downside: going to have to include a picture of the Giza pyramids in the slides for the lecture
upside: i get to give people a crash course in why perspective matters in two frames, because

Pathfinder 1E was great for a lot of reasons, most importantly in terms of how easy it made creating the specific character concept you had in mind (if there wasn’t an archetype, there was probably a prestige class). My biggest criticism of the system is that there was a “meta” build for most classes which inevitably meant you needed to read 20 different books for 5 different classes in order to maximize your armor class or your spell progression.
To OP’s point, it’s refreshing to see BG3 to essentially just be the Player’s Handbook stuff. Every time I open Kingmaker I spend more time in character creation and looking over my builds’ progression spreadsheet than actually playing the game.
we rag on D&D 5e a lot for justifiable reasons but i'm still glad i've played a lot of it because it makes Baldur's Gate 3 fully comprehensible to me. never was able to get into Divinity: Original Sin 2 because the combat system didn't click for me
