Big ole Michigan bowie that originally started as a chef's knife. It'll serve better in camp than in the kitchen.

Hammered out from a Hayes brand file, made in Detroit long ago. The handles are locally sourced walnut, held up by @westsystemepoxy G-flex & heavy walled aluminum tubes. Added some waxed hemp to give the handle a better feel.

In this heat wave, nuffin be getting forged. Too hot & I just plain can't handle the heat. My apologies to those in waiting. So here's a look back on a cleaver I made. I love making cleavers. I made this one for a chef. Hammered out from 5160 brush hog blade steel, with Walnut & brass handles. And a wee lil egg cracked integrated into the butt of the handle 😁 No cutting to shape, then hammering out. It was fully forged from one piece of steel. It was a lot of work and I'm dang proud of this one. Years & years & years ago, my good buddy @boyson83 sent me a box of goodies. Knife makers do this sorta thing, builds friendships, makes use of scraps & it's just plain fun to ship stuff to other makers. In this box, was this amazing wood, that to this day I have no idea what it is, (Beautiful is what it is), and this wee scrap of San Mai. When I got it, I had no idea really what San Mai was, nor did I have a clue about how to heat treat it. So heat treated it I did, and probably over heated it to no end. Well, fast forward about 3 years and the wee blade I made with it has been reground into a useable blade. Before, the geometry was more like a Picasso, than a davinci. Funnily enough, my first round challenge on @forgedinfire was to make San Mai. I had no idea how to forge weld, and got about a 30 min crash course from my competitors, before heading into the twilight zone to try my hand at this mythical practice known as "forge welding". Well, to come full circle, the wee lil knife (on the left) was my first experience with San Mai. The blade on the right is my personal paring knife, made of monosteel & handled up in the handle material @history Sent me home with, for the home forge days. Kinda funny how things come full circle in their own ways. - I love the random & unplanned moments that inspire me to reflect back on a time in my life that was both surreal & not so good. My health was so, so bad, And I'm not sure how I lived through it all. It was such an amazing time for me, that so few will get to experience. - Here's to the future, and what it may hold. Finished!! This is my take on a Fijian inspired, paddle style, war club. It is Made from Ash wood, the same wood used to make baseball bats. I blackened it with a Japanese waterproofing technique called "Shou Sugi Ban", then sealed it off with some boiled linseed oil. It needs some sort of carrying system & a video smashing watermelons 😆 The different colored wood is the one I based the black one off of. I got @blacktagmi this neat little Carving Jack a while back & I've had this wee Kachin Dao hangin around a while. We Haven't used either too much, until today, Carving up this spoon. We've been Taking our first crack at carving a wooden spoon. I carve until my arms get tire then I hand it off to her. It's being carved from a bit of butternut that I was lucky enough to find at an estate sale, of a former woodworker. It's not done just yet, it's close though.
