Important Terms and World Stuff
Ripped straight from my documents so it's just going to be messy.
Affinity: Affinity is the term often used to describe one’s abilities to sense spirits, ranging from little to no affinity to high affinity. Below are the listed:
Little to No Affinity/Unseeing is often associated with people who do not have the spirit gene. These are generally those who do not have their third eye open. This consists of between 20% to 30% of the population though it is inconsistent through reports
Low Affinity are the second most common of those with the spirit gene, with people who are able to sense a greater range of spirits than those without the gene. They often can sense spirits through at least one or two senses of any kind, though with vision, the spirit is noted to be blurry once it reaches mid-range. They are also capable of using spiritual energy but do not have an innate ability.
Mild Affinity is the most common range for people who have the spirit gene. They have the possibility of having an innate ability however it’s often a gamble and is rather mild. They have a better range of techniques to use than the lower affinity user and have a greater sense for the types of spirits around them.
High Affinity is the rarest of the affinities to those with the spirit gene. They are very likely to be born with an innate ability, which is most often between an emitter and a transformation type. These people are able to sense spirits in every sense of the word
Innate Ability: An ability some with the spirit gene are born with. Typically, these are associated with those between mild to high affinity with the higher the affinity of the gene, the stronger the ability. These people typically go pro with exorcisms and become heroes.
Blessings: Gifts from the gods in the form of abilities or talents, similar to a sponsorship. This is often given to a person the kami believes will act out in their will or favor with no bias on good or evil. The term for the Kami in this contract is a Patron, for the receiving person, they are the Beneficiary. The ghost version of this would be a Curse
Meridians: Where spiritual energy runs in a person’s body. It is noted that everyone has these meridians, though the concentration varies from affinities. It is noted that even the unseeing have meridians though it is either weak or misdirected.
Golden Core Technique/ Concentrated Mana Technique: A technique perfected in China that was based off of Taoism, it is a technique that is meant to channel a person’s spiritual energy to their dantian, which is in their stomach area. It is a widely used technique as it gives the benefit of a much better control of one’s personal spiritual energy, which can then be used to help maintain youth, leading to a wide spread of exorcists or celebrities and the ‘eternal youth’ dilemma often talked about in the media.

Exorcists or 'Heroes'
At this point, they go hand in hand.
In the beginning, people just called them either exorcists or shamans, which was due to their religious and traditional background. However, a few years into that, people on social media during a major incident started calling exorcists their heroes. After that, the title almost became interchangable, though most people give a subtle distinction between the two.
An exorcist is a person who can legally slay spirits under the delegation of a shrine while a hero works more as an exorcist either independently or under the government's Public Safety Commision. However, both still mean the same thing as there are heroes who work under shrines that are still well known or are popular throughout the region. At this point, it's all just a popularity contest based on namesake for many countries.
In the case for Japan, a majority of their heroes are known for how private their lives are. Many of them keep their identity hidden save for the government and official documents, but even then, they have people working around the clock to keep identies blurred throughout the media and the internet. This is speculated to be due to the possibility of targeted attacks by spirits or any mal-intentioned person, but because of the tradition of privacy, most heroes don't know the identity of their coworker unless absolutely necessary.
There are many heroes that exist throughout Japan. The Top 8 are known as the 8 Lucky Gods, the Top 10 are called the Top 10 (very basic I know), and so on and so forth. This is often determined through amount of cases solved, reports, and public sentiment.
Here are the current rankings from the start of the story:
Izanagi
Iwainushi
Inari
Sun Spot
Torii
KuShiRo (Hei'er and Bai'er)
Susanoo-no-Mikoto
ShinKami
Here are other heroes as well:

Dehisa Yasushi
“So dying is no longer a part of your sugar daddy requirements? It was the one thing on that list I could fulfill!”
Birthday: August 19 | Age: 14 | Gender: Male | Race: Human
Hair Color: Brown | Eye Color: Brown
Affinity - 70% (Low Affinity)
A true friend that helps you when you need it. Whether it be helping you shoulder the blame or getting rid of the body, he's there for the ride as long as he gets a cool story from it.
Despite being of the 70%, he is a person who could only sense mid to high range spirits through touch and smell and he's not really keen on touching spirits so he'd rather just stick by his friends and let them guide him to what is hopefully not his doom. For low-range spirits, it feels like he's passing by a breeze, so he has a mild paranoia of the season of autumn, which everyone clowns on him for. They do understand where he's coming from though.
This is also the friend who Mikumo plagerized his 'low affinity' from, somewhat, mostly. But as long as Mikumo doesn't somehow implicate him, he thinks Mikumo will be alright.
If he's not with the Dahn, he's making sure his sister doesn't start three house fires as he is the only one in his household who is willing to attach this young (9yo) feral child on a leash. He has a theory that maybe he babied her too much when she was a younger kid and now karma was trying to tell him that he should've bullied her instead when he found out he was becoming an older brother.

Oshio Toshiaki
“How funny do you think it would be if I somehow made you guys more fit than Mikumo by the Yuuei entrance exam?”
Birthday: Feburary 17 | Age: 14 | Gender: Male | Race: Human
Hair Color: Black | Eye Color: Black
Affinity - 70% (High Affinity)
The son of a famous model and fashion designer duo, Oshio Toshiaki is known to be a stellar student on paper, though his model face and fashionable flare has helped the dahn get into and out of many situations, he is known for his good control over the things he gets them into.
Being born of the upper 70% along with having an innate ability, he was destined for heroism and the life of an exorcist since the day he unlocked his ability. None of it has to do with the fact he really does not want to enter the fashion industry if he didn't have his shit together by 23. No siree.
If he is known to be a stellar student, then Izanagi is the world's greatest villain, or so the dahn say. But like Hana had said before, "As long as it is not recorded, it might as well never happen." And at this point, too many of them know each other's secrets that could land them in legal trouble, so they're all smart enough not to snitch. Whether it be from roughhousing, jumping the kid that everyone was getting very annoyed at in class, or breaking into the abandoned warehouse and quite possibly messing up its foundation because you thought it woud be fun to practice your ability there-
Other than Nishio's phone, as long as the statute of limitations passes, he's all in the green. Now all he has to do for the next three years is make sure Mikumo didn't somehow kill himself trying to attack something he can't see.
It'll probably be finee.

Akatani Mikumo
“I swear I already gave all the talismans I had to the police please don’t arrest me.”
Birthday: November 23 | Age: 14 | Gender: Male | Race: Human
Hair Color: Black | Eye Color: Black
Affinity - 30% (Unseeing)
The main protagonist for this story, he is a person who is curious about all things spirits and if it wasn't for the fact he couldn't see or sense literally anything from beyond the veil, he would've been a great contender for attending an exorcist academy. Despite all of that, he still chose to try and become an exorcist. If he couldn't get in, then like he had told the Dahn, he will just become an illegal arms dealer with his skill in creating talismans.
Because of the fact in this world, he is basically a walking target for any spirit with malicious intent, he has a xolo dog that works as his spirit guide. His name is Tomodachi, a testament to Mikumo's terrible naming sense.
Despite the fact that his journey to becoming a hero is built on a giant lie, Mikumo would think he's doing great all things considered. Yeah, maybe he lied to Izanagi (the hero) about how shit his affinity is, but now he can use Izanagi (the kami)'s blessing to make up for the huge liability. And the fact that Izanagi had told nothing about it to the number one hero really actually proves that everything Mikumo's currently doing is a-okay in the book of the gods.
He will be a great pro hero, he swears. Besides, as long as it's not recorded, then that means it never happened. So really, he never did the things he did and his record is squeaky clean!

