The Wolves
Pairing: Mob Boss Azriel x Secretary Reader
Summary: As requested, the sequel to To Love a Beast! Reader and Azriel are figuring out how to navigate their new lives together, but disaster strikes when the wrong person finds out about them being together.
Warnings: light smut, kidnapping (not graphic)
Word Count: 2.1k
Azriel let himself into your apartment as you were making dinner. He smirked at you, leaning down to kiss your cheek, and handing you a paper shopping bag with a mischievous glint in his eye.
“What’s this?” you laughed, setting down your wooden spoon and putting the cover on your pan of food on the stove.
“Open it,” he smiled, shrugging off his jacket and hanging it on the back of a chair.
He watched your face intently, his heart warming, his excitement growing as you reached into the bag and pulled out a pair of lacy black panties.
You grinned, your smile lighting up your whole face. “You really did get me new ones.”
“I owed you, several times over,” he said, wrapping his arms around your waist from behind. “There’s more in there, you know.”
You laughed as you pulled out several more, all different colors and styles. “You didn’t need to get me this much, Az!”
He shrugged, kissing down your neck, “I want to spoil you. Plus, this way, I won’t feel bad when I keep ripping them off you.”
You leaned into him, your head falling back against his chest. “You’re ridiculous,” you teased.
Az kissed your forehead and watched your nose crinkle as you smiled. Fuck, how had you turned him into such a softie?
His hands slid from your stomach down your sides suggestively.
“Dinner’s ready in a few minutes,” you scolded him gently.
“We can get a lot done in a few minutes,” Azriel murmured, his voice low, his lips brushing your ear.
You made that little noise from the back of your throat that meant you wanted him, and he was about to pick you up and settle you on the counter when your timer went off. You pulled away from him to turn it off and started dishing out pasta for the both of you.
Raising your eyebrow at him playfully, you handed him the plate and sat down at the table. He kissed you on the head again before he sat down across from you, “Thanks for dinner, babe.”
“Mmhmm,” you said happily around your fork.
He smiled as he watched you, his fingers itching to get back on you.
But then his phone rang.
You both groaned, and he watched your face fall as he fished his phone out of his pocket.
“Yeah?” he said in greeting.
“We need you out here, boss. We’ve gotten into a bit of a… situation.”
He rolled his eyes, his eyes softening in apology as he looked at you, who had so sweetly made dinner for him.
“On my way,” he said, and hung up, already moving towards you, kissing you. “I’m sorry,” he said to you.
“It’s okay. Just get back safe,” you said sadly, your eyes shining with love as you watched him go.
“Promise,” he said, shrugging back into his jacket.
And then he was gone.
---
You sighed, pushing the pasta around your plate in your silent apartment. Your heart hurt every time he left, every time he put himself in danger for the Family.
The two of you were still a secret, and you couldn’t help but be hurt by that. You loved him, you knew. It seemed like he loved you, too, but how could you be sure, when he was unwilling to tell anyone about you?
You understood, of course. It was dangerous, having a weakness. And you knew you certainly had become a weakness for Azriel.
He didn’t want anyone to be able to put you in danger for leverage against him, and you appreciated it, of course you did. But you hated having to hide your affection for him at work, sick of sneaking around all day and all night.
But, what could you do?
Anxiously, you waited for hours, finally tucking yourself into bed and waiting for Azriel to return.
---
It was completely dark by the time Azriel had cleaned up the situation and made his way back to you. He was exhausted, starving, and pissed that his evening with you had been ruined.
He let himself into your apartment, and his heart warmed when he saw you had left a plate out for him. He heated up the food and ate quickly before quietly going into your room, stripping down to his underwear, and sliding into bed beside you.
You let out a little noise as you woke up, molding your body against his, wrapping your arms around him. “Everything okay?”
“It is now,” he said quietly, brushing a strand of hair back from your face.
“You’re in one piece?” you asked, your voice laced with sleep.
“Pretty sure,” he teased.
Satisfied, you snuggled into him, and his hand slowly wandered down to squeeze your ass. He smirked when he realized you were wearing a pair of the new panties under your t-shirt.
You let out a quiet moan, leaning your head back to expose your neck to him.
Without wasting any time, he dipped his head, sensuously kissing your neck as your hand wandered down, cupping him outside of his boxers.
He had to bite back a groan. Nobody had ever affected him the way you do. He pulled your shirt up over your head, his mouth trailing down your chest, his teeth scraping your nipple playfully. You arched your back to get closer to him, and he couldn’t imagine being happier as the two of you moved together, reading each other’s bodies perfectly.
Azriel hoped he would always feel like this.
Azriel felt your eyes on him as he moved around the office, giving orders, sending people out to do the Family’s bidding.
When everyone else had gone, he sidled up behind you, gently massaging your shoulders and pressing a kiss to your cheek.
You leaned into his touch, but somewhat reluctantly. “Careful, you wouldn’t want anyone to see,” you said with a hint of sarcasm.
He pulled back, looking at you questioningly. “You okay?”
Shrugging your shoulders slightly and sitting up straighter so his hands would fall away, you nodded. “Yep.”
“Babe-”
“You should go,” you cut him off. “You have work to do.”
He rounded the desk to face you, resting his palms on the desk, leaning down to meet your eyes. “What’s going on?”
Sighing, you said, “I’m just sick of hiding us.”
He hadn’t even known this had been on your mind. “You know why we have to keep it a secret,” he said gently. “It’s dangerous, sweetheart. If anyone knew, you would immediately become a target. The wolves will come for you.”
“If your enemies knew,” you corrected. “You don’t trust your own men?”
“I don’t fully trust anyone but you,” he said truthfully. “Information can easily slip unintentionally, or be beaten out of people. You know that.”
Closing your eyes, you took a deep breath. He gently ran his thumb along your cheekbone. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I really am. But I won’t risk you.”
Your eyes were sad when you opened them, but you nodded bravely. “I know.”
His hand was still on your cheek when the door opened. He stood up abruptly and turned around to face it.
It was one of his men, of course, Jason, looking slightly surprised. Azriel smoothly took a step toward him. “What is it?”
Azriel barely heard his request for help, couldn’t see past the curious expression he wore when Azriel spun around. He had seen Azriel’s hand on your face, had seen how intimate the gesture was.
He knew.
Azriel didn’t leave Jason’s side that day. He was trying to decide if he should mention what he had seen, if he should try to explain himself. Or if he should just leave it alone.
Jason himself didn’t mention it.
It worried Azriel. Jason could be a bit of a wildcard. He was honestly the last person Azriel would choose to know about his feelings for you. But talking about it could make everything so much worse.
He cursed himself for being so careless, and hoped against hope that he was doing the right thing.
---
Days later, you anxiously waited for Azriel to show up at your apartment. He had been on edge ever since Jason had walked in on the two of you in the office. You honestly weren’t entirely convinced that he had even seen anything, but you knew that Azriel was extremely worried about it.
You checked your phone for the time. Azriel should have been here by now, but it wasn’t too unusual for him to get caught up in something before he could make it to you.
When the door opened, your heart leaped in excitement.
But it quickly fell into your stomach as you realized with a start that it wasn’t Azriel who had burst through your apartment.
---
Azriel was not having a good day. Due to Jason’s incompetence, he had been running around the city all day trying to prevent an even bigger mess.
He couldn’t wait to have a quiet night in with you and temporarily forget about all of his problems.
The hair on the back of his neck rose in trepidation as he stepped into your empty apartment. It wasn’t like you to be out when you knew he was coming over.
Within a few moments of entering, he spotted your purse on the kitchen counter, your phone on the couch, and knew that something was horribly wrong.
He had been in the business for a long time, had obviously been angry many times, but he had never felt rage and panic quite like this before.
Immediately, he was out the door, on the phone. He knew exactly what was happening. He knew exactly who was to blame.
“What the fuck did you do?” he barked over the phone.
Jason had the audacity to act confused, bumbling out a useless response that Azriel had no time for.
“She’s gone, do you understand?” Azriel shouted over him. “Who did you tell?”
Azriel’s hands were shaking, but he couldn’t stop them. As soon as Jason answered, he hung up, going as fast as his car would take him.
---
Your heart hammered in your ears, the cloth in your mouth silencing you was becoming uncomfortable, the zip ties holding your hands behind your back digging into your skin. Despite this, you tried to stay calm. You knew Azriel would be coming over tonight. He would come for you, you knew he would.
The timing though, you hoped he would get right.
Holding your head high, you were thankful that you didn’t have to wait long until Azriel burst through the door, his nostrils flared, the veins in his neck pulsing, his eyes flooding with relief as his eyes landed on you.
You shut your eyes as Azriel took down the man who had taken you.
It was really only a matter of moments before Azriel’s hands were gently pulling the cloth out of your mouth.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, his eyes raking your body, looking for any injuries.
You shook your head, finding yourself unable to speak, willing yourself to keep the tears at bay.
“Oh god I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice wavering as he gently cut the ties holding back your hands. “I’m so sorry.”
Again, you were shaking your head, willing him to understand that it wasn’t him, that you didn’t blame him for a second.
Quickly, he wrapped his arms around you and ushered you out of the building. You were thankful he was holding most of your weight, as you still felt numb.
You had never seen Azriel like that, had never seen him so full of fear. You hoped you would never see it again.
---
Azriel was thankful when your breathing had become deeper and you had finally fallen asleep in his arms.
It had taken a long time for you to settle down, for your body to stop shaking.
He was so thankful that he had gotten to you in time, that nothing worse had happened. He would deal with Jason in the morning, but for now, he was glad that he had you here with him, that you were safe.
For now, it would have to be enough.

