12. A day at the beach, G, fiki, Same verse as an old fic of mine ‘let’s run away (don’t ever look back)’
It was Bofur's idea to go to the beach.
"We'll cook up a few burgers and get some bottles of scrumpy, it'll be grand!" he'd said. It hadn't taken much to convince the rest of them. With the recent spate of bright sunny weather, a day at the beach sounds like a fine idea indeed.
So, after a hasty trip around Tesco where they stock up on burgers, sausages, buns, and an assortment of ciders and beers, Bofur, Bilbo, and Kili pile into Bilbo's Nissan Micra and head for the beach,—the secret beach that only the locals and students know about. With most of the campus away for the summer it should be relatively quiet, if they're lucky they might even have it all to themselves.
Kili sits in the backseat texting furiously while Bofur and Bilbo bicker about the music in the front. Bilbo has the aux however Bofur is insisting that since he's riding shotgun he should be the one choosing their beach day playlist. Bilbo stands strong however, insisting that as it's his car, he gets to choose. This has devolved into a battle to the musical death where only the first few seconds of a song is played before it's skipped over to the next one.
Kili pays little attention to them, his eyes are fixed on his phone as his thumbs fly over the buttons. He'd asked Fili if he wanted to come that morning and Fili had said yes, but hasn't responded since and Kili's freaking out a little bit. But not wanting to bombard Fili with a string of increasingly anxious messages, he's harassing Ori instead.
We're coming, relax. Ori texts. He's probably the most formal texter Kili knows, no one else uses all the right punctuation. Fili's working morning shift but we'll be along soon. A pause and then Ori adds, Save me a burger. :)
Kili looks up when Deftones suddenly blasts through the speakers at full volume, only to be quickly replaced by Ed Sheeran which elicits a pained groan from Bofur.
"Anything but that, please, save me!" he cries.
"Why don't you just put it on random?" Kili suggests. The two front windows are wound right down creating a wind tunnel that's whipping Kili's hair into his eyes and he tucks it behind his ears a couple times before tying it back into a ponytail.
Bilbo and Bofur both turn briefly in their seats to shoot him equally disappointed looks.
"Random, Kili? Really?" Bilbo says and tuts as he hits the indicator to turn left down a quiet country lane. Bofur scoffs in disdainful agreement.
Kili sighs. At least the two of them can agree on one thing at least. Even if that thing is judging him.
As they get closer to the beach, they start to see sand lining the edges of the road and the bramble hedges give way to wide open dunes dotted with patches of sea grass. Kili breathes in deeply, smelling the fresh, salty air and he feels content. It's a beautiful long summer's day and he doesn't have to do anything beyond spend it with his best friends and at some point he'll get to see Fili which makes his stomach lurch with happy butterflies.

Drabble Challenge 9 is now officially open!
We are only playing Sat - Sun, so please come back on Tumblr to check it often. (From now on until Sun/Mon midnight whatever time you’re on)
RULES ARE THE SAME AS LAST TIME - PLEASE READ UNDER THE CUT:
STEP 1: Pick one of the following prompts:
Luprecalia
It's 3 a.m. but fuck it, we're being domestic.
Never have I ever...
The Consort and his King
Nectarines
"They will have to go through me."
Assembling IKEA furniture
Renting rooms from the locals
Valentines Day
“This isn’t going the way that I thought it would.”
Step 2: Write a quick response of at least 100 words (a classic drabble is 100 words, but whatever).
We won’t be counting, but the challenge here is to be concise, while having a clear link to the prompt you’re responding to. There is no upper limit, but remember the prompts get snatched pretty quick.
Fili/Kili or any fictional Dean/Aidan pairings, clearly mark your warnings etc.
Existing verses or brand new work are both fine.
Step 3: Refresh Tumblr and use the notes to check the last person that has reblogged this post with a response (IMPORTANT!)
Just ordinary reblogs to spread the word are ok (ignore those), but you’re looking specifically for the latest reblog that had a drabble added.
Step 4: Reblog from that person, adding your response. You also need to copy-paste the prompt list and REPLACE the one prompt you responded to with a brand new prompt (anything you like).
I.e. you claim one and you put one back. There are still 10 prompts.
Step 5: Format your post. Response text and updated prompts list MUST be hidden under the ‘Read more’ button.
Only 2 lines should be visible on the dashboard: 1) which prompt you’re claiming, pairing, rating, verse, possible warnings and 2) ‘Read more’.
Step 6: Tag your response: #Drabble Challenge 9 so that whoever wants to, can blacklist the whole event.
Next person:
Step 1: Find the latest reblog of this post with a response.
Step 2: Pick one of the prompts from the updated list (always find the latest reblog!)
Repeat Step 3, Step 4, Step 5, Step 6 etc. The list of prompts is forever evolving.
This event is meant to be snappy and fast, creating a caterpillar of reblogs, crawling all over your dashes.
How to resolve possible problems:
Two people writing responses at the same time for 2 different prompts from the same list. This is not a problem: So long as the second person responding finds the latest reblog, their prompt should still be available on the updated list. Only 1 prompt is replaced at a time.
Two people writing responses at the same time for the same prompt (AKA my prompt disappeared by now): Find the latest reblog, add your response and add your own prompt as number 11. From now on there are 11 prompts. However, this is meant to be snappy, so please don’t spend half a day writing 100 words…
Meanwhile, @linane-art will kick-start this, and provide the first example.
Have fun! Any questions - give us a shout. If it starts going wrong, there may be a mod reblog, setting it straight again.