The Dahn
Dan literally translates to Gang in Japanese, however, because my google docs keep confusing it as Dan the name, now there is a fancy H to promote the short vowel used. Apparently Dahn the name also means Ruler of the World, so nice tidbit to also promote the childlike nature of this team.
This is the group that is going to be the main focus of the story. So these are going to be the links to longer posts, but for now it's their name and a fact about their name or inspiration
Characters:
Akatani Mikumo - Name is literally the deku prototype name I'm not ashamed I stole it and it's mine now.
Oshio Toshiaki - The bakugo equivilant but nothing like Bakugo.
Dehisa Yasushi - The kanji for his name is stolen from Yasushi Akutagawa
Tsubasa Yori - Yori meaning rely, which I find funny based on what I'm about to do to his character.
Agei Ashikari - I'm pretty sure this is the name of the undercut kid and I'm also 78% sure that I accidentally switched the first and last name placement but at this point I've gotten used to it like this.
Akibo Kotone - first name related to ability, which was coincidental
Nishio Mei - First name as in bud and life.
Makoto Hana - Parents wanted a girl and gave him the girl name
One thing I do need to confess before I go into talking about these characters in any post is the fact that I lifted a majority of the names (besides Yori, Toshiaki, and Mikumo) from a fanfic series on ao3 that I honestly don't remember other than the fact I loved it and the vibes it brought to the table. They were placeholder names originally, but I got so used to the names that I can't replace it or else it feels werid to me. This is my sin. If the author ever finds this blog, I'm so sorry and I loved your fic but forgot to bookmark it.

MHA, Destiny, Naruto
I need to make this post first before anything else because of how prevelant MHA is in the story and in plot points. As in, the story follows in line with MHA in a way that it is so obvious, the only way you woudn't be able to go "Isn't this just the plot to mha but with spirits and death?" is if you've never seen MHA.
So let's get everything out of the way: I wrote the "World of Spirits (title pending)" project because of my viceral reaction to the ending of My Hero Academia.
"Maybe this was our hero academia" *implodes cutely*
The plot falls in line with MHA but I would hope the vibes are very different.
So this was all made from disatisfaction and spite, like most of my creations, and I kind of wanted to talk more about why exactly I feel so weird about the whole trip of mha and how WoS will be different, and I think it's similar to how Naruto ends with a... message.
Nothing really gets accomplished and it all feels like some strange prophecy.
An example would be both Naruto and Deku- both started at the bottom of the ladder and the whole story was about their journey to the top. They both had a companion that served as their rival who stood above them (Sasuke and Bakugo respectively), both had a mentor of sorts, an incident where their rival/friend goes missing, and both end up being the key factor to saving their respective homes.
They're supposed to be the relatable character, but I noticed in all of the major shounen titles there is one major thing that just ends up shifting the original message or theme of the story.
Somehow being the child of some sort of destiny.
Naruto ends up being the child of a prophecy and all of a sudden everything he did in the series is all a part of some 'plan' to the gods. If all the red herrings in mha were correct and Deku's dad was AFO, then it feels like fate that Deku had to be the one to slay his father. Even in other titles like Demon Slayer, Bleach, and JJK, their protagonists were all somehow part of a centuries long plan that each of their actions fall into that makes everything that happens after that just... strange.
At the end of it all, nothing happens. A decade later in the story and the status quo the readers felt like the protagonists were going to change remained the same. Naruto ends up as Hokage and in Boruto seems like a... dad? a figure? he does things but it feels underwhelming to the experience of watching him grow up. Deku's world remains the exact same. Heroes and villains continue to exist, Deku may not have powers but he has the money to become iron man. What is that supposed to tell to the readers? If you can't be something great through normal means get a sugar daddy to pay to win?
I'm saying this as if my story is going to have a grand "And then they changed the world," but I understand where these stories go because in the end of the day, my characters are literal teens. They can't do anything really. The story at the end of the day is these people coming to terms with their reality, seeing the possibilites of the world that they live in and choosing to still find beauty in it. Or smth like that. I hope it stays like that somehow, or I might make a story when they're adults or next gen if I actually finish this and not abandon it.
so... yeah

World of Spirits
Synopsis: In a world with spirits and supernaturals, those with a specific gene are able to see these spirits and entities, with 70% of the world having this gene, known as the spirit gene. To take care of malicious spirits, Exorcists, sometimes called Heroes to others, have become a popular job option that has been coming into the limelight with the spirit gene giving people supernatural abilities. This is the story of a group of kids as they navigate the road between both worlds.
This was a story that is the culmination of many stories that I have read for a long time and the frustration I had towards some of their plots and their endings. I still hold those stories in admiration because it's incredible how long people are able to keep going in their stories despite everything.
This will serve as the masterpost to both the story, character outlines, and plot points as I make this thing become less of a daydream.
