hi please disregard this addition. its mostly about a couple of fan things i saw a few years ago that bothered me ever since and because my thoughts tend to spiral from silly/lighthearted stuff to serious/upsetting stuff this is what came out of it

i dont actually think that portraying gene as romantically infatuated with felix is inherently bad or problematic i was just kinda paranoid and upset n needed a way to vent about it

i was thinking about wir fanfiction and how frequently gene is portrayed as being romantically/sexually interested in felix and men in general despite the only canon evidence being that he’s a felix fan (which has been shown to extend to the rest of the game as well)

obvs headcanons r cool and epic but its interesting that theres such unanimous agreement on a hated character’s sexuality who isn’t overtly queer-coded in the same way that king candy/turbo is. esp since the only major exception is gene x mary.

anyway so this poll is to see whether the modern wir fandom still views him as gay, and if the way he’s characterized/animated/designed/etc affects that perception. yeehaw

im imagining some kid in the 80’s begging their parents to get them The Fix-It Felix Junior Album after hearing wreck-it wreck-it ralph only to be faced with a slapdash minimalist analog synth fever dream feat Obnoxious Cartoon Voices and Bizarre Lore Additions with the occasional shockingly good song

if wreck it ralph gets released into the public domain in my lifetime i’d actually be pretty excited for people to make horror media of it.

theres a lot of weird and scary implications baked into the universe of wir and it’d be fun to explore those without the constraints of a pg rating.

but i just know that if it happened, the full extent of the horror would end up being ‘what if ralph was a spooky serial killer and there was blood everywhere’ like every other horror adaptation of a children’s public domain property

tbh i have a sneaking suspicion that unexamined heterosexism is the culprit of some of these portrayals, i remember there being a lot of media portraying him as creepy and deviant BECAUSE of his interest in felix

it wasnt about the potential age gap stuff or power imbalance either. it was entirely the ‘scary predatory gay man targets heterosexual married couple’ thing which is. Not Great, and the fact that most sympathetic iterations of his character were straight makes it a lot worse.

it sucks that the fandom is dead because we cant really have a discussion about these things anymore. its not like wc where we can talk about how bad ashfur apologists were and how we can avoid making the same mistakes in the future
