So it might actually be kinda interesting if they HAD been officially engaged at one point?!? And yeah, Lord M probably thought that it was a good idea both because it got Casimir away from Eithne -- but ALSO would get Cassimir away from his mom --- who I think Lord M would have realized is a bad influence on Cassimir?

Also, since Bran has also taught Cassimir some of re: how to run an estate, he hopes that he would ultimately be a help to Eabha??? And that the Callearies in general might be a good influence on him too (the problems you have with the relationship with your mom when Cormac, Fiona, and Finn are considered a potential good influence alsjflsdjfldjf)

ANYWAY, I feel like -- if we go with this -- they may have gotten engaged around the time that Cassimir was more or less at his ~best~ but starting to drift a little +++ making it clear that he has ~feelings~ for Eithne, which probably prompted the engagement! But the engagement would have also destroyed any delusions that Cassimir and Valentina might have had that one day Malconaire would be his!!! And I think the fact that Cassimir would now be set up to to a) loose Eithne; b) has a new future as the ~First Lady~ of Hanthom; c) being told by his mom that his step-dad clearly doesn't think he has what it takes to run Malconaire because he'd rather give to to his daughter -- probably all sorta helped act together to reverse any good that living with the Malconaires had done for Cassimir!

And I think it would have also started to break up any friendship that he and Eabha had started to develop, because it would be his MISSION to prove that he was better and smarter than her and when they were married that he meant to take charge of things which would honestly probably not have gone over well with Eabha!!

IDK if it was serious enough that a date was set, but even so it probably got postponed due to the war/invasion and then was likely mutually agreed upon to dissolve afterwards given a) Cassimir's horrible conduct during the battle of Malconaire b) just Cassimir's general attitude towards Eabha and their life together c) the fact that Cassimir feels like he is is now free to marry Eithne and claim Malconaire and d) Cassimir's blatant support of the people who just muRDeRED both his step-dad and Eabha's father

soooo as i said to kate w eithne, eabha's one of the few ppl close to eithne who def isn't against the eithne/cassimir marriage! she def isn't excited abt it or anything, but she would def do the same thing in eithne's place so yeah!!

also, since hanthom is so close and everything, i def think these two would've grown up together!! eabha was def always team og malconaire, so she probs wasn't the most welcoming person in the world tbqh!! but she was def more amenable than some of his stepsisters at least ig hahaha i do think as she got older and more mature and as he started to improve (plus she just plain got used to him tbqh!), she probs did warm to him

since they're both ~trade centered~ in the riverbend and hanthom, and were both destined to rule their respective pieces of land etc, i can see where maybe when they were teenagers there may have been some talk of a more formal alliance between them of some type, and the good news is that hanthom and the riverbend ~are now allied!!!! the bad news is that neither of these two have anything to do w any of that since its godfrey and edmund respectively who now control those places but...oh well alkjsdfkjldskjf

anyway!! my point is they probs had both personal and political reasons to get to know each other!! and i can see where there may also have been some talk, at least between lord calleary and bran, abt the potential of cassimir potentially marrying one of the callearies, even?

"Good morning, Roisin," Cassimir's good mood from the days before had continued into today -- even as he spent this dreary afternoon holed up in his study. He had much rather have been at Eithne's side. He wished to spend every moment with her, but as it was, their engagement had not been announced to anyone.

Her acceptance of his proposal had given him a newfound purpose and something to focus his energies towards. She wanted to oversee a prosperous Malconaire with him and even Cassimir knew that there would need to be swift and drastic changes made to the way the place had been run to ensure this. To this end, he had begun by going over the accounts of the estate.

It was clear, even to him, that both himself and his mother would have to limit their spending for a time. It was a sacrifice he was willing to make, but he knew that it would be yet another blow to his mother during this transitional time. In the end, he thought, it would all be for the better.

He was distracted, but not angered, by the interruption by his youngest step-sister. Originally, he might have been irritated by her disruption of his schedule, but he had a rather important reason to secure himself some new clothes and any task that needed to be completed before his wedding, took priority.

But when she spoke of his upcoming wedding, Cassimir's eyes flicked up from his desk to meet her's. He did not realize that Eithne had told her sisters yet, and he confessed that he had not expected them to be quite so cheerful about it. Aoife, perhaps, but not the others.