AHHH THIS WARMED MY HEART SO MUCH, THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU RIGHT BACK 🫶🏻🩷🫶🏻🩷🫶🏻
The Sweetest Con
Pairing: Modern! Rhysand x Reader
Summary: You and Rhys are rival lawyers, but when a case stumps him, you find yourself in a situation you never thought you would be in.
Based on this request! 🩷
Warnings: Sorry to any lawyers out there, I do not know what I’m talking about lol.
Word Count: 3.2k
All morning you had been steeling yourself, trying to mentally prepare for the meeting that was about to take place, the lawyer that you were about to see.
Rhysand.
Honestly, you figured you would rather go up against pretty much anyone else in the world. It wasn’t just that he was conceited and obnoxious, which he definitely was. It wasn’t even the smugness that was a constant feature of his face.
No, the real problem was that he was good. Really good.
And he knew it.
You had been the city’s top lawyer until he showed up nearly a year ago. Suddenly he was giving you a run for your money and competing with you for the clients with the biggest names.
It was maddening. You hated him. You really, truly hated him.
Which, of course, he loved.
This case was pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. An ex husband and wife land dispute. Your client, Amelia, was suing Rhysand’s client, trying to get the house. The four of you, the plaintiff, the defendant, and the lawyers, were holding a meeting to see if this could be worked out amicably. You always liked to take an opportunity to avoid playing dirty if you could help it.
Rhysand, of course, was just the opposite. It had taken many phone calls and a lot of pleading on your end to get him to even show up with his client.
He stared across the table at you now, his eyes dark, unwavering. He was trying to intimidate you, you knew, but you were holding strong. You had never been someone who scared easily. And you were determined. You would not lose this case.
---
You lost the case.
Amelia folded, giving in, letting her asshole ex-husband keep the house that she had helped him buy nearly a decade ago.
You were furious. Not at her, not at anybody but Rhysand, who had somehow been able to persuade your client that he knew what was best.
The clients had left, and you had packed up your things, partway out the door when Rhysand purred after you, “Hey, Killer?”
Your shoulders tensed and you turned back to glare at him. “Don’t call me that.”
Rhysand smirked, his eyes dancing with delight. “Better luck next time.”
As you walked to your car, you were absolutely sure. You hated that man.
---
Weeks later, you were combing through files in your office for a case you were working on when your office phone rang.
You let out a sigh when you recognized the number.
“What do you want?” you asked, your tone sharp.
A deep chuckle on the other end. “That’s how you answer the phone?”
“When you’re the one calling.”
“Fair enough,” Rhysand said goodnaturedly. “I was hoping you could swing by my office sometime in the next few days. Whenever it’s convenient for you.”
You couldn’t help but pause for a beat in confusion, both at the request, and at his genial tone. “Why on earth would I do that?”
Rhysand sighed quietly, seemingly resigned. “I need your help.”
His office was about what you had expected. A huge, deep mahogany desk, black armchairs, black drapes to block out the blinding afternoon sun from the window behind him. It was dark and imposing, just like the man himself. As always, he was wearing an all-black suit, and as always, he was looking at you with a twinkle in his eye, like he knew more than you did.
In this case, you supposed it was true.
“I don’t understand,” you said finally. “What could I possibly help you with?”
Rhysand leaned back in his chair casually, placing his hands behind his head. It irritated you how nonchalant, how in control he always seemed.
“As much as I hate to admit it, Killer, you’re smart. You pay attention to details, pick up on important pieces that a lot of lawyers would miss.”
You narrowed your eyes at the vexing nickname he had given you, but decided to let it pass. “So?” you asked.
“So,” he said, drawing out the word, “this case I’ve been working on… it’s gotten complicated. And I could use a fresh pair of eyes to help untangle it.”
You crossed your arms, your eyes widening slightly, unable to hide your shock. “Me? I’m really the one you want help from?”
He blinked. “Yes. Did you not hear what I said?”
Resisting the urge to roll your eyes, you said, “I heard it, but I still don’t understand. We work at separate firms. You and I, we compete for clients all the time. Working together under the circumstances… it’s unheard of.”
Rhysand leaned forward, clasping his hands on the desk in front of him, his eyes sparking, his mouth curling up into a smirk. “Wouldn’t that make it all the more fun?”
“Fun?” You asked in disbelief. “Working with you?”
His smirk only grew. “Oh, I’m very fun. I promise.”
You bit your lip, your mind whirling. This man bothered you to no end. You would rather work with anyone else.
And yet…
It had been months since you had a case you could really sink your teeth into, one that you felt really mattered. On top of that, once word got out that you two, longtime rivals, were actually working together on a case? This could be huge for your career.
Resignedly, you said, “Tell me everything I need to know.”
Rhysand grinned. “Gladly.”
---
You could understand why someone might want help with a case like this. It was intense, with contradicting witnesses, no clear evidence, and to top it all off, it was high profile.
The two of you spent hours in Rhysand’s office, combing over files while Rhysand talked, catching you up to speed.
By the time you felt like you had a solid grasp of the case, the sun had set. You looked up from the file in front of you, your mind spinning from all of the information. Rhysand looked exhausted, though infuriatingly, still completely put together.
His eyes softened a bit as he looked back at you, his brows furrowing together slightly. “We can pick this back up tomorrow.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” he said decisively, snapping the folder in front of him shut. “We're not going to get any more work done if we’re this exhausted anyway.”
You nodded, tidying up the many folders on your side of Rhysand’s desk before slinging your gigantic purse over your shoulder.
You had turned for the door, but stopped short at Rhysand’s smug voice behind you, “You want to grab dinner?”
Narrowing your eyes, you turned back to face him. “With you? Absolutely not.”
His eyes sparkled with delight, his mouth curling up into a smirk. “Why not?”
“I still hate you. Working one case together won’t change that.”
Rhysand laughed. “We’ll just have to see, won’t we?”
For several days, you got through your to-do list at your own office as quickly as possible to give you and Rhysand ample time to pore over documents, make calls, and bicker about what steps to take next.
It was exhausting working with him. Even though he had been the one to seek out your “fresh eyes,” he still always thought that he was right.
“I’m telling you this guy’s a dead end. I’ve spoken with him twice already,” Rhysand said, clearly exasperated, pinching the bridge of his nose and closing his eyes.
“And I’m telling you that you’re wrong. We’re missing something here, I know it.”
Rhysand sighed, glancing at the clock on the wall. “Fine. But it’s too late to talk to him tonight, so we’ll have to pick this back up tomorrow.”
“Fine,” you said begrudgingly.
He looked at you with resignation as you gathered your things, like he was regretting ever getting you involved. Then, he said matter of factly, “Let’s get dinner.”
You scowled. “I told you--”
“I know, I know. You hate me,” he said, shutting down his computer and standing up, stretching his arms over his head. “But we both need to eat.”
He just continued looking at you until you rolled your eyes and agreed.
After arguing for several minutes, you finally chose a restaurant that you both liked, and before long, you were settled into a comfy booth with Rhysand looking across the table at you. He always looked like he was scrutinizing every part of you, like he could see straight through to your soul.
You hated to admit it, but his eyes… they shone even in the dim lighting, so blue they were almost purple. You had never seen eyes like his in your life.
His eyebrow lifted, his mouth curling into a smirk, and you realized you had been staring for too long. Hastily, you opened your menu, scanning its contents, though you could still feel his eyes on you.
Once you ordered, he cleared his throat, pinning you with his stare once again.
“What?” you lashed out. You felt like he was driving you insane.
Blinking in surprise, he asked, “What?”
“Why are you always staring at me?”
He laughed, his whole face lighting up. “I’m pretty sure you were staring at me.”
“I was not,” you countered, but even to your own ears, your voice sounded too high, too defensive.
Grinning, he said, “You were.”
You just rolled your eyes, desperately trying to think of a topic change.
“Why do you hate me so much?” he asked suddenly.
That was not the topic change that you were expecting. You looked at him in surprise for a moment, then counted the reasons on your fingers, “You came into town and stole half my clients, you’re the most arrogant and smug man I’ve ever met in my life, you’ve beaten me in too many cases to count and then rubbed it in my face, you’ve given me a weird nickname that I don’t understand, and you clearly hate me.”
You paused for a moment to look at him. He was gazing at you with the same smug, slightly amused expression he always wore. “Does that about cover it, or do you want me to keep going?” you asked.
“I’ve never hated you,” he said simply, his eyes softening a little.
Your eyes narrowed slightly as you tried to put the pieces together, to decipher this impossible man. He looked confident and calm as ever, but somehow, you believed him. It didn’t seem like he was lying.
“Well. You could’ve fooled me,” you said finally, unable to tear your gaze from his.
“The rest is true, obviously,” he smirked, tilting his head slightly as he looked at you. “But I thought this was all friendly competition until you kept deciding to tell me that you couldn’t stand me.”
You couldn’t think of anything to say. You felt like your mind was completely blank and it didn’t help that he was still pinning you down with those ridiculously piercing eyes.
“Why do you call me Killer?” You eventually spat out.
His smirk turned into a real smile. “The same reason I wanted your help. You’ve got a killer instinct.”
You snorted in disbelief. “Seriously?”
“What?” he asked, laughing. “Yes, seriously.”
“You’re ridiculous,” you said, but you found yourself unable to resist a small smile.
He just smiled at you, and through the rest of dinner, somehow, you felt your hatred for Rhysand dimming.
---
Things felt… different, after that dinner with Rhysand. You were both friendlier, less cordial. It seemed that you worked better together too, as you would bicker slightly less often.
He still pissed you off sometimes, to be clear, but it didn’t feel as deep as it did before. The two of you would get dinner together a few times a week now, and you wouldn’t even talk about work for many of them.
Rhysand and you were… friends.
