BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund 2019 shortlist announced
On the eve of London Fashion Week, the British Fashion Council has announced its shortlist of designers for the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2019. The shortlist includes Rejina Pyo, David Koma, Wales Bonner, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, A.W.A.K.E Mode, Alighieri and Neous.
Established in 2008, the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund aims to discover new talent and accelerate growth over a twelve-month period through mentoring and awarding a cash prize of 200,000 pounds.
The fund, now in its eleventh year, will be awarded to one winner who will receive financing to put towards a full time or consultant team member to “bring new knowledge to their designer business,” to advise on areas such as accountancy, merchandising, business strategy, international growth, retail and e-commerce.
The shortlisted designers will be interviewed by the judging committee on March 15, with the winner announced on May 1.
This year’s judging committee is chaired by Edward Enninful, editor-in-chief of British Vogue and comprises of experts from across the fashion industry including Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, designer Erdem Moralioglu, Gemma Metheringham from Label, Burberry’s Rod Manley, and Xia Ding from JD.com, Inc, which supports the initiative.
“The BFC Vogue Designer Fashion Fund continues to be a vital initiative within the UK fashion industry,” said Edward Enninful, editor-in-chief of British Vogue and chair of the Fund Committee. “The shortlisted designers have all shown immense talent and business acumen to date.”
Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, added: “It is a very exciting line-up which shows the breadth of talent we have here in the UK.
“Now more than ever, it is essential for our industry to help and mentor new talent with the potential to become the next global fashion house and I am delighted that the Fund is able to do so for the 11th consecutive year.”

2019 Player Capsules: Reggie Bullock
Season Summary Reggie Bullock only briefly suited up in purple and gold this season, and his tenure was hot-and-cold.
The sharpshooter was brought in at the trade deadline and immediately produced, hitting 43.6 percent of his 3-pointers in his first eight games with the Lakers. He also finished even stronger, sinking 48.1 percent on triples in his last five contests.
But in-between those stretches was a six-game slump that saw him hit just 4-of-33 from deep (12.1 percent).
However, Bullock — who averaged 9.3 points and shot 34.3 percent from downtown for the Lakers — provided more than just shooting.
He was actually even better from inside the arc, hitting 53.7 percent of his two-pointers, primarily by attacking closeouts from opponents trying to chase him off the 3-point line.
And on the other side of the ball, Bullock was a solid defender who wasn’t afraid to take on difficult assignments, like when his coverage on James Harden helped the Lakers to their first post-All-Star victory.
By the Numbers 58: Baskets by Bullock that were assisted. He almost exclusively played off the ball and spaced for others, as only five of his buckets were unassisted.
58.3: Percentage shot from mid-range. While Bullock’s 3-point percentage fluctuated with the Lakers, he was knockdown from mid-range, where he shot 14-of-24.
80: Percentile that Bullock ranked as a scorer off screens. He gave the Lakers’ playbook an added dimension as someone who would reliably sink off set plays, averaging 1.09 points per possession on such actions.
What’s Next Bullock will enter free agency this summer after taking a step forward this year with both the Lakers and Pistons.
The 28-year-old had stronger averages in Detroit — 12.1 points and 38.8 percent on 3s — but was nonetheless given a key role in L.A., starting 16 of his 19 games.
Six seasons into his career, the 6-foot-7 wing has certainly carved out a spot in the league as a dangerous shooter and competitive defender.

Local developer plans to convert Beverly Grove structure into apartments
Local developer plans to convert Beverly Grove structure into apartments
Before Uncommon Developers' plan, LA City Council had studied whether to use the vacant building for emergency shelter

A local developer has filed plans to convert a vacant building in Beverly Grove into a 57-unit apartment complex.
Uncommon Developers, a Los Angeles firm run by Ryan Hekmat, filed the request with the city to build a five-story complex comprising 45,546 square feet, at 7951 Beverly Boulevard, according to city records.
The proposed project requests an increase in height to 22 feet. It would also scale back open space by up to 25 percent, and modify a setback requirements at the west side yard. Uncommon is taking advantage of density bonuses via the city’s Transit Oriented Communities program to boost the size and number of units in the project. In exchange, developers must set aside a certain number of residential units as affordable.
Uncommon bought the site for $8.6 million in July through an entity named 7951 Beverly Blvd LLC. Goldstein Investment Company controls the entity, according to the property deed.
Earlier this year the City Council was studying whether to use the vacant building as a location for the city’s “A Bridge Home” program, which provides emergency shelter for homeless people, Urbanize reported. The single-story, 10,8500-square-foot structure was built in 1959. It most recently housed a religious school.
Uncommon has been active in other parts of the city. In October, the developer, along with toy manufacturer MGA Entertainment, secured a permit for a 204-unit apartment building in Chatsworth. The permit is valued at $37.8 million.