"So you have been informed?" Cassimir asked, arching an eyebrow. "Are you happy to hear of it?" He found himself asking. "Will you wish your brother well on this occasion, dear sister?" He rose from where he sat at his desk.

If her good mood was her attempts to mend the bridge between them, he would happily agree to it, for Eithne's sake. "I hope you know that we shall all be much happier after this," He ventured, "I shall swear to it."

Cassimir had once hoped that Roisin and Brigit would soon marry and be sent away, but he would not be quite so hasty to get rid of Roisin if she approved to be this agreeable. He knew that it would be a great deal to Eithne to still have her sisters about her, and Cassimir was not so blind to Roisin's talents to ignore that she practically paid for her own room and board if she were to continue her role as their seamstress.

Especially, he thought, in the next few years as Eithne came into her role as Lady of Malconaire. And surely there would be children to soon to follow ...

Suspicion | Roisin & Cassimir

"I have no inspiration," Rosie had whined to Cillian earlier that morning, leaning against the kitchen counter, her chin supported by both hands in a vision of frustrated contemplation. "Every practical joke I can think of, we've already pulled off against him."

"Chin up, Malconaire," teased Cillian, sipping some water. "The next egregious thing he does, boom, instant inspiration, I guarantee it. Your muse will not fail you: he's too much of a...Well," Cillian arched his brows. "I shouldn't say in front of a lady."

"That's it!"

"There she is!"

"No, Cillian, that's the issue!" Rosie's hands fell from her face. She pushed off against the counter to her feet, snapping as she did. "That's it! He...Cassimir hasn't done anything particularly egregious in some time, has he?"

Cillian frowned. "What? That doesn't seem right..."

"No, think about it, Cillian! He's been in a...I daresay, he's been almost...happy...I even saw him smile the other day -- unsolicited. He didn't know anyone was looking! He just...smiled!"

"Gross."

"No, don't you see! Something's afoot. He's planning something. Something horrible."

"Oh," whispered Cillian, and passed a hand across his face. "Well, that's a worrisome thought--"

"I need to get to the bottom of this."

"No! No, Rosie, you leave this one to me. Leave everything to me," he added, shrugging back into his coat (the day was murky with rain).

"Where are you going?"

"I--the woods."

Rosie placed her hands on her hips. "You're going to the woods?"

He shrugged. "I'm going to the woods."

"In this weather. To...?"

"Think! Listen, while I'm there, Rosie, you just go about your day as you usually would. Let's not...tip him off. Got it? Let's just...keep our heads, right?"

"You want to keep your head?"

"...Yes? Look, just let me handle this, all right?" he said, coming forward and taking her hand. His look was earnest.

Rosie sighed, letting her other hand drop from her hip. "Fine, I'll keep my head. But I want to know what's going on!"

"Of course. We'll figure this out. Promise. Just...go about your day."

"You know I have to see him today, right? He wants some new clothes made, or something."

"He does?"

Rosie shrugged. "I assume that's what he wants?"

"All right, all right, just...put it out of your head for now, right? We'll talk when I get back, all right?"

"...From the woods?"

He sighed. "From the woods."

Rosie huffed. "Fine."

"That's my girl," he said, and kissed her cheek, and he was gone.

Gathering up her spare fabric, Rosie heaved it into her arms. She'd meant to go directly to the attic to finish up some sewing Valentina had ordered, she truly did...but her father's study door was open...and Cassimir was inside.

Stowing her parcel by the door, she slipped inside. It wouldn't hurt to...simply be there, she was sure. Maybe to ask some innocent questions. He was her brother, after all, and as much reverence as any Malconaire gave to the woods outside the house, Roisin couldn't imagine what they might inspire that the great oak that burst through their very ceiling could not, particularly during a rainstorm.

"Good morning, Cassimir," began Roisin, as cheerily as she might. They weren't scheduled to meet until the evening when, presumably, she'd finished her other work, and it was certainly true that Roisin didn't generally seek out Cassimir, but...Maybe this once. She had to know!

"I had a free moment and wondered if you wanted to discuss...designs. That way maybe I can have some ready to present when we meet tonight..."

She rounded the doorway, standing fully inside, now. Outside the world was filled with fog and a torrential downpour, but this room felt snug and cozy with the fire cheerily licking upwards and a steaming cup of something or other on the desk, and candles dotting every surface so it might be bright enough to read and write in the gloom of heavy rain.

