ooc | Percy & Alistair
I'm sure that Percy would know Alistair, given that he works at the palace? Also, I feel like Alistair is someone who would actually remember his name, too ;DD
I don't think Percy would be ~super trusting of him, but I think he would feel like he's not as bad as the rest of them?? I imagine that he was always treated kindly by Alistair ++ he has probably also heard some good things from Ciara, too?
I do think Percy would try to get on his good side though and like would always be up to help him with anything at all -- you know Alistair is privy to some v classified information as the master of war and anything Percy can happen to overhear while being around him is an a++ for him!!

PERCIVAL REAVES / HARRY LLOYD
♛ Age: (26) ♛ Relationships: Eilionora Stafford (queen/mistress), Aria Stafford (princess/mistress/friend/interest) Siobhan Stafford (princess/mistress), Cillian Frost (best friend/fellow resistance member/endless frustration), Eithne Malconaire, Brigit Malconaire, Aoife Malconaire, Roisin Malconaire (friends), Ciara Varmont (friend/fellow resistance member)
percy has worked in the royal stables since he was a young boy
born to a large family, he knew that he would need to be able to help support them as soon as he was able and found an apprenticeship under the horse master
percy took to the work like a duck to water and tbh you could hardly ever find him doing anything else bUT working
so it is lucky for him that his bff cillian is there to help him out in that regard!!!
sometimes percy honestly wonders why they are friends, as trouble seems to follow cillian wherever he goes
and he, of course, always manages to drag percy into his latest shenanigans
while cillian, however, is charming and always seems to be able to talk his way out of trouble, percy doesn't know how to lie and always ended up taking sole responsibility for whatever they managed to get themselves into
but don't let him fool you -- he might complain about cillian constantly but he loves him like a brother and would lay down his life for him in an instant
percy tends to be kinda serious and while he does have a sense of humor, he doesn't know how to relax!!! (would never joke about anything serious, ever, and is the master of rolling his eyes when cillian does)
the latest dangerous scheme cillian has gotten percy roped into, is to join the secret rebellion against roderick varmont
in any other circumstance, percy's sense of justice would probably have kept him from this -- for as much as he is against the current regime, the resistance's plan to murder roderick and his heirs is something he would normally consider to be extreme
Normally --- but the exception here is that he is madly and irrevocably in love with Aira Stafford and he wants to do whatever he can to see her freed at once
he and aria have struck up a friendship, but he knows that his romantic feelings are one-sided (as they should be, she deserves so much more!!!!)
but he can't help how he feels and he would do anything for her or her family tbh, which certainly includes joining a violent rebellion in their name
very fond of the malconaires and has become an honorary brother (he has no idea that aoife has developed feelings for him and would probably feel awkward if he did)
TAKEN BY LIZZY.

HAHAHA okay but now it is a just a joke that everytime percy comes back to malconaire, valentina ~fires~ him again and percy laughs like "haha she thinks she's gonna save money by doing this! jokes on her! i'm not getting paid" ;DDD (but no seriously that's probably only happened once but percy gets a kick out of it, still)
Okay, yeah, I think he does know at this point, btw? Just judging by how he's been with all the girls since the like six months since I replied to this post #whoops!
And knowing that makes him dislike Valentina all the more!!!! ngl I can see him even telling her off about it sometime if he's especially upset??? Like he's usually a pretty calm and composed guy (you gotta be when you are bffs with cillian, y'know ? ;D) but even percy has his limits and especially if he really isn't worried about loosing his job, he might just give valentina a piece of his mind!
ooc | Percy & Valentina
~not percy chilling at the malconaire estate so often that valentina mistakes percy for one of her own servants and puts him to work~

Okay, but that makes a ton of sense -- because if it had been anyone else, most of the Astarians (if any?!?) might not actually have their jobs anymore just due to general bias, but I feel like Tristan is like the most fair and just person to be in charge of this??? Like, he def seems the kind of person who would want people to be able to keep their jobs and would only not sign off on this if he thought they would actually be a threat!?