11. Full Moon, britchell, T (references to past abuse, language)
The first time Mitchell meets Anders, it's a full moon and he’s stark bollock naked, hanging off the fire escape, knocking on his window with a shit-eating grin. Something about the way he's crouched there, the glow of the moon casting him in silver, makes him look half-feral, otherworldly.
“Hi, you don’t mind do you?” Anders says as Mitchell opens the window. He doesn’t wait for an answer, just slides inside like he does this sort of thing all the time.
“What are you doing?” Mitchell’s too stunned to be anything else. He’s seen Anders around the building, knows he lives on the floor above, but they’ve never spoken; and why he would show up out the blue, clinging to his window, completely naked is lost on Mitchell.
There’s a crash from above them, the sound of smashing glass and someone, a man, roaring furiously.
Anders rolls his eyes. “Had to make a hasty exit,” he says, standing in Mitchell’s kitchen, cupping himself in a half-hearted attempt at modesty. Another bang, more glass shattering. Anders winces. “That’ll be the mirror.”
“Do you want to call the police?”
“Nah,” Anders shakes his head. “He’ll get bored in a minute."
And that’s how Mitchell meets Anders.
He digs out a pair of sweatpants—much too big, riding scandalously low on Anders’ hips—and makes tea. They sit side by side, listening to the chaos above them, waiting for it to die down.
Anders never explains what happened that night, but Mitchell pieces it together. Anders brings people home, always different faces, always the same routine—drunk, sweaty, stinking of bars and bad decisions. They never stay long. After, Anders climbs down the fire escape, raps on Mitchell’s window like Poe’s raven, and slides inside.
Mitchell stops locking the window. Leaves it unlatched, an unspoken invitation. Anders never uses the front door.
One night, Mitchell asks why. “You know the stairs exist, right? I’ll give you a key if you really need one.”
Anders shrugs in that way that Mitchell knows means he’ll never change. “My neighbour’s a nosy cow. Always watching me through her keyhole. I like the idea that if she sees me coming home but never leaving, she’ll think there’s ten of me, just hiding away in my flat.”
Mitchell meets the neighbour once. Spots her ankles first through the banisters on the upper floor—bony, laddered pantyhose, pink slippers—then the sharp beady eyes peering over the railing. She clicks her tongue, lips pursed tight, and Mitchell knows she knows.
“I think your gig’s up,” he tells Anders when he slips in through his window that night.
Anders sighs and looks briefly disappointed before he shrugs and slides onto the couch next to Mitchell, pulling a blanket over the both of them. “Fun while it lasted.”
Nevertheless, Anders continues to use the window, and Mitchell continues to leave it unlatched.
Something happened to Anders. Mitchell doesn’t know what, only that it left marks. The way Anders gets lost sometimes, eyes unfocused, something dark pulling him under. The way he starts talking, then stops, words swallowed back like they were never meant to slip out. If Mitchell pushes, he shuts down completely. So Mitchell doesn’t push. He just lets it be.
Mitchell’s no stranger to damage. He’s got his own ghosts, a shoebox in the back of his cupboard filled with unsent letters, all saying goodbye, all unfinished because, when it comes down to it, who would even miss him?
Anders would, he thinks. Now, he has Anders. He doesn’t know what they are, or what Anders thinks of him, but it’s something. And before, he had nothing.
One night, Anders perches on the windowsill, feet dangling over the edge, cigarette between his fingers. “What was your ex like?”
Mitchell, hands in soapy dishwater, thinks about Annie. He’s mentioned her before, but never in detail. Until now, Anders never asked.
“Was she an asshole?”
“No.” Mitchell stares at his hands. “Quite the opposite.”
Annie was kind. Annie was gentle. Annie deserved better.
“She was a good person.”
“Was?” Anders exhales smoke, flicks ash into the street. “She dead?”
“Yes.” In a way.
"Shit." Anders stubs out his cigarette. “Sorry.”
“It’s ok."
Anders watches him for a moment, then unfolds himself from the windowsill and steps up behind Mitchell, standing on tiptoes to hook his chin over Mitchell’s shoulder.
“My ex was a shithead,” Anders says, jaw working against Mitchell's bones. Anders has never spoken about any kind of exes before, so Mitchell waits.
“I wasn’t a victim. Just didn’t realise what was happening at first. Then it was too late.”
“He hurt you?”
"Yeah." Anders hops onto the counter, swings his legs. His voice is casual, like he’s talking about the weather, but his eyes are hard. “People think they know what it’s like. It's not like in the movies. Not for me, anyway.”
His fingers absently rub a scar on his right arm. Long, silvered, raised.
“Did he do that to you?”
Anders glances down, like he forgot it was there. His fingers still. “Yeah. My little memento.”
Mitchell grips the plate in his hands, voice quiet. “If I met him, I’d kill him.”
Anders snorts. “No, you wouldn’t.”
“Try me.”
Anders studies him, then shrugs. “Doesn’t matter. He’s long gone. Relationships… too dangerous.”
Mitchell pulls the plug and lets the water drain away, then he shakes his hands and wipes them dry on a dirty dishcloth. “What about all those guys that come see you?” he asks.
Anders tilts his head, curious. “What about them?”
“You sleep with them.” It’s not a question.
Anders smirks. “Yeah.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s fun.”
Mitchell doesn’t respond right away. He dries his hands, tosses the dish towel aside. “And that’s it?”
“That’s it.” Anders slides off the counter, stretching like a cat. “I don’t do relationships.”
Mitchell nods, not sure what else to say.
Do the two of them fuck?
Mitchell thinks about it sometimes. He loves Anders. He’s sure of that now. Watches the stream of guys coming and going with something ugly curling in his chest. But he doesn’t say anything. He needs Anders too much to risk losing him.
It’s not healthy. But what is? Everyone’s broken. They’re nothing special.
Two lost guys who found each other.
And as long as it’s Mitchell’s window Anders crawls through at the end of the night, he can live with the rest.