Discover the 21 Hottest Bars in L.A. Right Now
Shuffleboard on Block Party’s patio (Photo by Gabe Huerta)
By Andrea Richards
Debaucherous nights don’t have to leave you hurting; the new L.A. nightlife is all about imbibing high-quality, highly curated ingredients in fantastic locations that aren’t isolated by velvet ropes. Nothing is more passé than exclusivity—it seems the entire city has tired of scenes, bad behavior and bottle service. Instead, the hottest bars are all about community, from communal tables and retro games to menus that support locally made spirits, beers and wines. For a fun and enlightened night out, look no further.
Master Mixologists Go Veggie-Friendly
Thanks to innovative bartenders, cocktails might be good for more than just our mental health—there’s a healthy dose of vegetables being deployed in those shakers.
New York import Apotheke, a stylish joint in Chinatown where bartenders don white lab coats, augments alcohol’s medicinal value, mixing eucalyptus-infused tequila, mezcal, lime, a honeydew-spirulina puree and habanero bitters into its most popular cocktail, the Greenseer, which has the microgreen Bull’s Blood as a garnish (consider it a salad!). The extensive cocktail menu focuses on housemade ingredients, many of which are vegetable or herbal infusions.
Taking things a few steps further is Kevin Lee, the creative mastermind and head bartender behind downtown’s newly opened The Wolves, who makes all his own amari, liqueurs, bitters and vermouths from seasonal produce.
Eschewing commercially produced spirits means the freshest of ingredients, and Lee’s cocktails are truly singular. His Mostly Carrots combines lavender rose vermouth, juniper cordial, carrot liqueur, yuzu bitters and aromatic bitters (all homemade) with fresh lemon and soda and receives a final spritz of “pine fragrance” from one of the many small, hand-labeled bottles atop the bar. It’s no gimmick; the drink is perfectly balanced and as exquisite as the setting—a 1911 annex to the once-grand Alexandria Hotel that has been restyled to evoke the Belle Époque.
In December, a smaller upstairs bar will open as Le Néant, hosting intimate, omakase-inspired experiences. Here, Lee will create cocktails based on guest preferences using a list of curated farmers market ingredients that will change as the micro-seasons do.
Cocktails Take Flight
Omakase-style cocktail service, where guests receive a progression of drinks based on “bartender’s choice,” is the primary draw at The Walker Inn, a speakeasy-styled bar located within Koreatown’s Normandie Club that was among the first in L.A. to adopt the practice. There are two nightly seatings for this reservation-only trip through six to seven courses of creative cocktails (accompanied by small snacks) that follows both seasonality and the staff’s creative whims.
Similarly, Bar Centro at the SLS Beverly Hills (which is currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary) hosts “Bazaar Flights,” a bartender-led six-cocktail tasting menu that features whimsical and interactive presentations. One of the innovative drinks is even made using a recipe for milk punch originating from Benjamin Franklin.
In Malibu, Eat Your Drink author Matthew Biancaniello’s newly opened Mon-Li serves an intimate, 12-person, 12-course liquid tasting menu, where one can enjoy the cocktail chef’s delicious, seasonally inspired creations along with fantastic ocean views.

