this is just such a beautifully tragic example of a character both understanding what kind of story he is in and yet in denial, raging against the constraints of the story he is in. he has one role to play, one decision that will alter the course of the narrative and until then he is like a ghost, unheard and unheeded, pleading uselessly with both the hero and the story itself: i love you why couldn’t you have stayed a man i love you why couldn’t you have been a carpenter instead i love you why did you have to embrace this role of messiah i love you why do you have to die (and in doing so lead me to play my role in your death). anyway same energy as this christa wolf excerpt:

jesus christ superstar is about leftist infighting and hating your best friend and loving people wrong and the myopia of fame and inevitability and understanding that you were the cog that might not have turned and how love will not save the world because it is not enough and how people are fickle and how leaders are cowards and how the buck has to stop somewhere and how love doesn't stop just because it's useless or bad and saying 'i told you so' and how good will can never trump The Plan and how together we are so very strong and how God is not going to save us and how the story is incomplete because we have to finish it ourselves

I love that Jesus Christ Superstar ends at the crucifixion instead going through the whole resurrection. It's the perfect ending for their portrayal of an extremely human Jesus. It's like it's saying that whether or not the resurrection happened doesn't matter, not this time. We know that's the most vital part of every other telling, but this time we're talking about Jesus the man. And if anything crawled out of that cage, it was no longer a man. Whatever happened next, this is where this man, as he knew himself, ended. And so that is where we leave you.
