[03.15] New Food Park on Southside

WHEN: Opens for weekday lunch, starting Monday, April 1st, 2013.
TIMES: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: At Thistle Hill, 1509 Pennsylvania Avenue, four blocks south of I-30 at 8th Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue
WHY go? Lunch on the park-like grounds at Fort Worth's first landmark
Parking? Thistle Hill parking at Pruitt Street and 8th Avenue, and parking is also available on nearby streets
Bicycles? Ride on over!
What to expect? Aside from the 11,000 square foot Georgian Revival mansion, Thistle Hill's carriage house is one of only two urban transitional carriage houses in the state of Texas. "Urban transitional" means that the carriage house was built for both horses and cars, which is why it has a cooling yard and a tack room for the horses, as well as a pump to fuel cars. In 1904 Albert Buckman Wharton, owner of Fort Worth's first car dealership, had Thistle Hill built as a wedding present for his bride Electra Waggoner. The grounds include a 30 foot long pergola that terminates into a tea house. Thistle Hill has been featured on A&E and HGTV.
Who else will be on the grounds? Tourists from near and far who have bought tickets to tour the elegant mansion will mingle with workers from nearby businesses and hospitals, patient families, craftsmen working on Thistle Hill restoration projects and Master Gardeners caring for the heirloom plants on the property. With an acre and a half of land, expect some diners to work off lunch with a 1904-style game such as badminton, or croquet, or perhaps hopscotch on the drive...
What is Historic Fort Worth, Inc.? Established in 1969, Historic Fort Worth, Inc. is a charitable preservation organization focused on a future for Fort Worth's irreplaceable architectural heritage.
The Food Park@Thistle Hill is a program of Historic Fort Worth, Inc. headquartered at 1110 Penn Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76102 email: [email protected] Thistle Hill: 817.336.1212 McFarland House: 817.336.2344 www.historicfortworth.org

[03.13] Amphibian Theater: FICTION

This past weekend, a couple of us had the opportunity to see Amphibian Theater's recent production, FICTION -- and we were blown away by its level of wit, creativity and professionalism. With your best interest we nudge, if you don't make it out there before the final performance this Sunday, you will be missing out.
If you can, this Thursday is the night to go. After the 8p show, the theater is hosting a special talk-back with the cast! They serve beer and wine, in addition to a few yummy snacks (thanks Stir Crazy) -- so you should be set.
We have some conversations going about opportunities of collaboration with the theater, so watch for that too. Enjoy!

[03.05] South Main Improvements
Photo from Fortworthology. Read more here.
Yesterday, Mike Brennan, Fort Worth South Inc's (FWSI) Planning Director, shared with us a few more details about the timeline for the city's improvement to South Main. Over the last several years, FWSI has been trying to get enough money together through partnerships with the city to rebuild the street -- both above ground and underground utilities. They are now proud to announce that the project has secured $8.4M to fully rebuild the street, including water and sewage lines underneath and some storm drains.
The street will be laid out very similarly to Magnolia Avenue, with buffer areas between bike lanes and parked cars, 10-12 ft. sidewalks, and 20 ft. spaces at intersections. Dunaway Associates are currently in the process of finalizing the design -- of which they completed about 30% last year. Construction is scheduled to begin at the start of 2014 and will take about a year to 18 months.
On this note, bond elections for the city is coming up soon. In that election, they decide on what to do with $200M next year -- $160-190M of which is earmarked for street improvements. This funding is usually allocated to streets at the outskirts of town, where houses were built on narrow roads and traffic has become a problem. However, Southside has streets that haven't been maintained for nearly 100 years. It is a huge economic resource for our city, so we must make sure that the needs of our neighborhood streets are heard. Be looking for opportunities to speak into that soon. A signed letter for example. Or something super creative.

[03.05] Calhoun Street and the Southside Creative Corridor

Tom Reynolds, an influencing man in the southside real estate business, spoke with us on Monday. Tom has keep busy -- He's currently finishing the build out of the old golf warehouse building / The Annex / working and living multi-unit space on Dagget. But addition, he's taken on the rapid and dramatic improvement of 459 S. Calhoun Street. Word on the street is that Angela Estrada is moving the whole Creative Collective clan to the new building this summer -- fingers crossed. The southside community would welcome them warmly!
This said, it appears that half of the second floor and all of the basement is still up for grabs -- preferably by a group of incredibly creative, innovative and forward-thinking individuals. There have been rumblings of a shared, co-working environment, but would enough people be interested?? It could happen if we all band together. Here are just a couple of shared workspace situations to get you dreaming -- The Common Desk in Dallas, TX and The 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, NY. Want to make this happen? Contact Stacy at [email protected] and she'll get you connected.

[03.04] FW Bike Share Launch
Tim Halden from the new Fort Worth Bike Sharing program spoke with us last night about the progress of the program. As a recap, the non-profit is about to plan 30 bike stations throughout strategic parts of Fort Worth. Members of the bike sharing program will be able to bike up one of the 300 bikes and park them at any of the accompanying stations.

The lean team of three are putting together over 200 bicycles, and they have 100 to go. [It's a bike-in-a-box kind of thing]. They'd love volunteers, so feel free swing by their office in the S&H Building any time M-F, from 9a-5p at the SW corner (Broadway side/near Calhoun).
The program launches on Earth Day, April 22, 2013. Participants will ride to Burnett Park, where Mayor Betsy Price, Councilman Joel Burns, The T President Dick Ruddell and the clan of 300 volunteer bike riders will celebrate. Following the launch, the volunteers will dock the bikes at designated stations.
Volunteers interested in participating in the launch event can sign up by emailing [email protected].

[03.05] Happy Tomato Salsa

As many of you know, our friends at Happy Tomato Salsa have skyrocketed to food fame recently. In the last week alone, they have moved into five new stores! It's time to bring in the big guns. Lauren and her husband are now in the process of looking for enthusiastic people to help them part-time. Initially, this would involve being a brand presence at Central Market and other grocery stores, sharing the salsa, explaining who they are, etc.
However, the position could eventually involve working with them in production (making the salsa, packaging, etc) and/or turn into an business admin role if needed. It's really up in the air right now! But they are getting popular, fast. Happy Tomato currently makes salsa in a small church kitchen, but they are getting commercial kitchen space at the soon-to-open Annex / Shipping & Handling building.

[03.05] Southside Urban Market
One of the best ways you can support the Near Southside and South Main community is to come to the Southside Urban Market on a regular basis. Even if you can't volunteer, just show up and meet someone new. Every Saturday morning, from 10a to 1p (winter hours) friends and neighbors gather along South Main and Daggett to promote local farmers and artisans. Swinging by is really the best way to help our neighborhood right now. [Special thanks to all the vendors for sticking it out through through the winter!]