Vinyl Spinners
Some evenings are made for sampling cocktails and records at the same time, so, fortunately, a slew of new places inspired by Japanese hi-fi coffee shops and whiskey bars have landed in L.A.
The cozy and midcentury-styled In Sheep’s Clothing, in the Arts District, opens in the morning as a coffee shop and then transitions at night into a full-service bar. Guests are asked to keep conversations low and not to take photographs so that everyone has a chance to engage in communal listening.
Highland Park’s newly opened Gold Line is a bar actually owned by a record company (Stones Throw Records) that features a top-flight vintage hi-fi sound system and a collection of 7,500 vinyl records from label founder Peanut Butter Wolf.
Located above the 800 Degrees pizzeria in Hollywood is the diminutive Sunset & Vinyl, a 1970s-inspired lounge where no more than 35 people at a time drink cocktails designed specifically for the grooves. Guests here are invited to bring along hits from their own record collections.
Rec Rooms
Beyond listening parties, there are plenty of other communal pursuits that allow patrons to play more than the field. Vintage arcade games, pinball, lawn games and even shuffleboard offer a chance to interact over drinks—and, of course, an opportunity to show off high scores.
The latest incarnation of the “barcade” is Walt’s Bar, a folksy, corner bar in Eagle Rock that advertises fine wine and hot dogs on hand-painted signs. The long wooden bar is a great place to knock back a beer from a local brewer (rotating offerings from Mumford, Highland Park Brewery and Long Beach’s Beachwood Blendery are all on tap)— that is, if you can pull yourself away from a pinball machine long enough to finish it.
Echo Park’s popular Button Mash also has an extensive list of local beers, plus pinball and some 40 golden-age arcade cabinets. If the din of blips and bleeps isn’t strong enough, knock down pins at the historic Highland Park Bowl, a gorgeous refurbished bowling alley with steampunk style, wood-fired pizza and themed cocktails. Or try The Spare Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt, a gaming parlor with two vintage bowling lanes and plenty of strong drinks.
Locally Made Spirits
To savor local flavor, take a tour of one of Los Angeles’ distilleries. The first craft distillery in L.A. since Prohibition, Greenbar Distillery, in the Arts District, shows its hometown pride on every bottle of its small-batch, organic spirits with the tagline “Made in the City of Angels.” Greenbar showcases local produce and L.A. flavors to capture the city’s cultural terroir, and sales support nonprofit initiatives like feeding the hungry and planting trees. Visitors can tour the distillery or take a class in craft cocktail making.
Also in the Arts District, Lost Spirits Distillery offers two-hour tours—complete with a Willy Wonka-esque boat ride—plus a tasting of its rums and malts by reservation only.
The Future Is Female
Thankfully, gender equity in the hospitality industry has become a concern patrons are paying attention to, and the best way to support it is by frequenting women-owned establishments.
Earlier this year, three friends and businesswomen opened Genever, an art deco-styled lounge in Historic Filipinotown whose menu celebrates the history of women-run speakeasies, fresh ingredients, Filipino flavors and, of course, gin.
In Little Tokyo, using spirits from women-run distilleries is important to The Mermaid owners Katie Kildow and Arelene Roldan, whose newest venture is a fanciful, underwater-themed space serving tropical cocktails, local beers and wine.
Block Parties
The sport of barhopping in L.A. used to be akin to island-hopping—traversing great distances to land at an isolated destination. But today, the city is more connected—and more walkable—than ever before, thanks to a focus on locality.
Avoiding traffic and sticking to the neighborhood lets you turn every evening into a block party. Bars, restaurants and coffee shops are moving in close proximity to one another so all needs can be taken care of in a single block, like the one in Highland Park that boasts Highland Park Wine—a shop from the Silverlake Wine team—Triple Beam Pizza, restaurant Hippo and coffee shop Go Get Em Tiger.
Also in Highland Park, the aptly named Block Party—a modern beer garden that boasts a huge, sunny patio—serves craft beers and vino from small-production winemakers. The picnic tables and shuffleboard set invite guests to hang as a community, and food is welcomed from outside vendors (on Thursday nights, vendors sell vegan food all along York Boulevard). Similarly, on the Westside, the newly opened Broxton is a brewpub from Artisanal Brewers Collective that boasts something for everyone—even kids.
Perhaps the most elegant example of a space attempting to connect communities appears in one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, Union Station, which just welcomed the train-themed Imperial Western Beer Co., from 213 Hospitality, where travelers and locals come together in true beer-hall fashion for inhouse-brewed craft beer. Sharing space in the historic train depot is The Streamliner, a dramatic bar from the team behind the Varnish that aims to offer “finer, faster cocktails” at an affordable price. A delicious and more democratic gimlet? Yes, please.

