Challenges to Implementation of a Social Media Plan
Hey everyone! Today I'm going to discuss the challenges that arise when implementing a social media plan. Here's some challenges that a company might face while trying to have a successful social media presence:
Technology Overload vs. Purpose
Sometimes it's easy to get overwhelmed with technology and the variety of platforms you can choose from to implement a social media strategy. But remember, it's not about the tools it's about the PURPOSE behind the posts. Keep your eyes on your goals and use technology as your sidekick, not the main act!
Mass Collaboration
Mass collaboration is one of the secrets to social media success. It's not about posting, it's about engaging with people and building a community. It's important to encourage participation, developing dialogue, and creating a space where everyone feels like they are being heard.
Community Purpose
Creating a purpose for your community can seem like an overwhelming task but it can be done effectively. You have to believe in your vision and empower your community to thrive in the social media landscape. When the purpose is clear, you have one of the keys to success!
To tackle these challenges:
Have consistent vision, have an adaptable strategy, and use your resources wisely. By doing this
I hope that I can help make Mikel's Wig Boutique shine in the spotlight on the stage of social media!

Week 7: Making Effective Content and Becoming a Social Organization
I have learned there are many ways to make effective content on social media and I would like to share a few of these tips with you!
Know your Audience
It is important to know what group of people you want to be engaging with on social media. It guides you on the types of content you will want to create. And lets you know how to engage with them after you post something. You will want to know their preferences, interests, and pain points. Social organizations are customer-centric. Tailor your content to your audience's interests.
Tumblr media
2. Consistency
It is important that you maintain a brand voice and style that is consistent across platforms. It helps to build your image and makes your presence more coherent. People will learn what type of content to expect and when they can expect it. In a social organization, consistency involves delivering a similar experience across all platforms.
Tumblr media
3. Visually Appealing Content
You will want to use high-quality images and visual aids for your content. People prefer images and videos over blocks of text and more people will see it if you do so. You want your format to grab peoples attention and keep them coming back for more content like it. A social organization ensures that its digital presence is visually appealing.
Tumblr media
4. Engagement
Don't neglect your audience! Reply to their comments, give them the content they want, and get them engaged with polls and sharing their content as well. You will be quick to lose your following if it seems like you aren't listening to or responding to their wants and posts. In a social organization, engagement includes listening to customers, responding to feedback, and involving the audience in decision-making processes or polls.
Tumblr media
5. Posting Times/ Make a Schedule
There are many Apps out there that can help you create a content calendar that posts regularly without you having to be glued to the internet. You can create a content library and have evergreen posts on standby for when you don't have any original content to post. It will help you to know what time your audience typically engages with each platform so you can post before peak times and keep them entertained.

Building a Social Media Community: Mikel's Wig Boutique (Week 6)
Tumblr media
Interactivity and Engagement
Making content that's interactive gets peoples attention and your audience is able to actively participate. Create polls, quizzes, or challenges in your posts to increase participation and engagement. Creating content that is interactive is what will keep people interested with your social media presence. An example with my client, Mikel's Wig Boutique, would be to create posts where followers can vote for their favorite wig styles.
Listen and Respond
You should spend time looking at what your community wants, and respond as much as you are able to. You want to create a bond with people online and make sure that you are representing yourself and your company to the best of your ability. The more you are able to respond to people the more they will be interested in what you have to say. For example with my client, we've talked about launching a series where she address common questions or concerns her customers have.
Ask Intriguing Questions
Ask questions that make people share personal experiences and opinions related to what you are interested in. My client could post questions like "What's your favorite wig style for special occasions?" or "Share a selfie wearing your favorite Mikel's wig!" and this would get a great reaction from her customers. It would also keep them coming back for more to share their experiences and see what other people are posting as well.
Consistency is Key
Creating a content calendar is a great way to have consistent engagements with your followers. It could be daily, bi-weekly, or whatever suits your brand and audience. For example, we could post a "Wig of the Week" or sharing styling tips every Wednesday. Just having something that is regularly posted on the page.
These are all principles that will help to build a strong online community with social media.

"The Internet's Original Sin" by Ethan Zuckerman
In the article, "The Internet's Original Sin," Ethan Zuckerman looks at the damage caused by the ad-based revenue model that dominates the internet. He reflects on how the funding for online content through advertising has created an atmosphere where your attention is the main draw. This has given rise to a place where your data is harvested and monetized to tailor advertisements.
Internet Surveillance:
The business model for the internet is heavily linked to surveillance. Companies, like those online, are driven by the desire to maximize profits, collect your data, and understand your behavior. This constant surveillance isn't noticed by you, creating a digital environment where your every click, like, and share becomes a data point for analysis.
In his talk, he talks about the dark underbelly of the internet, highlighting the power of tech giants and the consequences of their business models. He talks about the need to understand that "surveillance is the business model of the internet." He critiques the surveillance infrastructure, comparing it to a reality where our personal data is not just collected but exploited for the sake of profit.
Conclusion:
The internet's original sin has come in the form of surveillance. Ceglowski's talk serves as a reminder of the far-reaching consequences of unchecked data collection. It is important to advocate for a more transparent and ethical approach to internet business models. One that respects user privacy while still allowing for innovation and profitability.
Only through a collective effort can we hope to fix the internet's original sin and build a digital future that prioritizes both connectivity and privacy.