"Goodness, it certainly is coming down out there, isn't it?" she paused, rubbed her arm. "Papa loved days like this in here. Said they were made for being snug in one's snug," she giggled. "But...you know that..."

She shook her head as if to dispel those more pleasant memories. "Is there anything I can fetch you before we begin?"

What was going on with him? Had something happened at the ball? Gods! Had Guinevere finally caved to his proposals? Were they about to have Malconaire back and utterly to themselves again? Surely Valentina wouldn't remain here if she could be living in a palace! And Cassimir would have to attend to his bride...A wave of warmth washed over her.

She paused again. "Cassimir...I've heard a rumor about you," she said at last, biting her lip. It was a lie but...it was a white lie, certainly, wasn't it? "I've heard...that you're to be married. Soon. Is...is it true?"

the servants are all terrified of him, as he can occasionally fly into violent fits of anger when he is truly upset (thankfully, he tends to damage property over people and has yet to strike any of them -- although there have certainly been close calls)

one day, his step-father's lands will pass to him, but they will not truly be his until he marries

honestly better with managing money than his mom, so the estate will probably be in better shape when he is in charge

however, he will likely be a cruel and unkind master to his servants who he believes are (mostly) beneath his notice and will only truly respond to such behavior

has been in love with eithne for years -- despite her being his step-sister -- and means to marry her one day

on this, he and his mother completely disagree, as she wishes him to marry guinevere varmont and one day be king as he was always meant to be

while the allure of a crown is appealing to him, he'd give it up if it meant eithne would be his wife and he has no interest in pursuing guinevere, as long as eithne is an option

cassimir is as kind as he knows how to be towards those he loves and he is very slow to anger when they are around (he always has a kind word for eithne and his mother, both)

he is often frustrated with eithne's sisters, however, but he does try to be civil towards them for eithne's sake

Okay, so given this .... I feel like Cassimir probably thinks that they are legit friends? Not many people treat Cassimir this way and ngl he probably wouldn't even pick up on the fact that Godfrey doesn't actually like him and is only playing nice because he doesn't know if Cassimir will ever prove useful to him later!!! (In a lot of ways, Godfrey is treating him how he expects everyone to treat him and so he's just so willing to buy into it!!!)

Also, while I DO think that there is some level of jealously on Cassimir's part re: Godfrey, ngl, I think all of that is outshone by the fact that Cassimir ALSO thinks that he will be able to use his connection to Godfrey to his own advantage!! Cassimir also hopes that one day, his sister will marry Roderick but he's also down with the idea that maybe she might marry Edmund, instead, especially if this friendship with Godfrey continues to go well and then he'd feel like they really have the Calanion faction "in his pocket", so I can see where Cassimir would throw in his support to team Edmund, too, down the line??? Especially if this friendship continues to go well??

And given all of this, I think that Cassimir would treat Godfrey pretty well! He might get a lil moody sometimes when he feels a little jealous/insignificant next to Godfrey, but most of the time I think he would have enough awareness to keep those emotions to himself because he doesn't wanna mess things up.

(As a side note I think having "genuine" friendship would mean a lot to Cassimir and idk whether to laugh or cry at that alsdjflasdfj

honestly i feel like godfrey probs frankly thinks that cassimir is accidentally hilarious, and like he'd be super easy to manipulate, but alas he has absolutely nothing that godfrey could ever want hahaha honestly he's probs kinda glad that cassimir seems intent on aligning himself w either guin or arthur, bc godfrey does NOT think this dude is v capable. honestly, he probs underestimates cassimir bc godfrey has a v high opinion of his own capabilities, but yeah he's just like 'dude do you really have so little imagination that literally the v first woman you ever saw was the only one you could think of?' and just sort of wrote him off alkjsdfjkdsf (tbf to cassimir's taste tho, godfrey probs does think eithne is a lovely person [and deserves way better tbqh], but yeah he's not impressed by her would-be beau hahaha)

So, I do think that the vasilievas are now ~technically Astairan citizens given the ~adoption~/marriage situation. But since that happened before Cassimir was adopted, even if he ~could~ try to throw his hat in the ring to be king later on (if we don't go with the fact that you have to be born here that is), he wouldn't have been able to at the time and yeah his support would have been with rian.