But yeah whoops that being said, he let a literal traitor in and one who is working for the resistance, at that! (don't worry, tristan, we all have those embarrassing work stories when we make mistakes! :D)
Obviously, Percy is not a fan of the Varmont fam (including the extended members) and to boot, he's kind of terrified of Amira?!?! I think he is a little intimidated/mistrustful of Godfrey, too, probs?? Tristan is def the most likeable of the Calainons, but I think that, knowing the rest of his family, that almost makes him ~the most dangerous of all~ in Percy's eyes???
I feel like he might know, however, some of the things that Tristan has done for them all, like advocate for them to keep their jobs and then later, keeping them out of prison, so I can see where he might be warming up to him a little bit more, but he's not exactly trusting of him yet either?
OOC | Tristan & Percy
so i def think tristan likes percy!! i do think, tho, that tristan was probs the one who had to ~check out~ all the astairans who remained in roderick's service, so tristan is def the guy whose ultimately responsible for having a mole inside the castle so i feel like there's a potential storm coming for these two, depending how things go! lkajsdfkjsdjf
but yeah i do think, w the riots etc, roderick is having tristan tighten up security a lot~ and he deffff had him bring in EVERY astairan in the castle for questioning so ~that was probs a fun bonding experience for them both!!! lkajsdkfljsdf honestly if roderick had his way, they probs would've all been put in prison, but i feel like arthur was against that and both he and tristan vouched for them and yeahhh lkajsdfkjdfs

Percy laughed aloud - more heartily than he had in ages. "Ah, that would explain it, wouldn't it? It is a sort of mini-biography. A clever way for his councilors to hide his transformation into a senile old man."
It was something Percy found himself wishing for. No doubt a civil war would break out, even if it was only for the regency. But still, as much as Percy was reluctant to even think it, even he knew that any of the emperor's offspring would be more suitable to the task as him (this even included Arthur). Or, if he was feeling especially optimistic, he allowed himself to consider the possibility that with Roderick's power fragmented and divided between the three heirs, that perhaps Astaira would actually have a chance of taking back its independence.
They'd almost won the war against Roderick's armies once, couldn't they do it if it was only a third of the size?
But those thoughts were not for now. He turned his attentions back to Aria and, raising a brow, added, "I hope you know that the next time I hear him announced, I'll hardly be able to keep a straight face and I'll have you to thank for it."
Percy was grateful for the change of subject, for he realized that, perhaps, he was becoming a little too familiar with Aria Stafford. Sometimes she felt so easy to talk to and joke with, that he forgot she was, first and foremost, a princess. He supposed he ought not have teased her so.
"Now that it has, my lady," He said, "The people still love you. They would give their lives if it meant that your sister would be free of this." Of him. "But also know that ... I do not mean to overstep, but your sister, she has their support, no matter what. She's in a complicated situation, and we cannot pretend to understand what that means. But whatever happens, whatever she decides to do, Astaira will never abandon her."
He meant, of course, her potential marriage to Roderick Varmont. No one in Astaira meant to hand over any more control of their great nation to the Varmonts than had already been taken from them, but most Astairans also recognized that if their Queen could gain Roderick's ear than perhaps she might still be able to help them. Others firmly believed that she should stand her ground against him, no matter what.
But in the end, they all seemed to agree on one thing and that was that the Staffords were entitled to their undying support, whatever happened.
"It isn't my place to ask but ... do they treat you well enough, the Varmonts?" He wasn't sure what kind of answer he was looking for. He knew that they were kept under lock and key: that their movements were heavily watched. He also knew that this intimate conversation he was having now with Aria was unprecedented and she only ever had this sort of privacy with someone when she was alone with one of the Varmonts, themselves.
He supposed he meant Arthur specifically, too, in this question. He'd seen them out together and he could not blame Aria for wanting his friendship -- he had allowed her freedoms that she had not had before -- but he hoped that Arthur would still treat her with the same respect that she deserved, even if she was a hostage.
Familiar Faces || Percy + Aria
A genuine smile graced Aria's face as she strolled into the stables and found Percy there.
"Good morning, Percy," she greeted him. It had been some time since she'd ventured down to the stables-- mostly because it was not on her approved route for her solo walks about the grounds.