Iconix inks licensing agreement to bring Zoo York to Korean market
Robyn Turk
|
Thursday, June 13 2019
Zoo York is taking a trip to Korea. Its parent company, Iconix Brand Group, has signed a four-year licensing agreement that allows Sparks Glencoe Korea Co. exclusive rights to design, manufacture and market the brand's apparel, footwear, underwear and accessories lines for the Korean market.
Based in New York, Zoo York has evolved into a globally recognized skateboarding-inspired lifestyle brand since it was founded by three skateboard enthusiasts in 1993. It manufactures menswear, childrenswear and skateboards that retail through outlets including J.C. Penney, Amazon and Chapman Pro Shop.
Iconix recognizes that the time is right to expand Zoo York internationally, and FILA Korea Ltd. feels the same way. Iconix CEO and president, Bob Galvin, said in a statement, "With skateboarding making its Olympic debut in 2020, it’s an ideal time for Iconix to expand the Zoo York brand internationally."
“We look forward to bringing an iconic skateboarding brand like Zoo York to Korea through our new agreement with Iconix,” said Kevin Yoon, CEO and president of FILA Korea Ltd.
He added, “With the 2020 Olympics around the corner, there’s a great opportunity to cultivate the brand in our market. Zoo York is a wonderful addition to our portfolio of brands.”
Iconix Brand Group owns, licenses and markets a portfolio of 30 consumer brands including Rampage, Mossimo, London Fog, Joe Boxer and Marc Ecko.

LA will make city buses free for students
The school year is ending in Los Angeles, but when classes resume in August, students will be able to benefit from free rides on the city’s DASH buses.
Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a one-year pilot program earlier this week that will eliminate fares for K-12 and college students. Right now, it only costs 50 cents to ride DASH buses—or 35 cents with a TAP card. But that can add up over time, and the city’s transportation department estimates that nearly one-quarter of DASH riders use the buses to get to-and-from school.
In a statement Monday, the mayor said the program could “help students get to class on time, save money for families who are struggling to make ends meet, boost school attendance, and empower young people to get involved with clubs or take a job that previously felt out of reach.”
To do that, though, they’ll have to register for the free fares, and that’s a bit of a process. The transportation department is administering the pilot through Metro’s reduced fare program, which requires students to create an account, get a parent’s signature, and verify enrollment with a report card or student ID.
That means it will likely be on schools and community centers to let families know about the program in time for students to complete the steps necessary to qualify.
Eli Lipmen, director of development and programming with Move LA, suggests that Metro could roll out a similar program to further reduce the cost of transit for students in the LA area.
Metro already offers discounted fares for students, but this reduces the cost of a bus or train ride to $1, which is still twice the cost of a full-price DASH trip.
“We need to find champions at Metro to expand this great DASH program to all transit operators,” wrote Lipmen in an email to reporters and transit advocates.

Clippers top Lakers, Vucevic helps Magic stun Raptors
The Los Angeles Clippers trumped city rivals the Los Angeles Lakers 118-107 in the NBA on Friday.
The Lakers were missing injured superstar LeBron James and they struggled to finish the game without him against the Clippers.
Quite a few Clippers had cold shooting nights, but Lou Williams was not one of them with a game-high 36 points off the bench.
The Clippers subs amassed a staggering 71 points, trumping the Lakers' total of 36.
Kyle Kuzma led the Lakers in scoring with 24 points.
The Lakers (20-16) fell to seventh in the Western Conference standings with the loss, while the Clippers (21-14) are in fourth.
Vucevic stars with double-double
Nikola Vucevic scored 30 points and snagged 20 rebounds in the Orlando Magic's 116-87 trouncing of the Toronto Raptors.
Bradley Beal had 34 points and made four three-pointers as the Washington Wizards fell short to the Chicago Bulls 101-92.
Anthony Davis scored 48 points on 20-of-32 shooting accompanied by 17 rebounds helping the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Dallas Mavericks 114-112.
Galloway shoots blank
Langston Galloway was held scoreless on 0-of-six shooting in the Detroit Pistons' 125-88 loss to the Indiana Pacers.
Marvin Williams scored six points on two-of-10 shooting as the Charlotte Hornets won 100-87 against the Brooklyn Nets.
Smith with the slam!
Dennis Smith Jr. dropped the hammer on Julius Randle's head in the Mavericks' loss to the Pelicans.
Lauri Markkanen rose for this baseline slam in a big Bulls win.
Friday's results
Charlotte Hornets 100-87 Brooklyn Nets Chicago Bulls 101-92 Washington Wizards Orlando Magic 116-87 Toronto Raptors Indiana Pacers 125-88 Detroit Pistons Atlanta Hawks 123-120 Minnesota Timberwolves (OT) New Orleans Pelicans 114-112 Dallas Mavericks Miami Heat 118-94 Cleveland Cavaliers Oklahoma City Thunder 118-102 Phoenix Suns Denver Nuggets 102-99 San Antonio Spurs Los Angeles Clippers 118-107 Los Angeles Lakers
Warriors at Trail Blazers
Golden State are still near the top of the Western Conference, but have lost back-to-back games. Portland handed the Warriors a 110-109 overtime loss in Oracle Arena on Thursday, so the Dubs will have a chance to avenge themselves this time around.

