By the time The Second Mango opens, however, Aviva has vanished with nothing but a cryptic Dear Jane letter behind her. Shulamit is left to manage her food issues on her own, and they form a key portion of her adventures and characterization in the book.

Brown Rice with Cranberries and Walnuts Recipe
Ingredients 
1 can (about 14 ounces) reduced-sodium gluten-free vegetable or chicken broth
1/2 cup uncooked brown rice or brown basmati rice 
1/2 cup water 
1/4 teaspoon salt 
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, toasted *To toast walnuts, spread a single layer in a heavy skillet. Cook over medium heat 1 to 2 minutes until nuts are lightly browned, stirring frequently
*Makes 4 servings
Combine broth,rice,water and salt in large saucepan; bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 20 minutes.
Stir in cranberries and cinnamon, if desired; cover and simmer 20 to 25 minutes or until rice is tender. Sprinkle with walnuts before serving

Easy Dirty Rice Crock Pot Recipe
Ingredients 
1/2 pound bulk Italian sausage
2 cups water
1 cup uncooked long grain rice
1 large onion, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
*Makes 4 servings
Brown sausage in large skillet over medium-high heat 6 to 8 minutes, stirring to break up meat. Remove sausage to crock pot slow cooker using slotted spoon.
Stir in water, rice, onion, bell pepper, celery, salt and ground red pepper. Cover; cook on LOW 2 hours. Stir in parsley.

Almond Butter Recipe
Ingredients
1 package (16 ounces) lightly salted roasted almonds
1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons honey
*Makes 1 1/2cups
Grate almonds in food processor using grating disk. Remove almonds to large bowl. Remove grating disk; fit with metal blade.
Transfer almonds to food processor; process 2 to 3 minutes or until nuts clump together and form thick paste, scraping side of bowl occasionally.
Add oil and honey; process until the desired consistency is reached. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