She reached out, running her hand across the mane of the horse he had been grooming when she arrived. It seemed like ages ago she'd been standing in nearly the same spot, terrified to even approach the gentle creatures.
Very few Astairian born servants still worked at the palace now that Varmont had decided to make it his permanent residence. Aria tried not to seem too friendly with those who remained. She would hate for any of them to lose their positions simply because one of Roderick's allies might suspect any sort of favoritism towards the former royal family from the Astairan servants.
"You won't tell anyone I've wandered off, will you?" she asked, already knowing the answer. "I am not suppose to stray off the garden paths but..." Aria caught his eye and grinned. "Is it really my fault the guards aren't paying attention?"
"Is Aela out in the pasture?" Aria inquired, reaching into the pocket of her gown and pulling out an apple. "I've brought her a treat in hopes she might still remember me fondly."

"We are speaking about the same Cillian?" Percy raised an eyebrow, "I'm all for it, but don't say I didn't warn you. He can be quite a handful, but one I'll happily relinquish to you." He winked.
In truth, however, he had all the faith in the world that Cillian had exactly what it took. Yes, he could be impulsive and yes he needed to learn to control himself -- both in the presence of the Varmonts and the Vasilievas. But he was smart and capable; innovative and adaptable. And Percy had no doubt that he and Eithne would work well together. Lord Malconaire had seen all of this once and now Percy saw it, too.
"No, I think it will be good for him -- to have that responsibly. And I think it will be good for Malconaire, too. He loves this place, you know," Percy's eyes drifted towards the view -- small as it was -- from the kitchen windows. "He'll do whatever he can for it."
He paused, "Does Cillian know your plan? I'm assuming Cassimir wasn't especially fond of the idea?"
It was no secret that there was no love lost between them and it made Percy fear for the whatever tensions the might grow between them, but he supposed it was a testament to how much Cassimir was willing to sacrifice for Eithne ... at least, at the start. Percy had no disillusions that this would ever be a happy marriage, but if Eithne must marry him, it was good to know that he was at least willing to negotiate the terms of the relationship with her.
Mixed emotions rose when Eithne offered that he might return to Malconaire. There would always be a part of him that wanted to come back: it was home, after all. He'd only ever left because the palace, once, had been able to offer him higher wages than Malconaire could, and he had his family to help support. But he had always thought, that when his brothers were all grown and his mother well taken care of, that he would return.
But Roderick Varmont's invasion changed all of that.
And now returning to Malconaire always left him with bittersweet memories: memories of loved ones who would never again walk under the familiar trees of the forests or share warm freshly baked pies at the tavern in the village. And Percy feared, if he lived here by himself, the thoughts of his family would haunt him.
But more than that, now, he had another reason. "Perhaps one day," He began, "But ... I can't quite bring myself to leave the palace now. Not when the Queen and her sister are still trapped there. I know that I am serving the Varmonts by being there but ... I feel as though I was abandoning them if I left. What right have I to escape it all, when they cannot?"
Perhaps never, he thought bitterly. For all the good he and the resistance attempted, he knew, deep down, that they were hardly a match for all of the power that Roderick Varmont had amassed.
Percy smiled down at her, roused from his thoughts, as he reached the basket from the top shelf. "Then to the village it shall go," He replied, after her protests, slipping the coin back into his pocket.
"I am glad that I can help you in some way, my lady," He said, placing the basket in front of her. Percy was easily ten inches taller than Eithne and this was far from the first time he had been asked to gather things from the top shelves for her. "Perhaps if I ever return to Malconaire, you might hire me as a kitchen boy."
Catch Ups || Eithne + Percy
"I have to go saddle his lordship's horse," Cillian informed Eithne and Percy, sarcasm heavy in his tone. "And while I am away perhaps you might convince our Lady Malconaire that she's making a terrible mistake.
"Cillian..." Eithne warned but he was already out the door. Eithne turned to Percy with a apologetic, somewhere sad smile.
"How long are you staying? You mustn't leave without a basket to take back to everyone at the castle," Eithne insisted, bustling about the kitchen. She stopped, suddenly, turning back to Percy.
"... How have things been there, since the riots?" she asked, realizing sending anything back with Percy might not make it into the castle if security had been tightened.