Turns out millennials’ dream homes aren’t that different from baby boomers’
Turns out millennials’ dream homes aren’t that different from baby boomers’
Both generations share a taste for roomy showers and high tech features
December 15, 2018 01:00PM
Millennial homeowners want big houses with easy-access showers and loads of technology, making them not that different from baby boomers.
Walk-in showers are popular with both age groups, as they make bathrooms look appealing and accessible, and both groups are also interested in smart home technology, according to MarketWatch.
Size is the main difference between the two age groups, as millennials are hoping to land larger homes to accommodate children and growing families, while baby boomers are starting to downsize their living quarters.
Other features both groups look for include large kitchens and big backyards. Although millennials seem to be buying homes at a slower rate than prior generations, they are still influencing the market. In 2017, millennials were responsible for injecting about $514 billion into the U.S. housing market. [MarketWatch] – Eddie Small

LeBron James surprised Grizzlies equipment manager with his shoes after win in Memphis
Brian’e Miller showed up to work on Friday night at the FedEx Forum wearing a pair of LeBrons, just like she does for every Memphis Grizzlies game.
What she didn’t know, though, was that she would end up leaving having met her favorite player.
Miller is an assistant equipment manager for the Grizzlies, and a huge LeBron James fan. So, while she was collecting warm-up gear from the Los Angeles Lakers’ bench area late during their 111-88 win over the Grizzlies, James stopped her.
He remembered her.
“Every year I’ve come here, she’s always worn a very exclusive pair of my shoes and I’ve always noticed it and I’ve never said anything to her,” James told the Commercial Appeal. “And tonight, I said something to her for the first time and she was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve always been Team LeBron. Always.’ So she got a pair of LeBrons.”
She didn’t just get a pair of LeBrons. She got the purple shoes he was wearing in the game that night.
The pair hugged, and instantly she started crying.
“It’s emotional because so many years I’ve been idolizing him,” Miller told the Commercial Appeal. “He has so many fans. That’s the thing. I’m not a fan just when LeBron comes. I’m a fan when he’s not looking, so it was just really cool to see him appreciate me.”
And while Miller has seen nearly every player in the league up close during her time as an equipment manager with the Grizzlies, Saturday night’s interaction marked one she won’t forget anytime soon.
“Priceless,” Miller told the Commercial Appeal. “I wasn’t expecting that, to come to work today and I’m going to get LeBron’s shoes. I’m just always trying to make the Lakers, or any team he’s on, comfortable because I know it’s hectic. It’s just trying to do my job and he blessed me with a pair of shoes.”

LeBron James Leads All-Star Voting for 3rd Straight Year
The NBA kingdom has spoken in favor of King James.
For the third straight year and sixth time in his career, LeBron James led all players in All-Star fan voting, with more than 4.6 million this time around.
Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo was second with nearly 4.4 million votes.
Fans accounted for 50 percent of the voting process, while players and media represented 25 percent apiece.
With LeBron leading the league, he becomes a captain for the All-Star Game in Charlotte, meaning that he will draft players for his team to face the squad selected by Giannis.
James has led All-Star voting in 2007, 2010, 2014 and 2017-19. He is the first Laker to do so since Kobe Bryant, who had four years on top, including his final season in 2016.
The only other Laker to lead fan voting was Magic Johnson, in back-to-back years (1985-86).
With his 15th career All-Star appearance, James ties Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and Shaquille O’Neal for the third-most in NBA history, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (19) and Kobe Bryant (18).
James has also dominated in the game itself, earning All-Star MVP trophies in 2006, 2008 and last year at STAPLES Center.

