Exemptions granted to you are not shown on the admit card. Please go through the relevant statement of marks of the exam, where in your opinion, you were granted an exemption in a paper(s).
Alphabet “E” printed against the marks of a paper denotes that marks of that paper have been brought forward from an exemption granted in that paper in an earlier attempt.
So also, “#” symbol printed against the marks of a paper denotes that you have been granted an exemption in that paper, which will be valid for the next three following exams. Also the result below that Group shows “F-EX”
If no such symbol or alphabet is printed against the marks of any paper, even though the marks obtained in that paper may be more than 60, then that indicates that no exemption has been granted in that paper.
You can log in with your single sign on credentials at http://icaiexam.icai.org after 15th April for May cycle exams & 15th October for November Cycle exams to check your exemptions.
Candidates are advised to go through the rules relating to “Exemption in a paper(s)” contained in the Guidance Notes hosted along with the Examination form, CA Regulations 1988 and the announcement dated 09-01-2018 hosted on the institute’s website www.icai.org and be clear about their exemption entitlements and not miss out on appearing in those paper/s where they are not eligible for exemption. Analysis of case (1) and case (2)
Increase in income Rs. 20,000 Liability for surcharge increased Rs. 1,31,550
To provide relaxation from levy of surcharge to a taxpayer where the total income exceeds marginally above Rs. 50 lakh or Rs. 1 crore, the concept of marginal relief is designed.
Condition: Total income exceeds Rs. 50,00,000 (or Rs. 1 crore)
Relief: Marginal relief is provided to ensure that the additional income tax payable including surcharge on excess of income over Rs. 50,00,000 or Rs. 1,00,00,000 is limited to the amount by which the income is more than Rs. 50,00,000 or Rs. 1,00,00,000
Marginal relief = Calculated Surcharge – 70%(Income – Rs.50,00,000)] (if positive)
Or
Marginal relief = [(Income tax + surcharge) on income] – [(Income tax on Rs. 50,00,000) + (Income – Rs. 50,00,000)]
Similar relief shall also be provided where income exceeds marginally above ` 1 crore. In that case, the aforesaid equation shall be changed accordingly.
Now, computation of tax liability is made after considering marginal relief:
Particulars Working Case 1 (Rs) Case 2 (Rs) Case 3 (Rs) Liability [A] 13,09,500 13,15,500 16,12,500 Add: Surcharge B = [10% of (A)] Nil 1,31,550 1,61,250 Tax and surcharge 13,09,500 13,09,500 17,73,750 Less: Marginal relief [(B)–70%(50,10,000–50,00,000)] Nil 1,24,550 Nil Effective Surcharge [C] Nil 7,000 1,61,250 Liability after surcharge [A + C] 13,09,500 13,22,500 17,73,750 Add: Health & Education cess 4% of above 52,380 52,900 70,950 Total Rounded off u/s 288B 13,61,880 13,75,400 18,44,700
Taxpoint: The concept of marginal relief is not applicable in case of cess.

Steps to Computation of Total Income of a Person 2018-19 | Explained with Examples
New Post has been published on https://finultimates.com/steps-to-computation-of-total-income/
Steps to Computation of Total Income of a Person 2018-19 | Explained with Examples
Levy of Income Tax in India
Income-tax is a tax levied on the total income of the previous year of every person (Section 4).
A person includes an individual, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Association of Persons (AOP), Body of Individuals (BOI), a firm, a company etc.
Total Income and Types of Taxable Income of a Person
Income-tax is levied on an assessee’s total income. Such total income has to be computed as per the provisions contained in the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Let us go step by step to understand the procedure for computation of total income of an individual for the purpose of levy of income-tax –
Steps to Computation of Total Income of a Person 2018-19
Step 1 – Determination of residential status
The residential status of a person has to be determined to ascertain which income is to be included in computing the total income.
The residential status as per the Income Tax Act, 1961 can be classified as under –
CHART
In the case of an individual, the duration for which he is present in India determines his residential status. Based on the time spent by him, he may be (a) resident and ordinarily resident, (b) resident but not ordinarily resident, or (c) non-resident.
The residential status of a person determines the taxability of the income. For e.g., income earned and received outside India will not be taxable in the hands of a nonresident but will be taxable in case of a resident and ordinarily resident.