What's Real vs. What's Junk
I just finished reading an article from the University of Oxford about why junk news spreads so easily on social media. They had three key points about why social media platforms have become a breeding ground of fake information, conspiracies, and propaganda. The three key takeaways are algorithms, advertising and exposure.
Algorithms
Algorithms play a role in all of the information that you see on the internet and specifically, social media. It was initially designed so that your content would be personalized, they have grown into the main reason that people just see things that reinforce their beliefs. This, in turn, creates bubbles where people spread false information like wildfire. It limits their exposure to new information and hurts the exchange of new ideas.
Case and point:
Advertising
Social media relies almost solely on advertising and your personal information as funding their business model. Creating viral content incentivizes creating inflammatory and false information that will get clicks. It also allows for political campaigns and other companies to target people that are receptive to manipulative messages and false information because it affirms their beliefs.
Exposure
Users on social media also play a role by choosing what types of content they engage with. This creates echo chambers, where people only see things that align with their beliefs. This selective exposure makes people more entrenched in their ideologies and limits their exposure to different beliefs. People are just as responsible for what they choose to engage with as the social media companies that use algorithms to cater to what they want to see. People choosing to get their news from social media are at risk of being exposed to an extreme level of misinformation for the sake of confirming their previously held misconceptions.
What Can We Do?
There are several forces that people need to be aware of when "harmlessly" scrolling on social media for their news. Algorithms that cater to your wants, understanding what news sources can be trusted, going to multiple sources for the same topic, and advertising forces that exploit your emotions. The responsibility is on businesses and individuals to create an environment online that prioritizes transparency, critical thinking, and sharing information responsibly. It is up to us all to create a healthier environment online that doesn't encourage people to get more entrenched and divisive in their views.

My Perspective on Improving Professional Social Media Presence
Qualities of a Successful Social Media Consultant
Strategic Thinking
One of the basic skills of a successful social media presence is strategic thinking. Identifying what the client wants, understanding the audience, and selecting the right platforms are very important.
Adaptability
Being adaptable to the needs of the client and wants of the consumers is key. As a consultant, I need to stay informed about industry trends, algorithm changes, and emerging platforms. That's the only way that I will thrive in the fast-paced world of online marketing.
Content Creation
Quality content determines whether there is interest from consumers. Whether it's creating interesting posts or developing tutorials, a social media consultant needs to have an idea of how to keep people engaged across different formats.
Analytics and Data Interpretation
Numbers and analytics are a guide and tell you how well your posts are being received by consumers. Being able to interpret the information helps to measure success and fine-tune the approach you're using with your client.
Communication Skills
Clear and effective communication is critical to social media success. Crafting engaging captions, quick responses, and understanding the format for different platforms are key qualities of a successful social media consultant.
Ideas to Improve Our Professional Social Media Presence
Define Goals with the Client
Clearly outlining objectives with the client is the first step. We can build brand awareness, increase engagement, or drive traffic to a website. It's all about how they want their brand to be presented and what we can do to help them achieve their goals.
Create a Content Calendar
Creating consistent content that people can rely on will help create loyal subscribers that will be waiting for fresh content regularly. Developing a content calendar creates a steady stream of content that people can count on for information or entertainment. It's a great way to get people coming back to check for the newest content on your site.
Networking
Expanding our professional network is always a work in progress. Being able to communicate with other industry professionals, joining relevant groups, and participating in conversations strengthen our presence online and keeps us "in the know" on the latest trends and allows us to keep people interested in following us.

How Social Media Shapes our World
I just watched "The Social Dilemma" and its absolutely crazy! Big data and algorithms are very powerful but come with some dangers that are important to be aware of
Why are they powerful?
Algorithms can predict your preferences, behaviors, and choose what you see online. It helps the platforms you use to tailor your content, keeping you hooked and engaged. They want to keep you coming back and inviting friends that, in turn, invite more friends so they continue to grow. And they also want to make as much money as possible from advertising to you while you are using their platform.
What are the dangers?
"If you're not paying for the product, you are the product."
Addiction to social media can lead to spending way too much time looking at a screen and not enough time having real-world interactions and hurt your well being.
Misinformation spreads like wildfire on these platforms. The algorithms show you content based on your past behavior, creating bubbles and echo chambers where peoples beliefs are just reaffirmed instead of being exposed to different ideas.
People can be more easily manipulated than they realize on these sites and their personal information can be used without their consent once these companies get it. This information can be exploited, sold, or used manipulate them into making impulsive decisions.
So what do we do about it?
Personally, I have deactivated most of my social media accounts and try my best to limit my screen time. I also try to get information from a variety of sources instead of going to the same few resources for news and information.
Professionally, we should put ethics at the center of conversations about how these social media and technology companies operate. There should be guidelines that prioritize user well-being and privacy. We need more transparency and accountability in regards to the impact these algorithms have on people.
As a society, we need people to improve their ability to think critically and recognize when information is misleading or biased. We need the government to play a bigger role in regulating the tech industry and protecting people's privacy. And we also need to raise awareness on this issue so that people understand the risks of too much screen time, misinformation, and manipulation by these algorithms.
How do you balance the power of these algorithms in your life? Share your tips!🌍🤔