Home prices roar in Arlington, whimper in Manhattan post-Amazon
Home prices roar in Arlington, whimper in Manhattan post-Amazon
NYC borough saw pricing grow just 2.4% between November and April
Crystal City, Virginia and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos (Credit: Getty Images)
Manhattan home prices have sputtered along after Amazon scuttled plans for part of its HQ2 in Long Island City, while the Arlington, Virginia market is getting a big boost form the tech effect.
Pricing in Manhattan grew just 2.4 percent between the time Amazon made its announcement in November of last year and April, according to realtor.com figures cited by Bloomberg.
In Arlington, however, home prices have grown 17.3 percent during the same time.
“With a household name as big as Amazon moving into Arlington’s backyard, we expected that home prices were going to increase, but because the number of homes for sale is not keeping up with demand, the price growth we’ve witnessed so far in both the mid-market and luxury sector has been dramatic,” realtor.com chief economist Danielle Hale told Bloomberg.
The rise in Arlington pricing was accompanied by a larger drop in home inventory than Manhattan saw, the news outlet reported. Realtor.com’s report showed that active listings in Arlington dwindled to fewer than 400 listings in April — a 50 percent decrease from a year earlier.
And the Arlington luxury market has also prospered, with a 22.1 percent price increase since last April at the top of the market. The top five percent of homes commanded an average price of $2.4 million.
An analysis of more than 1,000 counties shows that Arlington County and two neighboring counties are among the seven tightest markets nationwide.
Amazon had plans to build a second headquarters at two sites in NYC and Crystal City, an urban Arlington neighborhood. The NYC plans fell through after backlash from community groups and emboldened politicians. [Bloomberg] — Georgia Kromrei