2. It’s 3 a.m. but fuck it, we’re being domestic. Gen, Britchell
Mitchell wakes to the sound of cabinets banging in the other room and a string of mumbled curses.
For a brief moment, he considers ignoring it and going back to sleep. He’s long perfected the art of pretending Anders doesn’t exist when it’s convenient. But eventually, curiosity wins out.
Dragging himself out of bed, he pads barefoot into the living area to find Anders standing over a mixing bowl, flour dusting his shirt and an egg poised over the rim of the bowl.
“…What the hell are you doing?” Mitchell rasps, voice still thick with sleep.
Anders doesn’t even look up. “Pancakes.”
Mitchell blinks. “It’s three in the morning.”
“Yeah, but fuck it, we're being domestic.”
There's a part of him that wants to say something scathing, something to remind Anders that this isn’t them, that they don’t do soft things like standing in their too-small kitchen making pancakes in the middle of the night.
But then Anders glances over at him and his hair is a mess, and there are dark shadows under his eyes and Mitchell remembers then that Anders had been out at a family 'thing' and it all begins to make a bit more sense.
So he stays quiet. He leans against the doorway with his arms folded and he watches as Anders finally cracks the egg, a little too hard, and shell crumbles into the bowl. Anders curses and starts trying to fish it out with a spoon and Mitchell can see that his hands are shaking.
Mitchell sighs and steps forward. “Move over," he says gently, nudging Anders aside. Pancakes at three in the morning it is, then.