You were still getting used to the idea.
Rhysand seemed thrilled. You had never seen him in a better mood than he had been the last few weeks.
As the two of you sat at dinner that night though, you felt lost in thought. There was something about the case that you were missing, something that didn’t add up.
“What is it?” he asked, his eyebrow arching up.
You took a deep breath, tapping your fingers on the table. “We’re missing something.”
Rhysand looked at the table. “What, do you need more ketchup?”
Rolling your eyes good naturedly, you waved him off. “The case, Rhys. We’re missing something about the case.”
He furrowed his eyebrows and listened intently while you worked through your thoughts out loud, going over the notes and evidence you two had found the past several weeks, until it hit you.
“The cameras,” you said hastily. “We’re missing footage.”
“How would you know that?” he asked.
You explained your thought process, how you remember seeing a camera in a spot that you never saw in footage that the company handed over.
“And if they didn’t give us that footage on purpose…” you trailed off.
“They’re hiding something from us,” Rhys finished.
You hadn’t felt like you had a real lead in ages. “We need to get back to the office.”
Rhys shook his head as he pulled cash out of his wallet and threw it onto the table. “We just need a computer. It would be faster to go to my place.”
You were too excited, too focused on the case to argue.
And so, that’s how you found yourself in Rhysand’s apartment.
The two of you were so engrossed in this revelation though, that you hardly noticed. You both sat at his dining room table, leaning in close over his laptop, focused on finding the missing piece that you so desperately needed.
It was impossible to tell how much time had passed before you excitedly pointed to the screen, “There!”
Rhysand went completely still beside you as he saw what you were pointing to. The answer to all your questions. It was what you needed to solve the case, you were sure of it.
You hadn’t realized how close you were sitting to him until you both looked at each other in disbelief, your faces only inches apart.
“You did it,” he said quietly, his eyes shining. “This is exactly what we needed.”
It took all you had to maintain eye contact with him. You felt like you could fall right into his eyes and drown.
When his eyes darted down to your lips for a moment, you felt your breath catch.
It didn’t seem real, somehow, when Rhysand leaned forward and met your lips with his, bringing his hand to cradle the back of your head comfortingly. Within a few moments, you were balling your fist in the front of his shirt, pulling him closer to you.
You gasped when he wrapped his hands around the backs of your thighs, picking you up in one fluid motion and carrying you to the couch, his lips trailing down your neck as he went.
Keeping his hold on you, he sat down on the couch, his hands trailing up to your hips as you straddled him, leaning in to kiss him again.
Rhysand. Your mind tried to make sense of it. You’re kissing Rhysand, of all people. And worse, there was fire flooding through your veins, your skin tingling with a need you hadn’t felt in a ridiculously long time.
And it was Rhysand who was making you feel like this.
When his hips jerked up and met yours, when you could feel just how badly he wanted you too, all your thoughts went out the window, and you just needed him.
As if he could read your mind, his hands started to wander across your body, in all the places that you had suddenly become desperate for him to touch.
After a moment though, reality began to set in again. Your mind began to wander. This had to be a bad idea.
Rhys felt the change in your body language and stopped what he was doing, leaning back to peer at your face. “What is it?” he asked softly.
“I…” you hesitated, unable to find the words. “I can’t.”
“Okay,” he said, gently guiding you off his lap so you sat next to him. “Are you okay?”
Your heart melted the slightest bit before you could stop it. “I’m fine. It’s just… this can’t be a good idea.”
“We hate each other,” you said, exasperated.
He blinked in confusion. “Why?”
Rhysand laughed incredulously. “You really still believe that?”
Your face heated. No. Obviously not. He had even told you himself that he never hated you.
With a resigned sigh you said quietly, “No.”
“What’s really going on?” he asked softly.
Biting your lip, you tried to think of a suitable answer, even when you finally recognized the truth in yourself.
You had feelings for him. You had for weeks.
And if you let this happen, you would have to come to terms with that.
That, and the fact that he might not feel the same about you. That this could all just be a fun hookup for him.
You couldn’t live with that.
And you obviously couldn’t tell him that.
“Nothing,” you said finally, quietly. “We just can’t.”
Rhysand shook his head. “I don’t believe you,” he said gently. “Please tell me what’s wrong. Did I do something?”
“No,” you said, your voice breaking. “You didn’t do anything.”
You hid your face in your hands and you felt him sit up straighter next to you.
“Then what is it?”
“Oh,” he said quietly after a moment.
“Oh?” you asked, your voice muffled.
“Let me just make one thing clear,” he said, his voice still gentle but slightly more authoritative now. “This isn’t a one-time thing for me. I like you. I have since we met.”
You pulled your face from your hands and looked at him incredulously. “What?”
He nodded, the smallest smile gracing his expression, so different from his usual smirk.
“Why were you such an asshole then?”
“I was just trying to get a rise out of you! I thought we were playing around, I didn’t know you actually hated me.”
You couldn’t help but laugh. This whole time.
The two of you were quiet for a moment before Rhysand said, “This is the part where you say how you feel about me.”
You groaned, unable to form the words.
So instead, you looked at him for a moment, at those gorgeous, purple eyes that you had become so accustomed to, and you kissed him.
---
A year later, you gave Rhysand a quick kiss before you both exited the car and walked into your very own law firm.
Well, yours and Rhysand’s, of course.
You got to work together on a fresh new case, one that you were both excited about. One that could really help people.
And you couldn't imagine being happier.

Omggg thank you so much!! 🩷🫶🏻🩷

Writing tag game by @bonecarversbestie
Thank you so much for tagging me @thelov3lybookworm you're the best 🩷
First of all, I am SO SORRY I've been so inactive 😭 Life has been insanely hectic but I promise that I am still cranking away and will have new fics for you all soon!
Anyway, onto the tag...
Describe your writing process from idea to posting/publishing
Gosh, is it dumb to say I don't really know? 😅
If we're talking about my own ideas, I truly don't know where they come from sometimes. A lot of times I'll be reading or watching a scene in something and it won't go exactly the way that I want it to. So then I'll start imagining how I would've done it, and then it kind of takes on a whole new life of its own.
For requests, I try to brainstorm a little more and really focus on the prompt so I can hopefully make the requester the best thing that I can.
Once I've got my idea, I honestly just sit down and write. I do get stuck, and then I'll have to go for a walk or take a shower or something and try to figure things out.
I edit and proofread as I go, and usually just post it when it's done.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I am a pantser alllll the way. For better or worse!
What do you listen to when you are writing?
Almost always Taylor Swift. She always makes me want to write, especially her moody, sad ones.
What’s your drink of choice(while writing)?
I'm not usually drinking much while writing, but once in a while I like to go to a coffee shop and get myself a latte.
Promote yourself! What’s your favorite thing you’ve written?
Ooooh, this is hard. One of my favorites is definitely Was Any of it True? and all of its sequels. I wasn't expecting to love this one so much, and it got a lot of traction which was really exciting. I also just love the characters in that one.
Share a fic of yours that you think is underrated/deserves more love.
Maybe Second Chance? I feel like Cassian doesn't get enough love sometimes 🤣
Do you have any advice for new writers?
I know everyone probably says this, but...Literally just sit down and write. Don't worry about if it's good, or if people will like it, or if you're formatting things correctly.
Just go for it! The best way to get better is to just do it and keep practicing.
What is a writing style/technique that others do really well that you'd like to get better at?
I am SO BAD at setting descriptions. What does the meadow look like? What does the room look like? Don't know, don't care.
(Cuz idk how to do it lol)
Is there a character you were surprised you enjoyed writing as much as you did?
Azriel! I was really new to the fandom and wasn't sure if anyone would even be interested in reading about him, but he was intriguing to me so I went for it... and now he's like my bread and butter!
Tagging: Anyone who wants to do it because I don't have writer friends lolol sorry

Aww, this is so sweet 🥹🥰 I'm so glad you liked it!!
Thank you so much for reading and sharing 🩷🩷
My Pain Fits in the Palm of Your Freezing Hand
Pairing: Azriel x Reader
Summary: Azriel and Reader are mutually pining for each other, but they don’t know it. Reader has been feeling all kinds of insecure lately, and as soon as Azirel figures out what’s wrong, he’s determined to help her see just how amazing she is.
Based on this request! 🩷
Warnings: body insecurities, a little angst
Word Count: 2.2k
Azriel stared at the ceiling in the dark, his wings splayed out beneath him in his gigantic bed at the House of Wind.
His shadows danced around him, seemingly trying to coax him to sleep already, but he couldn’t. He hadn’t been able to for weeks.
There was something going on with you, he could tell. You were being more distant than usual, quieter. Not just with him, but with all of your other friends, too.
Attempting to push the worry aside, he instead replayed scenes in his mind of you smiling at him, leaning your shoulder against his, brushing your fingers with his.
That had been the one thing that he couldn’t stop thinking about. You had never shied away from his scars, had never even looked at them for too long or asked questions. You had always touched him with your soft skin without any hesitation or reservations, right from the beginning.
Maybe he had fallen in love with you right then, that first time your hand brushed against his. He couldn’t be sure.
It didn’t matter, though, not really. You clearly saw him as a friend.
That was always the way, wasn’t it?
He sighed, squeezing his eyes shut, his concern flooding through him once again. He wasn’t sure you had someone to talk to, someone that you could unload your worries on.
Of course, he wanted to be that person for you. He just wasn’t sure how to get there.
It was remarkable really, how he could be so entirely exhausted from the day, yet his mind wouldn’t cease whispering to him about you.
At this rate, he would be lucky if he got even an hour’s worth of sleep before the sun came up.
---
Azriel looked like he hadn’t gotten enough sleep. Again.
