My yearly cucumber. Seriously, no matter what I do I can only get one to grow each year. This is a Marketmore variety so why didn’t it do better? I saw bees and everything.

Got the chance to buy from a seed company this year. I think I got a pretty good collection of seeds. Three different type of beans, peas, garlic chives, cucumbers, eggplant, basil and a mesclun mix.

Recycled used containers being dried after the disinfecting process. Didn’t end up using them cause I am really lazy and missed my chance to start seeds before the last frost date. I’ve direct sown in some containers and so we will see what happens.

Participated in the seed swap again this year. Lots of lovely things received this year and a very pretty packaging job.

I totally forgot all these good lessons from gardening and have been discouraged the last couple of years. Especially after breaking my ankle. Glad I went looking for a reference from this tumblr and stumbled on my 2012 wrap up. It’s given me a positive boost for this years garden.
2012 Garden Wrap Up
Things I learned while gardening this year:
(In no particular order)
Start all plants (from seed) early. No, seriously earlier then this year. For instance, I know my frost dates end about mid-late April. Therefore, I should start growing my seeds sometime in February or March.
Pest protection - know it, do it. (stupid hornworms)
For my sanity and ease of life PICK PLANTS FOR THE SEASON! Really, lettuce during hot Georgia summers are only going to require me to triple my amount of work. no thank you.
Year round gardening is hard. Really. I’m a beginner gardener and no matter what the books told me I couldn’t get it right. It may have even been nice to know that fall crops are started in summer, winter crops are started in fall and some spring crops are started in winter…. but not all of them.
Transplants can be a gardeners best friend. Buying a started plant from the local store is not always a bad thing. Which is a good thing.
Successful plants grown from seed included husk cherry, tomato, lemon cuke, potato. Unsuccessful plants grown from seed: everything else.
Don’t grow husk cherries in a 4x4 garden. When the description says it sprawls, it sprawls. Also, the roots spread wide so it affects all the plants around it. (i.e. in the 4x4 area)
During the summer water is your best friend. WATER, WATER, WATER! (To the extent that you need/are allowed due to local rules.)
Purchased plants that were successful include basil and mint. The unsuccessful ones included the thyme, lavender and rosemary.
Sand sucks. Amend the soil, use raised beds or do what you can to not have sand.
All in all this was a big learning curve for me. The year before I didn’t have a yard so I did some container gardening. Last year was the first time I was working directly in the ground and it was definitely work. I know I still have a long road ahead of me this year as well but I am looking forward to it. I’m going to take everything that I learned under my belt and keep looking towards my gardening future.
Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013!

Sweet potatoes harvested 2015. These were container grown and all the google searches I’ve seen have had similar results. Not large potatoes but slender and slim.

1/2 of my potato harvest from the ones that I bought from Walmart. I haven’t dug up the remaining potatoes yet. Plus I have Purple Viking potatoes that I bought from High Mowing this year that are still growing.

What a difference a month makes. These sweet potatoes were planted about a month ago and have really filled out. I hope we get some nice sweet potatoes from this setup.

Trying sweet potatoes again this year. Plan to do a lot more gardening than I could last year when my ankle was broken.
