sagau idea that i may or may not expand upon
depends on how my brain rots over time
let’s say you’re an avid genshin fan. you’ve been playing since the game’s release, or sometime close to that, and you’ve had a ton of fun just playing the game and pulling for characters. you’ve done the quests, cried and laughed with, maybe even found peace in, the characters. and, you’ve done enough research on the game’s lore and theories that if there was a university for it, (A/N: apparently there is, but it’s probably just a joke) you’d get your master’s degree with ease. maybe and as you look back on all you have done, you feel a sense of pride fill your heart.
but, alas, as the old saying goes: “the star that shines the brightest burns for half as long.” at some point, the game feels more like a chore than something you’re supposed to enjoy. an obligation, not an escape. and as you push keys and push the buttons on your screen, the big numbers suddenly lack meaning, lack weight. you tire of doing dailies or whatever else to collect primogems for the next new character that might be meta. the story, while still good, you don’t absorb like you used to anymore. you just can’t take the knowledge in. it’s not fun anymore.
and so, drawn in by the potential of new pursuits, maybe a new game to play, maybe a new hobby, maybe new friends, you uninstall genshin. it’s the best choice you can make for yourself. kind of like not wanting to eat the same food a thousand times in a row regardless of how good it is. the game’ll just take up storage space anyway on whatever device you’re using anyway.
(Creator, where are you? the world itself cries out because you have left it; left us. the people weep, cry out, scream for you to come back. please. Teyvat is crumbling, tearing at the seams.)
then, time passes by. you don’t think about genshin for a while. your socials were flooded with it for a period, but you quickly swipe down again once you recognize the content, and that, for the most part, does the job. the algorithm changes to your preferred form of content now- oh hey, a cute cat! better like that one.
(we are trying our best. but it is so very cold, so very lonely. i pray to feel even a little bit of your warmth every day, but it never comes. still, i can only hold onto the hope that you will grace our lowly selves with your presence. i don’t know what will happen if i lose hold of even that.)
and then a sudden reminder of your past forces itself into your life. someone you know, perhaps a sibling, a cousin, or possibly even someone you met online, gets into genshin. they know that you play it, for whatever reason- you don’t know if you’ve made some comment about it in the past, or maybe you do. they go ask you about it either way.
(they are going mad. i am going mad. we all are going mad. we are falling, falling, falling to our demise, and we cry out for you, that you may extend your loving care to us once again. we will cry out for joy and give unto you our whole beings if you would do only that. have you truly abandoned us, beloved Creator?)
as they start to talk about what they’ve done in game, all the memories start to come back to you. some good, some bad, some ugly, but all of them bring you nostalgia. they mention that you can play with them, too, since you know way more than they do. you aren’t all that excited at the idea of picking up genshin again, though, so you refuse.
(istaroth gently cradles the time when you were with us still in her hands, holding it as if it were most fragile thing in the world. i don’t blame her for it. rhinedottir and naberius, the both of them, have gone silent. for the pair, there is no more beauty in experimenting or nurturing life if you are not there to witness. asmoday, i am not sure where she is, but i am sure she is mourning like the rest of us. i do nothing but pray now. hear this lowly servant’s pleadings. i beg of you, Creator.)
somehow, they manage to convince you that, yes, you should play genshin with them. you go to the app store, type in “genshin” in the search bar, and find the app. you press or click download.
(i am not sure what the mortals are doing. i think they have it worse. please come back.)
you wait patiently as the game loads, and when it’s done, you click on the app.
(…Creator? …is that you?)
you wait for the game to fully load once you pop in, and- oh. you’ve lost all your progress. shoot. well, if you remember correctly as long as you skip over everything else, the main story shouldn’t take that long. maybe an hour or two. or maybe three, you don’t remember that well.
you can’t shake off the feeling that something’s… different, though.
(thank you.)
eh, it’s whatever. you’ll figure things out as you play.

closing notes; no beta we die like uhhhhh guizhong yeah totally