Step 2 – Classification of income under different heads
Check – 5 Heads Of Income In India Under Income Tax Act 1961 – All Types Of Taxable Income Explained
The Act prescribes five heads of income. These are shown below –
There is a charging section under each head of income which defines the scope of income chargeable under that head. These heads of income exhaust all possible types of income that can accrue to or be received by the tax payer. Accordingly, the income is classified as follows:
Salary, pension earned is taxable under the head “Salaries”.
Rental income is taxable under the head “Income from house property”.
Income derived from carrying on any business or profession is taxable under the head “Profits and gains from business or profession”.
Profit from sale of a capital asset (like land) is taxable under the head “Capital Gains”.
The fifth head of income is the residuary head. The income which is not taxable under the first four heads will be taxed under the head “Income from other sources”.
The tax payer has to classify the income earned under the relevant head of income.
Step 3– Computation of income under each head
Income is to be computed in accordance with the provisions governing a particular head of income.
Exemptions: There are certain incomes which are wholly exempt from income-tax e.g. agricultural income. These incomes have to be excluded and will not form part of Gross Total Income.
Also, some incomes are partially exempt from income-tax e.g. House Rent Allowance, Education Allowance. These incomes are excluded only to the extent of the limits specified in the Act. The balance income over and above the prescribed exemption limits would enter computation of total income and have to be classified under the relevant head of income.
Deductions: There are deductions and allowances prescribed under each head of income. For example, while calculating income from house property, municipal taxes and interest on loan are allowed as deduction. Similarly, deductions and allowances are prescribed under other heads of income. These deductions etc. have to be considered before arriving at the net income chargeable under each head.
Step 4 – Clubbing of income of spouse, minor child etc.
In case of individuals, income-tax is levied on a slab system on the total income. The tax system is progressive i.e., as the income increases, the applicable rate of tax increases. Some taxpayers in the higher income bracket have a tendency to divert some portion of their income to their spouse, minor child etc. to minimize their tax burden.
In order to prevent such tax avoidance, clubbing provisions have been incorporated in the Act, under which income arising to certain persons (like spouse, minor child etc.) have to be included in the income of the person who has diverted his income for the purpose of computing tax liability.
Step 5 – Set-off or carry forward and set-off of losses
An assessee may have different sources of income under the same head of income. He may have profit from one source and loss from the other. For instance, an assessee may have profit from his textile business and loss from his printing business. This loss can be set-off against the profits of textile business to arrive at the net income chargeable under the head “Profits and gains of business or profession”.
Similarly, an assessee can have loss under one head of income, say, Income from house property and profits under another heads of income, say, profits and gains of business or profession. There are provisions in the Income-tax Act, 1961 for allowing inter-head adjustment in certain cases.
However, there are also restrictions in certain cases, like business loss is not allowed to be set-off against salary income. Further, losses which cannot be set-off in the current year due to inadequacy of eligible profits can be carried forward for set-off in the subsequent years as per the provisions contained in the Act. Generally, brought forward losses under a particular head cannot be set-off against income under another head i.e., brought forward business loss cannot be set-off against income from house property of the current year.
Step 6 – Computation of Gross Total Income
The final figures of income or loss under each head of income, after allowing the deductions, allowances and other adjustments, are then aggregated, after giving effect to the provisions for clubbing of income and set-off and carry forward of losses, to arrive at the gross total income.

5 Heads of Income in India under Income Tax Act 1961 - All Types of Taxable Income Explained
Heads of Income in India under Income Tax Act 1961 explained here.
Levy of Income Tax in India
Income-tax is a tax levied on the total income of the previous year of every person (Section 4).
A person includes an individual, Association of Persons (AOP), Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Body of Individuals (BOI), a company, a firm etc.
Total Income and Types of Taxable Income of a Person
Income-tax is levied on an assessee’s total income. Such total income has to be computed as per the provisions contained in the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Earlier we’ve explained the steps to computation of Total Income Tax in India under the Income Tax Act 1961. Check steps to computation of total income of an individual for the purpose of levy of income-tax –

Heads of Income in India under Income Tax Act 1961
According to Sec.14 of the Income Tax Act 1961, all income of a person shall be classified under the following five heads:
Heads of income and computation of total income under various heads
Salaries
Income from House Property
Profis and Gains of Business or Profession (excluding 42 to 44DB but including sections 43A, 43B, 43AA, 44AB, 44AD, 44ADA and 44AE)
Capital Gains
Income from Other Sources
Classification of income under different heads
There is a charging section under each head of income in the Act which defines the scope of income chargeable under that head. These heads of income exhaust all possible types of income that can accrue to or be received by the tax payer. Accordingly, the income is classified as following Heads:
Salary, pension earned is taxable under the head “Salaries”.