"The que-- Eilionora... she's alright? They... he..."
Eithne didn't know exactly what she wanted to ask. Talking of the castle made her think of Eilionora... and Arthur. And she didn't wish to think of him.
She hadn't spoken to Eilionora after the Emperor's announcement at the ball regarding the illegitimacy of the Stafford daughters. The former Queen had been surrounded by guards from that moment onward.
"They have to know that the people of Astaira would never believe those falsehoods," Eithne insisted, half to Percy, half to herself. No one would ever think the late King would ever do such a thing-- no one who truly supported Astaira.
"My mind has been racing," she turned back to Percy with an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry. I'll stop rambling at you," she assured him. "Tell me-- shall you be able to bring a basket back into the castle? If so, it will be full of as many cakes and biscuits as you can carry for everyone there."
#Catch Ups#eithne malconaire#comment#oh yeah he lives at the castle#and his family did live at malconaire!

"You're not convinced?" Percy asked, patting his stomach -- which did little to help his argument. Neither did the widening of his eyes and the watering of his mouth when Saoirse emptied the contents of her basked before him.
"Just how many men are you planning to feed with all of this?" He teased.
He couldn't help but feel a wave of sadness when she suggested that he come home more. Malconaire would always be home to him, but there was also a wave of memories that flooded his mind whenever he walked those familiar paths amongst the village and wondered through the forests: memories of a family who had left him long ago.
Of course there were good memories, too, and they often prevailed -- especially when he was surrounded by his friends (his family now), but if he tarried there too long and he was left alone: it was in those quiet moments that the ghosts from his past haunted him.
His brothers should still be alive, he thought, bitterly. And not for the first time, he wondered what why he had been the only one spared.
For the moment, he pushed those thoughts aside, "But who should run this place, if I'm gone?" He raised an eyebrow, "Don't let my humble garb fool you, I'm very important."
The laughter didn't last long, for Percy felt his blood pressure rise when Saoirse began to recant her brother's latest scrapes. He had known about the incident with the prince -- and liked to try to forget about it -- but he had not know about his conversation with Aira.
"He what?" He ran a hand through his hair, "When was this? What else did he tell her?" Percy had not doubt that Aria would keep his secret, but the less people knew about it, the better. Not to mention Aria Stafford was watched at all times and he did not always trust Cillian to watch his tongue, even when there might be others watching. "He really never thinks does he?"
Another sigh at the thought that Cillian might have had something to do with the riots, "Gods, above. I never thought he would have done anything that stupid, but guardians know that he certainly could have lit that match to incite them all, even if he didn't know it." There was nothing so inspiring as Cillian Frost when he spoke both passionately and without censorship -- let alone when he was given encouragement. Unfortunately, he didn't always pick the most opportune moments for such displays.
"I may have to come home more often," He found himself saying, half-serious. "Someone needs to keep your infuriating brother in check."
Comfort Food | Percy & Saoirse
"You didn't need to do all of this," Saoirse had brought him a basket filled with cheese and bread and fruit -- and what smelled like a freshly baked pie. "They do feed us here at the palace, you know," He said, teasingly.
While that was true, the kitchens were only stocked with the ingredients that were required to make whatever foreign foods the Varmonts were accustomed to and the servants were left to eat whatever was left that was about to expire. It left him wanting for some freshly made Astairan food.
"Between you and Eithne, I'll soon be too fat to ride any of these horses and I'll loose my job. And you'll have no one to blame but yourselves," This had been a ritual that both girls had started after Percy lost his family. Percy had once tried to refuse -- food could be scarce both at Malconaire and Lorcan -- but they were insistent and if they were unsuccessful in their attempts, they'd only have Cillian sneak the food in when Percy wasn't looking.
Percy had long ago given up trying to voice any such protests.
Besides, the food was always good and always welcome. He'd make sure to share this basket with his fellow servants tonight. He knew that they could all use a taste of home. His eyes met Saoirse's. "Thank you." His teasing replaced now with sincerity.

