Hi anon, thank you for the ask. It's a fantastic question which I took entirely too long to answer.

For those new to the concept, a 'drop' is an intense emotional (and sometimes physical) reaction that can happen during BDSM, usually involving sadness, regret, shame, and sometimes dissociation. Drops can happen to anyone in a scene, (dom, sub, switch, or even just someone watching). They're a completely normal part of BDSM, not a poor reflection on anyone. The easiest way to tell if you're having a drop is when the scene isn't psychologically enjoyable, and you feel hollow, empty, sad, guilty, or like something isn't right.

In my own personal experience, most dom drops come alongside a sense of guilt, regret, or shame. Usually accompanied by a feeling that the sub is being mistreated or is somehow being taken advantage of despite the prior consent involved in the dynamic. It's a really difficult feeling to have.

The best possible thing in that situation is to go onto aftercare and provide lots of extra reassurance. Cuddles are also strongly recommended. Largely similar to what I would recommend generally to anyone regardless of role.

If your scenes are particularly rough or you engage in anything CNC-adjacent would suggest specifically reassuring your dom that the interaction was safe, consensual, and fun. Remind them that you wanted to have the scene too, that they aren't a bad person for domming you in a rough way. Tell them you like each other beyond your kink relationship, and that those roles are only a way you enjoy each other, not a one-sided or abusive relationship.

While this might sound self-evident, remember that it can be very helpful to state the obvious to someone when they're stuck in their own head.

Most importantly, a scene should never ever ever continue after a drop. It's unsafe and not worth the risk. It is never worth it. You can always have another scene in the future.
