You enter a small, dark shop. Inside is a glass counter with lit candles along a few edges. Behind the counter sits a person staring out an open window expectantly, they don't notice you just yet. Abruptly, a bird flies through the window the person was looking through, alighting on their shoulder. The bird appraises you with a beady black eye and croaks, "Hello." The person jumps and looks in your direction before excaiming, "Oh! Hello, I didn't see you there. My name is Florin, are you here for a reading?" It takes a moment, for Florin to reply. When they do, their voice is shaky, "I...... don't know. What.. what is this..... World called?"
They seem.... Lost, withdrawn. They've shifted slightly from their previous curled up position- but only just.

Florin shrugged, and sat down against a tree. At nearly the same instant- almost as if reading his companion’s mind- Eclipse took flight and climbed ever higher into the air.
Florin tilted their head back to rest against the tree and closed their eyes, breathing slowly, and deeply. Slowly but surely, their mind cleared of everything except their magician-familiar bond; and suddenly, their human body was nothing more than a faint feeling in the back of their mind. Florin and Eclipse in that moment, for all intents and purposes, were one in the same.
The joy of flight bloomed in their chest, warm and welcoming- though tainted by unsettling thoughts.
Where were they?
How did they get here?
Why were they here?
They wheeled through the sky, searching for something, anything familiar about the landscape around them. Wider and wider, they circled, and yet the only familiar thing they found was the blue of the ocean and the sunlight reflecting off of the waves.
Distress overwhelmed them in a tidal wave, while fear arced like lightning through their limbs and sadness coiled in their gut.
And they are thrown from their meditation back into their body- now curled in on itself as if to protect itself from unseen attackers- with sheer realization:
They don’t know where they are, or how they got here.
They’re trapped, and they’re alone.
Raven could only watch, intrigued, as the bird took off, Florin sat back… and if she didn’t know better, she’d think they were settling into meditation.
Initially she only felt energies moving and, overtaken by instinct, tensed defensively, already raising her own energies– but then she felt the shift in awareness. She had no idea what she was sensing, but… it didn’t seem malicious. It even felt JOYFUL.
And as her defenses waned, her senses lulled into reception, then inspection, and she found herself enraptured, for a moment. As an empath, simply being near them in this moment meant sharing their joy and wanting to wallow in it, fascinated enough by the magic to leave her eyes widening and starry…
Until she felt that towering giddiness collapse, the stranger curled into themself, and concern snapped Raven back to herself.
She knelt beside them then, caution utterly overtaken by concern. But voice kept even, the only display of emotion in her slightly furrowed brow. “Are you alright?”

“That’s… Fitting?” said Florin, their head tilting to the side slightly.
They looked at Eclipse and clicked their tongue to get his attention, once he looked at them they told him, “Hey, c'mere. You got your pats, you silly thing, and we’ll have to go flying soon.”
Eclipse took off from the ground and landed on Florin’s head of all places; reaching down and playfully nibbling on their nose, making them crack a smile.
Looking back at Raven, bird still perched comically on their head, they asked, “Do you know of any mostly quiet places? Preferably outdoors, but inside is fine too.”
Raven eyed the bird’s antics (a ‘sily thing’ indeed), her expression revealing only a raised brow, and maybe, just the smallest touch of amusement. “Can’t say I see the resemblance… Quiet places,” she mused.
“You’re in one. For now. We… do have five people living here, anywhere from one to seven visiting, and the occasional invading supervillain. But it’s quiet out here, most of the time. Not sure how well it’d work for… going flying, though.” She pointed upwards and drily stated, “Trees.”

“Oof!”
A person falls from… somewhere, followed almost immediately by a large, black bird with a splash of white on it’s nape. Both are conscious, though the person seems a little worse for wear; several scrapes and cuts on the skin not covered by their bright, loose fitting clothing. Neither have looked at their surroundings, nor have they noticed the girl watching.
The bird gave an indignant cry, and the human scrambled to their knees. They grab the bird and pull it close, worry painting their voice as they begin checking the bird over;
“Eclipse! Are you alright? I didn’t mean to grab you like that. I swear something pushed us into those brambles…”
After assuring themselves that the bird- Eclipse, apparently- was fine, if a little ruffled; the person finally took stock of their surroundings. The concern falls from their face and is replaced with shock- this, this wasn’t their home. This wasn’t the city-state they grew up in, and this wasn’t the palace gardens they had expected to see.
Eclipse hopped up to the person’s shoulders and began messing with their hair- as if to comfort them. They brought a hand up to his chest and stroked it absently before sighing.
“Well Eclipse, I don’t know what happened, but this is definitely not Vesuvia…”

Florin took a deep breath, and began shuffling the cards. After a few rounds of shuffling, they separated the deck into three even stacks. They stared at the space in front of the stacks for a moment, before choosing one on what seemed like a whim.
Drawing the first three cards and laying them in a line face down on the table, they steadied themselves and cleared their mind.
Florin flipped the first card face-up, its meaning was clear-cut in their mind;
"The Magician, upright. He tells me there is a magical being in the city that can't be reasoned with."
The second card is flipped;
"The Wheel of Fortune, upright. You've been sent here by someone- or something- you have considerable faith in because of the being."
And the third, final card;
"Eight of Swords. You don't know where to begin looking for the magical being, you need help in finding it..."
The first thing Florin's mind flashes to after the final card is read is the ghostly monster they'd encountered hardly a week before, during Countess Nadia's... test. Gooseflesh makes its way up their back and they suppress a shudder at the reminder. They looked back up at Crona, to gauge their reaction.

