VISITING D.GRAY-MAN LOCATIONS IN THE UK PART 1: THE CAMPBELL HOUSE
For the ones following on Twitter (or Instagram!), you might know I've been to the UK for a little trip, and I visited a few locations that inspired Hoshino for D.Gray-man. This is the first part of my small review. The next part will be about Edinburgh!
I also made small vlog, you can see it here
Tumblr media
I think you will recognise this place ! It's the house which (probably) inspired the Campbell mansion in D.Gray-man. The place is called Wallington Hall. It's a National Trust in Northumberland.
Tumblr media
1. How to get there ?
It's a bit tricky to get there, as it is really in the middle of the countryside. We were in Newcastle, so we took a train until a town called Morpeth (20 minutes) and then a taxi (30 minutes). I think you can take a taxi from Newcastle as well, but it will be more expensive. The taxi is around 35£. You'll also need a taxi to get back, so don't forget to reserve one.
I know there is a bus on weekends from May to September (I think?) so if you don't have a car and you don't want to spend your money in taxi fares, it might be a good idea. Obviously, the best thing would be to have your own car to drive until there.
The entrance fees are REALLY expensive. It's 20£ per person. You have to pay at the moment you enter the car parking, but once you pay, you get access to the whole estate without limitation . I know there is a sort of National Trust pass, it might be interesting if you are visiting several estates during your stay.
2. Facilities in the house (cafés, bookshops, etc.)
The place is very well designed so you can spend a whole day there.
There are a few shops : a restaurant/cafe where you can have a full meal or just a snack, an ice cream shop and even a pizza car.
Tumblr media
We got pizza cooked in a traditional oven, it's was delicious ! It cost us 7£ each.
Tumblr media
We also had a small tea time break! (More coffee than tea, actually...)
You also have a souvenir shop and a flower shop. There is also a second-hand book shop, it's really cute.
Tumblr media
You can buy flowers there !
You can rent bikes as well. The place is really big, so you can just explore the gardens your bike. There are a lot of people with their dogs, I think it's a very popular strolling place among the locals. And at last, there is a playground for kids!
We went exclusively for D.Gray-man but honestly, we didn't get bored for one second, the estate is so big and there are so many things to do and to see, you can easily spend the whole day here (and we actually did!)
3. The house itself
The house itself is way bigger than it seems.
Inside, you have a beautiful patio, which seems quite surprising when you look at the house from the outside.
Tumblr media
I won't describe the house's interiors too much, I'm sure there are better descriptions out there on the internet! Besides, I made a small vlog with a few videos of the insides, so maybe it's will be easier to understand with videos than with my broken English.

Also, near the house, you have several gardens. The walled garden is absolutely beautiful. When we went, the daffodils and the tulipes were in full bloom, it was stunning.
4. Comparison with D.Gray-man
Tumblr media
There is no wheat field or white tree near the house ! But we went there just when the lambs were born, the fields were full of small lambs running around, it was adorable.
We spoke a bit with the staff, they didn't know about D.Gray-man and they were very surprised a Japanese mangaka found this house, because it's not a famous estate or famous family.
Tumblr media
Also, I bought there a guidebook to the house, and I discovered that in the middle of the XIXth century, the master of the house married a woman named Campbell! Coincidence ?!
Tumblr media
Campbell is a common name so I would not be surprised it is just a coincidence. I didn't find anything in English or Japanese about her so I hardly imagine Hoshino did it on purpose, but who knows...
Thank you for reading this small report! Next time, I'll publish a guide to the DGM locations in Edinburgh!