He was still the most beautiful man alive, obviously. But those bags under his eyes couldn’t lie to you as well as the shadowsinger himself could.
And you knew it had been a lie when you had asked him if he was okay before Rhys’s inner circle meeting and he had offered you that crooked smile and reassured you that he was. Because Az only loses sleep when something is really bothering him.
His eyes settled on you across the table as Rhysand and Cassian bickered about some matter in the mountains. You readjusted your dress, knowing that it wouldn’t do anything to actually conceal how uncomfortable you had been feeling in your own skin these days.
It had been a nightmare getting dressed this morning, as it had been for weeks. Nothing about you had really changed, but recently you were having a more difficult time accepting that all of your dresses prominently showed your belly, the curves, and rolls that were not in flattering places.
Azriel’s eyes tracked the movements of your hands smoothing down your dress and you felt even more self conscious. It was a great effort to stop squirming and keep your hands at your sides, forcing your gaze on Rhysand.
Out of everyone, why did Azriel have to be the observant one who would surely notice how frumpy the dress looked on your body, especially compared to the High Lady at the head of the table? Surely it would’ve been better to have a massive crush on Cassian, who hardly looked at what anyone was wearing unless it was something revealing.
Azriel, though. Azriel noticed everything.
The thought was like a pit of dread in your stomach. Surely he knew how you felt about him.
It was embarrassing, really. The two of you had become pretty good friends over the last few years, after Rhysand had recruited you into his inner circle.
But, the more you got to know him, the stronger your feelings became, the more you withdrew. You didn’t want to bother him or annoy with your feelings, with your insecurities, your past. He had enough to deal with on his own, and he didn’t need you pestering him.
Without you even realizing it, the meeting had drawn to a close, and everyone was standing up, milling around before going about their day.
Suddenly Azriel appeared at your side, so close that one of his shadows tickled your arm. “How are you?” he asked, his eyes boring into yours like he could see straight into your soul.
“Good,” you couldn’t help but smile in his presence.
His eyes narrowed slightly, and the side of his mouth twitched up into half a smile. “Liar,” he murmured.
“Those damn shadows,” you scoffed.
“I didn’t need the shadows to help me out with that one,” he said, tilting his head slightly as he studied your face.
You felt your cheeks warm at his closeness, the intensity of his gaze. You needed to change the subject. Quickly. “How are you?”
His smile grew slightly. “Good.”
“Liar,” you grinned, arching your eyebrow.
He snorted before leveling his gaze on you again. “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.”
You hesitated. “It’s… a lot. And it’s also a little dumb. All at the same time.”
“Sounds like you need someone to talk to,” he said quietly. As he said it, you could have sworn that you saw his fingers flex slightly, like they wanted to reach for you.
“You don’t have to worry about my problems,” you said halfheartedly.
“I’ll be worrying about them whether or not you tell me,” he murmured.
The way he was looking at you, the concern dancing in his eyes… it made your knees weak. It also seemed to have made your brain short circuit because that’s really the only thing that would actually explain the response that came out of your mouth. “Okay. Let’s talk.”
You followed Azriel upstairs, to a sitting room near the bedroom that he frequented in the House of Wind.
You weren’t sure how you could possibly form the words in a way that would make sense to him, in a way that wouldn’t make you seem crazy or foolish.
But, he had offered, and he really seemed to care. So you would try. For him, if not for yourself.
---
You looked nervous as you settled into the armchair across from him, your hands wringing in your lap, your gaze landing anywhere but on Azriel.
He couldn’t imagine what plagued you so, but he was willing to do whatever it took to make you feel okay again.
“So,” you began, then clamped your mouth shut. Your eyes finally darted up, meeting his. “I don’t know how to explain any of it.”
Azriel couldn’t stop the quiet laugh that rushed out of him. “Do you want me to go first?”
That seemed to get your attention. You leaned forward, bracing your elbows on your knees. “Yes. Why do you look like you haven’t been sleeping?”
His brow furrowed in surprise. “You noticed that?”
You nodded, somewhat bashfully, your cheeks slightly pink. “I just -- I’ve been worried about you.”
Azriel’s heart did a somersault in his chest. His mouth tugged up into a smile. “I’ve been worried about you. That’s why I haven’t been sleeping.”
You blinked. “What do you mean?”
His expression softened as he gazed at you. “I care about you. When there’s something upsetting you, I tend to lose sleep,” he said gently.
“You…” you began, but trailed off. Azriel could practically see the wheels turning in your brain. “You really care about me that much?”
Azriel blew out a breath. “Cauldron, you’re really going to make me spell it out, aren’t you?”
Your brow furrowed in confusion, but you remained silent.
“I love you,” he murmured, surprising even himself that he finally said it. “I’ve loved you for a long time.”
Azriel held his breath as he waited for your response. Finally, you said, “Why?”
That was not the response he had been hoping for. “What do you mean, why?”
You made an exasperated noise, seemingly unable to look at him. “I just don’t understand. I’m awkward and annoying and I look awful in all of my clothes, and no matter what I do, I can’t fix the parts of my body that I don’t like--”
Azriel ended up right in front of you without even realizing that he had moved. He took both of your hands in his. “Hey, stop for a minute,” he said gently, though the way you were talking about yourself had his blood practically boiling. “Look at me.”
Reluctantly, you lifted your gaze to meet his. “You’re wrong,” he said simply, once your breathing had calmed.
“What?” you choked out.
“You’re wrong,” he murmured, rubbing the backs of your knuckles with his scarred thumbs. “I can’t think of anybody less annoying than you. I always want to be around you. Always,” he smiled, leaning closer to you conspiratorially. “And you know what else?”
You stayed silent, your lips slightly parted. Heat rushed through his body as he leaned closer still, bringing his mouth to your ear. “You’re beautiful. Breathtaking, actually.”
That was when you took a step back, pulling your hands from his. Azriel’s heart sank. “You don’t have to do that,” you said sadly.
“You don’t believe me?” Azriel asked. He couldn’t understand it. Why couldn’t you see yourself the way that he saw you?
“I just… You don’t have to say all that to make me feel better,” you said. “I know you’re trying to be nice, but --”
“I’m not trying to be nice,” Azriel spat.
Your eyes widened at the sudden outburst and he sighed, taking a step closer to you again. It was an effort to calm his voice, to not be frustrated with you for thinking that he could possibly make something like this up. “I’m not trying to be nice,” he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper now. “I’m telling you what I’ve been wanting to admit to you for years.”
When you remained silent, he knew he would have to prove it to you.
He gently took your hand in his again. “Come with me?”
You hesitated for a moment, but then followed him without a word. He led you to his bedroom, where he stood behind you as you faced a large floor length mirror on the wall.
“Oh gods, I do not want to do this,” you groaned.
“Just humor me, okay?” he said gently.
You sighed, but squared your shoulders and looked pointedly into the mirror. Azriel couldn’t help the swell of pride that he felt at that.
“I’m not sure what you see,” he murmured, dying to touch you, but keeping his hands to himself for the moment. “But I see a woman with the most stunning eyes,” you smiled slightly at that, your eyes crinkling around the corners. Azriel smiled, lightly curling a lock of your hair around his finger. “And the most beautiful hair. I’ve thought about running my hands through this hair about a million times.”
Azriel heard your breath hitch, and it took everything he had in him to not throw you onto the bed right then and there. Slowly, your eyes met his in the mirror. “And your smile?” His own smile grew at the thought. “Gods. I don’t even have words for your smile.”
He went on and on, his fingers lightly trailing down your sides as he revealed the truth to you, the truth of how long he had been watching you, how badly he had wanted you.
“Don’t you see?” he finally asked quietly. “Don’t you see what I see?”
Slowly, you turned around to face him. “Thank you, Azriel. I believe you. I believe that it’s what you see. But…”
He arched an eyebrow. “But?”
“I’m too much work,” you said quietly. “I’m too much work to love. I’ve got too much baggage.”
Azriel’s brow furrowed in confusion. “You think I don’t understand being insecure?” he says, holding his scarred hands up in front of him. “You think I don’t understand carrying the burden of the past?”
“But--”
“Do you think I’m too much work?” he asked.
“No, of course not.”
He looked at you pointedly. “Listen to me. I love you. I know you don’t believe me, but it’s true. And if you’ll let me, I’ll remind you every day how beautiful, smart, kind, and incredible you are.” He settled his hands on your waist, pulling you slightly closer to him, leaning his forehead against yours. “You’re not too much. I’ll work every day for eternity for you. I can handle whatever you throw at me.”
A tear rolled down your cheek as you looked up at him, and he gently wiped it away with the pad of his thumb. “I love you,” you choked out.
Azriel couldn’t hold it back anymore. He kissed you softly, and you melted into him the moment his lips met yours.
He held you close, cradling you to his chest, determined to be whatever you needed for as long as you would let him.

Will It Patch Your Broken Wings?
Pairing: Azriel x Reader
Summary: Azriel is feeling insecure one night and cheats on Reader. She is absolutely devastated and wants nothing to do with him, but he is determined to show her how much he loves her.
Inspired by the love triangle in Taylor Swift’s betty/august/cardigan
Based on this request! 🩷
Warnings: angst, cheating, swearing
Word Count: 6.3k
Betty, I know where it all went wrong
Your favorite song was playing
From the far side of the gym
I was nowhere to be found
I hate the crowds, you know that
Plus, I saw you dance with him
Azriel tucked his wing in tighter as you led him through Rita’s, your hand in his, a bounce in your step. You loved it here: the energy, the dancing, the music.
Azriel, on the other hand, really only went along because he loved you.
The music was pounding in Azriel’s mind, overwhelming his senses. He could normally block it out and will his body to be loose enough to attempt to dance with you, but today had been a particularly long day in which he had to… secure information from some traitors.