Tbh, I actually do think he would have told Rian that he was rooting for him?? And he probably thought that Astaira wouldn't be dumb enough to elect basically a girl-child when Rian is right here??? And ~his granddad was king so???? I feel like he would have been v vocal about his support both because he thought that Rian would win and also because he would want it known to the future king that he was on his side!!!

If they ever had any kind of good relationship, it was probably then tbh alsfjlflaskjdflj (especially since Rian probably never got to know Cassimir much beyond just this guy who is here supporting him!)

I can also see him still saying things like "you should have been king" if/when the opportunity presents itself and I do think that Cassimir honestly would feel that the Varmonts wouldn't have taken Astaira if a man had been at the helm.

However, this does not mean that he is up for Rian being king, at all, now, and if Rian ever did come to Cassimir to try to feel out if he'd support him or not, I feel like Cassimir would be eager to agree to his face but would sorta keep that information to himself until he knew best when to use it??? I feel like it would backfire, but Cassimir would probably try to use the info that Rian might meant to stake a claim against Roderick to try to get something from the emperor (and he might be thinking even more than lorcan at this point but definitely at least that!)

But IDK if Rian would ever fully trust Cassimir enough to ever be so explicit with this sort of declaration, until he's ready to really make some moves re: the throne???

amazingly, rian is a person who will be happy to hear that cassimir is marrying eithne, bc that means he's no longer a rival for guin's hand! lajksdfkljdsfjk and he frankly doesn't really care about eithne nearly as much as he cares abt his chance to right some of the wrongs he did in supporting roderick by marrying his daughter lakjsdfkljdsjfk

i feel like these two could potentially be interesting counter balances for one another!!!! they're two ppl who simultaneously are and are ~not astairan, and they're two ppl who truly feel they're the guy who ought to be in charge of it (tho that last's smth they do share w roderick ;ajsldkjfklsdf what a trio!!!)

all this being said tho i don't think rian thinks much of cassimir tbqh hahaha he just sees him as some dude who lets valentina do all the work when he ought to be taking care of her esp bc she's so clearly incompetent and he's running one of astaira's jewels into the ground this way!! and sure cassimir's not allowed to touch the ruling part till he marries or whatever but rian is like 'surely you can imagine some way around that' etc like!! rian's like 'i got kicked out of my kingsmoot but i came back! you can do it too!' basically lakjsdfkjdsf (rian is NOT stopping to think abt how his method of come back was objectively HORRIBLE in this context!!!!! lakjsdfkjsdf)

but all this being said, i do think he's tryna cultivate a relatinship w him for a couple reasons!!!!

he means to make a run for the throne one way or another (steward, emperor, king, whatever it takes!) and he wants support when he does that

even just as stewart of lorcan, he wants working relationships w the local lords in order to help facilitate things there etc

he's aware of the lorcan/malconaire ties and believes this can serve both the above goals

so yeah!!! he might not think much of cassimir but that's internal monologue stuff!!! alkjsdfkjdsf and in general he wants a working relationship w him!!!! however, that might be different if he knows cassimir wants lorcan? do you think that's smth he would be aware of?

I do think that Tristan has probably heard bad things about him from Edmund, but Tristan probably also knows that Edmund tends to be more judgemental than he is, too. I do think that Cassimir would also be trying to remain on the good side of the Calainons, for obvious reasons, so he would definitely be on his best behavior around them!

Also, Cassimir is secretly #teamguin because he (incorrectly) believes that he can use that one to his advantage one day, but I'm realizing that he is definitely #teamedmund next (because of his dislike of arthur). Also, while I do think he likes the idea that Guin would be more easily influenced because she's a woman, he would just generally feel safer with a man on the throne #facepalm

All of this is to say, is that he would definitely be on his best behavior around Tristan and try to get on his good side .... but yeah, I doubt he knows about Tristan's feelings for Eithne, but if he ever did suspect them, that would get in the way of Cassimir playing nice?? I think if he was more secure in his relationship, he'd kinda like other guys getting jealous/pining over his wife-to-be, but deep down he's wayyyy too insecure for that and would fear that Eithne would want to leave him for them lajdfldsfj