House Rental income is taxable under the head “Income from house property”.
Income derived from carrying on any business/self employed or profession is taxable under the head “Profits and gains from business or profession”.
Profit from sale of a capital asset (like land) is taxable under the head “Capital Gains”.
The 5th head of income is the residuary head. The income which is not taxable under the first four heads will be taxed under the head “Income from other sources”.
The tax payer has to classify the income earned under the relevant head of income.
Income from other sources
Income is to be computed in accordance with the provisions governing a particular head of income. For computation of income, all taxable income should fall under any of the five heads of income as mentioned above.
If any type of income does not become part of any one of the above mentioned first four heads, it should be part of the 5th head, i.e. Income from other sources, which may be termed as the residual head.
Significance of heads of income
Income chargeable under a particular head cannot be charged under any other head.
The Act has self-content provisions in respect of each head of income.
If any income is charged under a wrong head of income, the assessee may lost the benefit of deduction available to him under the correct head.
These incomes are excluded only to the extent of the limits specified in the Income Tax Act. The balance income over and above the prescribed exemption limits would enter computation of total income and have to be classified under the relevant head of income.
Allowances & Deductions: There are allowances  and deductions prescribed under each head of income.
For example, while calculating income from house property, municipal taxes and interest on loan are allowed as deduction.
Similarly, deductions and allowances are prescribed under other heads of income. These deductions have to be considered before arriving at the net income chargeable under each head.

Candidates who wish to change their answer, can correct the answers on the OMR answer sheet, by erasing the earlier answer completely and choosing a new answer. Candidates are advised to carry HB pencils and erasers to the exam hall. No exchange of pencils or erasers will be permitted in the exam hall. Any attempt to exchange pencils or erasers in the exam hall during the exam will be deemed to be an act of “Unfair Means” and will be dealt with accordingly.
Candidates should write the details sought on the OMR answer sheet, in the boxes provided thereon, in black ink pen and darken the circles thereunder in HB pencils, carefully. In case of any error in writing the details, the OMR answer sheet will not be replaced. They should bring it to the notice of the invigilator who will do the needful.
Candidates are advised not to mark answers in respect of the MCQs in the answer book meant for descriptive type answer book or in the MCQ booklet. Such answers written in the descriptive answer book or in the MCQ booklets will not be evaluated.
No mark will be awarded, in case no circle is darkened or more than one circle is darkened in respect of a particular question in the OMR answer sheet.
Other Changes in New CA Exam Structure May 2019
In Paper 4 and Paper 7 of CA Intermediate Level exam, the practice of Sections A and B will continue. However, in the composite paper, OMR answer sheet will be only one for both the Sections. Candidates will be required to answer the MCQs of Section A and Section B in the same OMR answer sheet. However, the descriptive component of the question papers will have to be answered in their respective designated answer books marked A and B.
There is no segregation of timing within the 3 hours duration, separately for answering descriptive type questions and objective type questions. Candidates will be free to use the time as per their convenience.
Reading time of 15 minutes will continue to be allowed in the composite papers, as in other papers.
Both the question papers will be provided to the candidates at 1.45 PM(IST), i.e. 15 minutes before the commencement of the exam.
Both the answer books will be provided to the candidates at 2.00 PM.(IST) in the normal course.
Candidates will be required to remove the roll number sticker ( containing the roll number in bar coded format) available on the attendance register against his/her name and affix the same at the designated place on the cover page of the descriptive type answer book.
There is no requirement for affixing the roll number bar code sticker on the OMR answer sheet.
Candidates are advised not to staple or tag the OMR answer sheet with the descriptive type answer book. Further, they are advised not to keep the OMR answer sheet inside the MCQ booklet while submitting the same. MCQ booklet, OMR answer sheet and the descriptive type answer book are to be submitted to the invigilator separately.
The Invigilator will sign and hand over the acknowledgement on Page 2 of the admit card to the candidate, for having received each of the answer books, in separate columns on the reverse of the admit card, upon receipt of the OMR answer sheet and the descriptive answer book after the conclusion of the exam.
Physically handicapped candidates will be given extra time as per the existing arrangements, in the normal course, as per the guidelines in place.
In the case of Hindi medium candidates, Papers 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 of Intermediate Level (Both Old and New Syllabus), including the MCQ component will be bilingual. In other papers of the Intermediate level exam, question papers will be in English only for all candidates including Hindi medium candidates.