He didn’t let his memory go past that, not when he was with you. But it had been a day. A terrible day.
You were dancing now, like you were born to do it, like you didn’t care at all who was watching. You turned to him, a bright smile lighting up your face, and he couldn’t help but soften at the sight, feeling comforted by your effortless radiance.
He would never understand why you had chosen him. He was thankful of course, but he was willing to admit the two of you sometimes seemed like an unlikely pair. You were bright and bubbly, lighting up every room -- a direct juxtaposition to his shadows, his darkness, his tendency to be stoic and silent.
Watching him stay completely still in the middle of the crowd, your face fell, and you sidled up to him, craning your neck to look him in the eyes as you got closer, wrapping your arms around his waist. “Are you okay? We can go home if you want.”
Azriel smiled faintly at you, dipping his head to give you a quick kiss. “Long day. You can dance. I’m going for a drink.”
You nodded, but still eyed him warily for a moment, gaze lingering on his swirling shadows, before turning back to the dance floor.
By the time Azriel got his drink (the strongest they had), you were fully engrossed in a song that he realized was one of your favorites. He watched as you writhed on the middle of the dance floor, swaying your hips, a bright smile on your face.
A male came up to you then, taking your hand and twirling you under his arm. You laughed brightly before moving away from him, dancing on your own once again.
Azriel couldn’t stop his heart from plummeting. That’s the kind of male she should be with, he thought. The kind that goes to a normal job and comes home without shadows or demons to chase away in his mind. The kind that can dance and twirl and laugh with you without a care in the world.
He watched as you danced and danced, occasionally dancing with a random male for a moment before moving on.
She deserves better than you. She always has.
His breath was coming faster and faster now, the music pounding in his ears, through his skull, all that heat from so many bodies closing in on him. He had to get out, had to stretch his wings, had to get out.
Azriel shoved through the crowd and burst through the doors, out into the cool night, stretching out his wings and breathing deeply. He cursed himself. He was normally better than this, better at maintaining his emotions, his panic. By the Cauldron, he was the Night Court’s spymaster and he couldn’t handle an evening in a nightclub with his lover.
Pathetic. That’s what he was.
“Are you okay?” a light, sing-songy voice broke through his rumbling thoughts.
He turned to see a very pretty High Fae woman. She was dressed a bit like Mor, he couldn’t help thinking, wearing a thin red dress that showed off all her assets, her light brown hair cascading down past her shoulders.
She gave him a look that he hadn’t seen, or at least paid attention to, from a stranger in a very long time.
He blinked. “Honestly? I don’t think so.”
Her lips slowly curved up into a sultry smile. “Anything I would be able to help you with?”
No. No, you cannot help me. I don't think anybody can.
She watched him, her eyes sparkling with mischief, before she tilted her head for him to follow.
And Mother save him, he did.
---
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
'Cause you were never mine.
Your heart had been pounding, your body trembling, ever since you realized that Azriel was nowhere to be found.
Something must have happened to him. It was the only explanation. He wouldn’t just leave you without a word.
But, what could have possibly happened to the shadowsinger, in Velaris, of all places?
Your hand shook as you raised it to pound on the door of the river house.
Rhysand was the one who answered, shirtless, hair a mess. He looked very unhappy to see you.
“I need you to find Azriel,” you nearly shouted before he could scold you.
He sobered immediately, noticing your distress. “What do you mean?”
You explained to him what had happened, that he had seemed off at Rita's, that he told you he was going to get a drink, then vanished. You had assumed that he had been lingering on the outskirts of the dance floor, and didn't notice for quite some time that he had left completely.
“I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation,” he said soothingly. “Did you check your apartment?”
You nodded. He wasn't there, at the home he shared with you. “And the townhouse.”
Rhysand's violet eyes were contemplative. Hesitating.
“Can't you just…feel for him or whatever?”
He sighed, running his hand through his hair. “Yeah. I can.”
“Then do it!”
Rhysand's eyes went unfocused after a beat, and when they widened again in surprise, you knew he had found him.
“What is it? Is he okay?”
“He's… at a random apartment. At least it's not one that I recognize.”
Your heart lurched. “What? Why?”
Rhys shrugged, his expression darkening. “Okay. Shit. Wait here, I'll go tell Feyre what's going on and take you to him.”
Rhysand came back a moment later, now in his normal black attire, and winnowed you in front of an apartment complex not far from Rita's. You had certainly never been here before. The silence was agony as you followed Rhys up the stairs, to the door.
He glanced back at you, a question in his eyes. You shook your head and he knocked, the sound rattling around in your skull.
You heard shuffling, giggling, and then.
Then.
A woman answered the door. A beautiful woman who was wearing Azriel's shirt.
A woman who was wearing your lover’s shirt and nothing else.
Your knees nearly buckled. You tasted bile in your mouth. You were going to be sick.
She cocked her head to the side. “Yes?”
Rhysand was deathly still, his power rippling from him, darkening the doorway. You remained behind him, but you had to know. Had to know for sure.
So you peeked around Rhysand's shoulder, further into the woman's apartment.
And saw Azriel, bare chested, lying in her bed, the sheets bunched up at his waist, his wings drooping on the ground, his hand tucked under his head, staring at the ceiling, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
You barely had time to spin around before you emptied your stomach in the hallway.
---
The worst thing that I ever did
was what I did to you.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, Az?” Rhysand's voice boomed from the door the woman had just answered.
Hearing such a familiar voice in such an unfamiliar setting was initially what shocked Azriel enough that he nearly fell out of bed.
Then it hit him.
Rhysand was here.
No no no no no no--
Azriel scrambled up out of the woman's bed, frantically searching for his pants and tugging them on.
“I-”
“Don't answer that.” Rhysand spat, and it was then that Azriel realized Rhys was holding you upright as both of you lingered in the doorway.
His heart stopped working. His mind stopped working.
He said your name, but it came out more like a croak.
You were trembling in Rhysand's arms, tears sliding down your cheeks.
What had he done what had he done what had he done--
Azriel took a step forward, but you recoiled, and he knew you would've fallen to the ground if Rhysand hadn't been holding you.
You looked… afraid of him. Not just hurt, not just disgusted, but actually afraid.
He said your name again, his voice and his heart breaking, but you turned to Rhysand and said in the smallest voice he'd ever heard, “Get me away from him.”
Rhysand shot you one last withering glance before he winnowed out of sight, taking you with him.
It was silent for a moment, until the woman said, “If I'd known you were such an asshole, I never would have done this.”
Azriel sank to his knees and wept.
---
You drew stars around my scars
But now I'm bleeding.
Back at the river house, Feyre was holding you as your body continued to shake, silent tears continued to fall, while Rhysand paced back and forth, rage radiating off of him.
“Azriel?” Feyre asked, wide eyed. “Our Azriel?”
“He's certainly not mine anymore,” you sniffed, and Feyre winced, shooting you an apologetic glance, holding you a little tighter.
“I can't believe it,” Rhys said, still pacing in the spare room where they had set you up for the night. “I cannot believe him.”
There was a knock on the door of the house and you froze. You all knew who it was.
You looked at Rhys, your eyes pleading.
“I won't let him in,” he said, his expression softening as he turned to you. “I'll ward the fucking house against him if I have to,” he growled, mostly to himself, as he retreated to send him away.
You leaned further into Feyre, grateful for your friends.
For his friends, you realized. His family.
They were on your side now, but you knew where their allegiance would ultimately lie.
In losing Azriel, you would lose your family, too.
Sobs racked your body then, and Feyre held on tight, settling her cheek on the top of your head.
You thought of all the walls Azriel had broken down around your heart, all the promises he had made about love and forever. All the broken pieces of you that you had let him see, that he had helped you heal.
But it was all a lie.
You couldn't stop seeing it -- the woman, naked except for his shirt; Azriel, naked in her bed.
You wept and wept until there was absolutely nothing left of you.
---
A friend to all is a friend to none
Chase two girls, lose the one.
Azriel had come to the river house twice a day for the past three days.
Each time, Rhysand opened the door, molten hot rage in his eyes, and told him to leave, that you weren’t ready yet. Azriel couldn’t blame him.
He knew there was nothing he could do, nothing he could say to make it better. To make you better. He could try to explain what he had been feeling that night, but it wouldn’t matter, not really. It was all excuses, and he knew it.
Azriel had destroyed everything. And now he just had to watch as his world burned down.
Letting out a shuddering sigh, he knocked on Rhysand’s door, expecting to see his pissed off brother again, but it was Feyre who appeared.
He had never seen his High Lady look so disappointed. He hated that it was directed at him.
“How could you do it?” she said, crossing her arms, leaning against the doorway.
Azriel felt tears prickling his eyes, and willed them not to fall. “I never felt like I deserved her,” he said quietly.
“Well you definitely don’t now.”
He winced. “I know. I just -- I want to see her. How is she?”
Feyre furrowed her brow, furious. “How is she? She hasn’t left her room since she got here. Elain’s been forcing water down her throat so she doesn’t shrivel up and die, that’s how she is.”
Azriel swallowed, trying to steady his shaking hands. He felt like he was drowning. He wished he would, if it meant that it would make you stop feeling like that. “Do you think she’ll talk to me?”
She studied him, her mouth a hard, thin line. Finally, she turned, heading inside and he followed her, his knees wobbling.
When they made it to your door, she knocked softly, saying through the door, “He’s here.”
Azriel held his breath until the door opened, slowly.
And when he saw you, he couldn’t breathe. You looked… devastating. Your eyes were red and swollen, you were pale, your hair was a mess.
It was his fault. He had done this to you. He felt sick.
