prayers are great but here are organisations you can support and donate to after the explosion in beirut, lebanon. as of right now august 4th 2020, 10 bodies have been recovered and hundreds are injured, and entire neighbourhoods including hospitals have been destroyed. we’re already in an economic crisis and famine on top of covid and our government, as usual, has done and is doing nothing to help us, much less the refugees. we still don’t know what or who set off the explosion. we have 1.5 million syrian refugees and 300k palestinian refugees who also need help.
- save the children lebanon
- muslim aid lebanon
- bassma: donations go to help families pay for health care, food boxes, clothing, education and tutoring
- anera: donate to syrian and palestinian refugee camps in lebanon
- lebanese food bank
- association najdeh for female palestinian refugees in lebanon
- lebanese red cross
- penny appeal lebanon, help buy food for children and families
- islamic relief usa / islamic relief canada
- basmeh and zeitooneh: learn about the social and economic crisis + donate here
- jusoor syria, refugee education program in lebanon
- help lebanon carrd with a few more ressources + overall petitions
if you know of any dependable and official charities/ngos in lebanon please reblog and i will add them onto this post as well.

I bought 4 plain old wildtype bristlenose babies in the beginning of August and they came in super skinny (first pic). All 4 are fat and happy and have doubled in size now. Babies

Eels are absolute gods among animals.
for example:

You’ve got your nice beautiful speckled eels

You have wiggly poke-their-little-heads-out-of-the-sand friends!

Look!!!! This one looks like a puppy!!!!

You even have friends with fearsome teeth!! (feat. shrimp)

And they look funny from the front!!!!
But do you want to know the supreme kings among eels?
Ribbon eels.
Let me demonstrate.

aaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

*screams multiply*

*blood curdling screams of the damned*

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
thank you for your time

I love rivers. all the lore and mythology about rivers is real. they’re all big and powerful and can kill people, and they are very judgmental. but they can also if they want just strip you of all wrongdoing. and that’s where salmon and frogs live

It's so frustrating seeing people who mean well, but just don't understand that zoos & aquariums aren't necessarily bad. Animals in facilities accredited by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums are better cared for than many human children. It may not be the savannah or the open ocean, but your dog doesn't live in a sprawling forest like wolves do, either. Does that mean your dog is being mistreated & should be released immediately? How well do you think it would survive on its own? Do you think it would be happier? On top of that, many zoos & aquariums do so much more than just house animals. Their research has immeasurably helped wild populations, & even when they don't have extensive educational programs (which many do), the staff, volunteers, & interpretive signs help the general public understand the animals they're looking at, from their habitat to their behavior to how smog or ocean acidification is hurting the species as a whole. This kind of awareness is what makes people care, & caring is the only way change can happen. Zoos & aquariums do so much for wild animals. Many of the bad things you've heard came from either the horrendous conditions of Victorian zoos (did they have aquariums?) or "documentaries" made by people who had a gut feeling & ran with it without consulting anyone actually in the industry. Those of us who know what goes on behind the scenes are out here, ready to explain how these places really work. Ask us. The more myths we debunk, the more we can focus on the care, research, & education that makes them so important.

SWIMMING HEADS: REDUX
hey everybody, welcome to the very first Wierd Biology Redux!
so you think you want to know more about the Ocean Sunfish, or Mola Mola(molamolamola), hmmm? can’t say I blame you. they are pretty great.
so without further ado, let’s bring this ship back around and learn a few more facts about these majestic idiots and their relatives!
there are actually three seperate species in the Mola genus, including our old friend the Ocean Sunfish. These are: *DRUMROLL*
Mola mola, the Ocean Sunfish (big ‘n lumpy)
Mola ramsayi, the Southern Sunfish (sleek n’ pretty)
and Mola tecta, the Hoodwinker Sunfish (big n’ full of secrets)
the Ocean Sunfish and Hoodwinker Sunfish are about the same size, reaching up to ten feet in length and weighing up to two tons (BIG boys, absolutely enormous, 10/10).
the Southern Sunfish is significantly slimmer and more obscure, though it also reaches lengths of around ten feet.
the Hoodwinker Sunfish was discovered only recently through genetic analysis. it is so named because it had been ‘hiding in plain sight’ for years, almost identical to the Southern Sunfish except for its size.
(I disagree, scientists are merely unobservent. look at those pictures. those fish look nothing alike. they probably don’t even speak the same language. but do scientists care? nnOOOoo.)
ANYWAY back on topic, here’s some videos of Molas swimming around like adorable morons. I love them.
youtube
youtube
and finally, we’ll close with a video that I really couldn’t figure out what to do with. look at it. who even does that? don’t do that.
youtube
(it’s funny as shit, though)
anyway I hope you enjoyed our brief return to Mola Molamolamola today.
rock on, Molas, rock on.

Even the American Fisheries Society is pissed off about this shutdown, and the only politics they get involved in are environmental policies that directly affect fish (which are all of them, tbh).
