Just saw a clip of this person start up with mentioning Sebastian Stan's new role as a gay man in one of his upcoming movies in regards to representation and giving straight white men queer roles. And while I fully agree that this is a conversation to be had but in this case the situation is much more nuanced than simply a straight man playing a queer role. I do not think this is a conversation you can have whilst omitting the fact the Sebastian Stan is a Romanian immigrant, as well as the current social, political and cultural aspect of where he is from.

You should take it not as a "straight man plays gay character" bur rather "Romanian man plays gay character" and the conversation surrounding this suddenly shifts. Apart from the xenophobia Romanians (and eastern Europeans) face in the west (making it very hard for us to assert ourselves because of our nationality), Romania is a highly conservative and homophobic country. Him playing a gay character, while being an internationally known actor, can have a positive impact on his home country, where,during our very recent elections, both presidential and parliamentary, far right parties and candidates fueled their campaigns with homophobia. A huge chunk of people online that voted for the conservative parties and fascists Calin Georgescu and George Simion outright said they're not voting for Elena Lasconi/Nicușor Dan because they want the gays off the streets and they were made to believe the far right's opposition was inclusive (spoiler alert both Elena Lasconi and Nicușor Dan are orthodox christian that stated they do not support gay marriage).

Sebastian Stan is very positively viewed by Romanian media at least, if not Romanians themselves; not a lot of us "make it" and if they make, their roots are oftentimes forgotten (Anastasia Soare, Alexandra Stan, Inna, hell even Stan Lee - his parents are Jewish Romanian immigrants).

To add another layer to the discussion Sebastian Stan publicly campaigned for Nicușor Dan, and voted for him, in an environment where the opposition was saying that he'll "let the gays in the country" and that he'll "make men wear skirts".

Taking all that into consideration, imagine the type of good it can do for Romanian queers to see a very famous Romanian person openly play a gay character at Hollywood.