Still, I don't see these two being great friends at all -- especially since Cassimir on his best behavior is still being a total dick!!! He'd probably also try to bond with Tristan over like .... talking badly about the Staffords or something #failure

tristan is really torn about this whole wedding thing bc on one hand he wants eithne to have whatever she wants, and that seems to be cassimir rn, but also like!!!!!! he can't help be jealous ngl!!!!! annnnd i think he also gets bad vibes from cassimir no lie like...he's a bodyguard to a dude who gets a lot of assassination attempts like...i feel like he gets instincts abt ppl by now, and i feel like he's like 'cassimir aint it' basically lkajsdkjflkjdsf but he also then reminds himself that it is not ~his opinion that matters!!!!! and honestly he ~knows he's jealous and i do think he questions how objective he is in this assessment, honestly!!! however, if edmund ever talks to him abt malconaire (?), im guessing ~his reports aren't exactly glowing abt him

so yeah! tristan is def in this weird situation tryna tow the balance between being a good and honorable knight who judges ppl on their merit not hearsay or speculation or CERTAINLY jealousy but also he just has this gut feeling that cassimir is a dick and!!!!! it sucks bc eithne deserves the whole wide world and instead she's getting saddled w cassimir and he aint abt that lakjsfkljsdfjk

"Hmm, of course," The sarcasm was heavy in Cassimir's voice. Cassimir knew well enough that Rian Stafford had no more desire to solicit Cormac's advice as Roderick Varmont. Still, he had always been encouraging of this particular delusion of Cormac's and even though his response had been less than genuine, he doubted that Cormac would pick up on that.

He never had before.

"I well know the duties of a great lord," He added, "If it is a inconvenient time, I would be happy to wait."

It rarely ever suited Cassimir to wait upon Cormac Calleary. In truth, it had almost always been the other way around. But when it came to his relationship with Rian Stafford, Cassimir knew only too well that the more exposure Rian had to Cormac, the more likely he would be to give up his post. Yes, Cormac Calleary's position here was supposed to be temporary and perhaps Rian Stafford would console himself with this fact, but every man had his limits.

And if Rian Stafford were to leave Lorcan, who better than to be its new lord than Lord Malconaire, himself? Lord Calleary would certainly vouch for him ...

"No, it is not the Imperial Princess's whose hand I have won," He replied, the irritation in his voice was now very apparent -- perhaps even Cormac would register it. He sounded just like his mother -- always assuming that he would (and should!) chose power of matters of the heart.

He'd just thought that perhaps Cormac, at least, had been listening.

"It is Lady Eithne Malconaire. She is to be my wife, Cormac, and I shall be happier with her than I ever could be without. An Imperial throne holds no sway upon my heart, but Eithne does." He shot Cormac a glance.

"You will be happy for me." It was not a question.

Engagements | Cassimir & Cormac

Cassimir was not often visibly anxious for the arrival of Lord Calleary. While he privately craved the affirmations of his own greatness that Cormac was only ever too willing to provide, even Cassimir found he had his limits when it came to being in his company. He'd found early on in their friendship that a little of Cormac Calleary went a long way and if he did not have any particular use for him on any given day, Cassimir was almost as likely to avoid his company as anyone else.

However, today presented a unique situation in which Cassimir found himself eagerly awaiting Cormac's visit.

One would not have known this, however, from his greeting.

"Where have you been?" Cassimir demanded, as though Cormac was his own to command and not a lord in his own right. He did not like to be kept waiting -- especially by Cormac who he had come to assume should always be at his beck and call, "I have news that I am eager for you to hear."

He had barely admitted it to himself as to why he was so eager -- for the reasons behind him summoning Cormac Calleary to Malconaire that day was not something he was particularly proud of. The short of it was this: there was no one else in Cassimir's acquaintance who would be happy to hear of his engagement to Eithne Malconaire.

Cormac Calleary was the only person in the entire world who would offer him a genuine congratulations.

"Yes, allowed to rest," Cassimir did not appreciated her tone. She meant to come here and command him? Did she not know that all he must do is ask, and this kingdom might one day, be his? Guinevere and Cassandra Varmont both had had eyes for him last night. If he had wanted their hands, he might have had them.

But he supposed he must expect as much from her. Especially now. She was grasping for any sense of the power she once held. The last of it had been stripped from her, last night, for all the land to see. And if she thought he would still bow to her, she was gravely mistaken.

"You claim to be her friend, my lady," He spoke her new title as though it was a curse. He hoped she liked hearing it, for it was more respect than she deserved. "Lady Aoife tires easily of crowds and such gatherings. She only came as a favor to my dear mother and to show the Emperor that he has the full support of the entire House of Malconaire. I am sure evenings festivities were over exciting for her and I will not see her disturbed."