Vivid Entertainment’s Bill Asher dumps $14.5 million in Montecito
The Montecito/Santa Barbara area has recently seen a spate of mega-dollar real estate closings — property transfers for well into the eight figures, the latest of which went down last week. A gorgeous estate just north of the quaint downtown shops on Coast Village Road was quietly sold.
Christened El Cielito, the lavish compound was designed in 1920 by acclaimed architect George Washington Smith. The 3.28-acre property is quintessential Santa Barbara in style — Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, verdant lawns and lush foliage — and offers distant, super-narrow views of the deep blue Pacific. It’s barely even a peek-a-boo, but it’ll do. Hey, any ocean view is better than no ocean view.
The main entrance to El Cielito. Fancy!
Unfortunately, Yolanda spent lots of time researching this place but was unable to turn up any interesting owner names from back in the day. We’re sure a knowledgable Montecito local will happily tell us how obtuse we are and inform y’all about who built this place. It must’ve been somebody important! But for now, the name(s) shall remain a mystery.
Anywho. We do know that the estate was purchased in late 1995 by Saturday Night Fever producer John Badham, who flipped it just two years later to President Trump’s BFF Tom Barrack — a private equity bigwig and CEO of Colony Capital. In 2014, Mr. Barrack quit-claimed the property to architectural designer Laurel Beebe Barrack, one of his three (or four?) ex-wives and mama of his son Nicholas.
But Ms. Beebe Barrack didn’t hold onto the spread for very long — she has other interesting projects in the works, we imagine. By late 2016, she had slapped a $20 million pricetag on the beast. After a change of realtors and several big pricechops, the ask eventually tumbled to $15.5 million. Records show the estate was finally sold in late February (2019) for a discounted $14,500,000.
Per records, the proud new owner is Vivid Entertainment co-owner Bill Asher, an Alaska native and current Montecito resident — he and wife Julia Asher (née Mavris) currently reside on a multi-acre estate nearby. That place, sadly, was seriously impacted by the major Montecito mudslides of 2018.
But we digress — more on the Ashers’ current spread a wee bit later. For now, we know some of y’all might be wondering how this couple can afford a $8.1 million Montecito estate and a second, even larger $14.5 million compound down the street. Well, if you don’t already know what Vivid Entertainment is, allow Yolanda to explain.
Vivid is arguably the most successful adult entertainment production juggernaut in the whole wide world. And adult entertainment, of course, is better-known as porn to all you uncouth hooligans. Or filthy smut, as your grandmother would say. Vivid’s productions feature all sorts of interesting “performers“.
Perhaps Vivid’s best-known “hallmark,” if you will, is its ownership of the most (in)famous celebrity sex tapes in history. Paris Hilton, Tila Tequila and Farrah Abraham all proved to be mega-successful Vivid video stars. And Kim Kardashian’s career-kickstarting video — appropriately titled “Kim Kardashian, Superstar,” reaped untold millions for Vivid and launched her krazy klan on their path to billionairedom. It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world! And we sure do love it.
Despite the raunchy products Mr. Asher peddles, he’s got admirably refined real estate taste — as you can tell from his swanky new Montecito pad. Yolanda would love to show y’all more of it, but unfortunately the property was yanked off the MLS just prior to closing. Still, you can find plenty of tantalizing photos here, here and here for your real estate porno enjoyment. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The irregularly-shaped flag lot is completely walled for security and features three gated access points, all of them camera-watched. The main entrance — located off the main boulevard out front features an epic long driveway that passes between tall hedges before dead-ending at a party-sized motorcourt.
Just around the corner, on a narrower side street, are two additional gates — one providing direct access to the detached garage (for the homeowners) and a discreet service entrance meant for household staff, groundskeepers and other hired help/peasant folks.
As for the home’s renovated interiors, they are done up in a casually luxe, very contemporary sort of manner. Original details are virtually nonexistent, for better or worse. Ebonized hardwood floors flow throughout the main rooms, and the kitchen has beautiful tile of a dark henna color.
Six bedrooms and eight bathrooms are spread between the main house and one-bed guesthouse, which combined total nearly 9,800-square-feet of living space. The deluxe master suite includes his-and-hers bathrooms and dressing rooms/closets.
The entire 3+ acre lot is fully and breathtakingly landscaped with emerald-green lawns, at least four reflecting fountains/pools, a proper north/south tennis court and mature specimen trees.
Back in early 2017, as already mentioned, the Ashers forked out $8.1 million for an “European Country” manor in Montecito with a guesthouse, seven-car garage and nearly 12,000-square-feet of living space.
This property is located a wee bit north of their new estate — closer to the Santa Ynez mountains — and was unfortunately mud-flooded last year. We assume the Ashers will soon be lookin’ to unload the 3.5-acre spread, but it is not yet listed on the (open) market.
Back down in Los Angeles — where Vivid is headquartered — the Ashers long resided in a charming Colonial-style house in the hoity-toity Hancock Park neighborhood.

Mr. Asher’s lovely (former) Hancock Park home
In October (2017), the Hancock Park residence was listed with a $5,750,000 asking price. Shortly thereafter — in December — the property was sold for $5.3 million to screenwriter Russell Gewirtz, best known for writing the screenplay for Spike Lee‘s Inside Man. The Ashers continue to maintain a more modest LA home in the Hollywood Hills.
And as for Mr. Barrack, he’s also been quite busy on the real estate front in recent years.

Mr. Barrack’s former Santa Monica manse (sold for $30+ million)
Back in 2014, Mr. Barrack paid $24,500,000 for a brand-new Santa Monica behemoth with an indoor basketball court and other fancy gizmos. In 2017, the contemporary Colonial mega-manse (built by “starchitect” Richard Landry) was sold to entrepreneur Kirk Lazarus for a record-bruising $31+ million.
Mr. Barrack now resides in a $13 million contemporary casa above Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon. And let’s not forget that he’s still attempting to unload Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch — now owned by his Colony Capital firm — for a newly-reduced $31 million.