Percy rubbed the back of his neck, wishing for all the world that he could do the same. He sighed, "If only there was something to be done ... " His voice was low -- although, in this part of town, there were many Astairan loyalists -- you never knew who might be listening.
"I have not seen Her Majesty, the Queen, in days and it has been since the riots, themselves, since I have seen her sister." There would be no more walks down to the stables for her, now, he thought. Percy caught Aoife's look of concern when he admitted to this and, eager to calm her fears, he added, "But they are well, at least, and remain unharmed. Other servants, from the kitchens, have seen them. It is perhaps a good thing that the new Emperor fears us. He will not risk letting anything happening to them."
But this wasn't quite enough for Percy's peace of mind. The Staffords had just started to receive a small taste of freedom around the palace grounds and while Percy certainly was not found of the frequent rides that the Princess had lately been taking with Arthur Varmont, he would not begrudge her the opportunity to break free from her prison, if only for a couple of hours.
If he had been in her position, he might have tolerated a Varmont's company for the same privilege.
"Is there a message you'd like me to give them, when I can?" He asked. Aoife was right in supposing that it would be a long while before they would be able to see them again -- unless the Queen relented and granted Roderick Varmont her hand.
Percy prayed to the gods that this should never be so.
"Security has been tightened at the palace," He admitted, "And we are searched now, and are comings and goings documented, but ... the truth is, I do not think that the emperor considers us to be a true threat to him. If he did, I do not think any of us would be allowed to keep our positions." And Percy meant to feed into their misguided interpretations, for one day, he meant to use his position here to make a move against the Varmonts.
"It is a kindly offer, my lady, and I know that everyone should be happier at Malconaire than serving the Varmonts --- " Even if that did mean that both Cassimir and Valentina must, too, be waited upon, " --- gods know that I shall always think of it as home, but ... I think everyone is happy to stay where they are. As long as the Staffords remain there, I do not think anyone has the heart to leave them behind."
A pause. "How are things at Malconaire these days? Cillian told me the news ... about your sister ... "
A Walk to Town || Percy &
Aoife was happy any day that required her to go into town. Since the announcement of Cassimir and Eithne's engagement, the tension at Malconaire had been rising. She felt ashamed that she wished to flee the home she loved so much.
Aoife had always been quite fond of Percy, with his kind and quiet words, and was quite pleased when she came upon him on the road into town. With the riots in the capitol and the aftermath at Lorcan, there had been few visitors at Malconaire in the past weeks.
"I wish there was something I could do for Aria and Eilia..." Aoife commented sadly after inquiring about the condition of the former Princess and Queen. "But I'm sure there is no way to see them, not now..."
The castle had once seemed like such a safe place, however now it seemed more like a prison. Even the people of Astairan who had attended the Princess's birthday celebration had been trapped there for a short while!
"Is it safe for you, there, working at the castle?" Aoife asked. "And the other Astairan servants? I know Eithne would find places for everyone here, once things are set right at the estate."

alsfjalsfjlafj oh my god!!!!!!!! big bro reaves last thing he said to ronan was to look out for percy!!!!!!!!!!!!! no!!!!! also, I feel like some of Percy's bros/mom was still alive before his eldest bro died and like, Ronan might have been tasked to look out for all of them but some of them died in the battle and some got sick and died after the battle and now Percy is all that is left, so he probably is really invested in Percy NOT dying (which is probs yet another reason why the resistance was only him and Kale at first before Cillian/Percy were allowed to join!)
Kale: I was the first resistance member b/c Ronan and I are bffs!
Ronan: No it was literally just because I didn't care if you died ...
jk jk
alsfkjaslfjadslfj omg though lord ormond trying to get cassandra to see if she can get edmund to forget about their little convo!!! I know you said he wouldn't actually do that but if he did, Cassandra would tell him that she has lots of pull w/ Edmund because ... she really thinks she does!!! (she doesn't)
And she would have lots of follow up questions but wouldn't push him because she wants him to continue to like/trust her so she'd do this b/c she thinks it'll help their relationship, but all it would do is raise lots of red flags to edmund and he'd probably investigate the matter further and in an AU this is exactly how Cillian's cover gets blown! (thanks cassandra ;D)
OOC | Ronan & Percy
honestly, ronan sees percy as basically another sibling!!! he's practically cillian's (unwilling ;D) twin, and ronan sleeps a lot better at night knowing that percy's out there helping to keep cillian alive bc lbr that is a whole village effort tbqh -- ronan isn't much better, bc he's ~also reckless af and a lil shit but he comes at it from a tooootally different angle like his recklessness is more LAST CHANCE FOR THE WORLD desperation and his lil shittery is more just heavy heavy sarcasm laced w way too much honesty really but here we are lkajsdflkjdsjf
saoirse: may all the guardians help me...please. i need sm help w these two.
