Is a car just four wheels and an engine or do we look for more in our cars now ?
In this modern age, are peoples requirements of a car/vehicle different to that of 50 years ago ?
Times have changed but, in essence, a car or van is the same as it was 50 years ago, it’s still an engine with (usually) four wheels attached. However, now it’s become so much more. Some people would consider their car an extension of themselves, a mobile office, a way to impress people, a mobile music box, or a family transporter, to each and every individual a car has a different purpose and persona.
With the recent changes in technology the possibilities when it comes to add-ons to a vehicle is endless, be it Bluetooth connectivity which now ranks in the top things people look for in a car, to paddle shifting gears, heated seats or heated wing mirrors. there are now so many options to personalize a car to fit your needs that two cars are rarely the same anymore.
So what do people really want from a car?
There really is no one answer to this, but it may surprise some of you to know that it’s not what you’re thinking, the way a car looks makes up only 10% of a person’s decision when it comes to buying a car.
Reliability ranks as everyone's number one concern, no-one wants to be back and forth to the garage. In a world where we all lead busy lives, we just can’t afford the loss of time and the hassle this involves.
Second on peoples list is seat comfort, surprising yes but with the amount of time spent driving people have a need to be comfortable.
Third and final is the safety rating for Driver/Passenger, no-one wants to be driving a vehicle that is liable to detonate itself at any moment, or in a James Bond style eject you via the sun-roof every time you go over a speed bump.
I think it’s safe to say that in recent the last 50 years a car has stopped being a method of getting from point A to point B, and with it now being peoples second biggest financial outlay after their houses, I think it’s clear that people are now looking for a lot more in their car than just four wheels and an engine. Most people wouldn’t even entertain the possibility of driving a car without Electric windows or Power steering, it does pose the question of what’s the next invention we won’t be able to do without in our cars?
