settlement / script / conscience / proper / tray Our settlement, though small, needed proper order, so we voted for a mayor as soon as we had found a place to build our first huts in. As far as we knew Jones had always been a good man, just and fair, with a good conscience, so he almost got 100% of the votes. Needless to say, we were all quite surprised when he became a bit of a dictator just weeks later, demanding to have whatever he wanted served on a silver tray. The first revolution started not even a month after his election.

spirit / tone / steam / storm / yard  The storm was raging outside all night, and still going strong by the time we got up again. We couldn't even let our dog go into the yard, as my mother was too afraid she'd be blown away. It did set the tone for a rather gloomy day, and none of us were in the spirit to do much other than wait for the rain to stop.

monster / meeting / personality / tiptoe / suitcase  I was tired of tiptoeing around the monster beneath my bed, of not being able to sleep without a blanket or letting a leg dangle off my bed just because of the fear of being caught. So one day, I decided to trap it, and managed to lure it out into an old suitcase. It wasn't the worst meeting, to be honest, and after we'd been talking for a while, I realised I actually really liked it's personality. Nowadays we get along great, and I know it won't hurt me.

killer / fascinate / noble / guarantee / activate  The contract killer I hired refused to give me any kind of guarantee for his work, so I have decided to set up an emergency plan that I can activate if the assassination should fail and any evidence threatens to lead back to me. Also, if he doesn't do it, I swear I will do it myself. I want that noble gone, one way or the other.

money / perfume / thigh / clothes / unfortunate  As soon as I saw her, I knew I should have been more precise in telling her what kind of event I was taking her too. She was completely overdressed for this restaurant, and I can only hope that she didn't spend money for the clothes and perfume just for this occasion. Still, I wouldn't call it an unfortunate mistake, as the short skirt on her dress, barely reaching the middle of her thigh, was enough to make me feel like a very lucky man that night.

lace / scramble / polite / provision / fur  Fur and lace was not exactly a usual combination, but of course, since it had been a request by one of our most esteemed customers, we were all scrambling to get the order ready in time. Still, if they ever try to get something like this again, especially as a rush order, I think I will tell them to fuck off. I'll just have to think of a way to make it sound more polite than that.

roar / treatment / term / fan / motorist  I'm not an expert, but even I could tell that the roaring noise coming from my engine would be a problem in the long term. Not a fan of the bill that's going to entail either, but that's still better than having everything break apart when you need it the most.

shoot / horseshoe / kidnap / fixture / strategic  I had been following the people who kidnapped my son for days now, waiting for them to slip up and reveal his location. Even now, in the diner, I was seated only one booth away, trying to listen in on their conversation and wondering if a strategic shot at the horseshoe fixture above the door could ricochet the bullet in their direction, if push come to shove.

cereal / adjust / stereotype / childish / suppress  Living together has not been great so far. It's the little things that bother me, for some reason, like the fact that he eats cereal for breakfast every morning. Maybe it's a stereotype, but I just think it's childish. Suppressing my misguided annoyance is getting harder though, and I hope I can finally adjust to all his weird little quirks in the next few days.

theory / man / philosophy / environment / area  You know how there is often this one student who, whenever they open their mouth, you swear you can hear the whole class groan? Had a man in my "Intro to Philosophy" course today, trying to argue that Plato's cave allegory was an actual experiment done by Plato, to study the perception of environment. I mean I know we're the introduction course, but still.

battle / dirty / bowel / viable / impact  Everyone had been excited to finally see the battle between M and K, since they were both considered masters in this field of entertainment. What the people hadn't expected was a battle so dirty that it even had an impact on the official rule book, now outlawing several manoeuvres that the two played against each other. At least it broke the world record on "Attempts to cheat in a single game".

deputy / slice / vertical / private / article  Since waiting for the deputy to do anything useful seemed hopeless, we decided to hire a private detective. We found him through a news article that spoke rather highly of his skill set, so we were surprised when we ended up in a dingy office that was worse than anything from a noir detective movie. The windows were taped over, it smelled of whiskey and tobacco, and I'm pretty sure the guy sleeps on his couch in the office instead of going home every night. But you know what, as long as he solves the case for us I won't ask too many questions.

struggle / army / spokesperson / enjoy / forest  When my parents signed me up for the camp, I knew it would probably not be easy to leave all electronics behind from one day to the next. I was still looking forward to it though, I thought after a few days I might get used to it and actually enjoy my time here. What I didn't expect was to be treated like some kind of army recruit, and getting send into the forest with nothing but three other idiots and some supplies. It's been a struggle so far.

We are back. The unanounced vacation is over.

mug / huge / disk / remark / characteristic  Even the huge mug of coffee I made first thing at work didn't seem to help today, and I could barely keep myself awake during the first few meetings. Even my boss remarked on how tired I looked, and that guy usually doesn't notice anything about his employees. Maybe I can sneak away for a quick nap during lunch.

slippery / nomination / literacy / activate / shortage  Some argued that activating the AI network that was specifically programmed to detect crime before it happened would soon cause a shortage of new superheroes, since low levels of criminal activity would all but render them unnecessary. The rest of us were unable to see the downside to that slippery slope.

humanity / force / vague / energy / coma  The amount of energy that was released when the comet hit the surface of our planet send out a shock wave, and it rolled in with enough force to kill off several thousand people in the vicinity. A few more hundred have ended up comatose, and some are already questioning if this is going to be humanities extinction event.