anyway!! ronan 1) doesn't see himself as at all or in any way a problem (saoirse is just a worrywart! who ~cares what happens to ronan! not ronan!) and 2) v much ~does see cillian as a danger, big brother style alksdjfkljdsf so yeah having percy around looking out is a godsend! also i def feel like between ronan and saoirse, food's always left out for percy like he's a literal guardian ;DD and he always has a place to stay. ironically, cillian is worse at looking out for percy but then cillian can barely look out for himself ssdlkfjalksjdf

Hmm, great question! I hadn't really thought of that, but I always assumed that Ronan was imprisoned in whatever prison they have at Malconaire, but honestly it could have been anywhere you like tbh?? I know we said that Alaric arrested him and he definitely is in the Lorcan area the most so maybe it was there???? Thoughts???
(So I did re-read his bio and it also suggests Malconaire, but tbh I'm totally cool with moving that!!)
And I don't think that we ever formally discussed who helped Ronan escape, but I feel like it was probably was just Percy and Cillian tbh?? I feel like Kale might have also been imprisoned at that time so he wasn't around for the jailbreak (or maybe they even rescued them both at the same time???)
I did have that Kale/Ronan were the first two official resistance members, so maybe they decided to start the resistance after they were both wanted felons and didn't want to initially involve Percy and Cillian, but obviously that didn't last long alsjflasfj
Ahhh, sorry that this became more about the resistance than Percy/Rian, but I feel like this is important stuff that will help round out their relationship!
Like I was saying to Eabha though, I do think that Percy occasionally goes to Lorcan to visit/check in on Saoirse so there's that?? And I feel like Rian probably visits the Stafford palace semi-frequently???
OOC | Rían & Percy
thanks for dealing w the emperor's horses, man! i really appreciate it but ill just sort of glare as i hand you the reigns and maybe grunt if you address me bc idk how to interact w actual humans!!!!!!!! klasjdflkjdsf
anyway!! lakjsdfkljdsf mostly here its sadly the same as w [ kale ], re: interactions and whether or not 1) ronan might've been imprisoned at lorcan and, if so 2) if percy was involved in breaking him out?

I agree!!! They'd def know each other!!! I feel like they probs played together as kiddos and ngl, I can see Percy maybe even having had a crush on Eabha when he was little?? She's four years older, so she probably seemed so v sophisticated and pretty and smart and honestly he probs lowkey liked how nerdy she was lmao
I do think that that subsided when he got older and now he just considers her a friend, but he was def v shy around her when they first met!!!
Yeah, I'm not sure that they do see each other too much right now, given their situations, but I can see Percy stopping off at Lorcan now and again to ~ check in ~ on Saoirse or whatever and seeing her then? I can also see them seeing each other at the Stafford palace during ~events~ or even at Malconaire when Eabha comes to visit if Percy is there, also?
I do think that the Callearies can come and go -- but idk maybe they have to get it ~approved~ by rian or cormac or something idk??? I guess that is a question for Rian, like how tight with security do you think he'd be?
OOC | Eabha & Percy
ok so im guessing??? that since the callearies played w the malconaires and lorcans as kids, these two grew up together? eabha def thinks he's a cool dude, and she def asks after the ~true staffords (rian can suck it!) whenever she sees him, and is really grateful that he's still there where he can look in on them from time to time, bc she really worries that one day they're gonna wake up and eilia and aria will have suddenly and unexpectatedly have contracted a terrible illness and died during the night!!!! and it def wasn't poison!!!! it was just suspiciously ~like poison but it was def just an illnesss!!!!!! (etc) but yeah knowing that there're loyal astairans still there is a comforting thought!!! not that percy could do much if roderick ~did decide to kill the staffords but still! its smth!
anyway!! i think eabha can really relate to percy re: outwardly chill but much more turbulent than you'd think underneath it all! still waters running deep and all that! tbh idk how much they realistically see of each other -- are the callearies ~allowed outside of lorcan, btw, or do they have to ~sneak out any time they wanna leave?

