one last grin before walking off.
rin doesn’t even glance at you. he slides into the seat otoya just left and picks up his drink. he takes slow sips of his drink like he doesn’t have a care in the world. but the slight tension in his jaw tells you otherwise.
just as otoya walks away, laughter ripples around the other end of the table.
“i didn’t expect rin to be the first to have a girlfriend. or maybe you’re just one of those girls who clings to him ‘cause he’s famous now. or maybe because otoya didn’t work out so you chose rin instead!” his eyes flicker over you, like he’s trying to find something to pick apart. “bet you wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t—”
your breath catches.
it’s not just a joke anymore. it’s an insult, one that cuts deeper than it should. maybe you were using him, to get rid of otoya, which is clearly not going too well but you knew this boy before he could even wipe the drool off his chin!
before you can even think of a response, a sharp voice cuts through the noise.
“shut up.”
rin.
the table goes silent. you blink, turning to him, but his gaze is locked onto the guy who spoke, his expression unreadable except for the sharp edge to his voice, the barely restrained irritation in his posture.
the guy blinks, like he wasn’t expecting rin to actually say anything. “relax, man, it’s just a joke”
“it’s not a joke if i’m not laughing.” rin repeats, tone as cold as ice. his voice isn’t loud, but it’s enough to make the entire table stiffen. “you’re not funny.”
the guy scoffs, but there’s a nervous edge to it now. “damn, alright, no need to get all cocky and defensive”
rin stands up.
he doesn’t say another word, doesn’t even glance at anyone else. he just grabs his bag, then turns to you.
“let’s go.”
it’s not a question. it’s a command.
the entire table watches, stunned, as you hesitate for only a second before pushing your chair back and following him out. the moment the restaurant doors swing shut behind you, the night air hits your skin like a breath of fresh air. rin keeps walking, hands shoved into his pockets, not looking at you.
“…rin,” you start.
“don’t.” his voice is clipped. “i didn’t do it for you.”
you pause, surprised at the sudden response. “then why?”
he exhales, his pace slowing just slightly. “because they’re idiots.”
it’s a weak excuse. you both know it. but for now, it’s all he’s willing to give and somehow, that’s enough.
the night air is thick with unspoken words. rin is still tense, his shoulders stiff as he walks a few steps ahead of you, hands shoved deep into his pockets.
you quicken your pace until you're beside him. “sooooo, wanna tell me why you did that?.”
“nope, and i didn’t do it for you,” rin mutters, eyes straight ahead.
you roll your eyes. “yeah, yeah, you already said that but you didn’t deny what otoya said earlier.”
rin scoffs. “you really believe that idiot?”
you smirk. “you tell me. you sure looked pissed when he was talking to me.”
rin stops walking so abruptly you almost crash into him. when you look up, his expression is unreadable. his usual flat gaze, but there’s something beneath it. annoyance? frustration?
“you really wanna do this now?” he asks, voice clipped.
“yes.”
rin exhales sharply through his nose, tilting his head back slightly as if he’s debating whether to even entertain you. then, suddenly, like something inside him snaps, he takes a step closer.
“fine,” he mutters. “yeah, i didn’t like it. that what you wanna hear?”
your eyes widen slightly. you weren’t expecting him to give in so easily. “maybeee? were you jealous?”
rin groans, dragging a hand down his face. “i swear to—”
before he could finish, your stomach grumbles. loudly.
the tension between you evaporates instantly. rin stares at you, deadpan. “…are you serious?”
you press a hand to your stomach, embarrassed. “it’s not my fault! i barely ate anything in there.”
rin sighs, muttering something under his breath before turning on his heel. “c’mon.”
you blink. “huh?”
“there’s a convenience store nearby.” he doesn’t even look at you as he starts walking. “go get food before you starve to death.”
you grin, jogging a little to catch up. “so bossy.”
“shut up or i’m leaving.”
inside the convenience store, the fluorescent lights buzzed faintly as you wandered through the aisles, scanning the shelves. rin walked ahead, already making a beeline for the refrigerated section. without hesitation, he grabbed two onigiri, a bottle of water, and a canned coffee before turning back to you, watching as you deliberated over your choices.
he let you pick whatever you wanted, but the moment you reached for a random snack, he scoffed. “seriously? that’s what you’re getting?”
you shot him an unimpressed look. “what’s wrong with it?”
