Drawn By Numbers – A fundraising event in support of the Emily Cares Student Emergency Fund Hosted by the Emily Carr University Foundation, Drawn By Numbers seeks to bring attention to, and draw support for, the Emily Cares Student Emergency Fund. This inaugural event aims to connect artists and art collectors through a fun-filled evening hosted by comedic, singing and drag sensation, Amy Grindhouse, with grooves by DJ G-Luve, a silent auction and more! Join us for a fundraiser with a twist – each level 1 ticket holder takes home a limited-edition 8 x 10 art print created by one of 20 alumni. The catch? Your ticket goes into the barrel and once your name is drawn, you select your work from the wall of prints. The Emily Cares Student Emergency Fund aids students in achieving a university degree by addressing their urgent and unexpected financial challenges along with promoting wellness programs. Imagine you're a student who has to choose between buying food or paying rent. During the pandemic, many students became financially unstable overnight when their source of income was reduced or disappeared entirely. Donations to Emily Cares meant that in the early days of the pandemic, each of the 375 students requesting emergency support received an Emily Cares bursary, including a student faced who was faced with the additional trauma of a medical emergency. Since the pandemic, food and housing costs have continued to soar and food insecurity continues to be a struggle for many. According to the Statistics Canada Report: Food Insecurity and Mental Health During the Covid-19 Pandemic, university-aged Canadians (15-34 years) have increased food insecurity as a direct result of the financial impact of the pandemic. Food insecurity also goes hand in hand with moderate to severe anxiety which can be a significant challenge for students’ capacity to achieve a post-secondary education. Happy New Year! 🥳 2021 has been a hell of a ride. There was a lot of discovering, finding courage, hurting, healing, accepting, resting, learning, unlearning, getting out of my comfort/safe zone, and exploring. Even though it has not been easy, I’m still extremely grateful for all the events, the ups and downs, the learning opportunities and the uncomfortable moments, but most of all, I’m so grateful for my love ones that were there for me, that despite it’s hard on them to see me go thru pain, to lose sight, to forget to be caring, kind, giving, forgiving and loving towards them and myself, they stuck around. They, despite all that, still love me, still willing to stick with me, to believe that the better version of me is just asleep deep inside the cocoon of hurt and will awaken one day. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Here’s a wrap on my 2021: 1. Tried making art with shadows (chicken wires + light) 2. Had an artist talk at @opusartsupplies 3. Painted two paintings for my own home 4. Competed in an oil painting competition @surreyartgal @surreyartgalleryassociation 5. Had a group show at the @thebeaumontstudios 6. Got featured on @therichmondsentinel 7. Completed an outdoor 38’ tiger mural for @thompsontigers 8. Had an interview and featured news with @emilycarru @ecualumnirelations 9. Finally have a studio again (at @thegalleryqp)after an year 10. Discovered invisible ink as an drawing medium and made it into the soul of my solo show 11. Had a solo show at @thegalleryqp 12. Had an artist talk at The Outlet in Port Coquitlam 13. Completed an indoor landscape mural for @bakerandtablecafe 14. Completed multiple commission work I am grateful for all the love and support that I received in 2021, and the new connections that I made 💕 I’m looking forward to 2022, to push myself further as an artist, to become a better version of myself in every way. I am so grateful for all the support and love that I’ve received. It is such a blessing to have my solo show opening on my birthday and to be able to spend it with my love ones. “Bare” is an interactive solo art show that offers a unique and intimate experience by local Artist Fiona Tang. Tang invites viewers to discover hidden animals with the use of blacklight flashlights. The show reveals a glimpse into Tang’s mental struggles in the most bare form. “Bare” invites viewers to get close and experience the artwork. At first glance, the atmosphere of each drawing seems empty, and bare but the viewers are given the key - a blacklight flashlight, to unlock what’s hidden within each drawing. Through the use of blacklight flashlights, animals emerge from the dark. These hidden animals represent Tang’s mental health condition of feeling trapped with anxiety and depression in the past year. Tang has felt robbed, invisible, and silenced by her own mental health, and the struggles are buried beneath the surface. One that struggles with mental health may look physically healthy, but are unwell inside. Tang is often known for her large scale drawings of powerful and fierce animals such as tigers, however, this show takes a different approach where the fighting animals are caged in the depths of the drawings. Sneak peak of my upcoming solo show “Bare”. One of my most intimate shows yet. This show focuses on my battle with anxiety and depression in the past year, where I felt trapped, robbed, invisible and silenced by my own mental health, which is represented by the animals drew with invisible ink. Through the use of blacklight flashlights, the viewers are invited to come close to the drawings to unleash and discover the animals that are trapped within the artist. A metaphor for how my close ones had helped me reopened my heart and heal, by seeing me and staying close to me. If you are feeling the same, please know that you are not alone. After an year of being “homeless” (without a studio) and feeling trapped within a cage, this little tiger has finally found her new home. I’ve been posting on my stories about my mural at James Thompson Elementary but realized I have never posted it in my feeds! I’m incredibly grateful for being selected for the mural and all the connections and engagement with the teachers, students, City, and the principal. It’s been an uplifting journey so far and I cannot wait to show everyone the finished product. This is what my artistic process looks like: 1. Research, gather ideas from students about what the school motto is and what does “Thompson Tigers” mean to them. I discovered it meant “Thinking, Learning, Caring”. 2. With the motto in mind I drafted up the tigers that represents each word. 3. I then turned my sketches into digital work and worked on the colours. 4. Transferring the artwork onto the wall using sharpie, 5. Started painting on the wall. Here is what the mural looks like so far! I will also be adding grass and greenery and butterflies to it too.