He said all of this, as though he did not allow her to rise everyday before the sun to wash the floor he walked upon and dirtied with his boots. He said all of this, as though he would not have expected her to do just that this very morning, if they had returned home.

"It does not matter whether or not they feel they must grant me their position. I am Lord Malconaire," He stated, "And they are female members of my household. They shall do as I say. I will not trouble with them concerns that are better left to my own hands. Things are changing here in Astaira, my lady, and the sooner you accept how things are, the happier you shall be."

Headaches || Cassimir + Aria

Aria's head was pounding.

"Just stay in bed," Eilia insisted as Aria, herself, dragged a brush through her hair in attempt to look somewhat less like a wild woman. "No one is expecting you to be out socializing with the guest after everything that happened last night."

"I assume you're referring to the Emperor's announcement and not my drunken wanderings around the castle?" Aria's response was slightly more curt than she meant it to be and she turned to look at her sister. "I'm sorry. I'm not myself this morning."

"Which is precisely why you should just go back to bed and rest," Eilia countered as Aria stood, making her way slowly towards the door.

"I barely spoke with Aoife last night thanks to everything that happened," Aria informed Eilia, finally explaining exactly why she was so insistent on being dressed and out of their quarters so early. That alone seemed to be enough of an explanation as Eilia just nodded in response as Aria slipped out into the hallway.

While she most often ignored the servants that had arrived with the Varmonts, preferring to only interact with the Astairans she knew well, none seemed to be about today. After wandering the halls for a quarter of an hour (her headache only growing worse by the minute) she finally stopped a passing servant.

"Where are the Malconaires staying?" she asked a servant that was hurrying past her down the hall. He stopped, turning back to her.

"I beg your pardon, Your Hi--" he stopped short. "Uhm... Lady Aria?"

The servant, obviously able to pick up her displeasure, stammered out an explanation of where the Malconaires had spend the night before scurrying off. Aria made her way to the rooms, wondering why on earth any of the Varmonts would allow the four sisters-- who they seemed to visit so often, she'd learned-- to stay in this rather dour part of the castle.

After knocking on the door and having Cassimir answer, it was immediately clear that the servant had sent her to the wrong set of Malconaires.

"Hello, Cassimir," Aria said dully, bringing a hand to her head to rub her temples. She had not seen him since acquiring his new title and Aria refused to acknowledge it properly-- it belonged to Eithne, no one else. And was she now not a bastard? Did it matter if she addressed the lords of Astaira properly now that she was no longer a princess of the realm?

"I'm looking for Aoife. It seems as if I have the wrong rooms entirely. Where is she staying?"

Name: Tomislav 'Toma' Malconaire

Gender: Male

General Appearance: Dark hair and dark features, just like his father, but with his mother's brilliant blue eyes. Incredibly tall, even from a young age, just like his father, though his face is rarely without a kind smile.

Personality: While often appearing imposing at first, it only takes a short interaction with Toma before one will realize that, despite looking much like his father, he has the personality and temperament of his grandfather, Bran. Much unlike his father's family, Toma radiates warmth and compassion.

Special Talents: Winning over his Aunt Brigit at a very young age, Toma spent much of his free time with her learning to ride and use a bow, much to the chagrin of his Grandmother Valentina.

Personal Head canon: From a very young age, Toma had an understanding of Astairan values that clashed completely with what his Grandmother hoped to instill in him. (Valentina had many opinions on how Eithne was raising Cassimir's children and, unsurprisingly, Valentina found Eithne's methods lacking!) He was eager to take on the task of running Malconaire and was often found in the village assisting with repairs for the citizens who lived there.

Yeah tbh I don't think that Cassimir trying to get his hands on Lorcan is going very well at ALL but, I also feel like it will probably be fueled more when/if he marries Eithne and yeah Valentina can at least push their ambitions to extend to Lorcan, too, if nothing else (unless Sonya actually proves to be useful ;D)!

But yeah I can tell you, too, that Aine is not having it with Cassimir (it's enough that Rian is trying to take Lorcan?!?!) and honestly Aine is the sweetest person in the world until you try to mess with her kids, so Cassimir's plan of trying to develop a relationship with her son is a big NO from her and tbh she's always gonna evade Cassimir whenever he comes to visit and makes sure that Saoirse has the kids and takes them ... legit anywhere else ;DDD

I mean, once he marries Eithne and is trying to press his claim through legal means again vs just trying to manipulate a kid, he'll be less interested in Peadar then, but yeah!!!