“it’s disgusting,” he said flatly, swapping it out for something better and tossing it into your hands.
you huffed but didn’t argue, grabbing a bento box before heading to the counter. before you could even pull out your wallet, rin stepped forward, tossing the cash onto the counter without a word.
you blinked. “wait, you didn’t have to—”
“just take it,” he muttered, grabbing the bag and walking out without waiting for a response.
outside, the cool night air wrapped around you as you both settled onto a bench under the glow of the store’s fluorescent lights. the city hummed softly in the background, but between the two of you, there was only the quiet rustling of wrappers and the occasional clink of chopsticks against plastic.
rin sipped his canned coffee, gaze fixed on the street ahead. his usual scowl had faded into something more relaxed, but the silence between you held an edge like there was something left unsaid.
“you really dated him for a year?” his voice broke the quiet, flat and unimpressed.
you blinked, caught off guard. “what, are you keeping tabs on me now?”
he scoffed softly. “hard not to notice when i’d see you both everywhere.” his grip on the can tightened slightly. “didn’t think he was your type.”
you frowned, tearing open another snack. “and what’s that supposed to mean?”
rin didn’t answer right away, leaning back against the bench. “nothing,” he muttered but the word hung heavy between you, dripping with judgment.
a sigh slipped from your lips. “it wasn’t all bad, you know. at first, he was… nice, yeah.” you hesitated. “but i guess you’d find that hard to believe.”
“i do,” rin said bluntly. “so, what happened?”
you toyed with the edge of the wrapper, the memory still sour. “he didn’t take anything seriously, especially me.” a humorless laugh escaped you. “i guess i was just another game to him in the end.”
rin stayed silent for a long moment. “sounds about right.”
his indifference stung more than you wanted to admit. “you really hate him, don’t you?”
“i don’t care enough to hate him,” rin said coolly. “but if he thinks he can mess with you again, he’s an idiot.”
your chest tightened at his words at how casually he said them, like it was just a fact. not concern. not jealousy. just rin being rin.
“relax, tiger” you muttered, trying to play off the sudden warmth creeping up your neck. “it’s not like i’d go back to him.”
“good,” rin said, as if there was never another option and just like that, the conversation ended, leaving you wondering if he cared more than he was willing to let on.
maybe it was the exhaustion from the long day, or maybe it was the quiet comfort of sitting beside him again, but before you knew it, your eyelids started feeling heavy. you tried to fight it, blinking hard to stay awake, but the warmth from your full stomach and the steady presence beside you made it impossible.
your head dipped forward before you could stop it, landing against rin’s shoulder.
he stiffened. “oi.”
you hummed sleepily but didn’t move.
he clicked his tongue, clearly annoyed, but he didn’t shove you off. instead, he let out a slow exhale, shifting just the slightest bit to get more comfortable.
“tch. you’re such a pain,” he muttered under his breath but his voice lacked its usual bite.
and even though he wouldn’t admit it, rin stayed still, letting you rest against him, his shoulder barely moving as he watched over you in silence.
just as sleep began to pull you under, you heard him murmur something, too soft to catch clearly.
“stupid girl,” he muttered, flicking your forehead lightly. “first, you made everyone think you had a crush on sae. then you dated the most annoying jock in school. what am i supposed to do with you?”
and the next thing you knew, your legs were lifted off the ground and moving. your body shifted with each step, the steady rhythm of footsteps against pavement grounding you. a faint warmth pressed against your back, firm and familiar, and as your eyes fluttered open, you realised, you were on rin’s back. taking in the way his arms hooked under your legs, the slight flex of his shoulders as he carried you effortlessly down the quiet street. his head was turned slightly away, his usual indifferent expression still intact, but there was a tightness in his jaw that you could tell meant he was annoyed.
your lips curled into a sleepy smirk. "wow, rin," you drawled, voice still groggy. "didn’t think you were this soft."
rin didn’t stop walking, but you felt his grip on your legs tighten slightly. "you wouldn’t wake up no matter how many times i asked you to, so shut up."
you hummed, resting your chin against his shoulder. "no but seriously. carrying me home? how romantic."
"do you want me to drop you?"
you barely had time to laugh before rin actually crouched down and then let you go.
with a yelp, you tumbled off his back, landing ungracefully onto the pavement. "ow! rin, you—!"
he dusted his hands off like he just got rid of something troublesome. "told you to shut up."
you glared up at him, rubbing your arm with an exaggerated pout. "you’re the worst."
"then walk yourself home."
still grumbling, you got to your feet and brushed yourself off but even as rin shoved his hands into his pockets and continued walking ahead, you caught the briefest glance he threw back at you checking to make sure you were following.
and despite everything, you smiled. maybe you’ll be the one who breaks down rin itoshi’s iron walls.
