It's this blog's 8 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳 - 8 years since I first needed a blog for the fic writers' retreat.
8 years since 2016, when the first retreat was held in a tiny guest house on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay. 7 people! All strangers, all taking a massive risk...first in sending me, a rando from Tumblr, a few hundred dollars, and then in showing up with all their anxieties and deciding to make it all work.
It did. And it's still working.
@missdaviswrites @nautilicious @daringlydomestic @shamelessmash @aquabelacqua @addictedstilltheaddict @blogstandbygo thank you for making that first year amazing.
And thank you to so many others for doing the same in 2017, 2018, 2019...(skip 2020, skip 2021)...2022, and 2023!! And to all those who are gearing up to make 2024's retreat just as magical.

I've just reviewed Spark – How Fanfiction and Fandom Can Set Your Creativity on Fire, edited by Atlin Merrick - a terrific book of joyful essays about fandom/fan works and how positive it is for self-discovery, positive mental health, skills development, etc. It has contributions/quotes from many well known fans, pro writers & academics.
It also has lots of brilliant tips for writers of any persuasion!

2024 Fic Writers' Retreat - Information coming soon!
This year's retreat will take place from August 8th-11th!
We're trying a more cottage/chalet based approach this year, rather than college/conference center.
Exact location and pricing TBA, but it will be within an hour or two's drive from Toronto, and we will match or improve on last year's cost of CAD $450 per person. (Currently that is about USD$332.45)
This will include the cost of food, but food prep and cleanup will be shared.
This is just the preliminary don't-forget-it's-happening post. We always welcome first-timers so don't hesitate to get in touch. I would love to hear from anyone who's thinking of coming, to help me estimate numbers. I am @hubblegleeflower , for those who don't know, and I am deeply NOT intimidating. Hit me up with your questions!
Follow this blog and the tag "fic writers retreat" or "fic writers retreat 2024" for updates.

The Museum of Science in Boston has been raising funds to build a statue in memorial to Leonard Nimoy (who loved the museum and grew up right near it) and I’m SHOCKED at how far they still have to go. Leonard Nimoy was an activist, a proud Jew who inspired so many other Jewish people to be proud of their heritage, and a lover of science, art, and curiosity. If anyone deserves a statue in their honor at the museum he loved, it’s him.
The Museum of Science is a wonderful organization. They support local programs, they’re partnered with the New England Aquarium, they hand out free passes all the time (I got a bunch at the Dyke March last year), they tell the truth and strive to be diverse and accessible (they let people borrow wheelchairs and ECV’s for free!) and they run on community support. Please share their fundraiser!
I understand if it’s more important to you to share fundraisers for individuals in need. It is a very noble thing to do, and I think Leonard would agree. If you care about this though, everything is appreciated, and I know he has a lot of love on this website.