Your eyes were hollow when you looked at him, like you didn’t feel anything at all.
“Do you want me to stay?” Feyre asked you quietly.
You shook your head, your eyes darting away from Azriel. Feyre shot him a warning glare before she reluctantly went down the hallway.
You turned, moving to sit on the bed that looked like it hadn’t been made in days, every movement you made looking wary, exhausted. Destroyed. Your eyes were fixed on your hands in your lap, unwilling to look at him.
Azriel lingered just inside the room, feeling uncomfortable in his skin. He longed to hold you in his arms, to kiss your pain away.
He said your name, willing you to look at him. You flinched.
It felt like a punch to the gut. Azriel wanted the earth to swallow him whole.
“I am so, so sorry,” he rasped.
You shook your head, not looking up. “How could you do this, Az? How could you do this to me?” Your voice cracked when you said his name.
Tears started to fall down his own cheeks as he said, “I… don’t know. I wasn’t thinking. I saw you dancing with those males, looking so carefree, and I didn’t feel like I fit into that part of your life. I’ve always felt like you deserved someone better than me, someone… easier.”
Finally, you looked up at him, and he wished you hadn’t. Your eyes were full of fury. And hurt. He had never seen you like that before. “You cheated on me because I danced with some guys for two seconds?”
“No, no, that’s not what I meant,” Azriel tried.
“You think I wanted somebody like them? Somebody easier?”
Azriel opened his mouth, then closed it again. “I thought--”
“I wanted you,” you spat, and he recoiled at the hurt in your voice, at the pain in your eyes that he had put there. “All I ever wanted was you.”
He couldn't breathe. His voice came out weaker than he had ever heard it, “I'm sorry. It was a mistake, I'm a miserable, miserable fool. I want you. You're all I want.”
You laughed, but it was a hollow, bitter sound. “How can you even say that after what you did?”
“I know, you’re right,” he sighed, raking a scarred hand through his hair, his shadows dancing around his arms. “It doesn’t make sense, what I did. It was stupid and awful, and the worst thing that I’ve ever done, and I am so so sorry,” he said, taking a step forward, reaching his hand out to take yours.
“Don’t touch me,” you spat, wrenching your hand away.
He blinked, taking a step back, his heart in his throat.
“You said you loved me,” you said, your voice now barely a whisper, as if all your energy had been completely drained. “You said you wanted to be with me forever. Did you ever mean any of it?”
“Of course I did,” he said softly. “I still do. I love you. I want you.”
You sniffed, putting your head in your hands. “Well. You should’ve thought of that before you fucked her.”
He blanched at your tone, at your language. He didn’t think you’d ever said that word before, at least not around him.
“Please,” he said, his voice breaking, as he knelt down in front of you, trying to meet your eyes. “Please, what can I do? What can I do to fix this?”
Your eyes rose to meet his. You took in the sight, the shadowsinger kneeling before you, begging for your forgiveness. “You can’t fix it,” you said, seething. “You left me. You abandoned me at Rita’s. Do you have any idea how that felt? I thought something horrible had happened to you!”
Azriel tightened his jaw. He hadn’t known, hadn’t even thought about--
“And then to see you. With her. In her bed,” you broke off, looking at the ceiling, trying to keep the tears from falling, he knew.
“I’m sorry.” It was all he could say. His tears were flowing down his cheeks now and he hastily wiped them away, not wanting to take his eyes off you for fear that you would vanish.
After a long moment, you leveled your gaze on him again. “Would you have told me? If I wasn’t worried sick, if I had just gone home, and waited for you to stumble on in, would you have told me? Or would you just keep acting like everything was fine, knowing that you had just betrayed me?”
Azriel swallowed hard. He thought about the guilt he had felt immediately, how he was contemplating what the hell he was going to tell you as he was staring at that ceiling before Rhysand had knocked. “I would’ve told you,” he said, his voice husky. “I was going to tell you.”
You scoffed, shaking your head, looking anywhere but him. “I don’t even know why I asked. How can I trust anything you say?”
“I don’t know. But it’s true,” he said, shifting on his knees, wishing he could reach for your hand.
Hiding your face in your hands, you said, barely audibly, “I hate you. I hate you for doing this to me and making me feel like this.”
Azriel’s heart finally shattered completely. He knew he would never be able to put the pieces back together, as long as he lived. He had done this to you, his beautiful, bubbly, happy love. Reduced to this. To hating him. And he couldn’t even blame you.
“I’m sorry,” he said again, his voice barely above a whisper. “I love you.”
“Stop saying that,” you cried.
“It’s true. It’s all I’ve got. I won’t try to make excuses, I’m just … I’m sorry. And I love you. I’ll never stop loving you.”
You sniffled, and took your hands away from your face, looking to the ceiling once again, like you were steeling yourself to say what you were about to. “I never want to see you again,” you said, weakly. “You can have the apartment. Elain and Nesta are packing my things right now.”
Azriel shook his head, his panic rising, “No, no, you don’t have to--”
“I do,” you cut him off. “It’s done, Az. We’re done,” you rose off the bed and went to the washroom, looking unsteady on your feet. “You can go now.”
You shut yourself in behind the closed door, and it was five hundred years of will and training that carried his legs out of the river house, and out of your life forever.
Azriel took to the sky, flying and flying, the wind biting at his skin, at his eyes. He kept picturing your heartbroken expression, the words you spoke to him.
He didn't stop flying until he made it to the depths of the Illyrian mountains, where he knew he would be well and truly alone.
Spotting a flat section nestled between several mountains, he landed in the snow, barely stopping long enough to punch the mountainside. It was stupid, he knew, he was more likely to break his hand than blow off any of this steam, but he had to do something to stop this pain, this panic, this despair that he could blame on nobody but himself.
He had lost you. He had lost the love of his life forever because he couldn't overcome his fears. He had been so scared that he wasn't good enough for you that he made sure that it was true.
Grunting, he punched the mountainside over and over again until his knuckles bled, and then he punched it some more. Tears froze on his cheeks, the wind chilling him to the bone.
Az was dimly aware of someone landing behind him, so hard it shook the ground beneath his feet. He kept punching.
“You're not going to solve your problems out here,” Cassian called to him.
Finally, Azriel halted, turning around to face his brother. “You know, we have better things to punch,” Cassian added.
Azriel scowled, sinking into the snow, exhausted.
Cassian strode over to him, plopping down a few feet away, hissing at the cold now sleeping through his pants. He studied Azriel, seemingly waiting for him to speak.
“She hates me,” Azriel whispered finally. “She said she never wants to see me again.”
Cassian sucked a breath in through his teeth. “Fuck.”
Azriel could only nod sadly.
“You know she didn't mean it. At least not the second part. She loves you.”
Sniffing, wiping at his eyes, Azriel groaned. “I don't know if she does anymore.”
“She does,” Cassian said quietly. “I know she does.”
After a beat of silence, Cassian asked, “What are you going to do?”
Azriel shrugged, watching his bloody hands start to heal. “Well. I could either hang around, keep apologizing, and piss her off more, or… leave her alone…”
“And piss her off more,” Cassian added.
A dry laugh escaped Azriel. “Exactly.”
Cassian was quiet for a moment, seemingly pondering how to help him.
“I’m not giving up on her,” Azriel finally said, with more conviction than he felt. “I just… I don't want to make it worse.”
“Az, I hate to tell you this, but I don't think it could get much worse,” Cassian said, grimacing.
Azriel just sighed, stretching out his wings behind him.
---
I knew I'd curse you for the longest time
Chasing shadows in the grocery line.
Seeing Azriel again, seeing him beg on his knees for your forgiveness, seeing how hollow his eyes looked, how his shadows were so unrelenting around him, had absolutely wrecked you.
It was another few days until you had the courage to leave the river house at all.
Azriel had come back to the river house several times, but you had your friends send him away. You couldn’t bear to see him again.
Feyre and Rhysand had checked on you frequently during your stay at their house, consoling you, cursing Azriel’s name right along with you. Rhys had even loaned you what you needed to get your own apartment, on the other side of Velaris from the one that you once shared with Azriel.
That part seemed to make it final, somehow. You could almost convince yourself it had all been a dream until you made your way to your new, empty apartment, without a trace of the love that used to be yours.
That empty apartment wrecked you all over again, and as you looked around it for the first time, your body folded in half, arms wrapping around your stomach as your body racked with sobs.
You had started to regret insisting that you do this part by yourself.
It was really over. Azriel really cheated on you and it was really done.
You knew it was time to start distancing yourself from Azriel’s family. They had undoubtedly been on your side this whole time, but even Rhysand and Feyre were starting to change their tune slightly. You know he loves you still. You know he’s a good male. You know he’s so sorry.
You understood where they were coming from, really, you did.
But that didn’t make it hurt less. What you needed was to hate him. It was the only way you could ever bring yourself to move on, to start living your life again.
You had been solemnly unpacking for a few hours when there was a knock on your door. You stiffened immediately. Rhysand and Feyre had said that they wouldn’t tell Azriel where you lived, but maybe he had figured it out?
“Relax sweetheart, it’s me,” Cassian said on the other side of the door, and you did relax, if only slightly. You hadn’t seen him since before this all started.
Reluctantly you let him in. He was sauntering, wearing that easy smirk he always donned. You couldn’t decide if it was comforting or annoying.
Cassian whistled as he looked around. “Nice place.”
You settled on the couch, tucking your feet underneath you. “What are you doing here?”
His eyes softened as he walked closer to you, then perched next to you on the couch, not quite relaxed. “I wanted to check on you.”
“You can report back to Azriel that I’m just as pissed as ever,” you grumbled.
“He doesn’t know I’m here,” Cassian said quietly.
Skeptically, you turned to face him. You were sure he would be the most likely to take Azriel’s side.
