i wanted the islands to have a similar cartoony look as the characters but i didn't want to have to line all of the individual flowers as that would take to long, so i decided to try something else, alpha locking the lay and drawing over it with a solid black but i ended up hating how it looked so i decided against it.

Poster process
at first i had no idea what i wanted to do for my poster then i was told to take inspiration from this specific yellow submarine poster
Tumblr media
as it shows off the psychedelic look my drug causes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
at first i was struggling with getting the floating island right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
after taking a step back and looking at a few references, i tried again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think this loos much better
i then had to make the small field of flowers, and because drawing each individual one would take too long i decided to draw out four and group them together randomly erasing pats to make them looks solid. after i just added a square to another layer to put an advert for my tea.

once i was done with the island sketch it was time to move onto the characters

Milo Redd's character
youtube
milo redd is your classic cowardly character, which i thought was an interesting character trait for a drug dealer to have. though this isn't strictly a bad thing, a dealer who is extra cautious is probably less likely to get caught.
so when drawing his character sheet i wanted to daw some silly poses that show off his cowardly personality. so i searched up cowardly cartoon characters, as those poses are not only fun to draw but often exaggerated to fully show of a characters personality.
i wanted to draw some of Luigi's poses from the recent super Mario movie as Luigi is one of my favourite cowardly character's and he had a really good scene in the film where he gets lost in a haunted forest and has a whole scene of him being a coward and running away from various enemies from the various games. however i either couldn't find a good picture or a video that was a high enough quality to get a good screenshot from but i might try to get some screen shots to draw poses from as i feel Luigi's and Milo's personalities are quite similar, cowardly but can be brave when he needs to be.

Yellow submarine film
i watched the full yellow submarine film and thought it was quite interesting, definitely a fever dream, but fun. it made me laugh in certain points. i especially found the 'lady in the sky with diamonds' section reminiscent of the LSD inspired art I've looked at previously.
the animation of the different worlds are good inspiration for the visuals when one of my characters are high.

Artists on drugs
I think that, going by what I've read, a lot of artists actually used drugs that we would now get on prescription to help with a range of problems from anxieties, to depression, to bipolar and schizophrenia, to pain caused by a physical side as well as a mantal side. Some I think ended up with dependency issues which seemed to be a bigger problem in their personal life than it did in their artistic life. Thomas Kinkade suffered from various health issues and had medication to treat them all, however, he then ended up using alcohol and other non prescription drugs to ease mental suffering. I would partly expect that some of those vibrant colours were a side effect of the cocktail of medications he was taking.
With a lot of artists it looks like the influence in their art was more of a biproduct of their misuse of the drugs and medications. The problem with any drug is that it has the ability to be addictive. Whether intentional or unintentional they can clearly affect art, but the question although detrimental to the artist, is it detrimental to the art itself.

"One Hit" Trainspotting carpet scene.
Tumblr media
this scene shows a visual representation of the feeling of getting high. the feeling of sinking away and losing yourself to the surroundings because of the high is only one of many interpretations of this scene, and that's what makes it so visually stunning. its only a short sequence but it very accurately shows how drugs feel.
what I love about this scene is the visually effect it gives, the viewer knows every thought through his facial expressions, but at the same time they have no idea how he feels as the drugs cause through his body.

Methadone
The use of Methadone is common for trying to bring heroine addicts off the main core of their addiction and less dependant on the natural substance that strength and dose can vary from hit to hit depending on where the addict gets their heroine from. Opioids such as heroine are naturally grown in various parts of the world, but are grown and farmed in countries like Afghanistan for things like pain relief in the form of poppies and the oils extracted for morphine. In the form of Morphine, used as a pain relief its in a regulated dose and is controlled as to how much is given per patient. Methadone however is used for trying to bring uncontrolled habits and addictions into a controlled environment by using a synthetic substitute with a strong effect but a lower dose. This can be assessed by a gp or addiction clinic on a daily, then weekly, then monthly basis, with the aim to have it removed altogether the final goal.
this makes me think, what drug could be used to get my characters off of TLC (my drug)? or could concentrated / controlled doses of TLC be used to help someone get off of say magic mushrooms?

Rastafarians Smoking weed for religious reasons
Rastafarians smoke weed because they believe it is referred to in the old testament as the "holy herb" and believe smoking it brings them closer to the divine. if a culture were to emerge that viewed my flowers as holy in some way, the questions are how and why?
maybe they link it to a figure similar to Jesus, someone who could heal and take the pain away from those who were suffering and the culture believed that the flowers where a gift after the figure moved on. a way to contact the heavens while also making the person feel better with its naturally occurring pain relieving properties.
or someone could of eaten a small part of the flower, and the psychedelic effect that the flowers had could of been perceived as a godlike figure.
or on the flipside, the first person who tried the flower ate too much and died so now the culture believed the flowers were "of the devil". but i feel they would of seen the flowers as a good thing.
