N. Katherine Hayles' Prologue to How We Became Post-human
1) How is the question of "What can think?" an essentially post human thought?
1. With the creation of artificial intelligence and its ability to perceive the world similarity to what humans can perceive, the question of “what can think?” is not far from the idea of post human thought. For instance, Alan Turing created a test to determine whether or not responses are that of a human or a machine. This test simply proved that machines could think to the same capacity of the human brain. I believe that this is only the case because there is a certain calculated pattern of perception that we unconsciously have to understand our surroundings. Machines can mimic this giving us the impression that they have the ability to “think” about their responses. Other factors, such as gender, were also included in the Turing test to further distinguish the type of responses that were given to determine if a human or a machine was the sender.
2) According to Hayles, any use of networked communication, such as the Web, to represent you constitutes a post-human activity. But, does this in turn mean that post humanism began with the Internet? What do you think can be considered the earliest post human behavior, and why?
2. N. Katherine Hayles’ prologue mentions how network communication is a representation of the post-human world. I believe that this is true, however, what also holds true is the fact that post-human activity is not a new idea and has not started with the invention of the Internet. The Internet is simply an extension from previous inventions and ideas that were used years before the term ‘post-human’ existed. I would consider the telegraph or telephone to be one of the obvious first post-human traits dating back to the 1800s. The concept of communicating with someone in a different location from you through a type of network was the next step in advancing in the world of technology during that period of time. The invention of the Internet made it so that people can interact worldwide and through different websites.