After a moment, Cassian said, “If it’s any consolation, he hates himself probably about as much as you hate him right now.”
“I don’t know if that makes me feel better or worse,” you admitted.
Cassian sighed, leaning back into the couch. “Did you mean it? That you never wanted to see him again?”
You shifted, hugging your knees to your chest. “In the moment I did. Thinking about seeing him now… it breaks me apart. But, thinking about the rest of my life completely without him…”
“That breaks you apart too?” Cassian offered.
You nodded, tears stinging your eyes.
“Okay, look,” Cassian said, turning so he fully faced you. “I’m going to tell you something. You’re my friend and he’s my brother, and I love you both, so I need you to know I’m not trying to convince you of anything, I am merely giving you information. Okay?”
“O-kay…”
He took a deep breath, seemingly gathering his thoughts, before he continued. “Azriel has always felt like he was inferior. The way he was raised… he carries that around more than a lot of people think. He often thinks that he isn’t good enough for people, but especially you.”
“How do you know?” You knew that Az still dealt with a lot from his childhood, but he wouldn’t often voice those things to you. He had mentioned something about not feeling good enough when you saw him, but you weren’t sure what to make of it.
“He mentioned it to me a few times, that he didn’t feel like he was the kind of person you should be with. You’re so bright and bubbly, he felt like you deserved somebody who was the same.”
You rested your cheek on your knee, trying to digest the information. “But… he must have known I never actually felt like that, right?”
Cassian shrugged. “On a good day, maybe. But deep down I think he always had it in the back of his mind: that fear that he wasn’t right for you.”
“He should’ve told me,” you said quietly.
“I agree. And I’m not saying that it excuses what he did, but that day…it was a hard one for him. What he had to do in the Court of Nightmares.”
Your stomach dropped. You hadn’t even thought about that.
“Well, he should’ve told me that too.”
Cassian nodded. “Yes. He should have.”
You groaned. “I hate this.”
“I know,” he said quietly, wrapping an arm around your shoulders, pulling you into him. “I’m sorry.”
Cassian let you cry on his chest for a long moment before he said, “hH wants to come see you, you know. He doesn't want to give up on you.”
When you didn't respond, he said softly, “Just think about it.”
Days later, all that Cassian had said was still ringing in your ears, even as you walked through the market when it was the busiest.
Despite everything, it hurt your heart to think that Azriel had ever felt like he wasn't enough for you. And you were still so hurt at what he had done and what you had seen, but it at least made more sense now.
You hated this feeling of loneliness that followed you around wherever you went now, rooted so deeply in you that you were scared it would never go away.
Azriel had been so good to you for so long. Was one mistake really worth throwing everything away?
Every time you had the thought though, you remembered the sight of him in her bed and wanted to scream or cry or kick something.
Suddenly, as you were nearing the edge of the market, you swore you saw the wisp of a curling shadow out of the corner of your eye and stiffened. This hadn't been the first time that you thought you glimpsed Azriel's shadows or wings in public since it happened.
But, no this time it was real. And he saw you too.
You willed your feet to move, but they wouldn't. You couldn't tear your eyes away from him, from this man who had loved and hurt you so completely.
Azriel approached you like you were an injured animal he was trying not to scare away. Your heart thundered in your chest.
“Hi,” he said in what you knew was his gentlest voice.
You couldn't bring yourself to speak. Still, after everything, you missed him. And seeing him now… it was too much to bear. Yet, too much to walk away.
“I'm sorry,” he said softly, his eyes swimming with pain and affection. His shadows were on full display, despite the fact that they usually shied away from the sun.
“You've already said that,” you murmured, still rooted to the spot.
“I know. And I'll keep saying it every chance I get. If I knew where you lived, I'd send you flowers or a book or dinner from that restaurant you love every day and I'd tell you I'm sorry and that I love you.” His voice was shaky in a way you had never heard from the shadowsinger.
“You would not,” you said, trying to sound angry but it just came out weak.
“Of course I would,” he said, risking a step closer to you. “I would do anything to take your pain away. You have to believe that.”
You did. You did believe that he meant it. But you didn't know if it would be enough.
For a moment you let yourself gaze at the man you once trusted with your whole heart. He looked thinner, like he hadn't been eating enough. His eyes were still hollow, dark bags beneath them. Even his wings drooped slightly. He might look even worse than you did.
And yet, you could still see the beautiful, sweet shadowsinger you had fallen in love with so long ago.
Finally you said quietly, “I'll tell Rhys he can give you my address.”
Those hazel eyes sparked with hope. And love. Definitely love.
---
The only thing I wanna do
Is make it up to you.
When you went out the next morning, there was a book left at your doorstep with a note attached.
It was the newest from one of your favorite authors. Your lips formed the tiniest smile.
The note read:
I couldn't start my groveling with something too cliche, so I went straight for your romance novels.
I've never told you this, but I always love when you tell me about the books you’re reading. Your entire face lights up when you do. And you know I love a fairytale ending.
I hope you have a good day today.
I'm so sorry for what I did. I'm so sorry for hurting you.
I love you so much. I always will.
-Az
You couldn't help but laugh a little by the time you got to the end. As if anybody else would be writing you this note.
The next morning when you stepped out your door, there was a pastry from your favorite cafe in a to-go bag. On the bag was a note:
I'm really hoping you'll find this in the morning so it's still good.
If not, you just come let me know and I'll drop everything to get you a fresh one.
I miss you.
My life is a nightmare without you.
I'm so sorry.
I love you.
-Az
And so it went. Every morning, rain or shine, Azriel would leave something that he knew you would love, with a note, always ending in some version of I'm sorry. I love you.
It did warm your heart that had turned so cold. The dedication alone was enough to prove to you that he really was sorry for what he did.
Yet, every time a note would make you laugh or cry so much that you wanted to run to his arms, you were always stopped by that image that plagued your mind. By the fact that he did what he did and no amount of little gifts would change it.
Months passed, and to Azriel's credit, the gifts, and more importantly the notes, kept coming. Your bedside drawer was completely full of them. And there may have been a night or two when you missed him so desperately that you would read them over and over again until your eyes burned and you had no choice but to cry yourself to sleep.
You would sometimes lay awake at night, picturing him coming up to your door. Several times you wanted to wait up for him, to listen for his footsteps, to pull him into your apartment, forget everything that happened and just be happy again.
But you never had the nerve. You were terrified of going through it all again.
Until one day, there was no gift at your door. No note. No sign of him anywhere.
Your heart plummeted. Had something happened to him? Was he hurt? Injured on some mission Rhysand sent him on?
Or had he finally given up on you?
It wasn't until that moment that you were willing to admit to yourself how much you had been relying on those notes, those little pieces of him.
You went through your day in a daze, devastated all over again.
It was early in the evening when there was a knock on your door. For a moment, you hoped it would be Azriel. You hadn't actually seen him for months. But you quickly realized it was more likely to be one of your friends, who still came by, despite what you had initially thought.
So, the breath was knocked completely out of you when it was indeed the shadowsinger waiting on the other side of the door.
His handsome face, his soft expression, on his face made you want to weep. You missed him so much.
Azriel smiled somewhat shyly as he gazed down at you, holding a paper bag in his hand. “I'm sorry it's late. Rhys has got me scouting out some things, and I didn't get back here until now. I brought dinner,” he said, holding it out to you.
You recognized it from your favorite restaurant. With shaking hands, you took it from him, spotting the note attached to the outside.
I'm sorry. I love you.
I'm sorry. I love you.
I'm sorry. I love you.
Over and over again it was repeated, taking up the entire paper. You placed it on a table inside before your gaze flicked back to him. He was watching you closely, his wings tucked in tightly behind him.
“I thought you gave up on me,” you whispered.
His timid smile fell. “Never,” he said softly. “I'll never give up on you. I love you so much.”
Tears brimmed your eyes and all of a sudden, you knew you couldn't take it anymore. You didn't want to hate him, you didn't want to dwell on the one awful thing that he had done. You had a drawer full of wonderful things that he had done.
“I love you, too,” you murmured, the tears spilling freely down your cheeks now.
A sound that sounded distinctly like a sob escaped Azriel, and he wrapped his arms around you, crushing you into his chest. “I never thought I'd hear you say that again,” he sniffed, his hand cupping the back of your head, kissing your temple.
After a long moment, he took your face in his hands, gazing at you for a moment before he slowly kissed your tears away. You laughed lightly and he smiled, leaning in to kiss you so softly, like he was afraid you would break.
“I love you,” he murmured against your mouth. “I love you so much.”
You pulled back long enough to gently brush his tears away. “No more secrets. If you're struggling with something, you need to tell me.”
“I know. I'm sorry. No more secrets.”
“And nobody else. Ever.”
He winced. “I'm so sorry, love.”
“I know you are,” you said softly, cupping his cheek in your hand.
“Thank you,” he murmured. “Thank you for not giving up on me.”
You rose to your tiptoes to kiss him, wrapping your arms around his neck.
At last, you had found your way back home.

How Lucky I Am
Pairing: Modern Azriel x Reader
Summary: You and Azriel are interrupted by your adorable toddler while having adult time.
Based on this request! 🩷
Warnings: smut
Word Count: 1k
Azriel smiled at you over your daughter’s head as another episode of Bluey ended. Clara nuzzled into his side, looking up at him with a pout. “Is it really bedtime?”
“It is, sweetheart,” he said, ruffling her hair affectionately and sweeping her into his arms dramatically.
She giggled and grinned at you over Azriel’s shoulder as he carried her to the bathroom.
Azriel helped Clara brush her teeth while you gathered all the toys in the living room that were necessary for bedtime.