But yeah, as such I feel like Cassimir wouldn't like Saoirse at all if he ever interacted with her under these circumstances like he'd see her as a stupid servant who is just getting in his way and likely her stupid bros have told her all this bad stuff about him!!!

(I'm also realizing, too, since we wrote the above that he probably would have remembered her, since we did establish that he and Ronan were kinda friends, so I feel like he would have known/remembered he had a sister -- even if he didn't hang out with Saoirse much?)

also ... headcannon that as little Clea learns to speak more she starts repeating stuff she heard about Cassimir from Saoirse and her mom to Cassimir's face ;DDD

"It seems my lady will not be swayed," He said, unable to stop his smile as he referred to her as his lady, "I suppose it will be settled then? I will promote Cillian to steward tomorrow and we shall see how he gets on." Cassimir was not sold yet, upon this idea, and felt that Cillian would not prove himself ready -- however, he was more than willing to allow Eithne to see it for herself, if that was a condition of their marrying. She seemed firm upon this particular point, but while he knew that Eithne could be stubborn, he also knew that she would not allow any notions she may or may not have get in the way of the good of Malconaire.

He knew that that would always come first.

And even Cassimir knew that if he dwelt upon that particular point for any longer, that he would have to face the fact that it was likely why Eithne had accepted his offer of marriage at all. But he liked to believe that there was more to their relationship than that. That a part of her did care for him ... that a part of her could be happy in this marriage.

Cassimir knew that Eithne was right. His mother would not consent to this marriage - the very reason he felt he did not want to rush to her this very moment to give her the news - and he also knew that she would not be welcoming to Eithne as his wife.

Even after they had been married.

"I know," He said softly, "And I am very sorry for it. She has had such high and lofty expectations for me that she wishes it above all else. It is a shame for marrying you should make me happier than a hundred Varmont princesses." He took her hand into his own again.

"I know it will not be easy for you -- especially at first. But I want you to know that I shall not tolerate her to speak a word against you, nor to disrespect you as lady of this house. And if she cannot abide by this, then she must stay at the Dowager House and never step foot inside these walls until she can."

He nodded, "You are right that we cannot have a settled household while she is here. I will consent to her moving the day of the wedding. I feel that giving her time to get used to the idea before I must displace her will help settle the blow. But I promise you, the day you become my wife, shall be the day that she is moved."

For a Moment with You | Cassimir & Eithne

The kitchens, which would have otherwise been unknown to Cassimir, had become his favorite spot in the house. It was there that he was guaranteed to see Eithne: appearing almost angel like against the warm light of the great ovens where she worked.

He began his daily visits out of necessity -- his mother did not believe that his step-sisters ought to join them for meals (there was simply too much for them to do!), nor did they often join them to sit by the fire in the evenings ("they ought to be getting their rest"), so if Cassimir wished to see Eithne, at all, he must make the journey to the servants part of the estate.

But he quickly found that he not only enjoyed her company, he found comfort, also, in the warm and inviting space she and her sisters had cultivated there -- a far cry from the deeply formal rooms his mother had decorated upstairs. Although he appreciated her elegant and refined tastes, he hoped Eithne would bring some of her own homey touches (like the fresh wild flowers) to the place once they were married.

Today Cassimir brought with him a fresh bouquet of pale pink roses -- the last of the season -- to hopefully brighten his day with one of Eithne's smiles. Valentina often said that Eithne had put a spell upon him and as Cassimir looked upon her now, he half wondered if maybe his mother had been right about that, after all.

"For you," He said, placing the flowers gently into her hands, "Have you heard word of the celebration that is to be held in honor of the Princess's birthday? I mean to insist to Mother that she lets you and your sisters attend -- would that please you, Eithne? I'm certain it will be an evening not soon forgotten. The Emperor cares deeply for his eldest daughter and I'm sure he shall not spare any expense."

Was also going to say that Valentina knows Cassimir better than Cormac but … I feel like they both actually have this ~idealized~ version of him in their heads that isn’t quite who he is ahshhsjsjshjs but ig Valentina does know him better than Cormac, even if she doesn’t know him all the way so …. I’m gonna vote for Valentina too.