5. Nectarines Fiki, Gen, same verse as Brine
One day when Kíli comes to visit he's carrying a net bag filled with nectarines.
"I got them from the farm at the top of the hill," he says with a wide smile. "You know, the one with that old collie dog with three legs.
As Kíli perches on the stool holding the front door ajar to let in the late spring air, Bryn trots over and shoves her nose into the bag, then snorts, unimpressed, deeming the contents of no interest to her. She settles instead for nosing at Kíli's hands while he unties his laces until Kíli relents with a chuckle and gives her a good old scratch behind the ears.
Fíli, sitting at the kitchen table darning a pair of woolen socks, watches from the corner of his eye as Kíli sets the bag on the counter. With practiced familiarity, Kíli moves around the kitchen, retrieving a chopping board and sharp knife.
The first slice breaks through the red skin, revealing bright yellow flesh beneath. Soon, the air is filled with the mouthwatering scent of fresh nectarines. Kíli cuts one half into neat segments, pops a piece into his mouth, and groans theatrically.
"God these are good."
Fíli glances up just in time to see a droplet of juice slip down Kíli’s chin before he catches it with his finger, licking it away without a second thought.
"Here, try one. Best nectarines I’ve had."
Kíli holds out a segment. Fíli hesitates, then leans in, allowing Kíli to feed him. The flesh is sweet and tender, bursting with flavour as it slides down his throat. He’s instantly transported back to childhood; to warm afternoons on the front steps, sticky fingers, juice trickling down his chin, and a small wooden box under his bed where he kept the stones like treasures.
When Fíli opens his eyes Kíli is watching him, a gentle look in his eyes. Fíli lets out a quiet, bashful laugh, eyes dropping back to his half-darned sock.
"I love nectarines," he murmurs.
Kíli’s grin turns knowing. "Oh yeah. I think I remember you mentioning."
And Fíli knows, from the glint in his eye, that Kíli absolutely remembers the one time he must have mentioned it in passing, and that there's nothing coincidental about how he just happened to find a fresh bag of nectarines from the farm on the hill.

Going great so far lmao…
Ordered a mini mic to do speech to text because I keep writing in my notebook and having zero desire to transcribe it. Also talking into a dictaphone is realising a childhood dream of mine. Going to have to do it while pacing distractedly like I’m three sleepless nights away from finally cracking that cold case.

Haha, it may go disastrously, my only other time trying it was transcribing interviews when writing up my dissertation which led to some… interesting interpretations. 💀 I’m hoping that sitting in a quiet room and reading my notes out loud will be a bit more successful. I’ll let you know how it goes!

I also debated running AUpocalypse, as it came high in the responses ranking, but in the end decided that we've had one more recently than the Kink Bingo. Potentially, the idea going forward would be to alternate between those two events year on year.
Finally, quick update on the GatheringFiKi Community (I asked about it last year): I have tried to create such a community twice so far. Each time I'm getting 'awaiting approval' stage and then it gets no further. If I do manage to create it at some point, you can all expect invites into the Community and you're more than welcome to request one too. No idea how we'd use it yet.
Hope this helps! Stay tuned for further details in due course :)

The following ficlet was written by @marigoldvance based on this photoset.
Fili/Kili, G.
You might also be able to read this story on AO3.
If you’ve enjoyed this story, please leave a comment either in replies or on AO3.
The snowy mountains of Gondor passed outside the window as the train rumbled through small towns and villages, all decked out for Yulemas. Sparkling lights and strings of fluffy garlands hung on the eaves of every platform the train pulled into.
Fili had been sitting quietly in the first-class carriage, his laptop open on the table, looking over a couple of remaining depositions when Kili had called. As soon as Fili had accepted the call, Kili’s troubled face had filled the screen, eyes narrowed, brows weighted. It hadn’t taken more than two words before Fili had mildly regretted answering.
                “He’s repainted.”
And now, there they were, Fili trying to ease Kili’s mind as Kili complained about the state of Erebor Hall.
“It’s all green.” Kili grumbled. “Everything.”
Amused, Fili asked, “Everything?”
“I’m not kidding, Fee. Everything. Even our bedrooms. Green.”