A raven lands at Crona's feet, quirking his head back and forth. He "goark"s softly, grabbing a shoelace in his thick beak and tugs on it softly. Hopping a foot or two away, he looks back at Crona and croaks, "Come. See." (florin-the-apprentice)
“AH! TALKING BIRD!!” Crona cried out, falling onto their rear as they shot away from the strange animal. They began to shake in fear. “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME DEVIL CREATURE?!”

They jumped slightly, then stood and turned to the voice- Eclipse expertly maintaining balance on their shoulder, clearly used to being there.
Looking down at themselves, they said, "I... Yeah, I suppose I am. It doesn't really matter though, it'll heal eventually. I'm Florin, and this is Eclipse, it's...uh. nice to meet you?"
They maintained their distance, nervous in this strange place and unfamiliar company, though the bird seemed to have other ideas. Fluttering down to the girl's feet, he looked up at her, croaked "hello," before shuffling his wings and tilting his head, repeating himself every few seconds.
Just as the bird left their shoulder, the person exclaimed, "Eclipse! What are you-" suddenly understanding what he was doing, they clapped a hand over their mouth to hide their smile and burst into a fit of giggling.
"I- sorry- he- oh gods-" they took a calming breath before continuing, though whether it worked or not was debatable, "he wants you to pet him! I haven't seen him do that to someone we just met in... Gods, I don't know how long!"

Florin smiled softly and replied, "I can assure you, I won't 'see' anything. I'll only get a push in the direction of the answer to the question asked. If you fear for your privacy, know that I will never invade it without your knowledge and explicit consent throughout the process."
They took a sip of their tea, and waited for Crona's answer patiently. Only one question burned in the back of their mind; why is this child here?

Florin's eyebrows rose briefly, they hadn't expected Crona not to know what tarot was. Nonetheless, their voice was gentle as they spoke;
"Tarot is a method of divining, it can bring insight to current events, or a glimpse of the future, or it can offer a snippet of sense to past happenings-" they pulled a deck of cards from a bag on their person- "using a deck of 78 cards, meaning attached to each one. By shuffling the cards while concentrating on a question and then drawing any number of cards, one can intuit the meanings of the cards drawn to come to an answer. That, is what I meant by 'tarot reading'. Just, to make sure- with this information, would you allow me to preform a reading?"

"Chamomile, then," said Florin, as they set about gathering the items to brew it. Once the full pot had been set on the fire to boil, they turned back to Crona.
Voice soft and almost nervous sounding, they said, "I'd like to explain a few things while we wait. Magic, in Vesuvia, is- well, it's fairly commonplace. Anyone can learn and practice it, though some have more affinity than others. Magicians typically- though not always- go out of their way to help people with their magics. Most of what you see here in the shop is for protection; but some of it is for finding love, or wealth. Most of what I do, though, is Tarot reading. People come to me seeking advice on a situation, or answers to questions they can't ask their friends and family. I'd like, if you'd allow me, to do a reading- there are things happening in Vesuvia, and something tells me that you have, if not the solution, then at least some answers. If you refuse, we can have our tea and some pleasant conversation, and you can be on your way, otherwise unhindered. I won't force you into this, no matter how you answer."

"Hmm? Ah, not particularly well, though I can't recall the last time I had to. For real, anyway. I prefer the distract-and-run method, myself," replied Florin, "I'm sure Na- the Countess will implore me to learn, at some point, but I don't think I've ever been interested in fighting. Helping people is more my thing."
As Florin finished their rambling, they stopped in front of a nondescript door and- after fishing their pockets for the key- opened it. The shop is dim, the only current source of light is the afternoon sun through the door and a single window. Unlit candles line a glass covered counter, drying herbs hang from hooks in the ceiling, and gems of varying shapes, sizes, and colors glitter on shelves around the room. A backroom is partially visible, a curtain half-covering the doorway. It might've been creepy, if the overall atmosphere of the shop hadn't been warm and welcoming.
"Please, sit. I'll make some tea, do you have any preferences?" they asked, gesturing to the half-obscured backroom.

"Maybe!" Florin replied cheerfully, "I have lots of different things for sale; teas, incense, carved or smoothed gems. Though, the most popular service I provide is something that requires the person's attendance. It's hard to answer questions I can't hear, y'know?"
Florin turned and began walking down the street they came from after Eclipse flew away when he scared Crona, trusting that they would follow.
Eclipse, for his part, took off from his human's shoulder with a deep "kronk" and flew away to do whatever it was ravens do in their free time.

Florin tilted their head sharply- almost birdlike- before they spoke softly, "No no, it's not a kidnapping! If you don't want to come with me you don't have to, I won't make you. I'm just, curious, is all."
While they said they were curious, in truth Florin had a deep seated feeling this child had something to do with the strange things happening in and around Vesuvia. Or- perhaps- something to do with the solving of them. For further insight, though, they'd have to convince the skittish kid to let them preform a reading.
"Besides! It's not every day a stranger rolls into town that isn't a trader," they smiled brightly, though it fell a moment later, "especially nowadays..."
