Milo made a cameo in the opening scene of the new Jensen Ackles Amazon Prime show Countdown, where he quickly enters and (ahem) exits the narrative. This popped up on IMDB a week or so ago, so I wasn't sure it was real, but yup, it is. There have been a handful of headlines about it today.

They initially shot this scene without another actor, but they wanted a bigger name, so Jensen handpicked Milo to do it because he's so, so pretty.

The show has a horrible critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a fairly decent audience score, which is typical for the kind of "dadcore" shows that are popular on Prime. It will probably do well in the streaming charts.

It's possible that Milo might come back for flashbacks at some point, but not this season.

I finished Neko Case's memoir (The Harder I Fight The More I Love You) the other day and I was fairly ambivalent about it and wanted to get my thoughts out.

I think I've been listening to Neko Case for about 17 or 18 years now, since 2007 or 2008. Love the tunes, have all of the albums. I lasted about 45 seconds following her on social media and she's a person I've chosen not to follow too closely as an individual. Alt country tends to attract some ornery if not outright offputting personalities as well as listeners (helllloooo) and it kind of goes with the territory. The two times I saw her in concert were unusual, too: the first time, she wouldn't talk to the audience but instead had her back up singer speak for her and she seemed not to realize it might be insensitive to sing a song about a rampaging tornado to an audience in a town that had been absolutely gutted by a cyclone two months earlier (the majority of downtown didn't even exist at this point). I kind of got the sense that she felt that we.... weren't worth talking to? The second time I saw her it was a great show and whatever issues she had talking directly to us weren't an issue. Maybe it was just vocal rest issues the first time? I don't know.

Anyway, I do think some of her personality does come off in that memoir and may be a reason why the last third of it is rather fractured. The first two thirds cover her white trash childhood in the PNW with her rather fucked-up family. I found a lot to identify with and quote from in the first two thirds, but I think the narrative kind of goes haywire when it gets to her college years. We hear a lot about her childhood, tragedies she experiences through her teens, and a depressive episode she goes through after The Virginian is recorded and a subsequent major label deal falls through. It seems the narrative pretty much stops right before Blacklisted is recorded (that album came out in 2002) and there are some isolated incidents that are recounted after that. We do hear about the genesis of a handful of songs and how she started playing tenor guitar as well as the start of her musical career in the 00s, but I'm afraid there's not a lot here that long time fans might expect.

It reminds me of Sinead O Connor's memoir, which was a straight narrative up until the Saturday Night Live incident and then jumped around like crazy. O'Connor says she lost memories of much of the subsequent years due to a mental breakdown. There's no such rationale here, although I think Case might have stopped needing to work day jobs by the time the narrative stops (she doesn't explicitly say that, just stops talking about day jobs). I think I do relate to it, as a single, childless woman of a certain age (like Case). If you don't have the traditional milestones in which to measure time, it can kind of seem like your life story is a bit fractured, and you look up and twenty years has gone by. What happened? Well, a lot of things, but little if it resembles a conventional narrative. I personally would measure time by the interests that consumed me and the family drama that was going on, but you try to tell people that and they don't want to hear it. They want to hear about romance, triumph, domesticity. Not the other stuff.

Anyway, I do think it is a compelling tale for the first two thirds and as always, I still love the tunes.

forcing horrible “teen” storylines on joan of arcadia, refusing to move it from its timeslot (so that teens might actually watch it), canceling it when it had good ratings for the allure of jennifer love hewitt’s ghost bewbs, and being total assholes about it afterwards

never moving freaks and geeks off of saturday nights so that it  might actually catch an audience

canceling deadwood because the creator wanted to put out a horrible surfing soap opera instead and promising two wrap up movies that never happened

canceling terra nova and its legendary dilf instead of making the writers cut out their bad cgi dinosaurs 

trying to revive 24 without jack bauer. seriously, how high were you guys with that one?

I'm making my way through We Were Liars the TV show and it's odd because Candice King (Caroline from the Vampire Diaries) is one of the moms and I have a hard time separating her from her prior persona but it's not as if I am very familiar with this actress. Until I watched the show, I had never heard her speak. However, Caroline is intimately familiar to me from Klaroline gifs from this website. You show me a random picture of this woman and my brain screams "Klaroline!" I have never seen an episode of The Vampire Diaries. I do not know why these vampires get to walk around in the sunshine all day. Still, instant association. Thanks, Tumblr.

I'm interested to see the ratings for this show eventually because it's getting a lot of media attention and seems to be popular but yet it is mostly out of Amazon Prime's wheelhouse (male-oriented action shows and procedurals). They have another show coming up in a few days called Countdown starring Jensen Ackles that may or may not briefly feature Milo Ventimiglia as a guest star that is pretty much your generic Amazon Prime show. So interested to see how that goes regarding the recent cancellations.