12 Days of Christmas - 2024!
Hello,
We’re back with your favourite event of the festive season!
We would like to invite you to help us decorate our virtual fandom Christmas tree! With shiny, new, delicious content!
Bear with us, we’ll try to explain:
Fanart = Baubles
Fanfic = Paper chains
Photosets = Lights
This will make sense in a minute, we promise.
I would like to participate as a writer:
Step 1: Message @linane-art to request one of our festive photosets*. You can do so between now and 13th of December - no sign up needed.
Step 2: Write something based on the photoset. Minimum 700 words, no max, Fili/Kili or any fictional Dean/Aidan pairing. You’ve created a paper chain for our tree.
Step 3: Don’t post it, submit it to us.
Step 4: You can do this again (or as many times as you like), but you must submit one before requesting another.
You must submit at least some ficlets before 13th of December.
You will be offered a chance to continue writing after the 13th of December, but we want at least one complete wave of responses by then, so we can queue our content.
I would like to participate as an artist:
Step 1: Message @linane-art to request a bauble outline template.
Step 2: Within the bauble draw a little fanart. Photomanips are also allowed, but just edits or photosets won’t work for this. Must be Christmas or season-themed (no prompts, do what you like). Fili/Kili or any fictional Dean/Aidan pairing.
Step 3: Don’t post it, submit it to us.
Step 4: You can do this again (or as many times as you like), but you must submit one before producing another.
You must submit at least some fanarts before 13th of December.
You will be offered a chance to continue drawing after the 13th of December, but we want at least one complete wave of responses by then, so we can queue our content.
Decorating the tree:
Between 13th and 24th of December @gatheringfiki will be posting all your creations (decorations)
We will also re-use some of last year’s decorations: a selection of our favourite photosets from last year will be reblogged between 1st and 12th of December to whet your appetie.
Questions, feedback, ideas, comments - please let us know!
~gatheringfiki
*We have 10 photosets ready at this point, the rest is still cooking.
Please re-blog to spread the word! Thank you.

just a heads up, i’m planning on rebooting ‘the raptor house’ some time soonish. i’ve made a (somewhat tentative) resolution to finish my stories or at least have a good chunk of them done by the end of this year. i still love raptor house but in the time that’s passed since i started it, there’s a lot of things i want to change about it. the bare bones of it will still be the same, the general essence of the story and the characters and the basic direction but i want to change certain details i’m not happy about. this means i’m going to be taking the story down some time soonish, but i also want to let everyone know that it will be returning again newer and hopefully improved. of course none of this will happen until after i’ve finished ‘timeless’ but i just wanted to give people a heads up if it suddenly disappears in the next few weeks.

Timeless Chapter 3
sooooo a new chapter happened.
i doubt anyone remembers it considering it’s been 2 years
so here is the summary: ‘In a world where Timers exist, counting down the days until you meet your soulmate… it figures that Dean’s Timer would be faulty and has stayed blank since he had it installed on his sixteenth birthday. A story on learning when to love and when to just let it go. (AU based on the film Timer)’

Hi! I saw on your personal blog that you like What We Do In The Shadows? Have you ever thought about writing for that? If not do you know if there is a tumblr or lj for WWDITS or Flight of the Conchords? Thank you! Keep on writing! I love your stuff <3
i do love wwdits!!! :) i’d never thought of writing for it before but now that you mention it i think that could be a lot of fun, maybe one day i will. as for knowing of any good places, i wish i did but both are so low on the fandom radar. i’ve never read any fic for wwdits and i haven’t seen any fotc fic in years. it’s a shame, they’re both such great worlds with fantastic characters and imagine the aus.
have you read any good ones that you could rec?
also thank you very much! i’ve been struggling with inspiration and enthusiasm for a long time now but i keep hoping to get past it and messages like this are always lovely. :) <3

Can I ask when you'll finish the Raptor House? I'm a huge fan of this story but also I'm little bit disappointed you suddenly stopped writting it. It's such a mysterious and thriling story, please finish it soon. Thanks xx
Hey! I know I'm really sorry, my life's kind of taken a drastic change I got a job on a cruise ship which is great but I have literally no time to write anything I work 7 days a week and crazy long hours which leaves very little down time. It will be written though, at some point.