Clara was being tucked into bed by Azriel by the time you made it to her bedroom, your arms full of her favorite stuffies, which you dropped onto her bed.
She happily gathered them in her arms and looked at you both expectantly. You couldn’t help but smile. Her bedtime routine had gotten longer and longer in the past few months. She could be unbelievably persuasive.
You had been put on book duty. After plucking one of her favorites from her shelf, you settled onto the bed next to her, tucking her under your arm. You read the book the way you had a hundred times before, using silly voices and dramatic pauses while she looked at the pictures.
Then it was Azriel’s turn. You untangled yourself from Clara, sitting at the end of her bed as Azriel knelt beside it, stroking her hair gently as he sang her a lullaby. His voice was calming, beautiful. It quickly coaxed Clara to sleep.
It flooded you with emotion every time, no matter how many nights he had done it.
The two of you snuck out of her room quietly, and you took Azriel’s hand, leading him to your own bedroom.
You smiled at Azriel, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him into you.
“What?” he asked, laughing.
“I just love you,” you said, your lips a breath away from his. “And I love our life.”
His face lit up with a smile and he leaned in, closing the miniscule distance between you to give you a kiss.
“I love you,” he said against your lips.
You slid your hands down his chest as he kissed you, pulling his shirt up over his head.
“Mmm,” he moaned as you ran your hands back up, his muscles flexing at your touch.
His hands trailed down your body, slipping your leggings and underwear off, his eyes trained on yours. You gripped his shoulders as he settled his hand between your legs, teasing you with slow, gentle movements.
You sighed happily, tilting your head back as he kissed down your throat, pulling your t-shirt down to kiss across your shoulder.
Azriel wrapped an arm around your waist, holding you up and keeping you steady as he slowly pushed a finger into you.
“Az,” you groaned, and he laughed into your skin.
“Hmm? You want more?”
“More,” you agreed, and he kissed you as he slid in another finger, hitting that spot that always drove you absolutely crazy.
Your grip on his arms tightened as your legs started to shake, and he smiled, leaning in to put his lips to your ear, “It’s okay baby, I’ve got you,” he murmured.
You groaned and he whisked you up into his arms, spinning and dropping you on the bed, before crawling between your legs and teasingly licking a stripe up your center.
Gasping, you buried your fingers in his hair, pulling him deeper into you. You felt his laugh against you as his hands slid up to your thighs, spreading them further and pinning them to the mattress to keep you still.
It had been a long time since you had felt like this, since you had wanted him so badly that you could barely think straight.
Your toes curled when Azriel sucked hard on your clit, and it took everything you had to keep from crying out.
When you were sure you couldn’t take anymore, you wriggled out from under him and flipped him onto his back, straddling him.
He smirked up at you as you trailed your fingers lightly down his chest before reaching his waistband and pulling his sweatpants down.
His hips bucked up as you took him into your mouth, his hands weaving into your hair, his breath quickening.
You couldn’t help but smile at how you both reacted to one another, even after all these years together.
“I need you,” he ground out, and you wasted no time, sitting up and sliding down onto him slowly, your eyes locked on his.
Both of you were lost in each other. That is, until the door burst open behind you.
You and Azriel both froze, and you were suddenly thankful that you hadn’t yet taken your oversized shirt off.
“What are you doing?” Clara asked, sleepily.
Azriel gripped your hips, shielding you with a blanket as you twisted around to look at her. “Daddy and I were just --”
“Wrestling,” Azriel supplied. “Like you and your friends do sometimes, right?”
Clara nodded, satisfied. “I’m thirsty.”
“Okay, why don’t you go to the kitchen, and I’ll be there in just a second,” you said.
She agreed, bounding off to the kitchen.
You and Azriel fell against each other, laughing quietly, so Clara hopefully wouldn’t hear.
“Wrestling,” you giggled, rolling off of him and pulling your leggings back on.
“What was I supposed to say?” Azriel laughed, covering himself with a blanket.
You laughed, “I had no idea.”
After you were dressed, you rushed out into the kitchen, sat with Clara as she had a glass of water, and got her settled back into bed.
Azriel was smirking at you, his eyes alight with amusement when you made it back to your room.
“Do we think she’s in bed for good this time?” he asked.
“Hopefully,” you smiled, climbing over him and pressing your lips to his.
You felt him smile against your mouth, pulling you closer to him. “I love you,” he murmured.
“I love you,” you said quietly, feeling like the luckiest person in the world.

Rain Will Make the Flowers Grow
Pairing: Azriel x Reader ; platonic Reader x Cassian x Nesta
Summary: Reader has been terrified of storms ever since a bad night under the mountain. Azriel is usually there to help her through it, but when he's gone, Cassian and Nesta step up to the plate.
Based on this request! 🩷
Warnings: PTSD portrayal
Word Count: 1k
The crack of thunder was so loud that it rattled the windows, instantly taking you back to that place.
You had been one of the many fae who were stuck under the mountain during Amarantha’s rule. It had stormed like this on a… particularly bad night that you wished to the Mother that you could forget.
But you couldn't. And now every time there was a storm, it took you back to that night, under the mountain, when all hope had been lost.
Unlike then, though, you now had Azriel. And thank the Mother for that.
He felt you jolt awake and wrapped his arm around your waist, tucking you close to his side, stroking your hair gently with one hand, your waist with the other. “It's okay, you're okay,” he whispered against your ear. “You're safe, I'm here.”
Hot tears slipped from your eyes as he comforted you, calming you down minute by minute. “I love you, you're okay,” he murmured.
He was endlessly patient, never stopping until your body stopped shaking, until your breathing was steady.
You sniffled against his chest and he held you tighter, kissing the top of your head.
Once the storm finally passed, he continued to hold you until you managed to fall back to sleep, and even then, he refused to let go.
You didn't know what you would do without him.
---
Azriel held you close, his chin resting on the top of your head. “I'll be back before you know it, love.”
You sighed into his chest, wrapping your arms around his waist even tighter. “I know. It just never gets easier.”
“I know,” he said quietly, taking your chin between his thumb and index finger, raising your face to kiss you gently.
“Be careful,” you murmured, your voice cracking with emotion.
“Always,” he said, pressing his forehead to yours. “You know I'll always come home to you as soon as I can.”
You nodded, kissing him one last time before you took a step back, gazing up at him with an aching heart. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” he smiled sadly. “Promise me you'll let Cassian know if you need anything.”
You rolled your eyes good-naturedly, but agreed.
And then he was gone.
---
“Cassian,” Nesta whispered loudly, shaking him awake.
He grumbled incoherently, pulling her against his chest.
“It's storming.”
At that moment, Cassian couldn't understand why that was something he should remotely care about. “So?” He asked groggily.
“Azriel's not here,” she said, exasperated.
His eyes opened then, remembering how storms affected you. “Oh shit.”
“What do we do?” Nesta asked.
“I don't know. Do we… go to her room?”
“Would that be weird?”
“Maybe? But we can't just leave her alone,” Cassian said.
Cassian and Nesta both threw clothes on and trecked to your bedroom, hovering outside the door for a moment before Nesta pushed Cassian forward, and Cassian lightly knocked on the door, calling your name.
There was no response.
“Can we come in?”
They were both worried when once again you didn't respond, and after throwing a glance at Nesta, Cassian slowly opened your door.
His heart broke when he saw you, your legs curled up to your chest, your hands over your ears, your body shaking.
Cassian carefully made his way over to you, touching your leg gently to let you know that they were there.
You jumped at the contact, but looked relieved when you saw them.
“You guys don't have to--”
“Oh, don't do that,” Nesta said, not unkindly. “We're here with you, okay?”
Hesitantly, you nodded, and Nesta slid into bed with you, pulling you into her arms, your head cradled between her shoulder and her head.
Nesta looked pointedly at Cassian, who somewhat self consciously crawled into bed on the other side of you, rubbing your back in slow circles.
“We're here, you're not alone. You're okay,” Nesta murmured, stroking your hair.
“I'm sorry you have to take care of me,” you sniffled.
“Shhh,” Cassian murmured. “We're your family, that's what we're for.”
A loud crack of thunder sounded close by, and you nearly jumped out of your skin. Nesta and Cassian both held you tighter, reassuring you that you would be okay.
Eventually, your body stopped shaking and Cassian's heart lifted exponentially. He couldn't imagine how Azriel felt when this happened.
---
Azriel always came home as fast as he could after completing a mission, but this was different. He had hoped that the storm would miss Velaris, but he doubted that it actually would.
As far as he knew, it had never stormed when you were without him, and he didn't know how you would get through one if you were on your own.
He raced to his bedroom, his heart thundering in his chest as he worried over what state he might find you in.
He burst through the door… to find you, Cassian, and Nesta all tangled up in his bed together.
Well, more accurately, Cassian was sprawled out on the bed, and you and Nesta were squished together on one end.
His heart swelled. He should have known that his brother would be there for you like Azriel would have.
Nesta opened her eyes and smiled at Azriel sleepily before carefully detangling herself from you.
“She's okay,” she whispered to Azriel, before she shook Cassian awake and he too, carefully got out of the bed so he wouldn't wake you.
Cassian clapped Azriel on the shoulder as he passed. “She's all yours.”
“Thank you,” Azriel said.
They both waved it off, like it wasn't a big deal.
Azriel slid into bed next to you, pulling your body against his and breathing easily for the first time since he left you.
You shifted against him, looking up at him with a sleepy smile on your face. “You're home,” you mumbled.
“I'm home,” he smiled. “Are you okay?”
You nodded, leaning into his chest. “Cassian and Nesta stayed with me all night.”
“I'm glad,” he said, kissing your forehead.
“We're lucky, aren't we?” You mumbled.
“We definitely are.”
