Yes I think about this a lot. I don’t mind when people tweak the personality of the nations bc well honestly Hima didn’t do the greatest job and it’s silly that people can take the concept of the hetalia characters and mold them into their own thing. But I would like to see more lighthearted russia more often too. Rugged 40 yo Ivan is certainly not the enemy but this squishy thing…

…makes for a lot of interesting interactions and that kind of tone is fun to play with. Also it’s a more passive aggressive nature than just straight up aggressive, which fits the Cold War era well. Just musings. Often I don’t like the characterization of ame either but that’s another story
will i please not get crucified if i say something as long as i preface it with the fact that i say it with a lot of love and am aware i myself might just also be guilty of something akin to it yada yada blah blah hypocrisy...
#I like when apollosoyuz are equals on the playing field#mr 40 yo stone Cold War vet is oft the one more in control#that’s ok i just like the tugging and pulling 😞#cold war enthusiasts problem#I don’t actually read fan fiction anymore#not bc i think there’s something wrong with it it just makes me feel jobless#like that’s on me. but it’s ok i read history textbooks and foreign relations articles instead of hetalia fic#scratches the same itch? perhaps

I can’t believe I wasn’t following you this whole time I’m embarrassed I check your account so frequently😭
Anyway I wanted to say I love how you characterize Russia especially because it illustrates how affectionate russian culture is like you can greet your loved ones with a kiss on the cheek or lips and then accompanied by a bear hug. so cute! The only thing I think the actual hetalia characterization got inaccurate was him smiling all the time bc the Slavic death stare is pretty notorious. but whatever he’s cutieful I love how soft and squishy he is.
No shade to other people’s characterization of course. There’s a lot of sides to a culture and it’s true that Russia can be cold and ruthless (very much so…) but all that can coexist. it’s just nice to also see something that isn’t angst about being incapable of love and all that. The more the merrier!
I also imagine he believes in those russian superstitions like if you get a cross breeze going in your house you will Die. And if ame got sick he would soak a strip of cotton in vodka (водочный компресс) and wrap it tightly around his neck (allegedly the burning sensation is healing). What am I talking about…
Well I love this dumbass ❤️ thank you for your lovely work portraying him

BWHEGSHS dw dw😭 a kalashninillion thankies augh augh... you hit me in the hyperfix, russia characterization is. intricate. im so happy when people like mine bc a lot of his traits coexist while completely contradicting eachother so he's very interesting to me. i like to hope that i don't change much of him...
i agree honestly, went to look for a post i made in a similar vein bc. some people's cold coolguy rus is so super likeable truly, But he's canonically an affectionate(ly intentioned) character to me... i think it ties into the smiling thing also! they're all connected. i like to think his progression was like. bullied kid who wanted friends -> The death stare TM intimidate everyone no one picks on you -> smiling idk how but let's just all be friends instead okay guys!! (guy whose loneliness has eaten him alive his whole life but honestly thinks everything will be okay someday. he is quite silly and lighthearted Usually. Awesome! Hooray!)

also true true i think superstitions and old timey cures and such would be at least subconsciously picked up by him. a few from ukraine while growing up (alcohol compressions, a lot of tea lore...) and a few others from belarus bc she fws the occult heavy and neurosis runs in the family like that.
ame takes benadryl for a common cold and mentions it can cause hallucinations. rus goes and stares in shock into a pot of tea until it boils over.
