In South Africa, Colonialism Was Written on Stone
Tumblr media
At the base of a steep outcrop near the small South African town of Porterville, outside Cape Town, is a painting of a wooden ship. Its masts and rigging are clearly visible, traced on a lined and rutted rock surface. Three flags blow to the left; a fourth blows to the right. This suggests that the artist did not fully understand sailing technology, an incongruity that can be readily explained. Archaeologists believe that the ship represents an extremely rare record of encroaching colonial activity, painted by someone whose ancestral land was being wrested away. Today, the painting footnotes an era of conquest that had devastating consequences for local people.
Whoever painted the ship trekked far inland before leaving his or her mark: the nearest coastal bays lie 100 kilometers to the west. The painting, dubbed the Porterville Galleon, is found in one of the richest rock art areas in southern Africa. The parched and rugged mountain range 200 kilometers north of Cape Town known as the Cederberg has several thousand ocher paintings on boulders and sandstone ledges. Read more.

“We Wear Culture” is a collaboration between Google and more than 180 museums, schools, fashion institutions, and other organizations from all parts of the globe. It’s part of Google’s Arts & Culture platform, which is digitizing the world’s cultural treasures, and functions as a searchable guide to a collective archive of some 30,000 fashion pieces that puts “three millennia of fashion at your fingertips,” Google says.
But it isn’t just a database. Google has worked with curators to create more than 450 exhibits on different topics—say, how the cheongsam changed the way Chinese women dress—making the site an endlessly entertaining, educational portal filled with stunning imagery touching on everything from modern Japanese streetwear to the clothes worn at the court of Versailles.
i can already tell this has made writing for historical fandoms – the worst part of which, for me, is absofuckinglutely hands-down the clothing – much easier.

i need help
basically, my family has been in crisis for awhile, starting from when our apartment caught on fire in november and i lost everything i owned. i’m mentally ill and currently unemployed because my job ended unexpectedly, so are both my parents. on top of that, i found out i unexpectedly got pregnant. i should have the procedure next week, but i really need help paying for my medical expenses right now. the procedure alone is $470.
(and that doesnt cover needing pads, pain meds, or anything else that might come with that.)
i’ve been sick for weeks on top of this, some sort of infection and i have a horrible UTI, i can’t even afford to buy cranberry juice or anything. i’ve been throwing up several times a day for over a week now. i barely have any energy.
my paypal is [email protected], and i also have chase. please contact me if you can help in anyway. i’m getting very desperate. i already owe money for my last check up and can barely afford the meds i need for other infections i have right now.
(more under the cut)

i need an abortion
welp, ive been trying to avoid this for almost 4 months now but looks like it’s come down to this! im 17 weeks pregnant and my scheduled appointment for my abortion is Friday, May 5th at 8 am. costs for my abortion is $1,270, however, the National Abortion Federation is covering $505. which leaves me at a balance of $765 that i do not have. now. thankfully, after moving into my new residency, im working now and will be receiving my next paycheck next Wednesday. however, i will only be capable of covering approx. $200 of the $765 because i have rent to pay as well. time is of the essence. i didnt want anyone to know about this, i dont want anyone to know about this. ive been handling this physically and emotionally all on my own since February. help me. in Georgia, i have about 3 weeks left before i am no longer eligible to get an abortion here. if you have questions, message me. if you send a large amount of money (meaning $80 and above), now that i have a job, i can reimburse you. i need to have all of $765 by May 4th at 5:00 pm. in the meantime i will be working, trying to sell shit… do whatever. i cant afford to weigh this out any longer. most of you know who i am, know my story. please signal boost, circulate this as far as you can. if you would like to make a Facebook post about me, feel free but i ask that you keep my personal information lowkey until they personally reach out to me. i will be making a Facebook post tonight and if you want to friend me in order to share the post i make on FB, message me. my paypal is [email protected]. remember: $765 by May 4th at 5:00 pm. thank you.                                                                            – Nea-Sa’Mon (aka Cosmo)

The Björketorp Runestone & Curse
The Björketorp Runestone is one of many standing stones (menhir) located in Bleking, Sweden and is one of the world’s tallest runestones, measuring 13.7 feet (4.2 m) high. It is part of a stone circle with two other blank standing stones, with several other solitary stones in the surrounding regions. Most scholars date the runestone’s inscription to the 7th century AD. It’s carved with a type of runes that form an intermediate version between the Elder Futhark and the Younger Futhark. The runestone is inscribed on both sides, the shorter message appears to say “I foresee perdition” or “prediction of perdition” and the longer side’s inscription (pictured) translates as:
“I, master of the runes(?) conceal here runes of power. Incessantly (plagued by) maleficence, (doomed to) insidious death (is) he who breaks this (monument). I prophesy destruction / prophecy of destruction.”
Local lore says that the curse came true at one point. Long ago, a man wanted to move the runestone so that he could have more room to farm, so he piled wood around it to attempt to heat the stone and then crack it with water. The weather was calm with no wind at the time, but as soon as he lit the fire a sudden gust came and lit the man’s hair aflame. He dropped to the ground to put it out but his clothes caught fire and the poor man died in agony. The flame around the runestone, however, was miraculously extinguished, as if someone had smothered the fire.
