The story of Lando versus his “mentality” is so much more complex than I think a lot of people realize. The conversation goes back farther than just last season or 2023. The first time I remember hearing anything about it was in 2021 after Sochi. Lando had a disastrous second half to the 2021 season and I continuously remember hearing journalists talk about his failure to show up in the second half of the race.

While I think it’s always been an inappropriate topic of conversation, it’s only going to get worse the longer he competes in the front. He’s not any different from other drivers who are disappointed when they don’t perform to the level they know they can. However, even I have found myself dreading when he doesn’t do well because his post race interviews can be so painful to watch. I think it’s amazing that he’s been so open about his mental health however, sports journalism is not a very ethical field so it makes sense that they would exploit this topic because they know it farms engagement. Also, with the influx of new fans, the discussion around this will only get nastier. 

I don’t think there’s a driver on the grid that hasn’t had some sort of an outburst or shown up to the media pen pouting after a bad race result. However, when I look at drivers like Max or Charles, they have different personas in the media so it’s perceived completely differently by fans. For example, I think that Charles is a fantastic driver, but he’s made his fair share of mistakes, but they often are overlooked because Ferrari has a tendency to get in their own way. My conspiracy theory that I don’t really think is really a conspiracy is that Lando is just not as respected as his peers despite the fact that he is an incredibly talented driver, he’s well liked by his team, the grid and has a large amount of fans. The narrative that was built around him placed him as the lovable somewhat insecure, second placeholder rather than the widely respected champion. I don’t think that there’s anything that he did wrong. Just another example of the public being resistant to change and the public figure being unable to control the story that’s built around them.

this is super sad but I agree with lots of this :/ hopefully lando is able to brush most of it off (not that he should have to)

again, I dont even go here but the lando hate is insane to me. luckily I havent seen much to do with his incident in the canada GP (which I suspect is because he owned it and took complete responsibility, but he can't do that everytime and it's unfair to make that the threshold of whether or not someone gets hated on)
