‘Walk This Way’ - Girls Aloud vs. Sugababes
youtube
Number one week ending 24th March 2007 for 1 week
The Comic Relief single has to have some kind of novelty - it’s in the name. Nothing serious here. And it’s definitely not a good idea to take this awful cover of a Run DMC classic seriously. Styled as a ‘battle’ between the country’s two big girl groups, none of their voices are suited to this shouty cover track, with none of them having any real attitude compared to the original. Instead it just sounds like a karaoke version. Separately they’re great - together not so much. I remember it came up as a suggested track on my Spotify recently and I recoiled, being reminded it for the first time in years! At least it raised loads of money for charity?

cherylofficial: “Sitting here drinking coffee with these two ☕️ and watching babies 15 years later !!! Crazy how time flies… 😱 15 years ago today some of the best, craziest years of my life were just beginning. I had no idea what a life journey I was starting out on. We had some of the most amazing times of our lives and made some incredible pop moments 💃🏻 to put the cherry 🍒 on top.. In the end I left with these two amazing, inspiring gorgeous souls and the best friends anyone could ever ask for. You blessed me 🙏🏻 and I will never be able to thank you enough for the support, love and loyalty you brought to our group. I am so proud of what we achieved together. Love you all @lilcola @kimberleywalshofficial @nadinecoyle @sarahnicoleharding Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤️ #Girlsaloud15″
lilcola: “Girls day with these two today. It is crazy to think that 15 years ago today we were getting ready for our last live show on TV before the public decided who they wanted to make up GIRLS ALOUD. All of our lives completely changed forever. No going back. I’m confident in saying that those early years of the band will always truly be the wildest ride of my life both personally and as a group and no one other than the 5 of us knows how it felt. Happy 15 years Girls Aloud, @cherylofficial , @kimberleywalshofficial , @nadinecoyle , @sarahnicoleharding , our team & the Alouders. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️”
kimberleywalshofficial: “Happy 15th Birthday girls @cherylofficial @lilcola @nadinecoyle @sarahnicoleharding so proud of us and all we achieved! #HappyBirthdayGA #GirlsAloud15 #GirlsAloud”

‘The Promise’ - Girls Aloud
youtube
Number one week ending 1st November 2008 for 1 week
Although their debut single hit number one, it took Girls Aloud 6 years to get another one. In that time they’d been quietly building up a reputation for creating amazing pop songs, with every single hitting the top 10. ‘The Promise’ was something of a change in style for them, having usually leaned more towards the electro-pop end of the spectrum. Echoing the girl bands of the 60s in both sound and image in the gorgeous video, the track is a luscious-sounding classic love song about an irresistible lover, built up of layers of heavenly vocals, twinkly synths and a brass section. Sure, it’s a bit too sickly sweet at times, sounding like the theme tune to a 1980s quiz show in the chorus, but it’s nice how each girl gets a moment to shine vocally, and the attitude present in all their other music is still intact here.