Results of My Phone Use Habit Changes!
Hey everyone!
Time to check in on the changes I made in my phone use habits. It's been a few days since I decided to limit my daily screen time to 2 hours and swap out late-night scrolling for reading.
Here's how it's been going:
1. Reduced Screen Time: 🕒 I've successfully cut my screen time down from 3.5 hours to 2 hours a day. I did this by changing the settings on my phone to limit the amount of time I can spend on apps like Reddit and Youtube. It was difficult, but it feels great to have more control over my phone usage.
2. Evening Ritual: Swapping out phone scrolling for reading before bed has been a great improvement. Not only am I sleeping better, but I've also been able to catch up on books that have been collecting dust on my bookshelf.
3. More Present Moments: I've noticed a significant improvement in being present in the moment and engaging with my surroundings. I've been more engaged at work and able to have more face-to-face interactions with my peers. It's been great to not feel so tethered to my phone because I have had to be mindful of how much time I spend scrolling.
4. Better Mental Well-being: 😌 The reduced screen time has positively impacted my mental well-being. Less time on social media means less rage bait and more focus on what the things happening around me.
Overall, I'm excited to continue this journey toward a more balanced and engaging life. It's a work in progress, but the results are motivating me to keep going!
How have your own digital habits evolved recently? Share your experiences and tips in the comments. Let's support each other on this path to a healthier relationship with technology. #DigitalHabitUpdates #BalanceJourney #MindfulTechUse

Making a Change for Better Balance
Hey everyone!
I wanted to share a small but important change I'm making in my life to reclaim my focus and build healthier habits. Starting today, I'm reducing my daily phone screen time from 3.5 hours to just 2 hours!
Here's the plan:
Limiting Screen Time: I'm committing to spending no more than 2 hours on my phone each day. This means restricting my phone use using the settings on my phone and making the most of my time online.
Nightly Ritual Change: Instead of scrolling on my phone before bed, I've decided to pick up a book of my choosing and engage in some quality reading time! 📚✨
I invite you to join me on this journey to reduce screen time, explore new interests, and make room for more meaningful connections. Share your own strategies for disconnecting and let's inspire each other!
I'll be sharing the results of these changes with everyone in the coming days. It's important to hold ourselves accountable and inspire others to maintain a healthier balance with our social media use and the destructive habits that can be developed if we don't make an effort to disconnect.

As a Follow up to my previous post here is an article titled "Before the Internet" by Emma Rathbone about life before the internet.
Remember those good old days when life was simpler?
📚 Sitting in an armchair, book open, lost in your thoughts.
🎨 Doodling random sketches, creating squiggly alligators.
💼 Crafting fake F.B.I. cards for the thrill of it.
🔍 Yawning summer afternoons exploring mysteries.

We've Been Sneaking Into Your Brains
vimeo
Very interesting video about how technology and social media is designed to be addictive and distracting. He points out some very interesting ways that we can become aware of these designs and how to manage the impact that phones and technology have on our everyday lives!
Please watch to see how significant of an impact social media has on our lives today. It was particularly stunning the way that apps harvest and save data that we assume to be private. And also his commentary on phone usage and technology addiction. He has valuable commentary on how we should be aware of how our phones impact our attitude and reactions to what is happening in the world around us.
If your perception of the world is built upon social media, it is important to be aware of how fake posts can be how easy it is to spread misinformation quicker than ever on apps like Instagram and Twitter. Social media is not real life!
Social media has had a negative impact on my life to the point where I have removed myself from apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter which goes against the worldwide trend of increased social media use. I still use apps like Snapchat and Reddit but found that the types of posts on other social media sites felt "fake" and like the spread of misinformation was too easy. It has also reduced the amount of rage posts that I see by using apps like Reddit and Snapchat instead of Facebook/ Twitter/ and Instagram.
For those that feel like they are trapped in a vortex of social media, I recommend going into your phone settings and setting a reasonable limit on how much time you can spend on apps that seem to leave you unable to be engaged with the world around you:
Limiting your screen time not only helps you be more mindful of how you spend your day but also promotes healthier habits. 🌟
On iOS:
Go to "Settings."
Scroll down and tap "Screen Time."
Tap "App Limits" to set a daily time limit for social media apps.
On Android:
Go to "Settings."
Scroll down and select "Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls."
Tap "Dashboard" and set daily limits for specific apps.