"Cillian, watch yourself! Remember, man, these walls have ears."
Percy could only half understand what Cillian was on about, but he did knew that his voice would carry if he continued on like this than it would not be long until someone found them and Percy didn't like to think what would happen if they heard anyone going on about the Varmonts like this.
Percy motioned for them to move even further back in the stables, where they would be less likely to be overheard. His eyes met Cillian's at the news.
"You recognized the banners?" Percy swallowed hard, realizing what the words meant. Of course, they always knew that the Varmonts had been behind the attack on Malconaire and that it was likely one of them who had led the armies, but Percy had never stopped to consider that a particular Varmont might have been behind it. "You don't think it was Roderick himself, then?" He asked.
Oh, certainly he had given -- or at least condoned -- the orders. And while Percy did not hold any of the Varmonts in high regard, he had always attributed the battle to the Emperor. He had not thought that it might have been one of his sons who had led the charge. It was a fact that he felt all the more cruelly given the recent attentions that his sons had bestowed upon Malconaire.
"You think it was one of the princes?" Percy, once intent on keeping Cillian calm, began to feel his own anger rise. A bitter laugh, "Do they think they can burn Malconaire one minute and then attempt to court the ladies who live there, as though nothing that happened?"
He began to pace, "I'll find out who it was," Percy said, firmly. "Someone in this castle knows, for sure, and we'll find out who was behind it."
It made him sick, suddenly, to think of Aoife, of Rosie, of Eithne -- all subject to the attentions of those rotten princes -- when one of them was personally responsible for the death of their father and the burning of their villages. And they didn't know ...
Percy listened, wide-eyed, at Cillian's account of what had transpired between him and Prince Edmund. But it made Percy calmer to hear it -- if only because he knew now that it was even more important for the two of them to keep their emotions in check. He didn't pretend to know why Edmund Varmont had not punished Cillian, but he found himself saying silent prayer in thanks to the gods he didn't quite believe in that no harm had come to his friend.
"You ought to count your blessings, Cillian," He reminded him, "I don't think you will get off this easily again." He exhaled, "I think it is best if you remain low for the rest of the evening, alright?" The thought of Cillian in a room full of Varmonts at this moment was not the most comforting thought. "I'll tell some of the servants that Lord Ormond isn't feeling well and to make excuses for your absence."
Percy put a hand upon Cillian's shoulder. "We will find out who did this, Cillian." And Percy wanted to promise that they should never be welcome at Malconaire again, hereafter, but he knew that those would be hollow words. Even if the Malconaires were to find out -- and although Percy did not like to think about that, he did agree that they ought to know -- that even they did not have the power of keeping them away from their home.
But at least, he considered, they might not welcome their attentions quite as freely, which, he hoped, would lessen the Varmonts' interest in them ...
Don't Even Think About It | Cillian & Percy
Every stall in the royal stables was full. Percy and the rest of the stable hands certainly had their hands full this evening and it looked like none of the guests would be returning home anytime soon. There seemed to be no end to the howling winds or the driving snow.
Percy was about to sit down and finally take his dinner when he saw Cillian standing in the middle of the stables ... dressed from head to toe in some of Lord Malconaire's old clothes. Percy didn't need Cillian to explain to know what he had up his sleeves and there was no way that Percy was going to let him go parading about as a fake lord tonight -- not when all of Astaira had turned up. The hall was likely crawling with hundreds of people who knew the real Lord Ormond and could expose him.
"No! No." Percy pointed a finger at his friend. "No. Absolutely not. You'd better change those clothes, because you are not going anywhere dressed like that."
What Percy didn't know, was that Cillian was not about to leave to attend the ball in this disguise ... he was on his way back.