Los Angeles Football Club Is In The MLS Playoffs -- And LA Sports Fans Could Use A Win

This is Los Angeles Football Club's inaugural season in Major League Soccer and they wound up taking third place in the Western conference. (Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images)
If watching all that World Series baseball at Dodger Stadium this past weekend has you wanting more Los Angeles playoff action (hopefully with a happier ending), you're in luck! Tonight, the Los Angeles Football Club, or LAFC, will be on the pitch for the franchise's first ever playoff game. This is their inaugural season in Major League Soccer and they wound up finishing in third place in the Western conference. LAFC will be hosting Real Salt Lake at Banc of California Stadium in Exposition Park tonight at 7:30.
For the uninitiated, here's a little MLS Cup playoffs 101. It's not a series of games like in the NBA or MLB. It's set up more like the NFL with a one-game elimination format.
If LAFC loses tonight, their season is over. If they win, they'll be on the road to play the Seattle Sounders FC this coming Sunday, with no guarantee of playing another home game. So, if you really want to go, tonight might be your last chance to see them in L.A. as they attempt to bring a coveted sports title to the city. You'll probably spot Will Ferrell at the game, since he's one of the team's owners.
If you can't make the game in person, you can watch it on ESPN 2 or UniMás KFTR 46. For any soccer fans stuck in their car at gametime, tune in to ESPN L.A. 710 AM or KFWB 980 AM.
You made it! Congrats, you read the entire story, you gorgeous human. This story was made possible by generous people like you. Independent, local journalism costs $$$$$. And now that LAist is part of KPCC, we rely on that support. So if you aren't already, be one of us! Help us help you live your best life in Southern California. Donate now.

Delightful English cottage in Eagle Rock asks $699K
Built in 1926, this charming English-style cottage on a cul-de-sac near Occidental College has, per the listing agent, been owned by the same family for the last seven decades.
The Eagle Rock residence sits on a 6,902-square-foot lot with a well-manicured front lawn. Its tall gable, arched front door, and red brick chimney give it a slightly whimsical, storybook appearance from the street.
Inside are two bedrooms and one bathroom spread across 1,258 square feet of living space, with wood floors, arched entryways, and diamond-grilled casement windows. The breezy living room has vaulted ceilings and a fireplace; it opens via sliding glass door to a small balcony overlooking the front yard.
Behind the home are terraced gardens, stone walls, and a grassy sitting area with views of the nearby mountains.
Equipped with fresh paint and a new HVAC system, the home is asking $699,000.

The living room opens to a balcony.

A breakfast nook sits adjacent to the kitchen.

Casement windows and wood floors can be found throughout the house.

Canter’s Deli Gives Away 50 Free Sandwiches a Day Starting Saturday
A Marvelous sandwich at Canter’s
To promote the new season of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime, Canter’s will give away 50 free sandwiches called “The Maisel” with pastrami, salami, coleslaw, and sauce on rye bread starting December 9 until the 16th. Other delis such as Carnegie Deli in New York City will also prepare the special promotional sandwich. Anyone who doesn’t end up getting one of those free sandwiches can still order the Maisel off the menu. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s second season premieres today.
101 restaurants to know about in Los Angeles
Yesterday the LA Times released its annual 101 restaurant list, now dubbed 101 Restaurant We Love (paywall). The listicle incorporates many of the late critic Jonathan Gold’s picks, but compiles a number of new selections such as Felix (which was snubbed last year) and Majordomo (which Jonathan Gold clearly did not like). In addition, the list compiles a number of restaurant clusters like the “Mozzaplex,” which aggregates all of Nancy Silverton’s places, but also assembles Josef Centeno’s Downtown LA restaurants as “Centenoplex.” Some head-scratching exclusions include Animal and Here’s Looking at You, while Orange County restaurants like Taco Maria and Marche Moderne continue to populate a mostly LA list, but otherwise it’s a pretty comprehensive roundup of excellent eateries in Los Angeles.
Rollin’ in the deep at Sushi|Bar
A number of celebrities dined together at the hidden and tiny Sushi|Bar in Encino on Sunday evening. Adele, Cameron Diaz, Mila Kunis, Nicole Ritchie, and Zoe Saldana all sat down at the omakase restaurant to eat the 17-course sushi menu. Imagine booking a seat next to that much star power.
Pinches in Downtown
The former Yorkshire Grill, which first opened in the 1940s, closed a few years ago, succumbing to a challenging Downtown restaurant scene. The space, which felt lifted right out of Mad Men, is becoming a new location for Pinches Tacos.
Another juice bar in the 90210
Toddrickallen has the scoop on the former Basanti tea bar on Small Santa Monica Boulevard, which will become a juice bar called Organica. Juices, superfoods, bowls, all the kind of stuff the yoga-going Beverly Hills denizens will eat until the end of time.
